Snapchat Introduces Editable Chats, Emoji Reactions and More Features

Snapchat is introducing new features that will allow its users to interact with the platform in newer ways and improve existing experiences. There are a couple of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features as well, and all of these are gradually being rolled out. Some of these features will only be available to the Snapchat+ paid subscribers. The social media platform is adding features such as Editable Chats, Emoji Reactions, My AI Reminders, an AI-powered feature to generate custom outfits for their Bitmoji avatar, and more.

Snapchat New Features

The social media platform announced the new features in a newsroom post. Making the announcement, the company said, “Every day, Snapchatters create more than 5 billion Snaps on average to communicate visually with their friends. Now, we’re adding new features to help Snapchatters connect even more quickly, express themselves in new ways, and use My AI to stay organized amid busy lives and schedules.”

Editable Chats is a new addition that will allow users to edit their messages after sending them for up to five minutes. The feature works similarly to WhatsApp’s message editing feature. This is currently only available to Snapchat+ users but it may later be expanded to all users.

Snapchat users can currently only react to a message using Bitmoji. However, with the Emoji Reactions feature, they will be able to use any emoji to react to messages. Another interesting feature is My AI Reminders which will allow users to set reminders by sending one quick message to My AI containing the name of the event, date, and time. Once sent, My AI will start an in-app countdown and will share a notification when the counter hits zero. Snap Map is also getting a minor upgrade. Users will be able to react to other users on the map with emojis.

Apart from these, two new AI features are also coming to Snapchat. First is an AI-powered Bitmoji outfit generator. Users can now write a short description of the outfit they want and the AI will generate a selection of similar garments. These outfits can have unique patterns, colours, designs, and more. The second feature was rolled out a few days ago and dubbed the ‘90s AI Lens. The AI Lens is essentially an AI-powered filter with creative effects that are auto-applied once an image is clicked. This particular one brings in the ‘90s aesthetics.

Snapchat to Display Watermark on Images Created Using Snap’s Generative AI Tools

Snapchat announced on Tuesday that it will soon start adding a watermark to the artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images created using its tools. The platform allows its premium users to generate AI images through the platform’s native conversational chatbot ‘My AI’ and its Dreams feature. The watermark will be a visual addition to highlight that it was created synthetically and will be shown for images shared in the app as well as when they are exported to a user’s camera roll.

In a post on its website, parent company Snap highlighted the wide range of AI-powered features it has added since 2015 such as AR Lenses, My AI, Generative AI Chat Wallpaper, and more. It also mentions the company’s efforts to be more transparent when users are interacting with AI-powered content on its platform.

Snapchat says it will begin adding a watermark to all of its AI-generated images for increased transparency. This will apply to images generated from the My AI bot or background generation through Dreams. The watermark is a visual marker of Snapchat’s ghost logo along with the sparkle icon which has become representative of AI.

The company’s support page on generative AI has warned users against removing its ‘Ghost with sparkles’ watermark from AI-generated images, adding that doing so is a violation of the platform’s terms and conditions.

Notably, OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 images follow the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) protocol and add AI-related information into the metadata of the images. Google also has its own watermarking technology called SynthID for multimedia content created using its tools.

Snapchat also says that all of the AI features on the platform undergo a strict internal review and AI red teaming to identify and remove any potential flaws in the AI model. Red teaming is a tactic used by companies where it lets external independent groups stress test the feature to reveal any flaws.

Currently, only Snapchat+ users can access My AI to create AI-generated images, although all users can create up to eight Dream images. Both features were added by the company last year. In India, Snapchat+ subscription is priced at Rs. 49 a month or Rs. 499 for a year.

Snapchat is reportedly working on a subscription plan and it could give users access to multiple features including the ability to pin a conversation. With the rollout of Snapchat+, users may have to pay to access exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features on the social media platform. With the premium subscription, Snapchat users will get custom Snapchat icons and a special badge. The upcoming feature was first spotted by a notable developer on Twitter. According to him, the Snapchat+ subscription starts at EUR 4.59 (roughly Rs. 370) per month.

Noted developer Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) on Twitter suggested that Snapchat is working on a new subscription plan called Snapchat+. Users who will opt for the subscription plan will have access to custom Snapchat icons, a special badge and will allow users to pin a conversation with a friend. The screenshot shared by Paluzzi indicates the price details of the Snapchat+ subscription.

According to the tweet, the one-month Snapchat+ subscription costs EUR 4.59 (roughly Rs. 370), while the six months plan is priced at EUR 24.99 (roughly Rs. 2,000). The one year subscription plan is shown with a price tag of EUR 45.99 (roughly Rs. 3,700). Besides, the company could offer a one-week free trial for users. The social media platform has introduced many new features recently. It announced a new Shared Stories functionality that allows users who have already been added to a Shared Stories group, to invite other Snapchatters into that group to view and contribute to the story. Also, Snapchat parent Snap expanded its partnership with ShareChat’s Moj to integrate its AR Camera Kit within MX TakaTak.
