Robert De Niro’s ex-assistant wins $1.2M in gender discrimination trial

Robert De Niro’s company Canal Productions was found liable for gender discrimination and retaliation against his former longtime personal assistant, Graham Chase Robinson, in the pair’s civil trial.

A jury in New York City federal court reached the decision Thursday after nearly five hours of deliberations and ordered Canal — which the actor formed to look after his business and personal needs — to pay Robinson, 41, more than $1.26 million in damages.

De Niro, 80, is to make the payments in two installments of $632,142, according to the Associated Press.

However, the four-woman, three-man jury found him not personally liable.

Additionally, Deadline reported that Robinson was cleared of any financial wrongdoing in her 11 years as an employee for the Oscar winner.

Per the outlet, De Niro was not present for the hearing, but Robinson was. She reportedly hugged one of her attorneys upon hearing the verdict.

“We’re thrilled with the verdict. Couldn’t be happier. She’s been totally vindicated,” a member of her team told reporters outside the courthouse as Robinson smiled through tears.

Another one of her lawyers told People in a statement, “We are delighted that the jury saw what we saw and returned a verdict in Chase Robinson’s favor against Robert De Niro’s company Canal Productions.

“Not only did Ms. Robinson win her case against Canal, but the jury completely vindicated Ms. Robinson by finding De Niro’s claims against her to be without merit.”

During the two-week trial, the “Goodfellas” star admitted on the stand that he “berated” Robinson and likely called her “petulant,” “snippy” and a “f—king spoiled brat,” but he denied screaming at her.

“I’ve raised my voice,” he explained. “I don’t yell. You wanna dispute that? That’s one thing I don’t do.”

However, the “Godfather Part II” star raised his voice several times throughout his testimony, including when he called Robinson out after he was accused of not paying her fairly compared to another male staffer.

“We’re thrilled with the verdict. Couldn’t be happier. She’s been totally vindicated,” one of Robinson’s attorneys said.

“Every little thing she’s trying to get me on is nonsense!” he exclaimed. “Shame on you, Chase Robinson.”

He went on to dismiss other allegations of gender-based discrimination as “ridiculous.”

De Niro also conceded that his girlfriend, Tiffany Chen, “might have been saying” disrespectful things about Robinson, but he implied it was acceptable because Robinson was being disrespectful first.

Robinson began working at Canal in 2008 and acted as the vice president of production and finance — which allowed her to sign off on grand expenses without approval — before she abruptly left the company in April 2019.

Canal then filed a $3 million lawsuit against her that August for allegedly misusing and misappropriating funds.

Two months later, Robinson returned the favor with a $12 million lawsuit citing workplace and sexual harassment as well as sexism.

Toronto International Film Festival Unveils Packed Lineup Despite Actors’ Strike

The Toronto International Film Festival, North America’s largest, on Monday, unveiled an A-list lineup of world premieres amid the Hollywood strikes, including movies starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Seth Rogen. The festival, which has been a launchpad for numerous Oscar-winning movies, is moving ahead with plans for its September 7 to 17 event in the face of doubts over whether the big names will come to promote their work. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) is on strike in a battle with studios over pay and other work conditions, meaning that its members generally cannot promote films produced by studios and streamers involved in the dispute.

However, SAG-AFTRA negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland told Hollywood news outlet Deadline that actors could benefit from some kind of ‘interim agreement’ to head to Toronto in support of independent features. On the list of world premieres slated for TIFF are several expected award contenders including ‘Dumb Money‘, starring Rogen and Paul Dano, about the amateur investors who turned GameStop into a Wall Street phenomenon in 2021. De Niro stars in actor Tony Goldwyn’s ‘Ezra’, about a man (Bobby Cannavale) who moves back in with his father (De Niro) after blowing up his career and marriage.

Other world premieres include Taika Waititi’s sports comedy ‘Next Goal Wins‘, French filmmaker Ladj Ly’s drama ‘Les Indesirables’, Atom Egoyan’s ‘Seven Veils’ starring Amanda Seyfried, and Michael Keaton’s ‘Knox Goes Away’, starring Pacino. Also on tap is the international premiere of awards hopeful ‘The Holdovers‘ from director Alexander Payne (Sideways) about a teacher (Paul Giamatti) tasked with supervising students at a boarding school who cannot go home for Christmas break.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said in a statement that the lineup showcased a “rich tapestry of talent, vision, and storytelling.” The Toronto film fest is a key part of the fall festival lineup, along with Venice and Telluride, at which movies hoping to build early Oscars momentum typically hold lavish premieres.

TIFF’s annual People’s Choice Award has become an increasingly accurate Oscars bellwether, predicting eventual best picture winners such as ‘Nomadland’, which took home the Academy Award in 2021, and ‘Green Book’. The event only returned to full strength in 2022, after two years of online or hybrid events staged amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon Sets October Release Date

The upcoming historical drama film Killers Of The Flower Moon finally has a release date.

According to Variety, Killers of the Flower Moon, a historical drama about the serial targeting and murder of members of the oil-rich Osage tribe, will release in limited theatres starting October 6 and will then have a wide release on October 20.

Helmed by Martin Scorsese, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro (The Irishman), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), as well as Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), and Lily Gladstone (Reservation Dogs).

Killers of the Flower Moon is being produced by Apple Original Films, and will then begin streaming on Apple TV+ at an unspecified date. Paramount Pictures will partner with Apple on the theatrical release of the film. It is expected to be a major awards season player, reported Variety.

The film marks the director and the Oscar-winning actor’s next big collaboration after Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Audition, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Select film festival-goers may get a glimpse at the film before the autumn, with multiple sources claiming that the movie is expected to debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “where it will be one of the splashiest premieres,” as per Variety.

Apart from that, DiCaprio was last seen in the satirical Don’t Look Up which streamed on Netflix. The film gathered positive feedback from the netizens and also starred Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, and Jonah Hill in prominent roles.

Scorsese, on the other hand, last directed a crime thriller film The Irishman, starring De Niro in the lead role.

Accused De Niro burglar Shanice Aviles wants to apologize

She just might be a raging bullsh-tter.

A notorious accused serial thief charged with burglarizing Robert De Niro’s Upper East Side townhouse whined that she couldn’t believe authorities had the audacity to arrest and jail her.

“I’m being held here on burglary — burglary!” roared Shanice Aviles, 30, during an exclusive jailhouse interview with The Post at Rikers Island. “I didn’t take any of his stuff. I didn’t have any of his stuff on me.”

Aviles has been fingered as one of the Upper East Side 19th Precinct’s “top five burglars,” according to law enforcement sources. Her rap sheet lists at least 26 prior arrests, including 16 this year alone for burglary and petty larceny.

So at around 2 a.m. on Dec. 19, cops were tracking Aviles when, she told The Post, she was heading to her Upper Manhattan home after visiting her brother in Long Island City. She said she stopped in front of an East 65th Street apartment, where the 79-year-old “Goodfellas” actor happened to be asleep upstairs and his daughter in a bedroom, after she saw the basement door ajar.

Aviles is a serial and known thief in the Upper East Side, with a rap sheet including at least 26 arrests.

“It felt like it was a set up” by police, Aviles fumed, without explaining why she decided to barge into the A-lister’s luxe apartment — which she said she found out was De Niro’s only after being cuffed.

“I love his movies, all of them! My mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, we all used to watch them,” she said, tears streaming down her face to her dark green uniform, explaining that she didn’t intend to cause him any trouble.

During the hour-long interview, Aviles repeatedly pleaded for a chance to say she was sorry to her Hollywood hero, who told reporters he was “OK” after the incident.

“I would love to apologize to him,” she said.

“People have said he’s mean, that he’s not a nice guy, but I think he’s a good guy,” she added. “He could’ve made some calls and made my bail a lot more.”

Police disputed Aviles’ sob story, stating in a criminal complaint that officers witnessed the suspect testing the locks on commercial buildings’ doors in the neighborhood, before using a tool to break into DeNiro’s home.

Once inside, Aviles wasn’t impressed with the Oscar winner’s $69,000-a-month, four-story rental, which sources said is decked out with photos of De Niro.

“There was dog crap” on a doggy pad, Aviles recalled, along with food baskets from bakeries. “It didn’t look like someone was there.”

Officers followed her into the apartment, where they caught her wearing a pair of headphones she stole from De Niro’s home and fiddling with his iPad as she rummaged through the presents underneath “The Irishman” star’s Christmas tree, according to the complaint and sources.

Aviles was slapped with a second-degree burglary charge for the Grinch-worthy heist — just a week after a judge waived her $5,000 bail on charges in a recent string of burglaries so that she could enter a drug treatment program.

For the DeNiro break-in, a Manhattan Criminal Court judge ordered Aviles be held on $40,000 cash bail, noting she’d skipped out on rehab.

“I couldn’t afford [that],” she moaned, swearing she would attend a treatment program if a judge would give her another chance.

Aviles, who faces up to 15 years on the top charge, blamed the hefty bail on the fact that she was found in the home of one of the world’s most famous actors, rather than her extensive criminal history.

“I think the judge is a fan,” she griped.

Robert De Niro’s New York City townhouse burgled while he was home

A female burglar was caught going through Robert De Niro’s Upper East Side townhouse early Monday — grabbing Christmas gifts from underneath the actor’s tree and playing with his iPad, law enforcement sources told The Post.

A “known burglar,” Shanice Aviles, 30, broke into the “Irishman” star’s home around 2:30 a.m.

Officers with the NYPD’s 19th Precinct Public Safety team had spotted Aviles trying to open doors to commercial buildings before she made her way inside De Niro’s home.

“She was stealing Christmas presents,” a police official confirmed to The Post.
