Amazon Prime Monthly, Quarterly Subscription Prices Hiked; Cost of Annual Plan Remains Unchanged: Report

Amazon Prime membership price in India has become more expensive for users who opt for monthly and quarterly plans. The price hike is not applicable to the annual subscription option. This means customers can continue to avail of the annual Prime membership at Rs. 1,499. However, the monthly and quarterly Amazon Prime membership prices have been increased by Rs. 120 and Rs. 140, respectively. The monthly subscription option for Amazon Prime has seen the highest price hike, and customers will now have to pay 67 percent more than the previous price.

According to details on Amazon’s support page (via MySmartPrice, an Amazon Prime membership in India now costs Rs. 299 for monthly subscribers whereas the quarterly subscription is priced at Rs. 599. These plans previously cost Rs. 179 and Rs. 459, respectively. This means that the monthly plan has been hiked by around 67 percent while the quarterly subscription plans have gone up by nearly 31 percent. The annual membership has not been hiked, which means it continues to be priced at Rs. 1,499.

It is worth noting that the benefits and perks of the subscription remain the same, regardless of the duration of the Amazon Prime subscription. Users will gain access to free one to two-day deliveries at eligible addresses, with no minimum order value required, along with access to Prime Video, Prime Music, and Prime Reading. In addition to these services, subscribers will also have exclusive access to top deals and 30-minute early access to Lightning Deals on the e-commerce site on a daily basis.

Amazon introduced its Prime membership in India in 2016, at an introductory price of Rs. 499 a year. It introduced a monthly subscription plan only in 2018.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime also offers a lower-priced Prime Lite membership. This plan is priced at Rs. 999 per year. The subscription offers benefits like free two-day delivery, no minimum order value for free standard deliveries, early access to “Lightning” deals, as well as Amazon’s “deals of the day”. Prime Lite subscribers can also access unlimited video content, similar to Amazon Prime. However, the content will be available in standard definition (SD) quality, and accompanied by ads. It can be streamed on two devices at a time, one of which must be a mobile phone, according to the company.

Apple, Google Warn Amazon Over Pornographic Content Accessible to Children on Kindle App

Apple and Alphabet have raised concerns with Amazon after learning that sexually explicit photographs could be accessed by children on the popular Kindle app and called on Amazon to strengthen its content moderation.

The warnings were sparked by questions posed by Reuters to spokespeople at the three companies about users’ ability, via the Kindle app, to access and view online volumes of photographs of naked women, with titles such as “75 hot fully nude photos of a young blonde” and “Real Erotica: Amateur Naked Girls – Vol. 4″. Some appeared to show women and men engaging in sexual acts.

The companies said their concerns were around policy violations but did not provide more details of how their rules were broken or about their warnings to Amazon.

Reuters learned of the issue when two families told Reuters their pre-teen sons downloaded the explicit material via Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited e-book subscription service and viewed the full-colour photographs on the Kindle iPhone app. Pornography also is available through Amazon’s Kindle online store and viewable on versions of the Kindle app.

The parents, who declined to be named, told Reuters they were initially attracted to the $10-per-month (roughly Rs. 820) service because it offered access to age-appropriate book series that would otherwise be expensive to purchase and were not available on Amazon’s Kids+ subscription service.

“We’re committed to providing a safe shopping and reading experience for our customers and their families and we take matters like this seriously,” said Amazon in a statement to Reuters. “We are reviewing all of the available information and are taking action based on our findings.”

Referring to Amazon, Apple said, “We’ve shared these concerns with the developer and are working with them to ensure their app is compliant with our guidelines.” Google in a statement said that “Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content and we’ve been in contact with the developer on this issue.”

Such exchanges are rare among tech companies which, while competitive, also rely on one another for a variety of services. The Kindle and Amazon apps are consistently among the most downloaded on Google’s and Apple’s app stores.

The adult material at issue is primarily self-published through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing arm. Authors can self-publish their books nearly instantaneously through Amazon and may designate the content as available for the Kindle Unlimited service. In Amazon’s terms for its self-publishing arm, it says it can refuse to sell content it deems “offensive or inappropriate,” which may include content that “contains pornography.”

Amazon is the world’s leading e-book distributor, controlling two-thirds or more of the market, according to some estimates. E-books can be viewed on black-and-white Kindle devices but also in full color on the Kindle mobile app.

Three internet law experts interviewed by Reuters said that Amazon was unlikely to face legal ramifications, given First Amendment protections.

Eric Goldman, a Santa Clara University law professor, said there’s a body of law that broadly protects distributors of pornography and other potentially objectionable materials even if it might end up in the hands of minors, comments that were echoed by the other two experts.

Age ratings and parental controls

After Reuters alerted Apple of the availability of pornography in the Kindle app, Amazon earlier this month changed the age rating in the app store to 12 years or older from 4 years or older. The app is rated “teen” on Alphabet’s Google Play store.

The companies can, at their discretion, remove an app from their app store for rules violations or other reasons. And Apple and Alphabet have in the past policed their app stores for disallowed adult material, including removing apps that displayed explicit content or ads.

There are no parental controls available for the Kindle Unlimited service.

The Apple app store’s guidelines “prohibit apps dedicated to portraying overtly sexual or pornographic material,” the company said in a statement. “App developers are responsible for moderating the user-generated content on their platforms, and we work with developers to take immediate corrective actions whenever we find any issues.”

Amazon said it was also updating the Kindle app, without offering specifics, and noted that its terms require parental involvement for users under 18.

Dinosaur and alien erotica

Kindle Unlimited, for $10 (roughly Rs. 820) per month, offers users a mix of self-published e-books and more traditional fare from publishing houses. The service has grown in popularity for customers seeking to binge read series like the “Hunger Games” trilogy and other prior bestsellers like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Queen’s Gambit.”

Kindle Unlimited also has spawned a cottage industry of self-published titles catering to a wide range of interests, including text-based erotica, with many thousands of titles in niche areas, including dinosaur and alien erotica. Pornographic content can be found on Amazon’s site without a subscription and purchased for as little as $2.99 (roughly Rs. 240).

Amazon generally allows authors to self-publish online without interference and will respond to credible complaints regarding copyright, content or other issues by removing the book, according to three people who have worked in the Kindle division. Amazon has software tools to help detect some disallowed content prior to publication.

The people said the Seattle tech company has stricter guardrails for its Amazon Kids+ service but noted that’s designed and marketed for children aged 3 to 12, leaving Kindle Unlimited as the lone subscription service option for customers seeking book content aimed at 13- to 17-year-olds.

As of Monday, adult materials were still accessible on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited via the iOS and Android apps.

Amazon Said to Be Facing FTC Complaint for Illegally Collected Kids’ Data

Federal regulators are expected to sue Amazon over allegations that the e-commerce giant illegally collected data on children, according to two people familiar with the case.

The Federal Trade Commission recommended filing a complaint that Amazon’s Alexa-powered speakers are collecting information about children under the age of 13 without parental consent in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss a pending case. The Justice Department could file on the FTC’s behalf as soon as next month.

A group of children’s advocacy organizations in 2019 asked the FTC to investigate whether Amazon’s smart speakers violated children’s privacy rights. The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood – now called Fairplay – and the Center for Digital Democracy, among other groups, alleged the company retained voice recordings indefinitely and, in some cases, held onto personal data even after users tried to delete it.

Amazon didn’t adequately verify that it had parental consent to collect data, and most of the applications on the Alexa voice assistant tailored to kids didn’t include a privacy policy at all, the complaint said.

Amazon sells a kids-focused edition of its Echo smart speaker and offers a subscription service that opens up a curated selection of apps, books and other content.

When the complaint was filed, the company said its Echo Dot Kids Edition and FreeTime, since rebranded Kids+, complied with COPPA.

Amazon and the FTC declined to comment.

The federal government can seek more than $50,000 (roughly Rs. 41,09,000) per alleged violation of the kid’s privacy law, which has led to significant fines in previous cases.

The FTC, which enforces both antitrust and consumer protection laws, has dinged Alphabet’s YouTube and Musical.ly, the precursor company to ByteDance’s TikTok, for children’s privacy violations. In December, the agency required closely held Epic Games, the maker of the popular Fortnite title, to pay a $275 million (roughly Rs. 2,300 crore) fine – the largest levy to date under the kids’ privacy law.

Speaking at a conference in Washington Friday, FTC Chair Lina Khan said the law “prohibits firms from conditioning access to certain services on endless collection of data.”

The law has “substantive limitations on when firms can be collecting data,” she said.

Politico earlier reported the FTC’s intent to pursue the case against Amazon.

US FTC Seeks Information on Cloud Computing Companies’ Business Practices

The Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday it is seeking information from the public on cloud computing companies’ business practices including details on their market power, competition and potential security issues.

The US cloud computing business is dominated by four providers that include Amazon.com, Microsoft, Alphabet‘s Google and Oracle. None of the companies immediately responded to a request for comment.

“Swathes of the economy now seem reliant on a small number of cloud computing providers,” said FTC Chair Lina Khan on Twitter. She added that the FTC “is seeking public input on how the current market structure and business practices of cloud providers affect competition and data security.”

The FTC and Justice Department under President Joe Biden have taken a strong stance against the perceived abuse of market power by challenging numerous mergers, cracking down on what it calls “junk fees”, and other actions aimed at giving consumers more say in the services they use.

Recently, regulators have started to focus on the cloud. Europe’s antitrust authority began probing Microsoft’s licensing agreements that discouraged rival cloud usage, prompting changes by the company in October that critics still called insufficient. Fees to take data out of various providers’ clouds have also drawn scrutiny from smaller players.

FTC staff are interested in the impact of cloud computing on industries including “healthcare, finance, transportation, e-commerce, and defense,” according to its press release.

The public will have until May 22 to submit a comment on the FTC “Request for information”.

The agency is asking for comments on which segments of the economy rely on a handful of cloud service providers, detail on contract negotiations, incentives to buy more services from a single provider, detail on services provided and information on notifications related to security.

The consumer protection agency noted it has targeted companies that failed to put in place security safeguards to protect data stored on third-party cloud computing services including one involving the alcohol delivery platform Drizly and another focused on education technology provider Chegg.

PS5 India Restock: PlayStation 5 Pre-Orders to Go Live on March 10

Sony is gearing up for a PS5 restock this month, and it’s a big one. The company confirmed that the next batch of pre-orders for the current-gen console is slated to go live on Friday, March 10, at 12pm. Pre-bookings are open across three options — the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, the bulky 4K Blu-ray drive-equipped disc variant, and a God of War Ragnarök bundle. PS5 restocks in India have been frequent recently, with February seeing two pre-order batches, and brick-and-mortar stores also showing promise when it comes to stock.

Indeed, the price hike from November is still in effect, with the PS5 Digital Edition now costing Rs. 44,990, while the standard variant is listed at Rs. 54,990. Meanwhile, the God of War Ragnarök bundle is priced at Rs. 59,390, which includes a digital code for the acclaimed video game. Late last month, Santa Monica Studio’s latest secured nine trophies at the 22nd Annual DICE Awards. A three-hour-long trial version of the game is also available to PS Plus Deluxe/ Premium subscribers at no extra cost. If you don’t own the game, the trial period should be enough to get a feel for the new mechanics. All progress and trophies get carried over to the full purchase, of course.

Back in January, at the CES 2023 event, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan had promised that gamers would have an “easier time” getting their hands on a PS5 since the pandemic era, which caused global chip and inventory supply shortages. Seeing the recent restocking and readily available units at stores, it seems his words hold true for the Indian market as well. For now, the pre-order banner and advertisements are up on the Sony Center website, Amazon India, GamestheShop, and e2z Store. Going by past restock events, the PS5s are expected to be up for pre-order on Croma, Flipkart, Gameloot, and Vijay Sales as well. As usual, be fully prepared to book your PS5 unit at 12pm, as these essentially function like a flash sale.

For now, the Sony Centre website lets you enter details to be notified when the PS5 pre-order goes live, while Gameloot has some pre-owned and repaired units for sale — all on a 1-month warranty. The former also continues with a warning for delays in their services, owing to curfews and lockdowns in select regions. No word on when these new PS5 pre-orders begin shipping, but once it starts, the units are expected to reach customers within 14 days.

Last month, Sony held a PlayStation State of Play event focused on Rocksteady Studios’ new Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and some PS VR2 games. Currently, there are no details from Sony India regarding a PS VR2 launch in the country. The company also showed off the new games coming to its PS Plus service in March, which include Battlefield 2042, Minecraft Dungeons, and Code Vein.

Apple Supplier Foxconn to Invest in Telangana for Electronics Manufacturing Facility

Apple supplier Foxconn will invest an undisclosed sum in India’s southern state of Telangana towards an electronics manufacturing facility in the south Indian state, the state’s chief minister said on Thursday.

The investment will create 100,000 jobs in the state, Telangana’s IT minister KT Rama Rao said. The announcement followed a meeting between Telangana’s chief minister and the chairman of Foxconn earlier in the day.

Taiwan-based Foxconn already has operations in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where it manufactures products for companies such as Apple and Amazon.com.

It was reported earlier last month that India’s southern state Karnataka is also in serious talks with Taiwan’s Foxconn over investment plans, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai confirmed, potentially setting it up as the Indian third state to host Foxconn.

“We are in serious discussion of investment plans with Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) at their Taiwan HQ & look forward to a fruitful collaboration,” Bommai said in a tweet. “We remain committed to welcome the best companies to the state & reap rewards for our people.”

The state’s investment promotion arm also tweeted that representatives held a meeting at the company’s Taiwan headquarters to discuss the investment, without providing further details.

Foxconn is said to be the world’s largest electronics manufacturer. As of last year, it ranks 20th in the Fortune Global 500.

Foxconn has 173 campuses and offices in 24 countries or regions around the world.

The primary product segments for the company include smart consumer electronics (smartphones, TVs, game consoles, among others), cloud and networking products (servers, communication networks), computing products (computers, tablets) and components and others (connectors, mechanical parts, services).

Meanwhile, a joint venture of Indian conglomerate Vedanta and electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn had in February finalised the Dholera Special Investment Region near Ahmedabad city of Gujarat for setting up their semiconductor and display manufacturing facility, a senior state government official said.

ONDC, Amazon’s SmartCommerce Services to Empower India’s Small Retailers, Buyers

Amazon has announced a partnership with India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on Friday, February 24. This teaming-up is aimed at providing small retailers and day-to-day buyers with Amazon’s SmartCommerce services. ONDC is a private non-profit company overseen by the government of India. Meanwhile, the SmartCommerce is an Amazon Web Services (AWS)-powered suite of software as a service (SaaS) product that enables MSMEs in India to build and scale their business.

This partnership marks Amazon’s first collaboration with the ONDC. The e-commerce giant will also provide its logistics service to small and medium business owners who aim to expand the sale of their products around the world.

“Amazon has a definite roadmap to being a part of the ONDC network and is taking its first step in coming in as the logistics partner in the ONDC network,” said T Koshy, MD & CEO of ONDC, in a prepared statement.

The partnership aims to make the engagement of Indian merchants with the e-commerce space smooth and seamless.

India, under its Make in India initiative, has been bullish on promoting homegrown brands around the world to compete with the likes of international labels across sectors.

Earlier this month, Narayan Rane, India’s minister of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), announced that the ministry would work alongside Amazon to enhance production in the country and take quality goods to the people at an affordable price.

“Amazon’s vision and commitment for India is closely aligned with ONDC’s objectives of digitally enabling small businesses and providing convenience and choice to customers across the country. We remain committed to be being a catalyst for India’s digitisation efforts throughout the economy,” said Manish Tiwary, Country Manager, India Consumer Business, Amazon India.

The e-commerce platform aims to digitise 10 million MSMEs by the year of 2025.

Back in January 2020, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos visited New Delhi to flag off the ‘Amazon Smbhav’ conclave.

At the time, Bezos had announced an investment of $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,300 crore) focussed on providing digital onboarding for Indian merchants.
