Google Pixel Watch 2 Tipped to Get Inbuilt Thermometer, Safety Updates: All Details

Google Pixel Watch 2 is scheduled to launch on October 4 at the Made by Google event alongside the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Previous leaks have suggested some key specifications and colour options that the smartwatch could be introduced in. A new report suggests that the upcoming smart wearable device will come with some significant upgrades including features that were seen on the Fitbit Sense 2. Alongside safety upgrades, the watch is also expected to come with an inbuilt thermometer.

Pixel Watch 2, expected to succeed the Pixel Watch, will reportedly offer features like an upgraded electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor that tracks and allows users to monitor their stress levels. A 9to5Google report suggests that the upcoming watch will be launching with this improved sensor and help users regulate their stress levels.

The report further adds that just like the Fitbit Sense 2, the Pixel Watch 2 is likely to come with an additional skin temperature sensor, which is expected to work like a thermometer and help users track their body temperature. However, the Fitbit Sense 2 only monitors skin temperature during night time.

As per the report, the temperature sensor can not only be used for thermometer reading but also for tracking a user’s menstrual cycles. Notably, the Pixel 8 Pro, to be unveiled at the same event as the Pixel Watch 2, is also likely to ship with an inbuilt temperature sensor as per another report.

The Pixel Watch 2 could be offered in Silver/White, Silver/Bay, Gold/Hazel, and Black/Obsidian colour options. The models of the smartwatch are expected to have LTE and Wi-Fi variants. It is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 series chipset. The Pixel Watch 2 could come with a Snapdragon W5 or Snapdragon W5+ SoC.

Fitbit Sense 2, Fitbit Versa 4 Smartwatches Gain Support for Google Maps on Android: Report

Fitbit Sense 2 and Fitbit Versa 4 smartwatches are reportedly getting support for Google Maps, nearly a month after it was announced by Google. Support for the company’s widely used navigation service is now rolling out for Android users, while Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4 owners who have paired the smartwatches to an iPhone will have to wait until 2023 for Google Maps support. The company previously added support for the Google Wallet app on Fitbit watches last month.

According to a report by 9to5Google, Google Maps app support is available for download on both Fitbit smartwatches from the official app, as long as you have an Android phone. The Google Maps app on the Fitbit Sense 2 and Fitbit Versa 4 smartwatches seem to be very basic.

However, the integration is not working as advertised, according to the report. The “Current trip” reportedly does not appear at the top of the Fitbit watch app. Also, users only have access to Auto-start settings. They can enable or disable it for driving, walking, and cycling. You can already access these features on the Fitbit companion app, which means Google still has to enable the step-by-step navigation for these smartwatches.

Users will be required to start navigation on their Android phone while it is connected to the Fitbit Sense 2 or Fitbit Versa 4 via Bluetooth. This means the app requires a constant Bluetooth connection to function on both Fitbit smartwatches.

To download Google Maps on your Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4 smartwatches, you will be required to go to the device settings tab in the Fitbit app and click on the new Google Maps icon. Once downloaded, grant the necessary permissions after you open it via the app list.

Last month, the Fitbit Sense 2 and Fitbit Versa 4 received a new software update that brought new features like handling on-wrist incoming phone calls from the paired smartphone, and the ability to turn off the screen with a hand gesture.

Google Pixel Watch to Offer 24 Hours Battery Life, Tips Fitbit App APK Teardown

Google Pixel Watch was unveiled during the I/O 2022 event in May as the first smartwatch offering from the company, alongside the Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel 6a. It runs on the Wear OS platform and comes with Fitbit integration for tracking various physical activities. The Google Pixel Watch will be available in the US starting this fall and ahead of the launch, the Fitbit app is reportedly readying support for the wearable. The recent APK (Android Package Kit) teardown of the app indicates new in-app text related to evening charge reminders giving hints at the estimated battery life of the smartwatch.

The estimated battery life of Google Pixel Watch was suggested by 9to5Google via an APK teardown while examining the latest v3.65 of the Fitbit app. The app could be used to manage the wearable. As per the report, the APK teardown of the app includes new in-app text related to evening charge reminders for the Google Pixel Watch. When this upcoming toggle is enabled, Fitbit will send a notification reminding users to charge their smartwatch.

Fitbit app generally recommends charging the device at least 30 percent before going to bed for ensuring efficient sleep tracking. Assuming that Google is considering a full night’s sleep on 8 hours, the report suggests that the smartwatch could offer a battery life of somewhere around 24 hours. These are in line with the past reports that claimed that the Google Pixel Watch has a capacity of about 300mAh battery that delivers up to a day’s runtime on a single charge.

In May this year, Google introduced the Pixel Watch at I/O 2022 event. It will run the latest version of Wear OS and features a circular display with minimal bezels and curved glass protection. The smartwatch has a stainless-steel build. The wearable supports Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Wallet. It can be used as a remote for compatible smart home devices using the Home app for Wear OS.

Google has also packed customisable, swappable wristbands on the Pixel Watch. It will offer heart rate tracking and sleep monitoring as well. The Pixel Watch will work with the Find My Device app as well to help users locate their misplaced Pixel phone, earbuds, or any other supported devices.

Apple Continues to Lead as Global Smartwatch Market Grows 13 Percent YoY in Q1 2022: Report

Apple retained its top spot buoyed by the late launch of Apple Watch 7 as the global smartwatch shipments recorded a 13 percent growth on year-over-year (YoY) basis in Q1 2022 despite concerns over economic slowdown and inflation, as per a report. Samsung solidified its second position with the popularity of Galaxy Watch 4 series. Huawei, Xiaomi, and Garmin completed the top 5 list with Xiaomi performing well with its record-highest quarterly shipments registering a 69 percent YoY growth in the quarter.

As per the Global Smartwatch Model Tracker by Counterpoint Research, Apple maintained a solid lead and registered a 14 percent YoY increase in Q1 2022. Due to delayed launch of Apple Watch 7, some shipments carried over to Q1 2022 helping the iPhone-maker to retain its top spot globally with 36.1 percent market share.

“Although the global smartwatch market saw little growth in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19, it has continued to perform well since its rebound last year. In particular, Apple accounted for more than a third of the total shipments last year, and it is further increasing its influence with a market share of 36 percent in the first quarter of this year,” said Associate Director Sujeong Lim.

The second place went to Samsung, which registered a 46 percent YoY increase in shipments due to its growth in the APAC region steered by the popularity of Galaxy Watch 4 series. The South Korean giant grabbed 10.1 percent of the global market share. In third place Huawei’s growth remained flat YoY (7.2 percent share) in terms of shipments due to its weak position in the international market.

Another Chinese brand, Xiaomi, registered the maximum (69 percent) YoY growth with its increased penetration in the international markets. The report says that Xiaomi’s sales rode on the sales of low-end segment wearables (under $100, or roughly Rs. 7,800), and grabbed 5 percent market share.

The Counterpoint report also says that Garmin (4.3 percent share) ranked fifth in terms of shipments, but was third in terms of revenues due to its higher ASP. “It occupies the majority portion in the premium segment over $500 (roughly Rs. 38,850),” the report noted. It is followed by Amazfit (4 percent) which rode the success of the GTR 3 and GTS 3 series launched in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Another player is FitBit which saw its sales decrease. It merged with Google, and appears to be undergoing an internal reorganisation. There were no models released last year, and the transition to Wear OS was also delayed. It captured 2.7 percent of market share.

The Counterpoint report says that most major regions grew YoY, but Europe recorded a flat growth.. “We initially expected the war between Russia and Ukraine to have minimal impact on the market in Q1, but the prolongation of the conflict and the resulting logistical constraints have begun to affect the European region. The impact of the war will become more serious in Q2,” Lim added.
