Google Pixel 7a’s Tensor G2 SoC Might Be Different From That of Pixel 7: All Details

Google Pixel 7a was launched in May during the company’s I/O event with several notable improvements over the Pixel 6a. However, one of the prime improvements comes in the form of the chipset. Tipster Kamila (@Za_Raczke) on Twitter claims that the new Pixel 7a runs on a different lighter version of the Tensor G2 SoC than the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The “Pixel 7a uses a different, possibly slightly worse version of the Tensor G2 than the Pixel 7” he tweeted.

According to the tipster, Google uses Samsung’s services for the manufacturing of silicon dies as well as packaging. Both the original Tensor and Pixel 7’s Tensor G2 appear to use Samsung’s proprietary FOPLP (Fan Out Panel Level Packaging)-PoP (Package on Package) technology. He states that Google has developed a new version of the Tensor G2 SoC with inferior packaging called “IPOP” to reduce costs. As stated by Samsung, IPOP is thicker, and larger and generates more heat than the premium FOPLP technology.

In India, the Google Pixel 7a is priced at Rs. 43,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model. It is offered in Chalk, Snow, and Sea colour options.

Google Pixel 7a Survives JerryRigEverything’s Durability Test; Seems Better Than Pixel 7 Pro

Google Pixel 7a was launched last week during the company’s I/O event. The Pixel 6a successor runs on Google’s in-house Tensor G2 SoC and flaunts a 64-megapixel dual camera unit at the rear. It has an updated design with an IP67 rating. Now, YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything put the Pixel 7a through his durability test to see if it would fare like the Pixel 6a. The new handset appears to have survived most of Nelson’s different customary scratch, burn, and bend tests. The device did not, however, burn, break, bend or lose its shape during the tests and found to be solid than the expensive Pixel 7 Pro.

Zack Nelson in his latest episode of JerryRigEverything put the latest Pixel 7a through a slew of durability tests. The phone is first subjected to a scratch test on its OLED panel. Just like most other phones, the screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 started showing scratches at level 6 of the Mohs hardness scale. It gets deeper grooves at level 7.

Like the Pixel 6a, the Google Pixel 7a’s sides are made of metal. Nelson’s razor blade was used against the volume and power buttons and camera unit. The rear camera module also has a separate metal coating. In contrast to the Google Pixel 7 Pro’s glass panel, the Pixel 7a has a plastic rear panel. The fingerprint scanner of the device failed to function properly after receiving scratches.

The Pixel 7a has a 6.1-inch full-HD+ OLED display. The 90Hz refresh rate display remains stable under a lighter’s flame for 25 seconds before the pixels begin to turn white. However, the OLED panel completely recovers.

In the final round, the Pixel 7a was subjected to a bend test. The device held up admirably under the pressure and barely showed any signs of bending. “There is almost no flex at all when bent from the back and again almost no flex when bent from the front,” says Nelson. He claims that Pixel 7a clobbers the premium Pixel 7 Pro in the bend test and the durability of the new handset is significantly better than that of the Asus Rog Ultimate 7.

Both Pixel 7a and Pixel 7 run on Android 13. In terms of display, the latest device features a 6.1-inch full-HD+ OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The Pixel 7, on the other hand, has a 6.32-inch full-HD+ (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Google Pixel 7a has been launched as a part of Google’s product presentation that kicked off its I/O 2023 developer event. The handset 7a was launched alongside other Pixel products, which includes the new Pixel Fold foldable and the Pixel Tablet. The Pixel 7a will be available in an 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model in India. The smartphone is priced at Rs. 43,999 and will go on sale on Flipkart from May 11. As part of launch offer, buyers can get an instant discount of Rs. 4,000 when purchasing the phone using HDFC Bank cards. This brings the price down to Rs. 39,999. The Pixel 7a will be available in three finishes – Charcoal, Snow, and Sea.

The Google Pixel 7a offers a 6.1-inch full-HD+ OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, which is a first for the Pixel A-series as older phones have always gone with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 screen and also comes with HDR support. The phone’s fingerprint scanner is embedded in the display.

Google has upgraded the Pixel 7a’s processor to its latest Tensor G2 SoC, which also powers its premium Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. The processor, which also comes with its Titan M2 security co-processor, is offered with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Communication standards include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.3 and NFC along with support for the usual global positioning systems. There’s a USB Type-C (3.2 Gen 2) port at the bottom.

The phone comes with a 4,385mAh battery, which is smaller than the Pixel 6a‘s battery, and does not offer a charger in the box. However, Google has for the first time included wireless charging with the Pixel 7a and it supports the Qi charging standard.

For optics, the cameras on the phone have seen a noticeable upgrade over the previous model. The Pixel 7a offers a 64-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS). The ultra wide-angle camera has also been upgraded to a 13-megapixel sensor and the same goes for the selfie camera, which now has a 13-megapixel sensor. The phone measures 152mm x 72.9mm x 9mm in terms of dimensions and weighs 193.5g.

The phone offers the Google Pixel software experience with Android 13 and thanks to the updated Tensor G2 SoC also brings camera features like faster Night Sight, Long Exposure modes to the Pixel 7a.

Google Pixel 7a Tipped to Get Face Unlock Feature from Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro

Google is expected to launch a few smartphones soon. Among the highly anticipated devices, are the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a handsets. While Pixel Fold is scheduled to be the tech giant’s first foldable smartphone, the Pixel 7a is expected to succeed the Pixel 6a and extend the Pixel 7 series that launched last year. Several leaks and reports have hinted at many key specifications and features of the upcoming Pixel device, a new leak suggests that the phone will feature an additional security feature over its predecessor.

According to screengrabs shared by reliable tipster SnoopyTech (@snoopytech) in a tweet, the Google Pixel 7a is expected to come with a Face Unlock feature, alongside the commonly used fingerprint sensor, for added security. Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro devices also feature the Face Unlock feature. Previous reports suggest that the Pixel 7a is expected to feature the same G2 Tensor chipset used in the 7-series phones.

The Google Pixel 7a is also likely to be priced at $499 (roughly Rs. 40,900) in the US, which is $50 (roughly Rs. 4,100) more than its predecessor, the Google Pixel 6a, that debuted last year. The price increment can reportedly be attributed to the use of better or seemingly superior raw materials.

The SoC, likely to be the second-generation Tensor chip, on the Pixel 7a will reportedly be paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The phone is likely to boot Android 13 OS out-of-the-box.

Google Pixel 7a could be offered in Charcoal, Snow, Sea (light blue), and Coral colour options — the last of which will seemingly be a Google Store exclusive. It is also likely to come with a 64-megapixel Sony IMX787 primary sensor and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens and support 5W wireless charging. Expected to be unveiled on May 10 during the Google I/O event, the phone will likely go on sale immediately after launch.
