Google Workspace Update Brings a New Vids App, Generative AI Features

Google introduced new artificial intelligence (AI) features for its enterprise-focused cloud-based suite of productivity and collaboration tools, Google Workspace, on Tuesday. The announcements were made during the company’s annual Google Cloud Next event. The main highlight of the announcements was the new Google Vids app, an AI-powered video generation tool. New features have also been added to Google Meet, Gmail, Docs, Sheet, and more. Notably, the tech giant also announced new capabilities in its image-generating AI model Imagen 2.

The announcements were shared by Aparna Pappu, Vice President and General Manager, Google Workspace, in a blog post. The biggest addition was Google Vids, which the company positioned as a “video creation app for work”. It is not a video generation tool, but the AI can generate a storyboard that can be edited. Users are required to choose a style and a template to begin with, and then it picks stock videos, images, and background music to create a video based on prompts. Users can also add voiceovers by either selecting pre-set voices in the platform or using their own.

Google Meet is also getting an interesting feature. Earlier, the videoconferencing platform received a caption translation feature which allowed users to get a translated caption by manually selecting a preferred language. Now, Meet can automatically detect and translate captions in the user’s preferred language by listening to the language the user is speaking in. The tech giant is also adding 52 new languages in translated captions, bringing the total to 69 languages.

Apart from this, Google Sheets is getting a new ‘tables’ feature that can format and organise data. The company has upgraded the design of the workflow of the feature, making it more intuitive. A new set of templates has been added to fit more workspace use cases. Docs users will also get a new ‘tabs’ experience. The Search Engine maker said it will allow users to organise related information in a single document. People can also add full-screen cover images to personalise documents.

Finally, Gmail is also getting updated with new AI features. The ‘Help me write on Gmail’ mobile feature now comes with audio prompts capability, and users can speak their prompts to get an AI-generated email. The company also touted a new polish feature in Gemini in Gmail that will take rough notes and convert them into a complete email draft without any prompts. These features will be available to Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Business, and Google One AI Premium subscribers.

All of these features have either already been released or will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Google’s Gemini AI Is Said to Bring a Reply Suggestion Feature to the Gmail app on Android: Report

Google could be working on a feature for its Gemini Advanced subscribers, who have access to its Gemini Ultra artificial intelligence (AI) model and other bundled features. As per a report, the AI tool in the Gmail for Android app will now be able to suggest replies for emails in the inbox to save users from reading and drafting replies for all the emails. This feature is said to be under development but is expected to roll out to users soon.

According to a report by PiunikaWeb, in collaboration with tipster AssembleDebug, the feature was found hidden within the Gmail app. When a user opens an email on the app and clicks on a reply option to open the text field, a new panel opens right above the box. Labelled “Reply suggestions from Gemini”, the panel shows custom replies which appear to be based on the content in the email.

Based on the screenshots shared by the publication, it seems the replies do not utilise the full extent of the generative AI, as sharing an email to the web interface of Gemini creates a more detailed response. However, this does save time as the suggestions appear right on top automatically, as per the report. Upon clicking on a suggestion, it gets copied to the text field, and then it can either be sent directly or can be edited for better clarity.

In February, Google announced the integration of Gemini Ultra into Google Workspace apps, allowing users to access AI features in Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Meet with Gemini Advanced through the Google One AI Premium plan. The monthly subscription price for Google Advanced has been set at Rs. 1,950 a month in India, whereas in the US it costs $19.99 per month. The tech giant is also currently running a promotional offer where users can try it out for two months without a charge.

Alongside Gemini Ultra and integration with Google Workspace apps, the plan also offers 2TB of storage for Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail as well as other Google One Premium benefits.

Google Takes Steps to Curb Gmail Spam, Updates Email Sender Guidelines for Bulk Senders

Gmail users will soon see even less spam in their inboxes. Google is taking strict action to reduce spam emails and the firm has recently updated its Email Sender Guidelines, adding a long list of requirements from bulk senders, and shared a timeline for enforcing action. Gmail now requires bulk senders to authenticate their accounts to avoid getting error messages on sent emails, and eventually having them rejected. The tech giant first announced the planned changes to reduce spam in October last year and highlighted that starting in 2024, it will begin adding Gmail protections for a safer email inbox.

Bulk senders will now be required to follow a long list of guidelines to avoid being blocked by the company. These include setting up SPF and DKIM email authentication, ensuring domains have valid forward and reverse DNS records, keeping spam rates below 0.1 percent and avoiding ever reaching more than 0.3 percent, and more. Further, Google now requires marketing messages and subscribed messages to come with a one-click unsubscribe button and a visible unsubscribe link in the message body.

As per Google’s updated FAQ, a bulk sender is someone who sends more than 5,000 emails to personal Gmail accounts in a 24-hour cycle. All emails sent from a primary domain will count towards this number. Emails sent to Google Workspace accounts will not be considered a part of this, however, if a Workspace account sends messages to personal Gmail accounts, the rule will apply. Once an account has been assigned as a bulk sender, it cannot be removed.

The guidelines have come into effect starting in February. As per the shared timeline, bulk senders who do not meet the abovementioned requirements will begin receiving an error message on a small percentage of non-compliant emails. These errors will be temporary so the senders can resolve the issue at their end.

After April 2024, a certain percentage of non-compliant emails be rejected by the tech giant, and upon further repetition, the percentage will gradually increase. Google has not revealed the exact percentage for this.

Meanwhile, the guidelines highlight that the compliant portion of the emails will not be affected. Bulk senders also have till June 1, to add the one-click unsubscribe to all commercial and promotional emails. Further, users with more than 0.3 percent spam rate will not be eligible for mitigation of their status.

Google Launches New AI-Backed Ad Features That Auto Locates Best Ad Placements, More

Alphabet‘s Google said on Wednesday it is launching two new artificial intelligence-powered features for advertisers that will automatically find the best ad placements for brands across the tech company’s services.

AI has dominated the tech industry in recent months as Google and other companies have developed novel chatbots that can respond to users in open-ended conversations. AI is also being increasingly deployed to serve advertisers, who contribute to the companies’ revenue.

While Google has previously introduced AI tools for advertisers, it is now using the technology to help brands achieve more specific goals for their ads.

One of the new features called Demand Gen will use AI to place an advertiser’s photo and video ads across several products such as Gmail, the YouTube feed and Shorts, which is YouTube’s competitor to popular short-form video app TikTok.

AI will remove the need for advertisers to think about where they should place their ads, and the technology will focus on finding placements that are “shiny, visual and immersive,” said Vidhya Srinivasan, Google vice president and general manager of advertising.

The second new feature will use AI to find the best ad placements with the goal of maximizing views of a brand’s video ads, Google said.

Early testing shows that brands received on average 40 percent more video views with the new tool, Srinivasan said.

By using AI to remove some of the “grunt work” for advertisers, brands will be able to focus more on their marketing strategy and storytelling, she added.

Google I/O: From Gmail to Maps, Here’s How Google Is Infusing Its Most Popular Products With AI

Google I/O 2023 began on Wednesday as Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai took to the stage to reveal several new changes coming to the company’s apps and services. Google’s annual developer conference for 2023 is focussed on artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the firm announced several new AI-powered features that are coming to services like search, Google Maps, Google Photos, and Gmail. Some of these features will be rolled out to customers in the coming weeks, while some will only be available later this year, Google said, while reiterating its “bold and responsible” approach to updating its products.

The first product from Google that is set to get an AI-backed upgrade is Gmail, the company announced during the Google I/O keynote. The company says it is expanding on its Smart Reply and Smart Compose features, which also rely on AI, into a new tool called “Help me write” that will roll out to Google Workspace users in the coming weeks.

Users can type in a prompt of an email they want to compose, and the tool will use a powerful generative model to quickly pull data from their Google account to generate a personalised email. These drafts can also be refined by the user, or automatically expanded using an “Elaborate” option. These features will start to roll out as part of Workspace updates, according to Google.

Google Photos, first introduced at Google I/O in 2015, has received several AI-powered features over the years that allow users to search for specific objects or people in their photo library. The company also offers a Magic Eraser tool on its Pixel smartphones, allowing users to remove people and objects from photos using AI — users on non-Pixel smartphones can also use this tool, with a Google One subscription.

A new Magic Editor tool for Google Photos was unveiled on Wednesday, and the company claims it can add missing details in images where objects are partially visible, move subjects in an image after it has been captured, and maintain a consistent look across the image while editing a particular section. Google says Magic Editor for Google Photos will arrive later in 2023.

The company is also adding more AI capabilities to Google Maps, with a new “Immersive View for routes” feature that can give users who are walking, cycling, or driving, a bird’s eye view of the route, along with details of the traffic, air quality, weather, and visual indications of how these might change throughout the day. Google Maps’ new Immersive View for routes will be available in 15 cities — including London, New York, Tokyo, and San Francisco — by the end of the year.

Google’s search app is also getting an upgrade, as is the desktop browser search experience. The company has been scrambling to compete with Microsoft’s upgraded Bing, which runs on OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology. Using Google Bard, the search giant will offer users a conversational AI experience, that has now been opened to all users without a waitlist. The new Google search with generative AI can be enabled via a Labs setting and users can join a waitlist to test all the features offered by Bard-powered Google search, such as smarter shopping and follow up questions.

Smartphone companies have launched many compelling devices over the first quarter of 2023. What are some of the best phones launched in 2023 you can buy today? Google’s Russian Subsidiary Reportedly Submits Bankruptcy Declaration

The Russian subsidiary of Alphabet’s Google has submitted a declaration of bankruptcy, Interfax reported on Friday, citing court filings online.

The subsidiary announced plans to file for bankruptcy in May after authorities seized its bank account, making it impossible to pay staff and vendors.

“The Russian authorities’ seizure of Google Russia’s bank account has made it untenable for our Russia office to function … Therefore, Google Russia has filed for bankruptcy,” a company spokesperson said.

“People in Russia rely on our services… and we’ll continue to keep free services such as Search, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Android, and Play available.”

Russia has restricted access to Twitter and Meta‘s flagship social networks, Facebook and Instagram.

Google and its YouTube video hosting service, though under pressure, remain available for now. Moscow in particular objects to YouTube’s treatment of Russian media, which it has blocked.

But Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma committee on information policy, said the U.S. company was not yet at risk of being blocked.
