The 29 Best Shearling Coats for Women in 2024

As a self-proclaimed coat girl, I’m constantly keeping an eye on coat trends, and there’s one coat style, in particular, that is definitely having its moment. If you’re a Kate Hudson fan or a ’90s kid, then you probably also deem this the “Penny Lane” coat from the 2000 film Almost Famous. This coat is characterized mainly by the long shearling trim that has become a trend all its own.

Although the original coat is a longline bohemian-style coat, there are many iterations today that involve the same shearling or fur trim and updated elements. Designers have taken to the trend, including Marni, Proenza Schouler, and Marine Serre, and there are contemporary versions, jacket options, and endless colorways for this classic coat.

If you haven’t already, expect to start seeing this coat trend pop up all over your feed. Below, I’ve pulled together the coats available to shop now that Penny Lane would definitely approve of.

Under-$200 Nordstrom Items I Told My 60-Year-Old Mom to Buy

If you ask me whether or not to buy someone a gift card as a present, I’ll tell you that it’s impersonal and a bit of a yawn 90% of the time. The only time I praise them is when the recipient is anything like my mother, who rarely buys anything indulgent for herself and therefore needs the incentive to go out and splurge on something that’s just for her.

That is why I was thrilled to find out that she’d been gifted with a $200 gift card to Nordstrom aka our department store. (Everyone has one that holds an extra-special place in their hearts.) I’m aware that she knows her way around Nordstrom just as well as I do from years of experience, but given how little time she spends shopping anymore, I took it upon myself to scour the entire contents of the store (no really, I did) to help her get busy spending it. Below, find 34 under-$200 items that I’d pick if I were my gift-card holding 60-year-old mom.

17 of the Best White Platform Sneakers to Shop Right Now

When it comes to fashion, I’m always down for an “ugly” trend. There’s just something about an obnoxiously weird design that makes me go, “I need that.” We’ve seen plenty of controversial sneaker trends over the past few years, from dad-inspired styles to chunky soles galore, some even becoming necessities in our forever wardrobes. (I wear my grandpa-esque shoes almost daily.) As trends always come back in rotation, 2000s platforms have reappeared on the fashion scene, taking on sandals and everyday sneakers. At 5’3″, I’m not mad, as I could use the additional height.

Even as someone who embraces “weird” pieces, I know all too well a platform heel can be a little tricky to style. So if you’re looking to incorporate the Y2K trend but don’t want to look too over the top, white platform sneakers are for you. They look clean and crisp without being too much. I’ve rounded up 17 of the best below, from Nike to Converse, along with some outfit imagery for styling inspiration.

Upper East Side Grandmothers Are the Vision—25 Items to Buy

“Old money,” “steal wealth,” and “quiet luxury” are all buzzwords floating around right now. People are looking for a way to tap into these aesthetics, but many of them are looking right past the women who have already been doing it for decades: Upper East Side grandmothers. On a few recent scrolls through TikTok, I’ve noticed that this aesthetic is getting a lot of love, with fashion people piling on intentionally gaudy jewelry, oversize faux-fur coats, tweed jackets, and anything J.Crew.

Actresses such as Issa Rae, Karyn Parsons, and Tracee Ellis Ross have not only entertained their audiences in their roles, but they’ve also inspired many with their characters’ striking ensembles.

5 Elegant Items I’m Prioritizing Over 5 Too-Trends Ones

New year, new wardrobe, right? As 2024 approached, I took the opportunity to evaluate my (admittedly overflowing) closet and make some decisive cuts. I realized I hadn’t done a deeper audit of things in quite a long time, so not only was my closet in need of a healthy purge to make everything finally fit on the hanger again, but my style has notably pivoted over the past year towards a more elegant and classic look and many of my older clothing items just no longer feel like anything I want to wear.

I’m guilty of trying a lot of different trends and during the height of the Y2K redux, I tried dozens of things that feel overly-trendy when I look at them now. It turns out that I was holding onto plenty of items like baggy cargo pants and colorful plastic jewelry that I thought I’d get wear out of but never really did. At the end of the day, I’ve always preferred more timeless styles to trendier ones, so I’m taking it as a lesson to be pickier when trying new styles. Below, I’m discussing below several of the swaps I’ve made to move my wardrobe and personal style in a more elegant and less trend-driven direction that will (hopefully) withstand the test of time.
