I Attended A Secret Screening of ‘The People’s Joker,’ The Movie Warner Bros. Doesn’t Want You To See

I will give everybody one “love letter to cinema” pass this year, but only if it’s used to describe Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker.

This superhero parody reminded me of what makes cinema great. It reminded me of studying film at Pratt Institute and being ashamed of liking mainstream movies. It reminded me of the first time I watched a Marvel movie in 2018 and instantly immersed myself in the fictional universe. It reminded me of the first time I watched Batman and was left disappointed (I always thought Batman’s superpower was turning into bats, turns out he’s just a sad, rich guy with dead parents, and he’s also a cop.)

Lastly, it reminded me of how special the theatrical experience can be when we screen movies in an unpretentious environment, one that encourages its viewers to appreciate the work, rather than critique it.

Viewing My People’s Joker in a 35-seat microcinema in Brooklyn (Spectacle Theater, check them out) at a totally-legal, invite-only screening was an experience unlike any other. From the moment I walked through the door, the room was abuzz with anticipation – some of us were people who wanted to catch the movie during its run at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival before the drama happened, others were Drew’s friends and various cinephiles who have been following the movie since its creation. There were a few special guests in the audience, including an animator who worked on the final fight scene and Drew’s longtime collaborator-slash-the actor who voiced Penguin in the movie.

In all, it was a special space for a special occasion that screamed, “The People’s Joker is back, baby, and there’s nothing Warner Bros. can do about it.”

At the top of the screening, Drew did a brief introduction, stating, “This film is protected by US copyright law, it’s fair use,” a sentiment which she repeated throughout the evening. “I hope you all enjoy it, I love watching this with people. I’m so excited to watch this with all of you,” she added.

And then the movie played.

The People’s Joker is a mixed-media alien egg that utilizes live-action film, 2-D animation, Robot Chicken-esque stop motion, and hand-drawn backdrops. At its surface, the movie is an unauthorized re-telling of Joker’s origin story with the eponymous character portrayed by Drew. But beyond that, it is a coming-of-age exploration of Drew’s experience with her own sexuality and gender identity.

When fictional Vera first expresses to her mother (portrayed by Lynne Downey), as a child, that she feels “trapped in the wrong body,” the parent reacts in fear. The child is taken to a conversion therapy-esque institution where she is prescribed Smylex – a drug that forces you to smile. Later in the film, an adult version of Vera expresses that hard things are easier to handle when you’re smiling and pretending to be happy.

For obvious reasons, this mentality leaves her fairly fucked up. She decides to travel from her hometown of Smallville to Gotham City to disrupt the status quo – a.k.a, form an illegal underground clown posses in protest of Lorne Michaels and his comedy troupe’s reign on the clowning industry which resulted in a Footloose-like ban on outside comedians – this storyline gives way to introducing various iconic DC characters and witty commentary directed towards what Drew knows best: comedy.

As this plays along, she begins to fall in love with a less-successful member of her club, Mr. J (Kane Distler), who turns out to be an abusive buttwipe (surprise, surprise).

In retrospect, describing The People’s Joker feels like a fever dream, but I hope it further translates into just how special this movie is. With its psychedelic visuals, rock tunes, and sentimental value, this movie left me thinking about John Mitchell Cameron and Stephen Trasks’ Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Along with being an exploration of queerness, the comedy is a story about love and finding yourself, and it even includes an epic musical sequence that puts whatever Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are working on to shame.

Unfortunately, the movie hasn’t had a traditional distribution process. After the movie’s premiere screening at TIFF, Drew found herself facing threats from Warner Bros., which led her to cancel its subsequent screenings and film festival appearances. At the time, Drew referred to the conglomerate’s behavior as “bullying” and later, it was revealed to the Los Angeles Times that Warner Bros. letter contained a veil threat. It read, “While Ms. Drew’s personal experience is moving and compelling, copyright law prohibits appropriating the Batman character and universe as the vehicle for telling that story.”

However, last night wasn’t about that. The screening gave Drew and her supporters an opportunity to celebrate what Drew had accomplished and the post-screening Q&A kicked off without a single question about the Warner Bros. legal interference.

Drew recalled her initial inspiration behind the movie and how it started as her first “real film commission” from a friend who had Venmo’d her $12 to re-edit 2019’s Joker. “She said she would only watch Joker if I did, like, an Abso Lutely Productions, like fart-edit, of it, basically.” From there, it blossomed into a COVID project that made Drew “fall back in love with Batman.” Her colleagues in the audience vouched for her with Penguin actor Nathan Faustyn recalling that he came on board when the script was unfinished, but nonetheless, “fantastical.”

Drew, who co-wrote (with Bri LeRose), directed, and edited the film, went on to share her experience revisiting the iconic DC movies. “I mean, to me these characters are queer. It was honestly really fun going back and examining like [Christoper] Nolan’s Batmans [The Dark Knight trilogy] and seeing the themes of identity perpetuation of trauma and what we’re expected to do as men and women inside of a fucking failing state,” she said.

“But yeah, I really was ready to see a colorful gay version of it, because it was long overdue, and I miss Joel Schumacher,” Drew added, and it would be remiss to not add that the entire movie is dedicated to the late filmmaker, along with Drew’s mom. “I wanted to lead the charge of reminding everybody that he was one of the best we ever had. Just one of the best mainstream filmmakers,” she said.

When a question was posed about the future of the film, the comfortable, safe space illusion was shattered, and the audience was reminded, once again, of the legal wet blanket that greed has imposed on Drew’s film and the future of cinema, as a whole – the very reason why we were all sweating our asses off in a small, packed theater after trekking through the rain on a Thursday night to catch a top-secret, totally-legal screening of a movie that has no concrete plans to be made public. “We’re figuring that out,” Drew answered.

“The movie is a parody. It’s protected by Fair Use,” the filmmaker explained, comparing her work to a documentary film and highlighting its personal spin. “The only reason it ruffled any feathers was because nobody’s ever done anything on this level. Nobody has ever been as sick as me. I really do think that’s it.”

But all hope hasn’t been squashed. “I really do see a world where this could get some sort of traditional limited release, and we’ll see what happens. Every time I screen this, it’s like punching a hole into the universe and I am completely out of control. So who knows where we’ll be next week with our legal status,” Drew continued.

She said, “I’m really hopeful for the future. I think at some point or another, everybody’s gonna be able to see it. And that’s all that is important to me.”

Henry Cavill’s Superman Return Was Opposed by Warner Bros., Black Adam’s Dwayne Johnson Reveals

Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has revealed that Warner Bros. did not want Henry Cavill back as Superman. In a video celebrating the DC Comics film topping the Apple TV chart in the US, the actor praised Cavill’s return during the post-credits scene, before taking some shots at the larger figures at play at DC Films (now DC Studios). “At the end of the day, the studio was not bringing Henry Cavill back — inexplicably and inexcusably,” he said, further stressing that the idea has been years in the making. “But we weren’t gonna take no for an answer.”

Johnson then voiced his appreciation for Cavill’s take on Superman, calling him the “greatest” and noting that everything in the DC Comics universe circles back to him. “There was no way, there’s no viable, logical way that you can attempt to build out the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. It’s impossible to do.” A previous report suggested that Johnson had been hatching the idea for Cavill’s return as Superman for the past four years, which was rejected by DC Films president Walter Hamada, who wanted to stray far from Zack Snyder’s foundation and continuity.

The disapproval drove Johnson to meet with Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who approved Cavill’s inclusion in Black Adam. At the time, Hamada had plans to introduce a Black Superman, based on the fictional US President Calvin Ellis from Earth-23 in DC Comics. The executive has now silently exited the studio and heads the horror genre at Paramount Pictures.

Meanwhile, Cavill confirmed that he’s back to play the red-caped superhero, with reports claiming that a Man of Steel sequel is at play in the Warner Bros. Discovery offices. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) is attached to produce, as a hunt for writers goes on.

Now that Black Adam and the Justice Society of America (JSA) have been introduced to the public, Johnson intends to start building out the DC Universe “properly, strategically, smartly.” “Again, the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has changed,” he said, referring to the newly appointed co-heads at the brand-new DC Studios, filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran. The pair will oversee all upcoming DC Comics movies, shows, and animated projects — the former tends to the creative side, while the latter takes care of things on the business and production end.

Released on October 20, Black Adam grossed a worldwide total of $378.1 million (about Rs. 3,090 crore), as it introduced a bunch of new superheroes to the DC Universe. The film marks The Rock’s career-best opening weekend as the lead actor. Black Adam is now available on video-on-demand platforms in the US. An India OTT date is not known.

Netflix Beats Estimates to Reverse Subscriber Slump, Says Ad-Supported Plan to Attract 4.5 Million Subscribers

Netflix reversed customer losses and provided a slightly more bullish outlook than Wall Street expected, projecting a new ad-supported streaming option would help attract 4.5 million subscribers by year’s end.

From July through September, Netflix attracted 2.4 million new subscribers worldwide, more than double the 1.07 million consensus forecast of analysts polled by Refinitiv.

During the quarter, Netflix released the final episodes of sci-fi hit Stranger Things plus serial-killer series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which became one of Netflix’s most-watched series of all time.

The streaming giant is working to kick-start membership growth after a sudden decline in the first half of the year, when the company’s subscriber base shrunk by 1.2 million amid a rocky global economy and growing competition for online video viewers. Netflix now has a total of 223.1 million subscribers around the world.

Most established services have stopped growing in the US, where the market has reached maturity. Newer entrants, such as Paramount Global‘s Paramont+, are picking up market share thanks to live sports programming.

In its quarterly letter to shareholders, Netflix noted that rival media companies are losing money as they try to attract streaming viewers.

“Our competitors are investing heavily to drive subscribers and engagement, but building a large, successful streaming business is hard,” the letter said.

Netflix estimated that competitors would end 2022 with combined operating losses of “well over $10 billion (roughly Rs. 8300 crore),” compared with Netflix’s annual operating profit of $5 billion (roughly Rs. 41,500 crore) to $6 billion (roughly Rs. 50,000 crore).

For the third quarter, Netflix topped Wall Street projections with revenue of $7.9 billion (roughly Rs. 65,500 crore), up 6 percent from a year earlier. Earnings were $3.10 (roughly Rs. 260) per share.

The company’s forecast of 4.5 million customer pickups by the end of 2022 came in slightly ahead of Wall Street estimates, which had averaged 4.2 million. For the fourth quarter, Netflix is projecting revenue of $7.8 billion (roughly Rs. 64,700 crore) – a sequential decline it blamed on the strong value of the US dollar.

Netflix is launching a $7-per-month (roughly Rs. 600) streaming plan with advertising in early November to attract cost-conscious customers, a move executives had long resisted. Walt Disney, Warner Bros Discovery and other companies also offer, or plan to offer, ad-supported options in the battle for audiences.

While Netflix is making various changes to propel growth, the company said it remained committed to releasing all episodes at once to allow binge watching.

“We believe the ability for our members to immerse themselves in a story from start to finish increases their enjoyment but also their likelihood to tell their friends, which then means more people watch, join and stay with Netflix,” the company said.

A new season of British royalty drama The Crown and a sequel to 2019 movie Knives Out also will be released during the fourth quarter.

Dwayne Johnson Spoils Black Adam, Teases Major Return in Post-Credits Scene

Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson is spoiling his own movie, ahead of its release next week. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, The Rock confirmed that the highly-requested heavyweight bout between him and Superman will be set up, in the upcoming DC Comics film. Henry Cavill, who played Superman in the Zack Snyder trilogy, is returning to the franchise, and will possibly make an appearance in Black Adam. Black Adam is set to release in theatres on October 20, in English, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil.

“We’ve established Black Adam as the most powerful and unstoppable force on our planet. But the fans have been so passionate about, as we have been, where’s the most unstoppable force in the universe? Where is he?” Johnson tells ET, during the New York premiere. “We’ve all been fighting for this moment. So I will say this: Welcome home.” This is in regard to Cavill’s appearance in the film, who was sidelined after 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. As for Cavill’s return to the larger DC Universe, neither Warner Bros. nor the actor himself has disclosed any information.

Black Adam to Ram Setu, the 7 Biggest Movies in October

As often happens with superhero films, the post-credits scene from Black Adam was reportedly leaked online, with Cavill’s Superman stepping out of a smoke cloud and confronting Black Adam. “It’s been a while since anyone’s made the world this nervous,” the former says, teasing a clash between the titans, in a future entry. Warner Bros. has been on the hunt, issuing copyright takedowns to have the footage pulled from across Twitter and TikTok. A spokesperson for the latter confirmed the claims to Variety.

As evidenced by an earlier report, Johnson has been super vocal about wanting to bring Black Adam and Superman together, onto the silver screen — stating that’s the “whole point” of the film. Johnson has spent the last 15 years, trying to introduce Black Adam to the mainstream media, even once securing an appearance on David F. Sandberg’s 2019 film, Shazam!. Plans were later changed, with the antihero receiving a solo origin story slated for 2021, which saw further delay, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Black Adam heralds a new era of power in the DC Universe, introducing five new superheroes to the franchise. Besides Johnson’s Teth/ Black Adam, we have the Justice Society of America (JSA), roping in Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher. Viola Davis (The Suicide Squad) will also make an appearance as Amanda Waller, commanding officer for the expendable field team Task Force X.

Black Adam releases in cinemas worldwide on October 20. In India, the DC Comics movie will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

DC Films Eyes Lego Franchise Producer Dan Lin as New Head, in the Vein of MCU’s Kevin Feige: Report

DC Films might have found its Kevin Feige in Dan Lin. The executive-turned producer is reportedly in contention to overlook all upcoming movies and TV series for the superhero arm. The decision comes in the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav laying out a 10-year plan for the DC brand — kickstarting a “reset” under a new team, focused on quality over quantity. The move will see current DC Films President Walter Hamada stepping down, paving the way for Lin to take over.

New candidate Lin, known for producing the Academy Award-winning The Lego Movie, is one of the strong contenders to take on the role. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the proposed system will skip three division heads — Warner Bros. Pictures’ heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, HBO/ HBO Max chief Casey Bloys, and Warner Bros. TV chair Channing Dungey — putting control in the hands of one person.

Lin also shepherded 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie, noting in a podcast earlier this month, that in 2008, he almost got the job of “overseeing the entire DC franchise.” At the time, he was working on a now-cancelled Justice League film with Oscar-winning filmmaker George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road).

Reports claim that Hamada, the current head of DC Films, would transition out of the role. THR’s sources claim that the involved parties are discussing salary and the future of Lin’s production company Rideback. That said, the current DC chief will oversee the Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam’s cinematic release on October 21. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Hamada was not consulted on the shocking cancellation of the live-action Batgirl movie, starring Leslie Grace in the lead.

Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed that cancelling Wonder Twins, Batgirl, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt was a difficult part of this strategy, but it did not fit their vision to maximise financial returns. Other reports indicated that Batgirl underwent test screenings, with audiences calling it “irredeemable.” The movie, which was originally planned for an HBO Max release will not see the light of day, in cinemas or on the streaming platform.

CEO Zaslav stated earlier this month, that he was looking for a Kevin Feige-like figure to guide the DC Films brand over the next 10 years. Similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where all character stories are interwoven with each other, and eventually build up to a dramatic climax. At Warner Bros. Discovery’s earnings call webcast, he also confirmed that Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, alongside the problematic Ezra Miller-led The Flash, have been marked safe for release. However, the David F. Sandberg-directed Shazam! sequel has been delayed to a March 17 release date.

Even James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom got pushed to December 25, 2023, as it needs more time in post-production. Meanwhile, Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux is in the early stages of production, while Matt Reeves has begun co-writing The Batman sequel with Mattson Tomlin. Both are deemed quality products by the WBD offices.

Netflix Names Microsoft as Technology and Sales Partner for Ad-Supported Subscription Plan

Netflix said on Wednesday that it has selected Microsoft as technology and sales partner for its planned ad-supported subscription offering, as the streaming giant looks to plug slowing subscriber growth by rolling out a cheaper plan.

Shares of Netflix rose 2 percent to $178.06 (nearly Rs. 14,100) on the news.

Netflix announced in April that it would introduce a new, lower-priced version of its service in a bid to attract more subscribers. The announcement came as the pioneering subscription service posted its first subscriber loss in more than a decade, and projected deeper losses to come.

Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters said in a blog post that Netflix chose Microsoft because of its ability to innovate over time, as well as its for its strong privacy protections.

“It’s very early days and we have much to work through. But our long-term goal is clear. More choice for consumers and a premium, better-than-linear TV brand experience for advertisers,” Peters said.

Microsoft President Brad Smith has served on Netflix’s board since 2015.

Microsoft also announced the news in a blog post stating that “at the launch, consumers will have more options to access Netflix’s award-winning content.”

It was reported earlier on Wednesday that Netflix is looking to tweak its programming deals with Hollywood studios to enable the streaming pioneer’s launch of an advertising-supported version of its service, as per a The Wall Street Journal report.

The company has started talks with Warner Bros., Universal, and Sony Pictures Television, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

It will also need to renegotiate agreements for older television shows such as Breaking Bad from Sony and NCIS from Paramount Global, according to the report.

Netflix told Reuters it is still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower priced, ad-supported option, and added that it is all just speculation at this point.

Warner Bros., Universal, and Sony did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Earlier in June, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said Netflix is in talks with several companies for advertising partnerships.

Mickey7: Steven Yeun Said to Be Cast in Parasite Director Bong Joon-Ho’s Sci-Fi Thriller Movie

Steven Yeun and filmmaker Bong Joon-ho are reunited for Mickey7, the director’s forthcoming sci-fi thriller at Warner Bros., following their collaboration on the 2017 Netflix film Okja.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Yeun will join Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette in the cast. The project, which has yet to be named, will be based on Mickey7, a novel written by Edward Ashton and released in February.

Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter and Andy Wier’s The Martian have been compared to Mickey7. Mickey7, a man on a mission to populate the ice planet Niflheim, is at the core of the story. When he dies, he regenerates as a clone with the majority of his memories still intact.

This disposable worker accepts assignments that are too dangerous for anybody else. A fresh clone, Mickey8, has replaced Mickey7 when he returns to the mission’s base after being assumed dead.

With Dooho Choi for Kate Street Picture Company and Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B, who produced Okja, Bong will produce through his Offscreen company. The studio’s overseer will be Peter Dodd, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Yeun, who received an Oscar nod for his performance in Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, will next be seen in Jordan Peele’s suspenseful film Nope, where he will co-star with Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer. The Netflix comedy-drama Beef starring Ali Wong is among his next projects.

Bong is best known for the black comedy thriller Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, before picking up three Oscars, including Best Picture.

Warner Bros. has not yet set a release date for Mickey7.

Dune: Part Two Production to Begin Later in July: Report

Dune: Part Two is set to begin production later this month, according to a new report. A two-day pre-shoot is said to start today in Altivolve Italy at the Carlo Scarpa-designed Brion Tomb, which is located in the Veneto region and is a perfect fit in the Dune universe. Full-fledged production on Dune: Part Two with the cast reportedly begins July 21 in Hungary, where the first part too was shot. There’s no word, however, on who all will be part of this schedule nor is anything known about when it’ll end.

Deadline brings word of Dune: Part Two beginning filming this month. The report, however, doesn’t contain any details about the scenes/sequences nor the cast members involved.

Dune Movie Review: Epic, Brave, but Mightily Flawed

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, who worked in the same capacity on the 2021 film, the second Dune film is touted to be “bigger and better” than the first part. Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin reprise their respective roles from Dune. Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux among others are the new additions to the Dune: Part Two cast.

The Dune sequel was originally slated to hit the screens in October 2023, but Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures recently delayed the Dune: Part Two release date by nearly a month to November 17, 2023. The revised date means, that for now, it will debut in cinemas on the same day as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel to The Hunger Games tetralogy.

When it opened in cinemas in 2021, Dune emerged as a commercial success, grossing nearly $401 million (about Rs. 3,168 crore) globally on a budget of $165 million (about Rs. 1,303 crore). The sci-fi epic received largely positive reviews, though we took a much dimmer view of it.

Dune: Part Two begins filming July 21 in Hungary. The Dune sequel is slated to release November 17, 2023 worldwide.

Furiosa, a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, has officially begun filming as announced by Chris Hemsworth on Thursday. This movie delves into the past of Furiosa before her fated encounter with Max. Fury Road starred Tom Hardy as the titular character of Max and introduced audiences to the character of Furiosa played by Charlize Theron.
