Thor: Love and Thunder Teaser: Chris Hemsworth Tries to Deliver an Inspiring Speech

Thor: Love and Thunder has gotten a new teaser trailer, over two weeks from release. Early on Tuesday, Marvel Entertainment released a new one-minute teaser for the fourth Thor film to pique the curiosity of fans. In the latest Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, we see the titular superhero (Chris Hemsworth) trying to deliver a speech to inspire allies to stay united in the face of an impending crisis. The focus soon shifts to Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, the menacing antagonist out to eliminate Thor, as he vows to wreak havoc. The latest Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer also features shots of characters such as Thor’s former lover Jane Foster/ Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) and the king of New Asgard Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) as they fight to survive.

Headlined by Hemsworth, Portman, and Bale, the Thor: Love and Thunder cast includes Russell Crowe as the Olympian god Zeus and Jaimie Alexander as Thor’s childhood friend Sif. Taika Waititi, who directs the film off his own screenplay, reprises his role as the Kronan Gladiator Korg. Additionally, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper will reprise their respective roles from the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

Thor: Love and Thunder story has garnered a fair deal of attention as it isn’t an overly dramatic or sombre affair. Waititi had earlier told Entertainment Weekly that it deals with universal themes: “It’s not a serious film, and it’s not a drama, but we do deal with ideas that I think a lot of humans deal with — universal themes about love and loss and our place in the world. Everyone sort of asks this question in the film: What is your purpose? What is the reason that you’re a hero, and what do you do when you have these powers?”

Thor: Love and Thunder debuts July 8 in cinemas worldwide. In India, Thor: Love and Thunder will release a day earlier on July 7 in English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.

I Am Groot Release Date Set for August 10 on Disney+ Hotstar, First Look Poster Out

I Am Groot release date and first look poster are out. On Sunday, Disney+ announced that the series of animated shorts I Am Groot, a spin-off from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series, will debut August 10 on the streaming platform. This means those in India will be able to watch it the same day on Disney+ Hotstar. Disney+ and Marvel Studios also shared the I Am Groot first look poster to pique the curiosity of fans. In it, we see Baby Groot sporting sunglasses, as he unwinds with his headphones on. We also get a good look at two, four-eyed penguin-like creatures, who appear to be staring at him.

The Marvel.com post for the I Am Groot first look poster does not specify the number of episodes. Nor does it reveal whether all episodes will be out together, or drop on a weekly basis. Expect these details to be revealed closer to the release date. Given the Marvel Cinematic Universe live-action series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law premieres a week later on August 17, and the fact that previous Disney+ animated spin-off shorts series have dropped all at once, the former seems likelier.

Vin Diesel is set to voice the titular character, just as he has on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. No word on the rest of the I Am Groot cast. The animated series will be directed by Canadian filmmaker Kirsten Lepore, who is best known for directing the “Bad Jubies” episode from the fantasy animated TV series Adventure Time. Ryan Little serves as the head writer on I Am Groot. As previously revealed, I Am Groot will revolve around “Baby Groot’s glory days growing up, and getting into trouble among the stars.”

MCU fans were introduced to Groot in 2014 when the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie released in cinemas. Baby Groot — his pocket-sized variant — subsequently appeared on our screens in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and soon emerged as one of the MCU’s most loved characters. Groot has since grown into an adolescent form, as seen on Avengers: Infinity War, which makes I Am Groot a prequel of sorts.

So, will I Am Groot add a new dimension to the walking flora’s popularity? We’ll find out when the series debuts August 10 on Disney+ and on Disney+ Hotstar wherever available.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Box Office Crosses $800 Million Milestone

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has grossed $803 million (Rs. 6,235 crore) at the worldwide box office, since its release in theatres on May 6, to emerge as the second-highest-grossing Hollywood movie of the pandemic era. The top spot, as we all know, is occupied by the Tom Holland-led superhero film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which raked in $1.89 billion (Rs. 1,46,766 crore) during its theatrical run. That said, the Doctor Strange sequel has outperformed films such as action thriller F9: The Fast Saga ($726 million), the James Bond thriller No Time To Die($774.2 million), and The Robert Pattinson-led DC film The Batman(($768.5 million).

Of the $803 million so far, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has collected $342.1 million (Rs. 2,655 crore) in the US and Canada. The remaining $461.1 million (Rs. 3,578 crore) came from nearly 49 markets elsewhere, with South Korea ($45.9 million), the UK ($43.8 million), Mexico ($35.7 million), and Brazil ($29.2 million) being the major contributors. The film, needless to say, hasn’t been released in China and Russia.

Doctor Strange 2 Review: The Multiverse of Madness is Too Much and Too Little

In India, the second Doctor Strange movie has collected nearly Rs.122 crore so far, overshadowing the Ranveer Singh-led Hindi-language comedy-drama Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might have benefited from the fact that it was released in India nearly a month and a half after SS Rajamouli’s Telugu-language period action drama RRR, and nearly three weeks after the Kannada-language actioner K.G.F: Chapter 2.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remained in top position worldwide during the May 20 to May 22 weekend, collecting nearly $32 million (Rs.2,484) in the domestic market alone over its third weekend. It faced limited competition from the historical drama Downton Abbey: A New Era as the film collected $16 million (Rs.1,241 crore) to secure the second spot on box office charts in the US. This, however, is not surprising as the title, a sequel to the 2019 feature film adaptation of the period TV show Downton Abbey, caters primarily to older adults.

The second Doctor Strange movie is, however, not the only film to make headlines this week as the action-packed adventure movie Uncharted — also starring Holland — crossed the $400 million (Rs. 31.03 crore) mark worldwide while the animated adventure feature Sonic the Hedgehog 2 crossed $375 million (Rs.29.09 crore). While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still has enough gas in the tank to put up good numbers in the days to come, it will face competition from the Tom Cruise-fronted action movie Top Gun: Maverick when it releases May 27 in theatres globally.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness explores the concept of a multiverse, which was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the Tom Hiddleston-led series Loki and examined further in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Headlined by Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Xochitl Gomez, and Benedict Wong in key roles.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is playing in cinemas globally.

Disney+ Grows to Nearly 138 Million Subscribers, Even as Profit Slips Despite Return to Parks

Disney on Wednesday said its profit slipped in the recently ended quarter but its theme parks and streaming service Disney+ were booming.

The entertainment giant reported net income of $470 million (about Rs. 3,645 crore), just over half of the $912 million (about Rs. 7,075 crore) profit it made in the same period a year earlier.

But park attendance that had fallen due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic rebounded and Disney+ gained 7.9 million subscribers to hit 137.7 million.

When adding in subscriptions to Disney’s streaming services Hulu and ESPN+, the overall number tops 205 million.

“Our strong results in the second quarter, including fantastic performance at our domestic parks and continued growth of our streaming services once again proved that we are in a league of our own,” said Walt Disney CEO Bob Chapek.

Chapek told analysts Disney is open to raising its streaming service subscription price in the future, but has no specific plans. Disney+ is pursuing a version of the service that would be supported by advertising, set to launch later in 2022.

Disney+ gained more subscribers than analysts had expected, in stark contrast to a dive in subscriber numbers reported by rival Netflix in the first quarter of this year.

A drop of just 200,000 users — less than 0.1 percent of the total Netflix customer base — caused shares in the Silicon Valley firm to plunge and prompted a shareholder to file a lawsuit accusing the streaming television titan of not making it clear that subscriber numbers were in peril.

“Disney+ has been taking Netflix out at the knees [in the US],” tech analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group told AFP.

“Kids have always chased their content, and for parents it has been a no-brainer to get their service.”

About half of Disney+ subscribers are families with children, executives said on the earnings call.

Disney stopped licensing its coveted content to Netflix to make it exclusive to its own streaming service, and said it planned to stick with the tactic when it comes to rivals in the market.

Parks and politics

Disney said that as its streaming television service continues to grow strongly, its resorts and parks are generally operating without any of the significant COVID-19 related restrictions on capacity that were in place last year.

The pandemic does continue to vex film and television show production, Disney said, but it has been able to release films in theatres so far this year.

“Our slate for the remainder of this year is incredibly strong,” Chapek told analysts while discussing the company’s line-up of shows for streaming and theatres.

Chapek acknowledged challenges getting Disney films released in China, saying the situation there is “very complicated” from political and business standpoints.

He said he was encouraged by the fact that a freshly released Doctor Strange film based on a Marvel comics character took in more than $500 million (about Rs. 3,877 crore) in its first week, even without being shown in China.

Disney has run into political turbulence closer to home, with the Florida governor recently signing a law that eliminates a statute that has for decades allowed the entertainment giant to act as a local government in Orlando, where it has a theme park.

The move was the latest episode in a dispute between the state’s Republican administration and Disney, after the company criticised the passage in March of a law banning school lessons on sexual orientation.

“From a financial standpoint, Disney will come out ahead with the plug pulled,” analyst Enderle said.

“It’s almost like Florida gave them a monetary favour; Disney was covering all the costs of the municipality they are in.”

The Reedy Creek Improvement District was an area created by Florida’s congress in 1967 to facilitate the construction of Disney World in Orlando.

Under that agreement, Disney runs the district as if the entertainment juggernaut were a local government, including collecting taxes and guaranteeing essential public services such as garbage collection and water treatment.

Under Florida law, if the special district is dissolved, its assets and debts would be transferred to local governments that surround the area.

“Removing district could transfer $2 billion (about Rs. 15,515 crore) debt from Disney to taxpayers,” state Democratic senator Linda Stewart warned after the bill was signed.
