Qualcomm to Launch New Flagship Snapdragon Chipsets on March 18; Said to Be Snapdragon 8s Gen 3

Qualcomm has confirmed to host an event to announce new flagship Snapdragon chipsets. The chipmaker is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chips during the event, as the company’s latest SoCs. Both the chipsets are reportedly built on the same architecture as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which was introduced in October 2023. Notably, the soon-to-be-released Realme GT Neo 6 series is rumoured to incorporate both the upcoming processors.

The event was announced through a post on Weibo (via GizmoChina), where the company said (as per translation by Google), “The new Snapdragon flagship is about to be released [..] Wisdom is in the core. On March 18, please look forward to the Snapdragon flagship new product launch conference.” It is believed that the phrase “Wisdom is in the core” refers to artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, which might be added to the upcoming chipsets.

While Qualcomm did not reveal which chipsets were being introduced, the GizmoChina report claims that it could be the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC. Both processors have been heavily rumoured over the last few months, and various leaks have highlighted multiple smartphones that are likely to be equipped with them. The rumoured Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset reportedly features one Cortex-X4 core with a clock speed of 3.01GHz, four Cortex-A720 cores with a clock speed of 2.61GHz, and three Cortex-A520 cores with a clock speed of 1.84GHz in the CPU. It is said to be paired with an Adreno 735 GPU.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC could feature one Cortex-X4 core with a clock speed of 2.9GHz, four Cortex-A720 cores with a clock speed of 2.6GHz, and three Cortex-A520 cores with a clock speed of 1.9GHz in its CPU, which is said to be paired with an Adreno 732 GPU. Both chipsets are reported to be based on the same architecture as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

An earlier report claimed that the Realme GT Neo 6 series could be equipped with both the rumoured chipsets to become one of the first smartphones to flaunt the new Qualcomm silicon. The standard model is expected to get the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC, whereas the Realme GT Neo 6 SE could get the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip. Apart from them, the iQOO Neo 9, OnePlus Ace 3V, and Vivo Pad 3 could also run on the upcoming processors.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Series Tipped to Run on Exynos Chip in All Markets

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series broke cover in January during its Galaxy Unpacked event. While the in-house Exynos 2400 SoC powers the regular Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ in markets outside the US including India, the Galaxy S24 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC across all countries. A tipster now suggests that Samsung will use only Exynos SoCs in the entire Galaxy S25 series next year. However, the Galaxy Z Fold phones coming in 2025 are said to use Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets.

Tipster Connor (@OreXda) on X claimed that the next Galaxy S series smartphones will use Exynos SoCs. This indicates that next year’s Galaxy S25 lineup could come equipped with the yet-unannounced Exynos 2500 SoC. This year’s Galaxy S24 phones run on Exynos 2400 SoC in select regions.

Further, the tipster claims that 2025’s Galaxy Z series foldable phones will only use Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. If Samsung’s past launches are anything to go by, presumably the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be powered by next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC. The entry-level and mid-range Galaxy A series are tipped to come with a mix of MediaTek and Exynos SoCs in 2025.

However, Samsung is yet to reveal plans for its 2025 product lineup. Also, the names of the next-generation chipsets from Qualcomm and Exynos are not yet known. Therefore, this leak should be considered with a grain of salt.

As mentioned, Samsung used both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and Exynos 2400 in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ this year. In multiple markets such as the US, China, Japan and Canada, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. In all other countries including India, they run on the Exynos 2400 chipset. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, in contrast, packs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip across all markets.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 has a starting price tag of Rs. 79,999 for the base 8GB + 256GB variant in India, the Galaxy S24+ pricing starts at Rs. 99,999, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a starting price tag of Rs. 1,29,999.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 Specifications Leak Online, Test Frequencies Hint at Midrange Performance

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 is tipped to make its debut as the successor to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chip and its specifications have surfaced online, giving us an idea of what to expect from the next-generation midrange mobile processor. A tipster has leaked some of the current test frequencies of the upcoming chip, and the values suggest that it will be slightly slower than the previous generation. Qualcomm launched its current Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chip in March 2023.

According to details shared by tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) on Weibo, Qualcomm’s purported Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 is an octa-core chipset with an Adreno 720 GPU. It will be equipped with a Cortex-A715 prime core clocked at 2.63GHz, three performance cores, and 4 efficiency cores clocked at 2.4GHz and 1.8GHz, respectively.

If we compare the specifications of this chip with the one launched by Qualcomm earlier this year, it appears that the new chip will be slightly less powerful than the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. Unveiled in April, the mobile processor is paired with an Adreno 725 GPU. It is equipped with a prime Cortex X2 core clocked at 2.91GHz, three Cortex-A710 performance cores with a peak clock speed of 2.49GHz and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores, clocked at 1.8GHz.

The tipster claims that smartphones from manufacturers such as Vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi will feature the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, which bears the SM7550 model number. Just like its predecessor, it will be built on TSMC’s 4nm process, which means it can be expected to offer better power efficiency compared to other smartphones with midrange mobile processors.

Qualcomm is yet to announce a launch date for the purported Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip — the company unveiled the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 in March with a Snapdragon X62 modem, support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Android Ready SE for digital car key support. We can expect the company to reveal details of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 in the first quarter of 2024.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Benchmark Score Hints at Big Improvement in Graphics Performance

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is expected to be unveiled by the chipmaker at its upcoming Snapdragon Summit 2023 event next month. The company has not yet revealed any details of the anticipated successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that was unveiled last year, but several leaks related to its performance have surfaced online in recent months. Now, a benchmark of the purported chipset has surfaced online, giving us an idea of what to expect from the next flagship mobile processor from Qualcomm.

A listing for the purported Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (via tipster Ice Universe) was posted to the benchmarking site Geekbench on Monday. The listing is titled Qualcomm Pineapple for arm64 and refers to the same codename for the chipset that is expected to debut as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 next month. Qualcomm is yet to confirm the name of its next smartphone chip.

According to the entry, the Geekbench 6 Vulkan score for the chip is 15,434 points in the Vulkan test. This is much higher than the score for two gaming smartphones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that were released last year. The most recent entry for the Nubia Z50S Pro indicates a score of 10,125 points, while the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate scored 9,101 points.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that powered most flagship smartphones in 2023 is equipped with an Adreno 740 GPU, and the next-generation chipset is expected to feature an Adreno 750 GPU. The Geekbench scores indicate that the graphics performance on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC will be around 50 percent higher than its predecessor.

Back in June, an AnTuTu benchmark listing for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was spotted on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, with a score of 17,71,106 points. The score was much higher than all the top-ranking devices at the time, including the iQoo Neo 8 Pro (13,58,352), OnePlus 11 5G (13,24,440), and Oppo Find X6 Pro (13,07,816). 

However, it is worth taking these scores with a pinch of salt as smartphones launched with the upcoming chipset could offer varying levels of performance based on their build quality, thermal management technology, and software optimisation. We can expect to learn more about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset in the days leading to its debut at the Snapdragon Summit 2023 event in October.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC Details Leak, Tipped to Feature Reworked CPU Clusters, Drop 32-Bit Support

Details about Qualcomm’s next-gen flagship SoC have begun trickling in, months ahead of its expected debut. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC is said to feature a restructured CPU cluster layout, and will most likely support only 64-bit computing, removing all 32-bit support. The chip is said to be codenamed either Lanai or Pineapple, and is expected to be launched in late 2023, possibly during Qualcomm’s annual Summit in Hawaii. If the company’s past launches are anything to go by, then we’ll probably also see debut of a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 SoC as a mid-year refresh with improved thermal performance and power efficiency. It’s hard to say if the Gen 3 SoC will actually arrive in phones this year or if we will have to wait until 2024.

The details come via a thread on Twitter by Kuba Wojciechowski (@Za_Raczke) who claims that this next-gen chip will have the model number SM8650, and will be codenamed Lanai, or Pineapple. The tweet states that it will have a new CPU configuration with a 2+3+2+1 structure. This includes two ARM Hayes (A5XX) “Silver” cores, three ARM Hunter (A7XX) “Gold” cores, two ARM Hunter (A7XX) “Titanium” cores, and one ARM Hunter ELP (Xn) “Gold” core. This will be Qualcomm’s first chip to have “Titanium” cluster and as of now, it’s unclear how it will differ from the “Gold” cluster. Wojciechowski mentions that this new cluster could be configured differently with more cache, or could simply be clocked higher.

The tweet further explains that the ARM Hunter and Hunter (ELP) are brand new, unannounced CPU cores. This new cluster configuration will be very different from the current 1+4+3 layout, and seems to contradict the earlier leak we had which suggested the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would have a 1+5+2 configuration.

Wojciechowski claims that Qualcomm’s code also confirms that this SoC will only support 64-bit computing. The GPU in the upcoming chip is said to be the Adreno 750 and currently has a peak clock speed of 770MHz — although it’s possible that this could change by the time the SoC is announced. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is also said to run on version 6.1 of the Linux kernel with Android 14.

Previous rumours suggested that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC could launch early this year and would receive a 25 percent bump in performance. If this is indeed true, then it’s also possible that Qualcomm might skip a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 model and directly release its successor.
