Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Tipped to Feature a Flat Display; Dimensions Suggested

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is expected to debut in early 2024 as the flagship lineup from the South Korean tech giant. The Galaxy S24 family is expected to include three models — Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Months ahead of the launch, several rumours related to the upcoming smartphones have been making rounds on the Internet. Most recently, the camera details of the high-end variant, Galaxy S24 Ultra, had been leaked. Now, a tipster claims that the Ultra variant would feature a flat display. 

Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) suggested on X (formerly Twitter) that the Galaxy S24 Ultra is likely to sport a flat screen, as indicated from the details regarding the handset’s width of 79mm. This would be different from rest of the Ultra handsets from Samsung that have launched with a curved display. 

In another post, the tipster also revealed the expected dimensions of the Galaxy S24 Ultra variant, which could be 162.3 X 79 X 8.6mm, with a 6.8-inch screen and a display resolution of 3120 ×1440 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9.

Previous leaks about the smartphone have indicated that the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone could feature new OLED displays made using the M13 material. The smartphone, along with other models in the Galaxy S24 lineup, is expected to be powered by an Exynos 2400 SoC in select markets, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in other countries. The handset is also said to offer fast charging support of 45W.

In terms of camera, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has been reported to come with an upgraded telephoto camera sensor over its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The upcoming smartphone could pack a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Another report suggested that the smartphone is likely to sport a 200-megapixel Samsung HP2 primary camera, and a 12-megapixel Sony IMX564 ultra-wide lens. It is expected to run on Android 14-based One UI 6.0 out-of-the-box.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra May Use EV Battery Stacking Method to Offer Longer Battery Life

Samsung launched the Galaxy S23 series in February and rumours about the next-generation Galaxy S flagship smartphones have already started coming in. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is expected to go official in 2024, is tipped to come with a new EV battery technology to offer improved battery life. Samsung’s battery manufacturing division is reportedly planning to apply a capacity increase technology used in their electric car cells and inside the Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to go official alongside the vanilla Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+.

According to a report by The Elec (in Korean), Samsung’s SDI division, that develops and manufactures Li-Ion batteries is looking to implement a new battery stacking method for small batteries aimed at smartphones, tablets, notebooks and other consumer electronics devices. Samsung SDI reportedly collaborated with two Chinese companies to use stacking for the manufacture of Gen 5 batteries aimed at electric cars. This stacking mechanism, borrowed from the EV industry, would tightly stack battery components like cathodes and anodes on top of each other for increased energy density.

Samsung is speculated to debut this battery technology with Galaxy S24 Ultra. Other flagship smartphones and tablets are likely to follow suit. The stacking method is said to increase energy density by over 10 percent to the traditional winding method where battery materials are rolled into jelly rolls and put in cans.

The new Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra were launched during the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event in February. The price of the Galaxy S23 starts at Rs. 74,999 in India, while Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra have an initial price tag of Rs. 94,999 and Rs. 1,34,999 respectively. They are powered by a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy SoC.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Key Specifications Tipped, Ultra Model May Get 144Hz Refresh Rate Display

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is expected to launch in the markets next year. The flagship series is also expected to feature three models like its predecessors – a Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and a Galaxy S24 Ultra. The company launched the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year that included the Samsung Galaxy S23, the Samsung Galaxy S23+ and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The South Korean tech giant has launched a bunch of other smartphones since then and is expected to release many more later this year.

According to a report by SamLover, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a display with a refresh rate of 144Hz. Up until this date, Samsung has only used display panels with refresh rates up to 120Hz. Even the Galaxy S23 Ultra, part of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, comes with a 120Hz refresh rate display. The Galaxy S24 Ultra could be the first Samsung handset to feature a 144Hz display, which should offer smoother animation and gaming experiences.

The report suggests several other specifications of the Galaxy S24 series as well. The models could be powered by Qualcomm’s yet unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and come equipped with UFS 4.1 storage. The handsets are expected to boot Android 14-based One UI 6.0. The camera units are said to feature 200-megapixel sensors with unspecified improvements and better zooming capabilities. Since nothing official has yet been announced regarding the Galaxy S24 series, all these reports and specifications should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The possibility of Samsung incorporating satellite connectivity with the Galaxy S24 series has also been suggested in the report. Earlier this year, TM Roh, president and head of Samsung’s mobile experience business, said in an interview with CNET that it’s too soon to implement the feature in Samsung devices since satellite functionality is still quite restricted on smartphones.

“When there is the right timing, infrastructure and the technology [is] ready, then of course for Samsung Galaxy, for our mobile division, we would also actively consider adopting this feature as well,” Roh added.
