Kohrra to The Witcher Season 3: Top Movies and TV Series to Watch on Netflix Right Now

Despite the public outcry, the changes to Netflix’s password-sharing system have simply helped the streamer grow in power, with nearly 6 million new members joining the platform recently. With the ongoing Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strikes in full effect, I don’t really blame them for it, given the streamer is one of the few studios that’s best prepared for the oncoming content drought with a robust, long-running slate. Coming to this weekend, the slate is led by renowned favourites such as The Witcher season 3 and Bird Box Barcelona, as well as new Indian originals such as Kohrra, a procedural investigation thriller helmed by Paatal Lok creator Sudip Sharma.

Every week, Netflix compiles a list of its most trending content, from compelling dramas to more action-oriented affairs such as Hidden Strike, the new pair-up between Jackie Chan and John Cena. Of course, content such as Lust Stories 2 is going to rank high up on the list for expected reasons, though I was surprised to see the Randeep Hooda-led crime-thriller series CAT up on there, apparently having spent six weeks among India’s Top 10 list. You can check out the entire hierarchy by visiting the official website, but for now, let’s focus on some of the best films and TV series you could binge-watch on Netflix right now.

One Piece to Ahsoka, The Biggest Web Series Releasing in July

Maamannan

It’s always interesting to see comic actors like Vadivelu take on intense roles, with Maamannan putting him in the shoes of the titular veteran statesman and his son Veera (Udhayanidhi Stalin), who are pulled into a violent power struggle when a cold-blooded politician charts his rise to power. Fahadh Faasil plays the vengeful and entitled Rathnavelu, Salem’s district secretary, who discriminates against people based on caste, often at loggerheads over political shifts with his rival, insisting how even progressive ideals would fall prey to casteism in time. The film also stars Keerthy Suresh (Dasara) as an educator for the less privileged, and Lal (2018) as the fictional Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The Witcher Season 3: Vol. 2

Over the years, The Witcher series took a nosedive from being a highly-praised fantasy epic, to gradually veering from the source material to focus on its world-building and politics. In what serves as the last hurrah for Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, it was revealed that the mysterious mage Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) had been sowing discord across the Continent. Our trio of heroes Geralt, Sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan) must now face hordes of monsters and mages to thwart evil, as the stone-cold witcher slowly comes to terms with his feelings.

Hidden Strike

Hidden Strike puts iconic death-defying actor Jackie Chan and WWE legend John Cena on the same team, to escort a group of civilians across the Iraqi roads after an oil refinery gets attacked by mercenaries. Tonally, it’s something along the lines of the Rush Hour films, a buddy-comedy filled with endless banter and over-the-top action sequences, as our heroes dodge RPGs, blast rooftops during old-fashioned standoffs, and fail to understand the simple mechanics of a hand-grenade. Scott Waugh — best known for Need for Speed — directs the film, which also stars Game of Thrones veteran Pilou Asbæk as the mercenaries’ leader Owen Paddock.

Bird Box Barcelona

The events of Bird Box Barcelona run parallel to the ones in the US, which you might have already seen in the original Sandra Bullock-led version. Threatened by a mysterious force that has begun annihilating the human population by forcing them to kill themselves, a father and daughter — Sebastián (Mario Casas) and Anna (Alejandra Howard) — venture through the desolate streets of the titular Spanish city, in hopes of finding a safe haven. But when they run into a group of other blindfolded strangers, they learn of another imminent threat that seems more formidable than the unseen creatures. Helmed by returning directors Àlex and David Pastor, the movie also enlists Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) and Diego Calva (Babylon) in the cast lineup.

Kohrra

When an NRI Punjabi named Paul is found murdered just before his arranged marriage in the countryside of Jagrana, Punjab, two police officers — Amarpal Jasjit Garundi (Barun Sobti) and Balbir Singh (Suvinder Vicky) — must work together to unravel the mystery, which opens a pandora’s box of a dysfunctional family’s secrets, deceit, and infidelity. To make matters worse, the victim’s close friend Liam (Ivantiy Novak), a British national, goes missing, prompting an investigation process more serious than regular routine checks. Kohrra explores the customs of the NRI community which makes up a sizeable population in greater Punjab, in addition to themes of masculine ego.

James Gunn denies Gal Gadot ‘booted’ from ‘Wonder Woman

James Gunn is wielding the Lasso of Truth.

DC head James Gunn, 56, said Monday that “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot was not “booted” from the franchise, reports The Independent.

Following the box office failure of “Wonder Woman 2” and Gunn’s ascension to co-chair and CEO, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” director shelved the third installment of the franchise.

The announcement to shelve the project came days after Gadot, 37, tweeted how excited she was to continue playing the superhero.

“I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU. The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you,” Gadot tweeted.

Gunn recently caused a Kryptonite-level scandal after choosing to nix Henry Cavill from playing Superman. The actor also recently stepped down from his role in Netflix’s “The Witcher.”

“I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” Cavill posted on Instagram ““After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

Fans said Gunn’s decision to boot both Cavill and Gadot did not inspire confidence.

Henry Cavill’s Superman Return Was Opposed by Warner Bros., Black Adam’s Dwayne Johnson Reveals

Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has revealed that Warner Bros. did not want Henry Cavill back as Superman. In a video celebrating the DC Comics film topping the Apple TV chart in the US, the actor praised Cavill’s return during the post-credits scene, before taking some shots at the larger figures at play at DC Films (now DC Studios). “At the end of the day, the studio was not bringing Henry Cavill back — inexplicably and inexcusably,” he said, further stressing that the idea has been years in the making. “But we weren’t gonna take no for an answer.”

Johnson then voiced his appreciation for Cavill’s take on Superman, calling him the “greatest” and noting that everything in the DC Comics universe circles back to him. “There was no way, there’s no viable, logical way that you can attempt to build out the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. It’s impossible to do.” A previous report suggested that Johnson had been hatching the idea for Cavill’s return as Superman for the past four years, which was rejected by DC Films president Walter Hamada, who wanted to stray far from Zack Snyder’s foundation and continuity.

The disapproval drove Johnson to meet with Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who approved Cavill’s inclusion in Black Adam. At the time, Hamada had plans to introduce a Black Superman, based on the fictional US President Calvin Ellis from Earth-23 in DC Comics. The executive has now silently exited the studio and heads the horror genre at Paramount Pictures.

Meanwhile, Cavill confirmed that he’s back to play the red-caped superhero, with reports claiming that a Man of Steel sequel is at play in the Warner Bros. Discovery offices. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) is attached to produce, as a hunt for writers goes on.

Now that Black Adam and the Justice Society of America (JSA) have been introduced to the public, Johnson intends to start building out the DC Universe “properly, strategically, smartly.” “Again, the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has changed,” he said, referring to the newly appointed co-heads at the brand-new DC Studios, filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran. The pair will oversee all upcoming DC Comics movies, shows, and animated projects — the former tends to the creative side, while the latter takes care of things on the business and production end.

Released on October 20, Black Adam grossed a worldwide total of $378.1 million (about Rs. 3,090 crore), as it introduced a bunch of new superheroes to the DC Universe. The film marks The Rock’s career-best opening weekend as the lead actor. Black Adam is now available on video-on-demand platforms in the US. An India OTT date is not known.

The Witcher Season 3 Netflix Release Set for Summer 2023, Teaser Art Revealed — Tudum 2022

The Witcher season 3 is slated to release in the summer of 2023. At its online-only event Tudum 2022, Netflix dropped a teaser art for the Henry Cavill-led dark fantasy series, featuring Geralt’s shattered medallion — whose fragments take the shape of a swallow and a star. Season 3 follows Geralt’s journey into the fortress of Aretuza, as he yet again escorts Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan), who was revealed to have the Elder Blood coursing through her veins. Anya Chalotra returns to play Yennefer the sorceress, who maintains a complicated relationship with him.

Plot details for The Witcher season 3 are vague, but clues from the teaser image indicate that this chapter will see the trio working together, to protect Ciri from danger. For the uninitiated, the swallow symbol translates to Zireael, which is an old gwyhyr sword forged by gnomes in Tir Tochair — given to Ciri as a gift. Meanwhile, the upside-down star-like symbol is the Obsidian, which is worn by Yennefer in both the Netflix series and the CD Projekt Red video games.

In season 2, Geralt (Cavill) discovered that Ciri possessed some otherworldly powers, far beyond the knowledge of a monster hunter. Therefore, he seeks ex-lover Yennefer’s help, to understand its complexities and how she could master it to avert any dangers. But upon reaching the grounds of Aretuza, the group realises they’ve landed in a battlefield, brimming with political corruption, dark magic, and treachery.

The Witcher Season 2 Review: Better, but Henry Cavill’s Netflix Series Has Still Some Ways to Go

Filming for The Witcher season 3 began in April, with Netflix revealing its director lineup of four. This includes Stephen Surjik (The Umbrella Academy), Gandja Monteiro (Brand New Cherry Flavor), Loni Peristere (American Horror Story), and Bola Ogun (Lucifer).

Everyone besides Surjik — who directed the first two episodes of The Witcher season 2 — is new to the world of The Witcher. Going by past trends and the fact that there are four directors, we could assume each director gets to helm two episodes each, in the upcoming season. The Witcher season 3 also ropes in new members Meng’er Zhang (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Robbie Amell (The Babysitter).

The Witcher 3 is set to release in the summer of 2023, exclusively on Netflix. Mind you, that’s the American summer, not Indian.

Enola Holmes 2 Trailer: Millie Bobby Brown Heads Her First Official Case at Tudum 2022

Enola Holmes 2 trailer is here. On Saturday, at its online-only event Tudum 2022, Netflix unveiled the first trailer for the Millie Bobby Brown-led mystery sequel, ahead of its release on November 4. Based on the eponymous young-adult novel series, this next chapter sees the teen detective return to tackle her first official case. Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham-Carter reprise their roles as elder brother Sherlock Holmes and matriarch Eudoria, respectively. Harry Bradbeer returns to direct from a script penned by Jack Thorne.

The Enola Holmes 2 trailer begins with our young detective (Brown) getting chased by local police officers — presumably over some misunderstanding. Fashioned in a fourth-wall-breaking format, where Enola explains the premise of the sequel. “My name is Enola Holmes. I started a detective agency,” she says proudly — only to realise that life as a female detective-for-hire is not as easy as it seems. Sunken in the shadow of her older, more established brother Sherlock (Cavill), one day, luck catches up to her, in the form of a penniless matchstick girl.

“My sister. She disappeared a week ago,” the unnamed girl says, which is instantly met with a yes. “At last, I would be a detective in my own right, worthy of the Holmes name,” a confident Enola says. The Enola Holmes 2 trailer also hints at romance, as we are introduced to Viscount Tewkesbury (Louise Partridge), the runaway heir to the late Marquess of Basilwether. As clues unravel themselves, our heroine crosses paths with her brother, who reveals that their cases are related — causing them to team up once again, albeit reluctantly. You know, the classic sibling rivalry.

Enola Holmes 2 also stars Susan Wokoma, who reprises her role as Edith, the historical British martial artist who taught Eudoriamartial arts. New joinees to the cast include David Thewlis (Wonder Woman), who is portrayed in the trailer as a rich connoisseur of sorts, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Dune).

Enola Holmes 2 drops November 4, exclusively on Netflix worldwide.
