North Korea fires artillery towards South’s islands, prompting evacuations | News

South Korea condemns move as ‘act of provocation that escalates tension and threatens peace on the Korean peninsula’.

North Korea has fired more than 200 rounds of artillery shells into the sea near a tense maritime border and towards two South Korean islands, which Seoul called “an act of provocation”.

On Friday, residents on the islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong were ordered to seek shelter due to an unspecified “situation”.

South Korea’s military said the firing caused no civilian or military damage, adding that all the shells landed on the northern side of the sea border.

“This is an act of provocation that escalates tension and threatens peace on the Korean peninsula,” said Lee Sung-joon, a spokesperson for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The defence ministry in Seoul said: “We sternly warn that North Korea bears full responsibility for this escalating crisis and strongly urge them to immediately cease these actions.

“Our military closely tracks and monitors the situation in close coordination with the United States, and will take appropriate measures in response to North Korea’s provocations,” the ministry statement added.

However, the defence ministry was yet to confirm whether the evacuation order was a response to Pyongyang’s artillery fire or Seoul’s military drills.

An official on Yeonpyeong island, which sits just south of the disputed Northern Limit Line (NLL) sea border, residents were told to move into bomb shelters on the island at the request of the South Korean military.

A text message sent to residents and confirmed by an island official cited “naval fire” to be conducted by South Korean troops from 3pm (06:00 GMT) on Friday.

The South Korean military informed the affected village that there was sea firing by their own military following “a situation” near the border.

Residents of Baengnyeong island, located to the west of Yeonpyeong and in proximity to the sea border, were also directed to evacuate, as confirmed by a village official.

Since the 1990s, Pyongyang has disputed the NLL – drawn up at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War – arguing it should lie far to the south.

In 2010, the North Korean artillery targeted Yeonpyeong island, resulting in casualties, including civilians. Pyongyang asserted it was provoked by Seoul’s live-fire drills that dropped shells into its territorial waters.

China calls for ‘restraint’

“Under the current situation, we hope that all relevant parties maintain calm and restraint, refrain from taking actions that aggravate tensions, avoid further escalation of the situation, and create conditions for the resumption of meaningful dialogue,” China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters on Friday.

“Confrontations between relevant parties have intensified recently, and the situation on the peninsula continues to be tense,” Wang said.

This week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his military to “thoroughly annihilate” South Korea and the United States if they initiate a military confrontation in another round of bellicose rhetoric targeting Seoul and Washington.

The relationship between the two Koreas has been at its lowest point in decades of strained relations between the neighbouring countries.

North Korea has recently ramped up its nuclear and military threats, successfully launching a reconnaissance satellite on its third attempt in November and earlier this month testing the solid-fuel Hwasong-18, its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), for the third time in 2023.

Flamengo reach out to Manchester United about possible Facundo Pellistri transfer – Man United News And Transfer News

1

Brazilian giants Flamengo reportedly established contact with Manchester United to inquire about the possibility of signing Facundo Pellistri.

It’s believed that Pellistri could be one of the United players to depart the club in January.

This season, he has managed only 13 appearances for United and just 363 minutes of football across all competitions.

During a season in which the United forwards have struggled to have an impact, Pellistri has been unable to break into the team.

In particular, the Red Devils have massive issues in the right-wing position. Antony has been extremely poor. Couple this with Jadon Sancho’s banishment from the first team and Amad Diallo’s long recovery period from injury and it’s puzzling why Pellistri hasn’t been afforded more minutes.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person revealed that United are not only considering sending the Uruguayan out on loan but permanent offers will also be entertained. It was relayed that the player was told as much by the club.

Ligue 1 giants OGC-Nice, who are owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS, are thought to be admirers of the United star.

There is also admiration from Spain, Italy and the Netherlands for Pellistri.

According to Uruguay-based journalist Sebas Giovanelli, Flamengo are another outfit that would be keen on adding Pellistri to their ranks.

Indeed, Giovanelli says that Flamengo “asked” United about the 22-year-old’s availability.

This is not the first time Tite’s side have been linked to Pellistri.

In January 2023, it was relayed that the Brazilian outfit were in talks with United for a possible loan deal involving Pellistri.

However, Fabrizio Romano later explained that Flamengo was no longer an option for Pellistri who went on to stay at Old Trafford.

Giovanelli does not clarify whether Flamengo’s renewed interest is for a permanent transfer or a loan move.

ChatGPT App Could Soon Be Set as the Default Assistant on Android Phones: Report

The rise of generative AI applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot have made existing standard AI voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant feel obsolete. Where advanced chatbots can hold human-like conversations, respond to queries on multiple topics, and can now even pull real-time information from the Internet, AI assistants on phones can do limited tasks. The ChatGPT app on both iOS and Android goes a long way in substituting the default assistant on the device. But now, OpenAI’s wildly successful chatbot, could likely properly replace Google Assistant on Android smartphones.

A report by Android Authority says that a code within the latest version of the ChatGPT Android app suggests that it could be set as the default assistant on an Android device..

According to the report, ChatGPT version 1.2023.352, which released last month, included a new activity named ‘com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity.’ The activity remains disabled by default, but can be manually enabled and launched. Once launched, it shows up on the device screen as an overlay with the same animation as ChatGPT app’s voice chat mode, the report claims. “This overlay appears over other apps and doesn’t take up the entire screen like the in-app voice chat mode. So, presumably, you could talk to ChatGPT from any screen by invoking this assistant,” it adds.

It’s clear, however, that assistant mode is a work in progress. The animation that plays when launching the activity reportedly doesn’t finish and the activity shuts down before you can interact with the chatbot. The report also says that the code required for the ChatGPT app to work as a “default digital assistant app” exists only partially. The ChatGPT app also seems to be missing necessary declarations and metadata tags that would allow it to be set as the default assistant on a device.

The AI assistant wars on mobile phones are about to kick off, with Google Assistant and Siri scrambling to catch up to modern chatbots. The ChatGPT app rolled out its voice chat feature for all free users on Android and iOS in November, effectively allowing the app to act as a voice assistant. Bear in mind, however, that free ChatGPT users cannot access real-time information from the Web on the app, so you can’t ask the chatbot about the latest sports scores or the weather forecast in your city, for example. You can, however, do that on the GPT-4 powered Bing app or the new standalone Copilot app from Microsoft, which launched on both Android and iOS last week.

While Android users don’t yet have a way to bring up the ChatGPT app easily with a gesture, like they would bring up the Google Assistant, iPhone 15 Pro users can simply bind the app with the dedicated Action Button, to bring it up and start conversing with the press of a single button. Google, meanwhile, is hard at work to bring Bard, its own generative AI chatbot, to Google Assistant. The company also recently announced Gemini, its most powerful AI model to date that would compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model.

Apple, on the other hand, seems to the one lagging behind in the AI assistant race. The iPhone maker is reportedly working on an AI-infused iOS 18 that will likely power its next lineup of smartphones. The default voice assistant on the upcoming iPhone 16 is said to get a major AI update, with the Siri team reportedly rejigged in Q3 2023 to work on including large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC).

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked will take place on January 17 and the Galaxy S24 series is expected to debut during the launch event. Leaks over the last few months suggest that Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400 chipsets will be used in the regular Galaxy S24 in most countries. Now, another tipster has made a chipset related claim. He also tipped the India pricing of Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra. All models in last year’s Galaxy S23 range run on a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.

Tipster Tarun Vats on X (formerly Twitter) posted that Samsung could launch the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC variant of the Galaxy S24+ in India. However, the India variant of the Galaxy S24 is said to run on Exynos 2400 SoC. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, meanwhile, is expected to use a Snapdragon processor regardless of the region.

According to the tipster, the price of Galaxy S24+ will start at either Rs. 1,04,999 or Rs. 1,05,999 for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to be priced at Rs. 1,34,999 or Rs. 1,35,999 for the same RAM and storage configuration.

Last year, the Galaxy S23+ was launched with an initial price tag of Rs. 94,999 for the 8GB + 256GB version. The 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant of the Galaxy S23 Ultra debuted at Rs. 1,24,999.

Samsung will host its Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17 at 11.30pm IST (1.00pm EST) at the SAP in San Jose, California. The firm is currently accepting reservations for the new Galaxy S series smartphones in India.

The Galaxy S24 family is tipped to ship with Android 14-based One UI 6.1 and feature AMOLED LTPO displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to come with a 200-megapixel quad camera setup, while the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ models could pack 50-megapixel triple camera units.

Expected to succeed the Poco X5 Pro, the upcoming Poco X6 Pro is tipped to be a rebadged version of the Redmi K70E, which was introduced in China in November 2023. Previously, several leaks and reports have hinted at the design and key specifications of the high-end Poxo X6 series model. The company has now revealed the OS details and AnTuTu score of the handset.

A post on X by Poco India revealed that the upcoming Poco X6 Pro will ship with Xiaomi’s new HyperOS. The user interface was introduced with the Xiaomi 14 series in China. The social media post also confirmed the model’s Flipkart availability in India.

In another post, the company revealed that the Poco X6 Pro has an AnTuTu score of more than 1.4 million, which is claimed to be a “segment best” score and seemingly makes it fast enough to offer competition to several flagship smartphones. A Poco Global post even teases the handset as a “super speedy quasi-flagship” model. This teaser also gives us a glimpse of the rear camera module of the phone, which is similar to that of the one seen on the Redmi K70E. Three circular camera units and a circular LED flash unit are placed within a rectangular module on the top left corner of the back panel.

The Poco X6 Pro will also come with a WildBoost Optimisation 2.0 feature that is said to enhance the user’s gaming experience. It will also carry a large stainless steel 5,000mm2 vapour chamber for improved cooling.

According to an earlier leak, the Poco X6 Pro is expected to sport a 6.67-inch 1.5K LTPS display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The model is confirmed to get a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 Ultra chipset. Leaked design renders have suggested that the handset may be offered in black, grey, and yellow colour options.

In the camera department, the Poco X6 Pro is tipped to feature a triple rear camera system with a 67-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support, an 8-megapixel sensor with an ultrawide lens, and a 2-megapixel macro shooter. It is also said to pack a 5,000mAh battery with 67W wired fast charging support.

Senegal top court rejects opposition leader Sonko’s appeal in libel case | Politics News

Ruling could jeopardise popular politician’s chances of running in February’s presidential elections.

Senegal’s Supreme Court has ruled against opposition politician Ousmane Sonko’s appeal in his defamation conviction, a decision that puts his chances of running in presidential elections at risk.

“The sentence and fines have been confirmed. Sonko lost on all counts,” state lawyer El Hadji Diouf said on Friday after the judge ruled to uphold the six-month suspended sentence following a more than 12-hour hearing.

He added that Sonko was “now totally banned from taking part in an election”. The 49-year-old had filed his candidacy papers last month, while in custody, to compete in the February 25 elections.

Sonko has been in jail since July after his arrest on insurrection charges, when he was also struck off the country’s electoral rolls.

He has faced multiple court cases over the past two years for charges including libel and rape, which he denies. The cases against him have triggered deadly violence in the West African nation.

After deliberations that extended from Thursday into the early hours of Friday, the court rejected Sonko’s appeal against the May conviction. According to Senegalese law, Sonko cannot compete in the presidential race while such a conviction is upheld.

His legal team, however, said the setback was not final. “The fight will continue,” his lawyer Cire Cledor Ly told reporters outside the court building in the capital, Dakar.

Sonko’s legal troubles began when he was accused of rape in 2021, sparking deadly unrest across the country that has since flared up sporadically over various court decisions.

He denies any wrongdoing and says all charges against him are politically motivated. The government, which accuses Sonko of stoking violence, dissolved his Patriots of Senegal (PASTEF) party in July.

“No one doubts the political aspect of this affair which aims to eliminate the leader of the opposition,” said PASTEF spokesperson El Malick Ndiaye on the latest ruling. “Sonko still remains in the race,” he said on national radio.

Sonko placed third in Senegal’s 2019 presidential election and is popular with the country’s youth. His supporters maintain the charges against him are part of a government effort to derail his candidacy in this year’s polls.

He is seen as a main opposition challenger in the race to succeed President Macky Sall, who announced in July that he would not seek a controversial third mandate following months of ambiguity and speculation about his intentions.

In December, a court in the southern city of Zinguichor, where Sonko is mayor, ordered that he be reinstated on the electoral register.

The electoral commission is reviewing applications and is scheduled to publish a final list of cleared presidential candidates by January 20.
