Darius Slayton could trigger multiple contract incentives in Week 18

The New York Giants may be 5-11 and appear to have little to play for, but nothing could be further from the truth.

One player can cash in big simply by catching a few passes this Sunday in the Giants’ season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium.

Wide Darius Slayton was signed to a two-year, $12 million contract this past March, an agreement that was laden with incentive bonuses. As the 2023 season gets ready to sunset, several of those incentives are close to being achieved and could add up to a total of $2.5 million.

From Dan Duggan of The Athletic:

He’s (Slayton) is on the verge of reaching incentives in receptions and receiving yards.

Slayton will earn $100,000 if he finishes with 50-59 catches, so he’s five catches shy of that mark. He’ll also earn $100,000 if he finishes with 750-874 yards, so he’s 42 yards away from that mark. Slayton is averaging 2.8 catches and 44.3 yards per game this season.

Slayton’s contract includes an escalator, so any incentives he earns this year will increase his 2024 roster bonus by the same amount. If Slayton earns $200,000 in incentives this season, his bonus for being on the 90-man roster on the fifth day of the 2024 league year will increase from $2.4 million to $2.6 million.

Several other players, such as running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Darren Waller, had incentive-laden contracts as well but did not reach the milestones to earn them.

Barkley’s bonuses were based around the Giants qualifying for the postseason and Waller’s were reliant on him being elected to the Pro Bowl. Neither happened.

Potential must-plays from Giants-Eagles game

The New York Giants (5-11) host the Philadelphia Eagles (11-5) this Sunday at MetLife Stadium in the 2023 regular season finale.

The Eagles, depending on the day’s outcome, will either be the NFC East champion or the 5th overall seed in the NFC Playoffs.

The Giants have been eliminated from postseason play for several weeks now.

The teams met just two weeks ago and put up 58 points (Philadelphia won, 33-25), so there is a chance this could be another high-scoring affair.

Here are three fantasy plays for you to consider.

Caveat Emptor: There is a possibility that some key players may sit on both sides, so please check the inactives on Sunday to make sure your choices are playing.

Giants defense

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Sure, the Eagles have owned the Giants over the past decade and have averaged 35 points per game during their current five-game winning streak against Big Blue.

But in fantasy football, points allowed aren’t everything. The Giants have been one of the NFL’s top teams when it comes to takeaways (they are +9 on the season) and the Eagles have been losing the turnover battle the last four weeks (8 giveaways, 3 takeaways for a -5 differential).

The Giants also scored on special teams last week on a 94-yard punt return and have three defensive touchdowns to their credit this season.  Last week, against the Rams, they had four sacks and could be heating up in that area as well.

Giants RB Saquon Barkley

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles were shredded by Arizona’s James Conner last week, who racked up 29.3 FPS on DraftKings in the Cardinals’ 35-31 win.

While Conner is a solid back, he is not Saquon Barkley. The Eagles look like a team that has peaked and are struggling to stop the run. In the seven games since their bye, Philly has been allowing 150 yards per game on the ground.

Two weeks ago, Barkley scored 19.4 FPS against the Eagles. He had a down week last week against the Rams, but this could be his last game as a Giant and he’ll want to make it count. The Eagles may not be able to stop him.

Giants WR Darius Slayton

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants — and Darius Slayton — want to end the season on a high note. Slayton has been hot, scoring 18.0 and 23.6 FPS in the last two games.

With Tyrod Taylor under center and taking more deep shots, I like Slayton against the Eagles defense, which has been dead last when it comes to defending wide receivers this season.

With rookie cornerback Deonte Banks (shoulder) out, Nick McCloud got the start.

Saquon Barkley went into the medical tent in the second quarter but returned the following possession.

Right tackle Tyre Phillips injured his left leg in the first series of the game and left the field to be evaluated. He was replaced by Matt Peart and returned on the Giants’ next possession. Phillips was knocked out of the game for good with a knee injury in the second half.

Safety Jason Pinnock limped off the field in the first quarter with an ankle injury and headed toward the locker room. Dane Belton came in for him. Pinnock was ruled out for the rest of the game in the second quarter.

Darius Slayton named the New York Giants’ best value contract

The New York Giants selected Darius Slayton in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Slayton is incredibly talented and athletic, but he’s been saddled by the Giants’ lackluster offense for five years. Like Daniel Jones, Slayton is on his third head coach in his short tenure with the team.

Still, Slayton has had an impact on the field. While not as consistent as most would like, he’s still capable of great things and occasionally we see glimpses of that. Because of this, Slayton was deemed to have the Giants’ best value contract by ESPN.

This one was hard, as the Giants’ most valuable veteran cap hits of 2023 belong to players whose cap hits jump in future years. For example, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II has a $5.7 million cap number this year, which is hugely valuable. Next year, that jumps to $22.1 million. Or take linebacker Bobby Okereke, tied for second in the NFL in defeats. Okereke has a cap number of just $4.4 million in 2023, but that jumps to $11.2 million next season and $12.2 million in 2025 and 2026.

We’ll give the best value contract award to Slayton’s two-year deal that covers 2023 and 2024. Slayton has an inconsistent career but is the most valuable wide receiver on the Giants. Last season, he ranked 16th among receivers in DVOA, catching 46 passes for 724 yards and two touchdowns. This season, his DVOA is below average, but he still leads the Giants in receiving yards with 435 yards through Week 12. He has played 78% of New York’s offensive snaps so far in 2023.

Slayton’s 2023 cap hit is $4.2 million (1.8% of the Giants’ total cap) and his 2024 cap hit is $7.75 million (3.0%). On a two-year deal for a solid wide receiver, this is a huge value.

As ESPN noted, Slayton ranked 16th among receivers in DVOA last season. This season is below average, but he still leads the Giants in receiving yards and has played 78% of the Giants’ offensive snaps in 2023.

Slayton is not flashy and he doesn’t demand attention, but he can get the job done, and that’s the value he brings.

Rookie defensive tackle Jordon Riley, playing in just his third NFL game due to the injury to Lawrence, left the game in the second quarter with a finger injury and returned in the second half.

Linebacker Micah McFadden came off the field with a left arm injury early in the third quarter and received medical attention. He returned shortly after.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton came off the field holding his right arm in the fourth quarter. He was listed with a neck injury this week and the two could be related.

Special teamer Carter Coughlin injured his hip and was ruled out in the fourth quarter.

New York Giants’ Dexter Lawrence, Darius Slayton doubtful vs. Patriots

The New York Giants will host the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium in Week 12 and could be down several additional key players.

Man games lost has been the major story for the Giants since 2009 as they lead the league in injuries over that span, and they will look to continue that string here in 2023.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, the team’s most dominant player, missed all three practices this week due to a hamstring injury and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Darius Slayton, the team’s leading receiver, is also listed as doubtful for the Patriots clash due to a neck injury that is causing some nerve-related issues.

“So, we’ll take both those guys right up to game time,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “Evan Neal will be out.”

New York Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence remains sidelined

The New York Giants held a brief practice on Thursday morning before players and staff were permitted to leave early and attend their respective Thanksgiving celebrations.

“We’ll bump it up a little bit,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Thursday’s practice. “I talked to the captains last week relative to how they wanted to approach the week, if they wanted to push it up and practice on Tuesday, give them off on Thursday.

“They wanted to keep it a normal week. So, we’ll push up the time that we start, and then they’ll get out a little bit earlier than they would. Fairly normal.”

East Rutherford facilities were closed to the media, so there were no press conferences or Zoom calls held, while practice was closed.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), OL Evan Neal (ankle)

Limited participant: WR Darius Slayton (neck), LB Bobby Okereke (rib/hip), DL A’Shawn Robinson (back), CB Tre Hawkins (shoulder)

Full participant: OL John Michael Schmitz (finger), RB Saquon Barkley (rest), LT Andrew Thomas (knee), RB Eric Gray (ankle), OL Tyre Phillips (knee), WR Sterling Shepard (hip), CB Adoree’ Jackson (concussion), S Bobby McCain (illness)

Potential must-plays from Giants-Seahawks Week 3 game

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Daniel Jones is a ‘fade’ if he has to go up against a league power such as Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco et al.

But is Seattle a league power? No. They are ‘playoff-caliber’ at best if everything breaks right for them. That means Jones should be considered here.

The Seahawks are ranked 27th out of 32 teams against quarterbacks over the first three games. Jones, when given time and allowed to throw deep, has shown some prowess. If the Giants go for broke in this game, he could pop.

New York Giants’ Darius Slayton says Mike Kafka is still calling plays

Who is calling plays for the New York Giants? Is it head coach Brian Daboll or is it offensive coordinator Mike Kafka?

That question arose after the team’s comeback victory against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 when their offense completely changed after halftime. Some argued that Daboll must have assumed the play-calling duties.

Despite the theories, Daboll insists that nothing changed and that Kafka was still calling the plays.

“Nope,” Daboll said bluntly when asked if he called plays in Week 2. “We always communicate like that. I always have a sheet with me. But Mike (Kafka) did a fantastic job. I communicate with Mike, I communicate with (Thomas McGaughey), I communicate with Wink (Martindale). So the offensive staff did a great job. Moved the ball, scored points. Did their job.”

Quarterback Daniel Jones also confirmed the plays were still coming in from Kafka but that hasn’t slowed the debate. Even as the Giants fell to the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, on Thursday night, the theories persisted.

On Friday, during an appearance on Up & Adams, wide receiver Darius Slayton was asked about the speculation and who is currently calling plays on offense.

“DJ’s got the mic in his helmet. I don’t know who’s talking to him but as far as I know, Kafka calls the plays and always has called the plays,” Slayton said. “To the extent of my knowledge, he’s still currently calling the plays.

“Obviously, you see the stuff people say and the rumors and all of that but, at the end of the day, to my knowledge, I know Kaf calls the plays.”

Daboll has said it, Jones has said and now Slayton is saying it, but people are still going to question who’s calling plays. Kafka will have the opportunity to address the rumors next week during his press conference.

New York Giants have a problem at wide receiver and it’s a good thing

The New York Giants have a number of options at slot receiver this season, a situation made even more competitive after two veterans logged in solid showings Friday night in Detroit.

Cole Beasley caught all four of his targets for a total of 33 yards and Jamison Crowder reeled in both of his for 32 yards.

The Giants signed each veteran this offseason as insurance after the receiver cupboard ran bare last season due to injuries, forcing the team to sign players off the street.

One of the players they brought in last fall was Isaiah Hodgins, who provided the Giants with a huge boost down the stretch as they drove toward the playoffs.

On Friday night, Hodgins — a prospective starter on the outside — caught one pass for 13 yards to remind everyone that he’s still very much in the plans.

Head coach Brian Daboll put Hodgins in for 18 snaps in the game, some early on and then again later in the game.

“I thought it was good for him,” Daboll said. “He was a practice squad player for a while there and came on with us late, so I thought it was good to get him some reps early on with Tyrod (Taylor).”

The Giants’ wide receiver room is a very crowded one this summer and when the music stops on August 29 for final cuts there won’t be enough chairs. Several will be going home, or at the least, to the practice squad.

Sterling Shepard is back, along with Darius Slayton and Hodgins. They, along with third-rounder Jalin Hyatt and free agent Parris Campbell, are all shoe-ins to make the roster.

That leaves perhaps three open spots on the 53-man roster. With Beasley and Crowder stepping up, that number could be reduced to just one. Several players will have two games to make their cases.

Heralded rookie Bryce Ford-Wheaton did not have an impressive debut, failing to reel in any of his three targets and dropping a sure reception that hit him squarely in the chest.

The ever-reliable David Sills V made the most of his time, catching two passes for 36 yards, including one for a 22-yard gain. Sills is a long shot to make the team. The 27-year-old has been with the Giants since 2019, either on the active roster or the practice squad.

Kalil Pimpleton continues to play well, catching both of his chances for a total of 15 yards. He can also contribute on special teams as a returner.

Jaydon Mickens had a six-yard reception in the game, but he appears to be headed to the practice squad (at best).

Collin Johnson, who missed all of 2022 with an Achilles injury, left the game with a knee issue. The 6-foot-6 former Texas standout had been having a solid camp.

As of Saturday, Daboll did not have an updated status on Johnson’s injury.
