New York Giants name Tommy DeVito starting QB vs. Green Bay Packers

The New York Giants will not carry their quarterback controversy deep into the week with head coach Brian Daboll announcing on Tuesday that Tommy DeVito would start in Week 14.

“I just thought Tommy earned it,” Daboll told reporters. “Played two good games.”

Daboll’s decision comes less than two weeks after he left open the possibility of Tyrod Taylor starting upon his return.

Taylor was designated to return off of injured reserve (IR) on Monday and returned to practice. Daboll said he took the news like a professional.

“Those conversations are never easy,” he said.

DeVito has started three games since taking over for Daniel Jones, who was lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL. Taylor was also on IR during that span, nursing a rib injury.

The rookie sensation, who has become a local hero, has gone 2-1 in his three starts. He’s completed 62.9 percent for 697 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions in five total games this season.

Taylor is expected to serve as DeVito’s backup against the Green Bay Packers.

New York Giants’ Darren Waller, Tyrod Taylor inching closer to returns

One of the biggest obstacles faced by the New York Giants this season has been injuries. The offensive line took a hit early in the season, leading to so many quarterback hits and sacks that the Giants are using a third-string, undrafted rookie free agent as the starter.

That’s not the only area of the field to be decimated by injuries, but it has had the biggest impact.

Two of the Giants’ missing pieces could return after the bye, though, and they are quarterback Tyrod Taylor and tight end Darren Waller.

“I’d say they’re getting better. We’ll see where they’re at. I haven’t talked to the medical guys yet, but they’ve been getting better,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Taylor and Waller on Monday.

Following his answer, Daboll was asked if they could return after the bye week, “We’ll see. Yeah, we’ll see.”

Taylor and Waller last suited up for the Giants on October 29 against the New York Jets. Waller was targeted twice, bringing in one reception for four yards before leaving with a hamstring injury.

Taylor lasted a little bit longer, completing four of seven attempted passes for eight yards, getting sacked twice, while rushing five times for 33 yards before leaving the game with a rib cage injury.

Presumably, Taylor will regain the starting quarterback position when he returns, but nothing has been announced. In fact, Daboll was quite mum on the quarterback situation, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

The Giants next face the Green Bay Packers on December 11.

Giants’ Brian Daboll balks when asked if he’d fire Wink Martindale

Prior to Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, FOX Sports insider Jay Glazer reported that the relationship between New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was in “a bad place.”

Glazer suggested that a mutual parting of ways could be on the horizon, possibly even before the regular season ends.

The report, which was not the first of its kind, came after an interaction between Daboll and Martindale went viral in Week 10.

Although both Daboll and Martindale dismissed their extended exchange as normal football conversation, something seemed off. And the oddities continued following a Week 11 win against the Washington Commanders when Daboll had safety Xavier McKinney, who engaged in a public spat with Martindale, break down the team.

Asked about Glazer’s report following a 10-7 victory over the Patriots on Sunday, Daboll scoffed and seemed to dismiss it outright, as did others throughout the organization, including a high-ranking official.

“I’d say the biggest argument that Wink and I have had is who has the last piece of pizza,” Daboll said. “I got a lot of respect for Wink. He’s done a good job. I’ll leave it at that.”

Daboll also presented Martindale with the game ball on Sunday, which felt optics-driven with rumors swirling.

Not satisfied with Daboll’s commentary, reporters continued to question Daboll about Glazer’s report during a Monday morning press conference. And this time around, the second-year head coach refused to rule out firing the veteran coordinator.

“I’m done with that,” Daboll said angrily. “I’m done with that. Yeah, I just met with Wink a little while ago. We had doughnuts.”

Asked point-blank if he could assure that Martindale would remain with the Giants, Daboll passed the buck.

“I addressed what I said last night and I’m going to leave it at what I said last night,” he said.

While Daboll did appear to dismiss Glazer’s report initially, his refusal to rule out a firing is more than enough to fuel the tabloids. A simple answer in this scenario is easy and Daboll wouldn’t take it — which is a common trait for the coach when it comes to repeat questions.

General manager Joe Schoen’s decision to play dumb won’t help the speculation, either.

“What was the report?” Schoen asked. “I didn’t realize he said he wasn’t going to make it through the year. I think Dabes just addressed that.

“There’s always going to be noise… I know what we think inside those four walls and that’s what matters. I’ve got a great relationship with Wink. I don’t know where some of this stuff comes from. I’ll yield to Dabes on what he said on that.”

Most will want to believe this is much ado about nothing and maybe it is. But maybe it’s not. Daboll and Schoen are generally transparent but sometimes they leave things open to interpretation. This is one of those times.

Giants remain committed to Evan Neal at right tackle: ‘He can play’

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen met with the media on Monday to address the open issues about his 4-8 football team.

One of the key areas of discussion, as always, was the offensive line which the Giants have been mixing and matching all season due to another unusually high spate of injuries.

Through the first 12 weeks of the season, the Giants have only one lineman who has started all 12 games — Ben Bredeson. He has played on 88 percent of the offensive snaps this season.

No one else is even close — John Michael Schmitz is next at 64 percent followed by Evan Neal (59), Justin Pugh (57) and Mark Glowinski (55).

All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas has only played only 32 percent of the snaps this year after missing seven games with a hamstring injury.

It’s the Giants’ other former first-round tackle, Neal, that has fans and pundits concerned, however. He has missed five games due to various injuries in 2023 and the second-year right tackle cannot seem to get any traction to take the next step in his professional career.

There is a question of whether Neal can play tackle at the NFL level. Schoen nixed the idea of moving Neal to guard.

“I went back and watched the Alabama stuff; the kid can play. We just got to get him to be more consistent,” Schoen told reporters. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Evan, he’s a hard worker. It’s killing him right now to be out there. He’s missing some valuable reps in year two, but as soon as he’s healthy, he’s scratching and clawing to get back. We are looking forward to getting him back there, but he knows there is some things he can do better and that’s what we expect from him.

“Evan got off to a really good camp, had a concussion, missed a couple of weeks, came back, and needs to play better. Evan needs to play better. He knows that. Look forward to getting him back here when he’s healthy, but I think he’d admit there’s some things that he can do better, and we look forward to him continuing to improve.”

Head coach Brian Daboll was asked if Neal, who missed his second straight game with an ankle injury, would play again this year.

“Do I know? Not for certain but I think he’s getting better so I’m hopeful,” Daboll said in his session on Monday before Schoen spoke. “This is stuff we’ll all talk about when he’s ready to play. I don’t think he’s ready to play quite yet but he’s getting there.”

In Neal’s absence, Tyre Phillips has taken most of the offensive snaps but has been largely inconsistent.

Does New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley have a future as a play-caller?

We all know what New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley can do on the playing field, but he could also have a future on the sidelines as a play-caller.

Last week in Washington, Barkley actively lobbied for the coaches to call a play-action utilizing tight end Daniel Bellinger. It worked and Barkley let everyone know whose idea it was.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll said he has a high level of trust with Barkley and is always open to ideas.

“I’d say really all of our players, but particularly Saquon,” Daboll told reporters. “He’s been a good player for us. There’s stuff you can see during the game, on the sideline or up in the box, but when the players see it when they’re out there on the field, as long as they’re giving you the correct information, that’s always helpful.

“So, whether it’s Saquon, or the quarterback, or a defensive player, I think that’s the job of the coaching staff, too, to have good communication with the players. Now, if they come off and say, ‘This is going to work’ or, ‘I’m open every play,’ and you go back to the tape and say, ‘It really didn’t happen that way,’ then. . . But Saquon’s got a good feel for it, absolutely.”

It will be interesting to see how much input Barkley will have on the gameplan going forward.

Giants’ Brian Daboll says Matt Barkley is ‘prepared’ if called upon

Tommy DeVito, an undrafted free agent rookie, is the current starting quarterback for the New York Giants. He wasn’t their first, or even second, choice, but he’s the starter now.

DeVito was the backup to the backup, which meant the Giants had to go find a new backup, which they did when they signed Matt Barkley to the practice squad before adding him to the active roster.

Barkley hasn’t recorded a stat in the NFL since 2020. He’s a career backup who’s played for eight different teams in nine seasons. He spent last season backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo, so it’s not as if he’s out of football shape. But is he ready for the field?

The Giants quarterbacks sit behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league, so the likelihood that Barkley gets in the game is high. And if he does, head coach Brian Daboll says he’ll be ready.

“Yeah, he’s prepared,” Daboll told reporters this week. “He stays here late; we’ll be with him as much as we have to. I think Shae (Tierney) and (Mike) Kafka do a good job with those guys. They spend a lot of time with them, you know. DeVito, obviously a young player, and Matt is new, so a lot of work in that area.”

The problem with this response is that Daboll is never going to say he’s not ready to the public. That’s something they would discuss privately, but it also doesn’t mean he’s lying. Barkley very likely is ready for the field, and as a nine-year veteran, his knowledge of the game can do nothing but help DeVito.

Barkley was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Since then, he has bounced around the league as a backup. His last recorded stats are from five games played for the Bills in 2020, where he threw for 197 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and was sacked once.

While the hope is that nothing happens to take DeVito out of the game, if that time should come, Barkley is truly ready to take the helm.

Giants’ Wink Martindale downplays viral interaction with Brian Daboll

There were a number of animated conversations on the New York Giants’ sidelines during last Sunday’s 49-17 blowout loss to the Cowboys in Dallas but one that had onlookers buzzing this week.

The one between defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll. The one that the television cameras caught a piece of where the optics were, well, concerning.

“I don’t even know. We talk a lot throughout the game. Probably going into half, kind of some things we wanted to get worked on, things we want to do, but I have conversations with all those guys,” Daboll told reporters about it after the game. “No different. Normal stuff during a game.”

Martindale’s defense has not performed up to snuff the past two games, allowing 30 points to the Raiders in Las Vegas and then the 49 in Dallas last Sunday. More importantly, they looked extremely disorganized and uncompetitive in the process, surrendering 640 yards to the Cowboys last week.

Martindale was asked on Thursday about the conversation with Daboll, which FOX Sports field reporter Tom Rinaldi reported began before halftime and continued as the two men came back on the field for the third quarter.

“Dabs said something to me after the game about that and he and I talk all the time, but in those two situations, I talked to him about what happened because one thing about our defense, we don’t give up a whole lot of big passing plays and I credit the secondary to that and Rome (defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson) and we gave up some big plays in the passing game, which you all saw,” Martindale said.

“So, I told him what happened on the coverages. That was it right before half. And then coming back out, he had just got done at that time talking to the trainers and we were talking about who wasn’t coming back for the third quarter during that time and that turned into whatever it turned into but there was nothing to it.”

That’s not the way it appeared, however, and now comes the speculation that Martindale could be on his way out as the Giants’ defense continues to decline.
