5 Elegant Items I’m Prioritizing Over 5 Too-Trends Ones

New year, new wardrobe, right? As 2024 approached, I took the opportunity to evaluate my (admittedly overflowing) closet and make some decisive cuts. I realized I hadn’t done a deeper audit of things in quite a long time, so not only was my closet in need of a healthy purge to make everything finally fit on the hanger again, but my style has notably pivoted over the past year towards a more elegant and classic look and many of my older clothing items just no longer feel like anything I want to wear.

I’m guilty of trying a lot of different trends and during the height of the Y2K redux, I tried dozens of things that feel overly-trendy when I look at them now. It turns out that I was holding onto plenty of items like baggy cargo pants and colorful plastic jewelry that I thought I’d get wear out of but never really did. At the end of the day, I’ve always preferred more timeless styles to trendier ones, so I’m taking it as a lesson to be pickier when trying new styles. Below, I’m discussing below several of the swaps I’ve made to move my wardrobe and personal style in a more elegant and less trend-driven direction that will (hopefully) withstand the test of time.

13 Best Chanel Makeup Products According to a Makeup Artist

Well, it’s safe to say that it’s probably a combination of eye shadows, eyeliners, eye brow pencils, mascaras, foundations, blushes, lipsticks, and bronzers. The 12 Best Snow Boots for Winter, Per This Arctic Resident

As an editor who isn’t adjusted to winter dressing by any means, I have to admit that I panic at the sight of snowfall. Admittedly, I still haven’t bought any true winter boots given the lack of any severe winters in New York City. Most of the time, my chic (but dangerous) studded ballet flats will be fine, but given the amount of snow New Yorkers are expecting in the coming weeks and days, my on-trend footwear isn’t going to cut it.

Instead of combing TikTok for hours for video footage on how to buy the best snow boots, I went straight to the source. Yep, Arctic Circle influencers. After a deep dive through my hyper-niche algorithm, I reached out to Thea Selven, or @svalbardthea on TikTok. As her username suggests, Selven lives on Svalbard. Svalbard is a small, rugged island situated between Norway and the North Pole, making it one of the northernmost inhabited places in the world. Naturally, I knew her advice on getting the best snow boots was invaluable.

“In winter, we can have degrees below -30° Celsius! So it’s all about keeping warm and functional, not so much about what’s trendy and not,” Selven explained. It’s a lesson I can learn as a fickle fashion editor—sometimes, function outweighs fashion!

Below, read Selven’s hidden secrets for buying the best snow boots, and scroll on to discover a few chic pairs worth adding to your cart before more snow falls.

The New J.Crew Items a 63-Year-Old and 34-Year-Old Love

My mother and I are spending the first part of the New Year sorting our closets in an effort to get rid of what’s not working for us anymore. The goal is to edit and not to replace everything we’re ditching, but it’s also a time we’re both looking at our wardrobes to identify any holes where a fresh piece or two could be worth it. And while age has nothing to do with what you should or shouldn’t wear, it’s fun to note that my mom and I tend to gravitate toward similar pieces and trends—despite our 29-year age difference. (I’m 34, and she’s 63.) Furthermore, one store we both love for uncovering wardrobe staples just so happens to be J.Crew.

On that note, we actually went into a J.Crew store to peruse styles in IRL and also scrolled through the site to identify the items we both like. To give you shopping inspiration, I decided to highlight the five womenswear items I especially liked from my mom’s list, including the sweater J.Crew designer Olympia Gayot is wearing above. Keep scrolling to check out the items in question (the first grouping below). I also rounded up a range of other chic J.Crew pieces that could pique your interest.

My Aunt and I Went Shopping at J.Crew—42 Pieces We Both Love

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: My aunt is one of my biggest style inspirations. In my 29 years as her niece, I’ve never seen her looking anything short of pulled-together and ultra-chic, so it should come as no surprise when I tell you that it’s basically her job to help people find their personal style. She went into fashion merchandising and has since worked in everything from personal styling to buying. Almost everyone in our family goes to her for style advice, myself included. And now that we both work in fashion, I’m constantly texting her about everything from the coolest new trends to the items I’m considering buying.

I sat down with her to chat about the best J.Crew shopping. The retailer has recently shot up to the top of my list of go-to stores, and I’ve found more and more reasons to shop its chic and elevated staples, but I wanted to get my aunt’s take on what to buy there now. Despite the nearly 30 years between us, we picked out many of the same J.Crew items, which proves how versatile and ageless these finds really are.

Instead of keeping them to myself, I’m dishing on all the chic J.Crew shopping finds my aunt and I are losing our minds over now. Ahead are 42 perfect picks.

22 Chic Items to Shop From Revolve’s Epic Winter Sale

online shop a lot—like, a lot, a lot—but one person’s only capable of scrolling so much, which is why I sometimes go on long hiatuses from certain retailers. It’s not because I don’t want to keep up with their every drop. I simply can’t, at least not while maintaining any sort of work-life balance. And the one that’s unfortunately fallen off my radar of late is Revolve, though, I can’t see it staying that way for long now that I’ve feasted on its current sale selection. My findings were too good for me not to come back for more.

What to Wear to a Vegas Vow Renewal

I kept going back and forth about what to wear. I’d already worn a perfect-to-me white dress at my dream wedding, and I felt that Vegas required something a little more fun, a little unexpected, and yes, a little more colorful. Plus, it needed to look nice next to my husband’s outfit, which he picked out way before I did. (He has the most intentional style, but that’s a story for another time.) I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to find this Anine Bing pink silk suit in my size, and I’m happy that my investigative skills paid off because it was everything I wanted. I’m a sucker for an oversize fit, and I felt chic and comfortable in it. I wore the diamond earrings I was gifted on my wedding day and styled a pair of pink Gucci sunglasses (because, Vegas), Amina Muaddi heels, and a sparkly purse I bought on Amazon a few days before—proof that a high-low mix never fails.

As far as beauty goes, I got a spray tan at Sugared + Bronzed before we left for Vegas and a blowout at DryBar, and I did my makeup in our hotel room. Instead of using my tinted moisturizer, I opted for foundation, and I actually wore eye makeup. I used my favorite Nudestix eye stick, my go-to Chanel eyeliner, and brown mascara—all products that would last hours.

How to Style a Puffer Jacket, According to a Celeb Stylist

Puffer jackets and chic styling don’t often go together at first glance. How to style a puffer jacket isn’t top of mind for most people. Instead, winter dressing is usually about making sure that you’re mentally and emotionally ready to step out of the door without regretting not putting on that extra layer of clothing.

As a new-ish New Yorker who has never experienced a true winter in her entire life, I have to admit that I’m in the latter camp. So when it came to finding a winter jacket that both looked and felt good, I knew I had my work cut out for me—until I asked Karla Welch, that is.

Welch, who has years of experience styling top A-List clientele like Hailey Bieber, Tracee Ellis Ross, America Ferrera, Karlie Kloss, and Lorde, among others, partnered with Canada Goose this fall and winter to make puffer jacket outfits feel more like a creative choice rather than a chore.

“We really wanted to show how a warm functional coat can add to a look and become part of the entire fit vs. just something you wear to stay warm and dry,” Welch, who partnered with the legacy outwear brand in styling its fall/winter 2023 drop, explained. “This new collection is super flattering on the wearer and the color offerings are in arrays of muted tones with pastels here and there, that can easily work themselves into any wardrobe and on any type of person.”

She’s not wrong—a quick glance at the in-season offerings drastically shows that this isn’t your father’s bulky all-black winter puffer of the past. Earth tones and soft, muted mattes instantly elevate the collection, with a minimalist take on quilting, logos, and hardware from the Canada Goose design team.
