New York Giants signing Justin Pugh to practice squad

The New York Giants lost two more offensive linemen — John Michael Schmitz and Shane Lemieux — to injury in Week 4 and are in desperate need of reinforcements.

They will get that in the form of a familiar face.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that the Giants will sign Justin Pugh to their practice squad. This comes after a workout last week.

Pugh was selected by the Giants with the 19th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft out of Syracuse. He started 63 games over five seasons with Big Blue at both tackle and guard. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent and played in 57 games over five years for the Cards.

Pugh became a free agent again after last season.

The 6-foot-5, 311-pound Pugh played in just five games in 2022 after suffering a torn ACL in Week 6.

Expectations are that once up to speed, Pugh will be a practice squad elevation with the likelihood being that eventually signs to the 53-man roster.

Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

For the third time in four weeks, the New York Giants were completely humiliated in front of the football world on Monday night. This time, their beating came at the hands of Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks.

The Giants were dominated in every facet of the game and put on a display that not only rivals the embarrassment of the Joe Judge years but arguably surpasses it.

It may be hard to believe given how poorly run this organization has been over the past decade-plus, but it appears the Giants have found a new bottom.

Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ most recent defeat.

Offensive snaps: 75
Defensive snaps: 55
Special teams snaps: 23

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard continues to be an afterthought as he took just five snaps on Monday night. Curiously, the Giants didn’t even bother using him as a punt returner, instead risking cornerback Adoree’ Jackson once again.

Meanwhile, in his return to the field, linebacker Azeez Ojulari took 40 snaps and was relatively effective. He needs to work on finishing (missed a couple would be sacks) but was one of the team’s few bright spots.

New York Giants dominated by Seahawks, 24-3: Here’s how Twitter reacted

The New York Giants came into Monday Night Football hoping to improve to .500 on the season with a tough schedule ahead.

Instead, Big Blue looked completely unprepared and overmatched against the Seattle Seahawks in as close to a must-win game as you can get in Week 4 of the season.

The scoreboard was much closer than the game felt and the Giants fell to 1-3.

Here is how Twitter reacted:

The Giants were hoping the extra days between games allowed some of their injured players time to record. But Pro Bowl LT remains out and Saquon Barkley is as game-time decision that was not trending in the right direction Monday afternoon. They are 11-2-1 ATS in their last 14 after playing on a Thursday.

The Seahawks have reeled off consecutive wins after opening the season with a loss at home to the Rams. They have scored 37 points in back-to-back games, but have allowed 31 and 27. The Seahawks have won five of six in the series, including 27-13 in Week 8 last year in Seattle.

The Giants opened the week as 2-point favorites in the NFL odds at BetMGM.

New York Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux knows he’s underperforming

If the New York Giants are ever to regain their status as an NFL power, they are going to have to re-establish their pass rush.

Thus far — although not without trying — they have not been able to do that. This season, the Giants have recorded only two sacks with 16 pressures and have the lowest quarterback-hurry rate in the NFL (2.1 percent of dropbacks).

Last April, they selected Oregon edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux with the fifth overall selection in the NFL draft to address the problem. Through 17 games, Thibodeaux has just five sacks and has been more of a non-factor than a factor.

He knows it, too.

“I feel like I haven’t played up to the standard that I want to play at — whatsoever,” Thibodeaux told NJ Advance Media.

“I think I’m very multi-faceted. I feel like the Giants drafted me to be a utility guy, somebody that can do anything — whether it’s drop back in coverage, whether it’s rush the passer, whether it’s setting the edge [in run defense]. I’m happy just to fill whatever role that I need to when it’s game time.”

As many writers and reporters on this site (and others) have pointed out, Thibodeaux has several flaws. He overplays the run, attempts to bullrush much larger offensive linemen and gets himself slowed down, takes bad angles to the quarterback, and has had a difficult time code-switching between running plays and passing ones.

In a recent interview with Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media, Thibodeaux pretty much outlined his shortcomings and what he needs to do going forward.

“Playing the run, I want to be able to get off blocks,” he said. “I haven’t been able to get off blocks as much as I want to — and contribute back side. If they run the other way, I can’t let that neutralize my game. I’ve still got to be able to go make plays on the back side in pursuit.”

And in pass rush?

“I’ve got to start beating two guys,” he said. “If they’re going to seven-man protect — and they’re going to have a tight end or a running back chip [on my side] — I’ve got to be able to beat that [double team]. It’s just got to be done.

“It’s not easy. Pass rush is one of the hardest things to do in the league. But they drafted me to do it. So whatever the task is, I’ve got to go make plays.”

Let’s leave it there. Now Thibodeaux has to go out and do it. Plain and simple. No more talk.

Giants’ Brian Daboll has confidence in Deonte Banks, Tre Hawkins

The New York Giants’ young cornerbacks will have their hands full this Monday night with the Seattle Seahawks’ talented wide receiver group.

DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba are a formidable trio for any NFL secondary, never mind one that will start two rookies such as the Giants (Deonte Banks, Tre Hawkins III) will in this game.

Buy Giants Tickets

Giants head coach Brian Daboll was asked on Saturday about the growing pains teams face when putting young players in key positions.

“That’s a good question,” Daboll said. “I’d say any young player, starting with rookies, but even second-year guys, they have to play. There’s going to be some quote-unquote growing pains at times with any young player. But I think as long as they’re improving, and you can see it at practice, they get some more familiarity in game situations.

“They’re good players. Put them into different situations. Hopefully, the next time they react to a situation, whatever that may be, they learn from it, and they’re able to execute it better than the first time that they did it. But I have a lot of confidence in our young guys. We’ll just keep on rolling along with them.”

So far this season, the Giants are allowing 19.7 receptions per game, seventh-best in the NFL, and are in the middle of the pack when it comes to passing yards allowed (223.7).

New York Giants still waiting for their pass rush to arrive

The New York Giants have invested heavily in pass rushers over the past few years — an investment they are still waiting to reap the benefits of.

In 2021, they selected Georgia outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari with the 50th overall pick. After a promising inaugural season in which he set a franchise record for sacks by a rookie, Ojulari has been besieged by injuries, playing in just seven games last season and one this year.

Buy Giants Tickets

Ojulari has missed the past two games with a hamstring injury.

The Giants drafted Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux with the fifth overall pick last year to pair with Ojulari, as bookends of sorts, but that plan has not fully manifested itself as of yet.

Thibodeaux has had some ‘a-ha’ moments but has largely struggled at times. He has five sacks in 17 games as a Giant.

This season, the Giants have recorded only two sacks with 16 pressures and have the lowest quarterback-hurry rate in the NFL (2.1 percent of dropbacks).

Ojulari and Thibodeaux should be on the field together on Monday night when the Giants host the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium.

“He’s a good player for us,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Ojulari. “We’ve got to get him into those situations where we can utilize his skillset, which he does a good job of rushing the passer, but we’ve got to play good team defense, good team football in order to get to some of those situations.”

Truer words have never been spoken. The Giants have been behind in games for all but 19 seconds this season. That has to change.

6 questions with the enemy

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Geno Smith has been great thus far this season. While not quite as productive as he was in the first five games of 2022, Smith has done a much better job of protecting the ball, which was a major issue in the second half of last season. So far he’s only thrown one interception in three games and 103 attempts. He stared down Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a slant and got picked off by Deion Jones. Aside from that one glaring mistake he’s been just the right mix of aggressive and cautious, taking what the defense gives him while also pushing them downfield.

Julian Love played brilliantly last week against the Panthers, but the first two games of the season were pretty rough. Again, I don’t really blame him for it — I think schematically the safeties have been put at a disadvantage in coverage. I expect that Love will continue getting significant playing time even with Jamal Adams coming back into the lineup. Once they get these Xs and Os issues figured out (they always do by midseason) he’ll be fine.

Mario Edwards was quiet the first two games but he totally blew up against Carolina. While he still doesn’t have any sacks yet he managed to get nine pressures against the Panthers, which was a team high on a day when the whole rotation was cooking. Obviously, we’d like to see more of that going forward. Jarran Reed has been playing out of his mind, so if Edwards and Dre’Mont Jones get going too this will be a strong line across the board.
