Netflix Geeked Week 2023 Announced, Lineup Includes Stranger Things, Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, and More

Netflix’s annual Geeked Week digital showcase is back, offering glimpses at its upcoming projects. The virtual event kicks off November 6, marked Stranger Things Day, and continues throughout the week until November 12, with news and sneak peeks from highly anticipated projects such as Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action adaptation, and more. In addition to the official Geeked Week website, the show will be available to stream on Netflix’s YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook accounts. With the streamer’s gradual pivot into gaming, fans can expect some exciting development on that end as well — presumably, the ability to cloud stream games onto a TV.

The streamer has dropped a partial schedule for what to expect from each Geeked Week showcase, in varying lengths. We kick off with Stranger Things Day, where I’d expect updates for the fifth and final season of the eponymous sci-fi series, still aiming for a 2025 release despite the ongoing Hollywood actors’ strike. In it, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is expected to play a major role as our heroes explore the history behind the parallel realm of the Upside Down universe — the place where the Demogorgon and Mind Flayer popped out of. There’s also a Stranger Things animated series in development at Netflix, whose events are supposedly set after the mainline show, with a style similar to cartoons from the 1980s. The company is leaning heavily on animated adaptations, promising new looks from Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft and the Devil May Cry series.

On November 9 at 1pm PT in the US —Nov 10, 2:30am IST in India —Netflix will bring teasers for The Umbrella Academy season 4, The Dragon Prince, and Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series. The studio just dropped a first look at its multiple Fire Nation characters, with Daniel Dae Kim (Stowaway) playing Fire Lord Ozai, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, and Elizabeth Yu (May December) as Princess Azula. The creators of the original Nickelodeon series Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino were attached as executive producers and showrunners, but later exited the project due to creative differences. I’m guessing Netflix will adapt the first season of the anime-styled series akin to how they adapted One Piece live-action from the first East Blue Saga arc from the manga and anime. Speaking of which, it appears that One Piece will be a part of Geeked Week as well, seeing as it was recently renewed for a second season.

November 10 brings more news on the live-action take on Yu Yu Hakusho — out December 14 — the popular spirit detective anime from Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi. Then there’s 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of author Cixin Liu’s book, where a young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time. It’s from the creators of Game of Thrones — David Benioff and D. B. Weiss — so a lot of eyes will be on this one. On November 11, we get more details on the long-gestating fantasy film starring Millie Bobby Brown, Damsel, alongside some exclusive footage to prime us for the Scott Pilgrim anime, coming November 17.

Closing things off on November 12 at 4:30pm PT — Nov 13, 6am IST — is Snyder’s highly-anticipated dystopian space opera, Rebel Moon. The interstellar adventure follows an enigmatic young woman Kora (Sofia Boutella), who embarks on a trip to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help take a stand against the oppressive empire led by the Regent Balisaurus. For the uninitiated, the film has been divided into two halves, with Part 1: A Child of Fire eyeing a December 22 release on Netflix, and Part 2: The Scargiver out on April 19, 2024. In an interview, the director also promised additional explicit cuts of both parts as well. Bear in mind that the aforementioned titles are merely highlights and that Netflix is likely to have more surprises in store for us.

Netflix House Physical Retail Stores Selling Merchandise, Themed Food and More to Launch in 2025

Netflix is reportedly set to open brick-and-mortar retail stores called Netflix House in the US, as part of the company’s efforts to expand beyond its streaming business. As per Bloomberg, these fun spaces would allow fans to shop for merchandise, eat themed food, and engage in activities based on their favourite movies and shows, such as an obstacle course reminiscent of Squid Game. The streaming platform plans to build the first two sites in 2025 in the US, before expanding to other regions — akin to how studios build theme parks and experiences based on their IP. For now, there isn’t much information on the stores, but the project marks Netflix’s first permanent experience fixture — one focused on multiple IPs.

“We’ve seen how much fans love to immerse themselves in the world of our movies and TV shows, and we’ve been thinking a lot about how we take that to the next level,” Josh Simon, VP, Netflix Consumer Products told Bloomberg. Netflix primarily sells merchandise through its online storefront, ranging from T-shirts based on the popular Stranger Things to a marionette of the long-nosed wooden puppet boy from the stop-motion film Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Netflix has previously dabbled with successful pop-up shops, albeit for a limited time, which is possibly how the company decided on the concept for a permanent one. Its most popular one was Stranger Things: The Experience, tossing visitors inside a recreation of the Hawkins Lab with an immersive story and special effects. There was also a Bridgerton-inspired ballroom dance event and a Money Heist-themed escape room.

“Don’t think of it like Disneyland,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said at the Bloomberg Screentime Conference. “[It’s] something you might go to a couple of times a month, not just once every couple years.” Netflix House is poised to feature ‘rotating installations’ ranging from ticketed experience shoes to restaurants boasting both fast food and fine dining experiences — including alcohol.

Earlier this year, it launched Netflix Bites in Los Angeles, a pop-up eatery that served dishes based on its original shows. The restaurant has since closed, but it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume that it served as a testing ground for what the company has planned next. The report also notes that Netflix sees this business as a means to promote its IP, rather than a revenue source.

Netflix retired its 25-year-long running DVD rental service in September, given the demand for physical media slowly diminished as streaming came to the forefront. For now, there’s no word on whether Netflix House would sell any DVDs, which would be ironic given the streamer was effectively involved in the closure of rental stores like Blockbuster.

A report from earlier this month suggested that Netflix was planning to raise its subscription prices once the Hollywood actors’ strike ends, starting with the US and Canada.

Avatar 3, Avatar 4 Scenes Already Shot to Avoid ‘Stranger Things Effect,’ James Cameron Reveals

As Avatar: The Way of Water rides waves across theatres, director James Cameron has now coined a new phrase called “the Stranger Things effect.” Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker claimed that certain footage for Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 was shot in tandem with the second Avatar film, in order to avoid the child actors from inevitably growing up, and showing signs of ageing. The multi-year project had to be covered in a single production, “Otherwise, you get — and I love Stranger Things — but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” Cameron said.

While it was easy for leads Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña to slip into their roles whenever, it never stopped the child actors’ growth spurts. Jack Champion, who portrays Miles “Spider” Socorro, the adoptive human child of Jake Sully and Neytiri, was 14 when Avatar: The Way of Water began filming. “We shot with Jack when he was 14 and 15, almost up to 16. So we were shooting him over an 18-month period,” Cameron told EW. The actor is now an adult, he turned 18 in November. Production would continuously switch between filming scenes for The Way of Water, the entirety of Avatar 3, and act one of Avatar 4.

Avatar: The Way of Water Review: James Cameron Gives Us the Biggest ‘Video Game Movie’ Ever

Sure, performance capture could turn returning star Sigourney Weaver into a teenager, Kiri, but there are limitations to performance capture VFX. Trinity Jo-Li Bliss plays Tukt, the youngest child of Jake and Neytiri, and was cast in Avatar 2 when she was about seven years old. She’s now 13. Similarly, Bailey Bass, 19, who played the shoreline Metkayina clan’s Tsireya was about 12 when she auditioned for the sequel. While not as prominent, the effects of ageing are definitely noticeable in Netflix’s Stranger Things, where the male leads’ voices got deeper with each season. Cameron wanted to avoid that, and built on the Pandoran arc as quickly as possible, whilst leaving out a few unanswered questions at the end of each entry. “You can call it sequel bait, but I’m not trying to justify a sequel,” Cameron said in the interview. “We’ve already shot the other d–n movie. I don’t have to sell it to anybody.”

Speaking to Variety earlier this year, Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau briefly touched upon the filming process for the follow-ups in the franchise, noting that there were “logistical reasons” for the steps they took. And now we know why — to prevent the “Stranger Things effect”. Cameron also made bold claims about his Avatar universe, stating that he was even prepared to end the franchise with a trilogy if Avatar 2 underperformed.

In its first week, Avatar: The Way of Water has now surpassed the $600 million (about Rs. 5,052 crore) mark at the global box office. While its production budget hasn’t been explicitly mentioned, Cameron suggested that the film has to become “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history, to break even.”

The notion of filming three films back-to-back never seemed daunting to Saldaña, at least from a plot and thematic standpoint. “We did read-throughs, we discussed extensively where we were, we defined those beats that distinguished [Avatar] 2 from 3,” she told EW. “So from where I was standing, I never felt that it was uncomfortable or anything, but that just has to do with the amount of time that we took in preparation for this. Jim makes you a part of the whole process and hears you. Every need that you have, he takes great attention to that detail and tries to the best of his ability to accommodate and incorporate your input.”

Avatar: The Way of Water is now playing in theatres in India, in English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. Avatar 3 is slated to release in December 2024, followed by Avatar 4 in December 2026.

‘Stranger Things’ star Noah Schnapp is ‘brutally bummed’ out by Nutella

Noah Schnapp isn’t nutty about Nutella.

The “Stranger Things” star – who created TBH (To Be Honest), a vegan alternative for the beloved hazelnut cocoa spread – told Page Six exclusively via email that he was “shocked and brutally bummed out” when he discovered the product’s ingredients.

“Hazelnuts aren’t the main ingredient, and the amount of sugar alone made me realize I wasn’t doing myself any favors,” Schnapp, 18, said.

The New York-born actor also noted that Nutella uses palm oil, which “is responsible for mass deforestation,” something he “couldn’t support.”

Indeed, Nutella’s main ingredient is sugar.

“Based on the Nutella nutrition label that states each two-tablespoon serving has 21 grams of sugar, there are approximately 210 grams of sugar in a 13-ounce jar of Nutella. That’s more than quadruple the sugar in a 16-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola,” reports mic.com, with registered dietitian Caroline Passerrello adding, “By weight, Nutella is 55% sugar.”

Additionally, palm oil is a “major driver of deforestation…destroying the habitats of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino,” reports the WWF.

To continue encouraging people to give up Nutella, Schnapp has launched a crowdfunding campaign for tbh, and is asking others to invest as little as $50 through Republic, a fintech company that he co-founded.

“I believe value-aligned investing is more important than focusing only on sustainability because I really believe we can vote with our dollars,” he explained, noting that not all of Republic’s investments are environmentally based, as he loves “social networks and gaming and other things.”

Schnapp is also learning about investment at the University of Pennsylvania, the Wharton School of Business, majoring in entrepreneurship. He told us he can “definitely” see himself “launching a venture capital fund in the next year.”

And as for his side hustle, playing Will Byers in the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” Schnapp is proud that his character is gay.

“Will’s character arc started in Season 1, and with each new season, we’ve peeled back another layer of who he is and part of that is his sexuality,” he explained. “Will has always struggled with who he is and figuring out how to fit in, which is something many people can relate to.”

He continued, “I’ve had a lot of fans express how much they can relate to Will and his journey, which makes me very happy to hear. It has made me so proud that we’re writing this very real character that makes our viewers feel seen.”

‘Stranger Things’ star Millie Bobby Brown teases potential music collab with Mariah Carey

Could Mariah Carey be working on new music with Millie Bobby Brown? Stranger Things have happened.

The 18-year-old “Enola Holmes” actress teased a potential collaboration with the 5-time Grammy winner during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Speaking to Fallon, Brown revealed she shares an unlikely friendship with the “We Belong Together” hitmaker — much to the host’s surprise.

The “Stranger Things” star, who plays Eleven on the hit Netflix show, said Carey’s children are fans of her character on the show, prompting her to meet them.

After developing a sweet bond with 11-year-old twins Morocco and Monroe, whom Carey shares with ex-husband Nick Cannon, Brown explained what she and the singer get up to during her visits.

“I’ll just go over and we’ll sing together,” she revealed, adding that the pair even sang in Carey’s state-of-the-art studio.

“We have sung together, yeah,” she added before Fallon asked if fans could expect a joint collab.

“Potentially, I don’t know,” she responded, calling Carey “the most talented singer ever.”

“We texted today. Yeah, she called me today,” the teen said. “The reason is because she grew up in the public eye and we have connected just on so many different levels.”

“I also just love the way she leads her life with so much power and she just has so much knowledge and she’s so wise. She’s just been such an incredible guiding light for me,” she added.

Netflix Confirms Stranger Things Spin-Off and Play Based on Original Idea by the Duffer Brothers

Netflix’s wildly popular Stranger Things is getting a spin-off series and a new stage play set within its creepy supernatural world, the streaming giant said on Wednesday.

The sci-fi horror following a group of teenagers in a fictional US town as they battle monsters from another dimension is one of Netflix‘s flagship and most-watched shows.

Stranger Things 4 sits atop the streaming giant’s all-time viewing rankings for English-language shows, which use a metric of total hours watched within 28 days of release.

It has clocked up more than 1.15 billion hours — a figure likely to rise as the final episodes only dropped on Friday, and is only surpassed by South Korean smash hit Squid Game.

Sibling creators Matt and Ross Duffer had already said season five would conclude the show’s “complete story arc,” but teased in an open letter to fans in February that there were “many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things.

On Wednesday, Netflix confirmed a “live-action Stranger Things spin-off series based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers.”

A “new stage play set within the world and mythology” of Stranger Things is also on the way, with Stephen Daldry (The Crown) set to direct.

The projects come under a sprawling “overall deal” between the brothers and Netflix which “aim to create the kind of stories that inspired the Duffers growing up — stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary.”

“Matt and Ross are an exceptionally unique talent with a vision so crisp and clear,” said Netflix content boss Ted Sarandos.

“They are all about the details — it’s no accident that Stranger Things has pierced the zeitgeist to become the epic pop culture phenomenon it is today.”

The news comes with Netflix facing unfamiliar pressure, having lost subscribers earlier this year after years of uninterrupted growth, and seeing its share price plummet.

Stranger Things: Millie Bobby Brown teases that season 4 will see her character ‘in the darkest state ever’

Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown has said that season 4 of Netflix’s smash supernatural horror series would see her character Eleven reach her darkest point yet. Stranger Things is set in the fictitious town of Hawkins, Indiana, and follows the adventures of a group of teenage friends as they try to explain what’s going on in their town.

However, Stranger Things 4 takes place six months after the epic season 3 finale, which witnessed the demolition of the secret Russian base in Hawkins’ mall, which attempted to establish a link to the Upside Down, and the alleged death of police chief Hopper (Harbour). An early season 4 teaser revealed that Hopper is still alive and would be shown fighting to survive his strange confinement in a Russian work camp in Kamchatka.

Trailers and marketing for the forthcoming season have also stated that spectators would get to watch how the younger protagonists navigate high school while coping with the emotional aftermath of the previous six months and fighting a battle against Vecna, a new danger from the Upside Down. Interestingly, Brown has now revealed a bit more about what fans can anticipate from Eleven in the new season, and it seems that the telekinetic heroine is going to have a particularly difficult time. Millie said as per Screenrant, “I read the script and I see Finn and some of the other characters having such a fun time, and you get to see Eleven in the darkest state she’s ever been [in]. This is definitely the hardest season I’ve ever filmed and there have been some of the scariest things I’ve ever seen as a human, which you guys will get to see and I’ll get to tell more stories and touch on my experiences as a person filming on the set with these legitimate scary things.”

The claim that Eleven will be at her “darkest state” in season 4 will almost certainly spark conjecture about how far this will affect the supernatural happenings around her and her pals as they face yet another villain from the Upside Down. Stranger Things Season 4 premieres on May 27, so fans won’t have to wait long to see how Eleven handles her emotional issues while dealing with her inter-dimensional ones.
