Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas’ on PBS, The Great British Baker’s Perfect Plan For a Celebratory Holiday Spread

She’s long been famous in Britain as a writer and cookbook author, but Mary Berry broke into international renown with the transatlantic appeal of The Great British Baking Show. While she served as a tough-but-fair judge on the long-running competition, she’s the one making the food on Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas, a new holiday special streaming on PBS. Over the course of the hour-long special, Berry prepares a multi-course holiday meal, from pre-dinner canapes on to desserts.

Opening Shot: Mary Berry sits in a tastefully-appointed living room near a roaring fire, consulting a notebook full of ideas. She’s planning out a delicious multi-course Christmas dinner, and you’re going to get to see all of it come together.

The Gist: Christmas is coming, and Mary Berry has advice for the perfect holiday menu and how to make it. Over the course of this hour-long special, Berry makes miniature scones, handmade pasta, a Christmas pudding, a succulent roast turkey, stuffing, vegetables and dessert. The dishes naturally trend toward British traditions, but they’re so expertly made even the most American viewers will be salivating.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Strong Barefoot Contessa vibes are on display here; unapologetically fancy food made by an upper-crust entertaining expert who still makes the hoi polloi like you feel at home.

Our Take: If you’re like millions of other viewers here in the States, you’ve become aware of Mary Berry as the stern backbone of The Great British Baking Show. For the first seven seasons of the wildly-popular baking competition, Berry served as one half of the judging panel, a grandmotherly contrast to the brash bullishness of Paul Hollywood. She was the judge you desperately wanted to please; the judge you didn’t want to disappoint.

On Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas, a new standalone hour-long holiday special airing through PBS and PBS streaming here in the States, Berry’s putting her own food on the line, and demonstrating exactly how she earned the right to judge so many technical challenges past. She’s cooking a full Christmas dinner, starting with miniature scone canapes, and progressing through a handmade pasta course, a roast turkey and potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, a rich boiled pudding flambeed with brandy, and a decadent sherry-soaked truffle. It’s a menu that’s at once glamorous and homey, showstopping and accessible; these are the kind of things a mildly-ambitious home chef might just find themselves taking on in a few days.

The special has a lovely flow, and the production is as understated as you’d expect of a British show airing through American public television; there’s none of the bombast or silliness of many American-born food shows here, just a lovely menu coming together in a smart, careful and skilled manner. Berry structures the show the way that you’d prepare the courses at home–preparing the dishes that can be prepared ahead first, and progressing to the carefully-timed choreography of the big day. She’s got a plan, a timetable, and a clear picture of how it’s all going to come together, and this is hugely instructive if you want to take on such an endeavor yourself; making a meal like this is possible, you just have to plan ahead.

Berry handles this all with the understated, dignified charm longtime viewers of GBBS will find utterly familiar. In one scene, she convinces an avowed fussy eater who professes not to like Brussels sprouts to try hers, and he’s won over as a convert after tasting her shallot-tinged dish. Mary Berry can convince you to eat your vegetables, and not just because you’re not getting any of that delicious pudding if you don’t.

Sex and Skin: Sorry to disappoint you, but the only sensuality on display here is the buttery scones.

Parting Shot: Mary and her friends–including some of the chefs she’s collaborated with on delicious dishes throughout the special–sit down around the dining table for a warm, celebratory Christmas meal, and raise a cheerful toast; you’ll find yourself wishing you were there, too.

Sleeper Star: For the first course, Mary meets with a friend of Italian heritage who helps her make handmade tortelli that look absolutely spectacular, and even Mary’s in awe of the skill with which the filled pastas are quickly and expertly made.

Most Pilot-y Line: “Opening this bottle here just makes you think of Christmas,” Berry effuses, taking a whiff of a fragrant spice mixture as she pulls together the ingredients for a sweet Christmas pudding. Later, after trying Berry’s potatoes, twice-roasted in goose fat, a friend exclaims “this truly is the miracle of Christmas!”

Our Call: STREAM IT. If you’re pulling together a holiday meal soon, you’re going to need all the help you can get, and Mary Berry’s among the best teachers you can find.

‘Stranger Things’ star Noah Schnapp is ‘brutally bummed’ out by Nutella

Noah Schnapp isn’t nutty about Nutella.

The “Stranger Things” star – who created TBH (To Be Honest), a vegan alternative for the beloved hazelnut cocoa spread – told Page Six exclusively via email that he was “shocked and brutally bummed out” when he discovered the product’s ingredients.

“Hazelnuts aren’t the main ingredient, and the amount of sugar alone made me realize I wasn’t doing myself any favors,” Schnapp, 18, said.

The New York-born actor also noted that Nutella uses palm oil, which “is responsible for mass deforestation,” something he “couldn’t support.”

Indeed, Nutella’s main ingredient is sugar.

“Based on the Nutella nutrition label that states each two-tablespoon serving has 21 grams of sugar, there are approximately 210 grams of sugar in a 13-ounce jar of Nutella. That’s more than quadruple the sugar in a 16-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola,” reports mic.com, with registered dietitian Caroline Passerrello adding, “By weight, Nutella is 55% sugar.”

Additionally, palm oil is a “major driver of deforestation…destroying the habitats of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino,” reports the WWF.

To continue encouraging people to give up Nutella, Schnapp has launched a crowdfunding campaign for tbh, and is asking others to invest as little as $50 through Republic, a fintech company that he co-founded.

“I believe value-aligned investing is more important than focusing only on sustainability because I really believe we can vote with our dollars,” he explained, noting that not all of Republic’s investments are environmentally based, as he loves “social networks and gaming and other things.”

Schnapp is also learning about investment at the University of Pennsylvania, the Wharton School of Business, majoring in entrepreneurship. He told us he can “definitely” see himself “launching a venture capital fund in the next year.”

And as for his side hustle, playing Will Byers in the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” Schnapp is proud that his character is gay.

Schnapp shared a goofy selfie from the set of “Stranger Things.”

“Will’s character arc started in Season 1, and with each new season, we’ve peeled back another layer of who he is and part of that is his sexuality,” he explained. “Will has always struggled with who he is and figuring out how to fit in, which is something many people can relate to.”

He continued, “I’ve had a lot of fans express how much they can relate to Will and his journey, which makes me very happy to hear. It has made me so proud that we’re writing this very real character that makes our viewers feel seen.”

Paul and Prue Saved the Wrong ‘The Great British Baking Show’ “Mexican Week” Baker

The Great British Baking Show “Mexican Week” was full of controversies. There was Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas‘s tone deaf cold open, Paul Hollywood‘s idea to put refried beans on tacos, and the way sweet Carole Edwards pronounced “pico de gallio.” However, these “Mexican Week” specific issues have come to overshadow a more classic Bake Off fracas. Once again, we must ask ourselves if the wrong bakers went home this week. Spoilers, but did Rebs Lightbody and James Dewar both deserve to get the boot while Carole got the gift of staying in the Bake Off tent for another day? Or did Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith get the “Mexican Week” double elimination wrong?

Last week, both Rebs Lightbody and Abdul Rehman Sharif missed The Great British Baking Show “Bread Week” because they were under the weather. In a fit of mercy, Paul and Prue decided to spare any of the eight present bakers from elimination. However they did warn everyone that because no one went home last week, a double elimination would be on the horizon. As it happens, this week, Paul and Prue discovered there were three bakers whose poor performances put them in line for going home: James, Rebs, and Carole. They gave James and Rebs the axe…but was that the right decision? I don’t think so! I think Carole and not James should have been eliminated.

The best part of watching The Great British Baking Show is watching these darling bakers create decadent desserts against the clock. The worst part is we never get to taste any of the creations. We merely have to trust Paul and Prue’s opinion on the texture, flavors, and overall quality of the bakes. Going off Paul and Prue’s comments — coupled with the producers choices in the editing booth — it’s often obvious which bakers are doing well and which are in dire trouble.

Photo: Netflix

“Mexican Week” was a rough one for the Great British Baking Show bakers. Most everyone except Maxy and Kevin fumbled a bit during the pan dulce Signature Challenge. Carole came in last during the taco Technical, with Rebs in ninth place, and James in eighth. During the tres leches cake Showstopper Challenge, Dawn rallied enough to save her skin, but James, Carole, and Rebs once again struggled. But the trio struggled in different ways.

James understood that he was in trouble, so the creative Scot took it upon himself to be incredibly ambitious during his Showstopper. Instead of just attempting a layered tres leches cake, he added a fraisier tart as the top tier and a white chocolate collar. As Paul later said, James attempted too much and the final result was not neat. Paul and Prue loved the flavor of the fraisier tart and the bottom sponge, but Prue felt it was unevenly soaked. Paul liked the flavor, but again called it messy.

While James attempted too much and came up short in his decorations, Rebs’s Showstopper was a leaky mess and didn’t taste good. Apparently she went overboard on the flavors to Paul and Prue’s chagrin. Carole, who was struggling Day 1, had a nice looking cake, but there were definitely flavors. Lady put two bird’s eye chilis into her chocolate ganache, rendering it way too hot for Paul’s liking. Prue defended the cake even though she noted it wasn’t soaked at all in her piece.

So when James, Rebs, and Carole were named as the bottom three bakers during deliberations, I wasn’t surprised. In fact, Rebs had been in the bottom every week she was in the tent and Carole was in danger last week. What did surprise me was that James and Rebs were the ones chosen to go home. I personally thought — and don’t hate me, Carole! — it should have been Rebs and Carole.

Rebs’s time in the tent was definitely up, but it was a bit tighter between James and Carole. Because Carole not only came in dead last in the Technical, but because she also fumbled on flavor on one of the more simple bakes, I would have given the edge to James. I think when it comes down to it, taste should matter more than decor, and the Technical should be used for “tie” breaking.

Alas, that is not what Paul and Prue thought. They decided James would go home and, to James’s credit, he took the news like a champ. Rebs blubbered and Prue had to remind her it was just cake, but James was cracking self-depricating jokes to the camera about his performance. James will endure! I only wish that James had endured longer in The Great British Baking Show tent.

McDonald’s finally brings hit twist on classic Big Mac to the US

“We’re always looking to give our fans more ways to enjoy the classic menu items they know and love,” McDonald’s said of the addition of the new Big Mac, according to Fox 6.

The sandwich will include two tempura chicken patties, pickles, shredded lettuce, and American cheese, a combination the company said was a huge success when it was rolled out to customers in the U.K.

The Chicken Big Mac comes amid a fast food feud that has been dubbed the “Chicken Sandwich Wars,” which have intensified since Popeyes introduced its popular chicken sandwich in 2019. Other chains have followed the trend, with McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s introducing new sandwiches meant to compete with Popeyes and Chick-fil-A.

“Chicken continues to be a significant opportunity for us… We’ve got some great global equities already in our McNuggets and with McChicken, but we also have some equities in McCrispy and McSpicy that we think we’ve got an opportunity to do more with globally. So that’s going to be a priority area,” McDonald’s CEO Chris  Kempczinski said in a Q2 earnings call.

The new sandwich will be rolled out later this month for a limited time at select Miami locations.

Domino’s Pizza exits Italy as American pies fall flat

Domino’s is reportedly shutting down in Italy after locals failed to acquire a taste for its American-style pies.

Domino’s has now shuttered all 29 of its local stores in the country after entering in 2015 through a franchising agreement with local operator ePizza SpA, the report said.

The Michigan-based chain originally planned to open 880 stores in Italy, betting that Italians would embrace its delivery services.

Instead, Domino’s encountered tough competition from Italian pizzerias and restaurants that found success by bolstering their own delivery efforts or striking partnerships with outside food delivery firms.

“We attribute the issue to the significantly increased level of competition in the food delivery market with both organized chains and ‘mom & pop’ restaurants delivering food, to service and restaurants reopening post pandemic and consumers out and about with revenge spending,” ePizza said in an investor report alongside its fourth-quarter results last year, according to Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, Domino’s local operations encountered financial trouble during the planned expansion. The company had an outstanding debt of $10.8 million as of the end of 2020 and obtained a temporary reprieve from its creditors through an Italian court order in April – but the protection expired on July 1.

Current Domino’s Pizza CEO Richard Ellison acknowledged the difficulty of breaking into the Italian market in 2015, when he was serving as president of Domino’s international operations.

US-based representatives for Domino’s did not immediately return a request for comment. Representatives for ePizza did not return Bloomberg’s request for comment.

“No major American pizza brand has successfully entered the market,” Allison said at the time, according to MarketWatch. “We’re going where no major pizza brand has gone before.”

Alessandro Lazzaroni, the Italian entrepreneur who headed up local operations, pledged to keep the product familiar to locals while adding a Domino’s spin.

“We’ve created our own recipe, starting from the original pizza recipe, with Italian products, like 100% tomato sauce and mozzarella, and products like prosciutto di Parma, gorgonzola, grana padano and mozzarella di bufala campana,” Lazzaroni said in a statement in 2015.

Domino’s had previously ceased delivery operations on its website in Italy as of July 29, according to Bloomberg.

Some locals took the news hard, taking to social media to gripe about the shutdowns and complain that their local stores had shuttered, according to the outlet.

Glorious summer-themed cakes for your nuptials inspired by Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s floral wedding cake

Newlyweds Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor may have opted for a summer wedding in April when the temperatures are soaring in Mumbai. But their light and sunny décor in tones of soothing white and glimmering gold did them justice. So, it comes as no wonder that the duo ditched a decadent and dense chocolate cake and instead opted for a light and summery wedding cake in sunshine tones. The lovebirds were spotted cutting their lemon-hued, three-tier cake as they paved their way into marital bliss.

Right from the airy cream frosting to the offbeat flower motifs; their choice of confection was as mouth-watering as it was elegant. Should you be dreaming of your own nuptials, you may wish to explore some of these summer-themed cakes to add a splash of sunshine to your ceremony.

Coconut and Lemon Ice Cream Cake

When your guests are dressed in their festive best for your nuptials, you might imagine that the rich silks and finery they wear do them no favors when it comes to beating the heat. So, if a summer wedding is what you have your heart set on, then ask your baker to whip up a glorious ice cream cake. A lemon and coconut ice cream cake is ideal as it introduces tropical flavors that shall soothe your soul on a warm summer day. As coconut cream and lemon zest pair well together, this confection will be a huge hit!

A Citrusy Layered 4-tier Cake

Whether you prefer a tang of sour in your fruit or dense cloying sweetness, there is no debate about the fact that you need a cake that refreshes your tastebuds during the warmer months. So, opt for a citrus confection with lots of cream cheese frosting and opt to skip any use of fondant. Your guests will adore the tangy notes and thank you.

Moist Blueberry Chiffon Cake

If you are averse to lemon, berries are a great way to add a hint of sour to your confection so that the tart flavor is balanced against the sweetness of the cream and frosting. A Blueberry Chiffon Cake is incredibly fluffy and airy, which makes it a delight for guests. As this would be drizzled with a mildly sweet but sharp blueberry glaze, it shall induce a fruity flavor on your tongue that will leave you wanting more!

If you wish to tone down the use of fondant and frosting even further, you can always opt for a moist naked cake that is bedecked with edible blooms for your big day.
