Snapchat+ Members Get Custom Story Expiration, More Features Released

Snap rolled out several new features for the members of its Snapchat+ premium subscription service on Thursday. These features include Custom Story Expiration, which enables users to manually select the time limit for the duration a story stays publicly visible. There are also new custom notifications, story borders, and more now available to Snapchat+ members. With the arrival of the holiday season, the company has now also made it easy to gift a Snapchat+ subscription to a friend through the app.

Snap announced the new Snapchat+ features on Thursday. Starting with the all-new Custom Story Expiration feature, which gives users the option to set the expiration time of a story between an hour to one week. In comparison, a regular Snapchat story automatically expires after 24 hours.

Snapchat+ is also getting new custom notification sounds that allow users to choose different tones for different friends. It would allow users to recognise the person who Snapped them without picking up their smartphone. There are more customisation options available now, including camera colour borders. Snap has also released three new spooky Bitmoji Backgrounds that are inspired by the festival of Halloween.

The Snapchat+ subscription officially arrived in India a few months back in August. Its members are given access to a collection of exclusive experimental and pre-release features before regular users. They also receive prioritised support from the Snapchat team. It is available in India at a price of Rs. 49 per month. Customers in the US have to pay $3.99 (roughly Rs. 330) for a monthly Snapchat+ subscription.

At launch, it offered users six exclusive features — Badge, Custom App Icons, Rewatch Indicator, Best Friends Forever, Ghost Trails on Snap Map, and Solar System. Snapchat+ has since then reached over a million subscribers, as per the company. Now, members can also gift this premium subscription to their friends through the app.

Snapchat+ Premium Subscription Service Reaches 1 Million Subscribers in Less Than 3 Months

Snap, parent company of social media app Snapchat, has reached 1 million subscribers for its Snapchat premium subscription, the company said on Monday, after launching the service in June as a new source of revenue.

Social media companies including Snap, Twitter, and Meta Platforms, which all earn the majority of revenue from selling digital advertising, are facing a weakening ad market due to record-high inflation causing brands to reign in their marketing spending.

Snap’s shares dropped 25 percent last month after disappointing second quarter earnings, as it suffered from weaker advertising demand than Wall Street had expected. Chief Executive Evan Spiegel said the company would work to speed up revenue growth, in part through new sources of revenue.

Snapchat , which costs $3.99 (roughly Rs. 300) per month in the United States, offers access to 11 exclusive features not yet available to general users. Four new features announced Monday include new Snapchat app icon designs and the ability for subscribers to have their messages be more visible to celebrities on Snapchat. Subscribers can also use Snapchat on desktops.

The paid subscription feature is now expanding to more countries including Saudi Arabia, India and Egypt, for a total of 25 markets, Snap said.

Twitter, which is in a legal battle with billionaire Elon Musk over his attempt to walk away from his $44-billion (roughly Rs. 3,49,970 crore) deal to buy the company, also previously launched a $4.99 (roughly Rs. 400) per month subscription product called Twitter Blue. Facebook and Instagram do not offer paid subscriptions as of now.

Snapchat Plus Paid Subscription Service Launched, Now Available in US at $3.99 per Month

Snap on Wednesday launched a paid version of the Snapchat app in the US, priced at $3.99 (nearly Rs. 315) a month, and a few other markets, in a major step away from a revenue model dependent mostly on advertising.

Snap, which had teased the subscription version, Snapchat+, earlier this month, said the paid service would be available in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates at launch.

Social media firms are under pressure as companies cut back on ad budgets in response to rising costs and weakening consumer spending.

Last month, Snap said it would miss revenue and profit targets for the second quarter and would have to slow hiring and lower spending, sending its shares down over 40 percent in a single day.

Initial features in the paid version include the ability to change the app’s icon, see who re-watched a story and pin other users on chat history as a ‘BFF’, Snap’s senior vice president of product, Jacob Andreou, told tech news site The Verge.

In addition to the paid service, the social media platform has introduced many new features recently. It announced a new Shared Stories functionality that allows users who have already been added to a Shared Stories group, to invite other Snapchatters into that group to view and contribute to the story. Also, Snapchat parent Snap expanded its partnership with ShareChat’s Moj to integrate its AR Camera Kit within MX TakaTak. With this, the MX TakaTak app now offers the ability to access new camera experiences powered by Snapchat’s augmented reality (AR) technology.
