Apple Offers Rare iPhone 15 Discounts in China Amid Slow Sales, Competition From Huawei, Xiaomi

Apple is offering rare discounts on its iPhone models in China, cutting retail prices by as much as CNY 500 ($70, or roughly Rs. 5,800) amid growing competitive pressure in the world’s biggest smartphone market.

The US tech giant cut prices of some iPhone models by 5 percent, its Chinese website showed on Monday. The time-limited promotion, branded as a Lunar New Year event, will last from January 18 through January 21 in a lead-up to the holiday in mid-February.

Sales of Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series of handsets have been far worse than previous models in China.

Home-grown rivals such as Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi offer competitive models, while sources have said some companies and government departments have been limiting staffers’ use of Apple devices – mirroring US government restrictions of Chinese apps on security grounds.

Chinese iPhone sales dropped 30 percent in the first week of 2024 versus the same period a year earlier, Jefferies analysts said in a client note, having fallen 3 percent for all of 2023. Analysts expect the competitive landscape to get tougher this year.

Apple has not cut prices for its latest iPhones in years. The cuts come after it surprised the market by not raising prices for the iPhone 15 series at its September launch.

Online shopping platforms including Pinduoduo have been slashing prices of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro by as much as 16 percent since the beginning of the year.

Nicole Peng, senior vice president of market research firm Canalys, said the discounts did not come as a surprise as Apple is under pressure to boost sales globally, and especially in China, amid intensifying competition and Apple fans’ growing reluctance to upgrade.

“It is clear that Huawei is making a comeback,” Peng said, “Some Chinese consumers may return to using Huawei as driven by patriotism.”

Canalys expects Apple sales this year to stay flat worldwide while suffering a slight decline in China.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Boat Climbs to Second Spot in Global Wearable Shipments in Q3 2023, Apple Leads the Way: IDC

Global shipments of wearables grew 2.6 percent year over year during the third quarter of 2023, according to a recent report. The global shipments of wearable devices reached an all-time high in the quarter. Shipment volumes in Q3 2023 surpassed that of the volumes recorded in Q3 2022 and Q3 2021. The growth is said to be a result of the inflow of smaller brands in the market as well as the inclusion of newer categories, like smart rings, in the race.

A report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) on Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker suggests that the total volume of wearable shipments in Q3 2023 was recorded to be 148.4 million units, resulting in a 2.6 percent year-on-year increase. It surpassed shipments of Q3 2022 and Q3 2021, which were 142.1 million and 144.6 million units, respectively.

A notable development identified through the report is the rise of Boat’s market share and shipment units. The wearable maker owned by Imagine Marketing shipped 14.3 units in the quarter, which accounted for 9.6 percent of the market share, second only to Apple, which shipped 29.9 million wearable units resulting in a lead market share of 20.2 percent. Xiaomi and Samsung had market shares of 7.8 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively, with 11.6 million and 10.7 million units of shipments.

Earlier this year, Boat launched its Smart Ring in India at Rs. 8,999. The wearable is said to monitor several health parameters including heart rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels, sleep, and body temperature and can also be used to make SOS calls.

Samsung, one of the world’s leading OEMs, has also been tipped to be working on a smart ring. It is reported to be the highlight at the 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event, which is likely to be held on January 17, in San Jose, US. The moniker of the rumoured wearable has not yet been confirmed, but like most fitness trackers, this smart ring is also expected to track, measure, and monitor the user’s health, fitness, and sleep-related data.

HarmonyOS Next Without Android App Support Nearly Ready to Roll Out to Huawei Smartphones: Report

HarmonyOS Next — the next-generation operating system for Huawei devices — is nearly ready and could be rolled out to users soon. According to a report, the native application for the upcoming HarmonyOS Next update have already been prepared for release. Instead of using Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code, HarmonyOS Next is reportedly built around the company’s kernel and system — which also means that Android apps won’t be supported on the operating system.

Huawei showed off HarmonyOS Next while it was in development earlier this year, after the number of HarmonyOS 4 installations crossed the 60 million mark. At the time, it was reported that the company had unveiled HarmonyOS Next as a “pure” version of the company’s mobile operating system that would not include Google’s Android libraries.

Ever since HarmonyOS was unveiled in August 2019, the company offered support for Android apps, thanks to the weak app ecosystem at the time. However, the Pandaily report claims that the company is finally set to drop support for Android apps.

As a result, not only will users be unable to install Android apps from official sources, but sideloading of apps in the popular Android package (APK) file format will also not work. Instead of APKs, HarmonyOS Next will support the company’s own HAP format, according to the report.

When HarmonyOS Next update arrives on eligible smartphones, users will no longer be able to run Android apps. The South China Morning Post reports that, Chinese firms like Meituan, NetEase, JD.com, and other Big Tech firms have been hiring HarmonyOS app developers via Liepin.com and Maimai — to build apps for Huawei smartphones. A developer preview of HarmonyOS Next is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2024

While Huawei is yet to provide a launch timeline for HarmonyOS Next, it’s evident that Android apps will no longer be supported on the operating system and companies in China are already working on supporting the company’s new app packaging format. We can expect to hear more about the operating system update when the developer preview arrives next year.

Samsung, Huawei to Release Affordable Foldable Smartphones Next Year: Report

Samsung was the first major OEM to bring foldable smartphones to the market. The South Korean brand that has released five iterations of the Galaxy Z Fold flagships, currently dominates the foldable market. A new media report says Samsung is shifting its focus to unveil foldables with affordable price tags starting next year. Meanwhile, Huawei is also reportedly gearing up to unveil competitively-priced foldable phones next year. Other Android manufacturers are expected to follow suit. Besides this, two triple-foldable screen phones are also said to go official next year.

As per a report by TrendForce, Samsung and Huawei will introduce more competitively priced foldable phones to the mid-range market next year to help reduce price barriers and make foldable phones more accessible. Huawei, which once dominated the foldable phone market, is reportedly working on a triple-foldable screen phone and it might go official before March next year. Two triple-foldable screen phones are expected to be introduced in 2024.

Android smartphone makers have been releasing new foldable phones in recent months. Over 13 foldable smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, OnePlus Open, Oppo Find N3, and Huawei Mate X5 were released within just three months.

As per the report, the lowest price for foldable phones has dropped to CNY 3,659 (roughly Rs. ) in 2023. In 2024, more brands could release higher-value foldable phone products, thus accelerating the broader adoption of foldable phones. Further, the report states that by the end of 2023, shipments of foldable smartphones could skyrocket to 18.3 million units, marking a 43 percent year-on-year surge. In 2024, a 38 percent growth is expected, almost 25.2 million units. By 2027, shipments could soar to 70 million units, seizing around five percent of the global smartphone market.

The report sits in line with an earlier leak that claimed that Samsung is planning to unveil Fan Edition versions of the foldable phones starting next year. Samsung is said to unveil the Galaxy Z FE model after the debut of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 next year. More Android manufacturers are expected to follow suit, driving accelerated expansion in the foldable phone market.
