Samsung Said to Be Working on 1-Inch and 440-Megapixel Camera Sensors: All Details

Samsung is said to be working on new camera sensors with upgraded specifications. Earlier this year, the South Korean tech giant released its flagship Galaxy S23 series. The lineup included a Samsung Galaxy S23, Samsung Galaxy S23+ and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra models. The quad-rear camera unit of the high-end Ultra model comes with a 200-megapixel primary sensor with a wide-angle lens, accompanied by a 12-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens, a 10-megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens, and another 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 10x optical zoom.

A Sammobile report citing a tweet by tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) hinted that Samsung is working on a new batch of ISOCELL camera sensors. The listed sensors are tipped to go into mass production by the latter half of 2024. The tipster suggested that the company is working on a 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN6 1.6-inch sensor, a 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP7 0.6-inch sensor, and a 440-megapixel ISOCELL HU1 with an unspecified-sized sensor.

The report suggested that the ISOCELL GN6 is likely to be the mobile and camera manufacturer’s “biggest and first” 1-inch sensor which could compete with the Sony IMX989 sensor, which is expected to be a worthy camera upgrade for upcoming flagship smartphones.

The rumoured 440-megapixel ISOCELL HU1 camera sensor is expected to feature a larger than a 1-inch lens. Since Samsung uses its camera sensors for both smartphones and assisted smart-driving cars, it is unclear if the sensor will be used in phones or cars, the report added. The company had also notably previously stated that it wants to work on camera sensors with up to 600-megapixel resolution.

The latest Samsung model with the highest camera resolution yet, the Galaxy S23 Ultra starts at Rs. 1,24,999 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, while the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage model and 12GB RAM + 1TB storage variant are priced at Rs. 1,34,999 and Rs. 1,54,999, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Base Variant Costs $469 to Manufacture: Counterpoint

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the high-end Android handset powered by a customised version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC was launched in February this year. The flagship smartphone’s price starts at $1199 (roughly Rs. 98,300) for the base 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant. Now, a bill of materials (BoM) analysis of Galaxy S23 Ultra by research firm Counterpoint shows how much of that price tag accounts for the internals. The BoM for Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s base variant is reportedly less than 40 percent of the retail value of the handset.

A latest bill of materials (BoM) analysis by Counterpoint’s component research service suggests that Samsung is generating a fair profit from its premium phone. Producing the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage version of Galaxy S23 Ultra costs the South Korean smartphone company $469. As per the report, the processor and cellular components accounted for 34 percent of the model’s BoM cost. The premium handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.

Besides the customised SoC, Qualcomm has designed the fingerprint sensor IC, key power management ICs, audio codec, RF power amplifiers, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth, GPS and Sub-6GHz transceiver in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. With this Qualcomm’s share in the handset has increased to an ‘all-time high’, noted Counterpoint.

Display (18 percent) and the “others” category (15 percent) also accounted for the biggest chunk of BoM. The camera contributed 14 percent of the total BoM cost of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, followed by Memory (11 percent) and Casing (8 percent).

The second-largest beneficiary of Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung. Samsung’s other business units supply the 256GB NAND flash and the 6.8-inch AMOLED display for the device. In the camera subsystem, Samsung (SEMCO) and Sony make the major share of the BoM. Samsung provides the 200-megapixel wide-angle camera (S5KHP2) and 12-megapixel selfie camera (S5K3LU), while Sony supplies the 12-megapixel ultrawide (IMX564) senior, 10-megapixel telephoto and periscope telephoto (IMX754) sensors.

Further, Silicon Mitus and Maxim are the providers of power management ICs. STM designs the laser autofocus module, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, and touch panel controller. The battery is packaged by Samsung and the cell is provided by ATL. The quick charging IC is sourced from NXP while the 15W wireless charging IC is from Convenient Power.

Samsung Galaxy A34 5G was recently launched by the company in India alongside the more expensive Galaxy A54 5G smartphone. How does this phone fare against the Nothing Phone 1 and the iQoo Neo 7? Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Tipped to Feature a Highly Improved Night Mode in Camera

Samsung Galaxy S23 series is expected to go official next month. Rumours about the upcoming vanilla Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra have been floating around for quite some time now and a new leak now hints at the camera specifications of the top-end Ultra model. Samsung is tipped to offer a “night vision” camera with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It is speculated to come with a quad rear camera setup, headlined by a 200-megapixel primary sensor.

As per the tweet by known tipster Ice universe (@UniverseIce), the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will come with a “night vision” camera. “I need to emphasize again that the S23 Ultra’s night camera is really “night vision,” he tweeted. Going by the tip, the South Korean brand may have improved the night mode on the upcoming smartphone. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is likely to compete with the likes of the recently launched Vivo X90 Pro+ in low-light imaging.

The tipster has not said anything about the camera details of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, however, earlier reports have suggested that the device will be equipped with a quad rear camera setup. The camera unit could include a 200-megapixel primary sensor, 108-megapixel secondary sensor and two 12-megapixel sensors. On the front, the TENAA listing suggested a 12-megapixel sensor.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is said to come with a 6.8-inch display with a 1,440×3,088 pixels resolution with 16.7 million colour depth. It is expected to be powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, coupled with 12GB and up to 1TB of internal storage. It is said to come with a 5,000mAh battery.

Recently, a report mentioned that Samsung Galaxy S23 series will arrive as early as February at the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event. Samsung traditionally launches its flagship smartphones in February or March.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Tipped to Have Same Display, Camera Module Design as Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is expected to launch next year, along with the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+. Rumours so far have suggested that the new phones should be receiving minor cosmetic updates, however a latest tip suggests that the Galaxy S23 Ultra in particular won’t be getting the rumoured design updates for its display and camera module, and will in fact, look very similar to the current Galaxy S22 Ultra. The upcoming phone will continue to sport a narrow forehead and wide chin, while the cutouts for the laser autofocus sensor and one of the telephoto cameras will have a slightly raised module and won’t sit flush with the frame, as previously rumoured.

Prolific tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) tweeted that he has received some new information that points to the fact that the previously leaked CAD renders of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra are not entirely accurate.

The renders showed the Galaxy S23 Ultra having a symmetrically thick upper and lower display bezel, which is not expected to be true. The image also showed two of the five cutouts on the back of the phone to sit flush with the body, without any protrusion. This too is most likely not true as according to the tipster; these cutouts will also have a slight bulge like the rest of the camera modules.

Some fans of the brand would probably be disappointed by this, if it does indeed turn out to be true, however we can’t say we’re surprised. We’ve seen Apple reuse the same design for its iPhones for a couple of years now, with just minor tweaks being added with every new generation. The current Galaxy S22 Ultra is arguably Samsung’s most refined design yet for a flagship, so we’re not surprised that it might not tinker around with it too much.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S23 series early next year. As per recent leaks, the upcoming models could be powered by the Exynos 2300 SoC or the next flagship SoC from Qualcomm, depending on the region where it’s sold.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is said to include a 5,000mAh battery and is expected to pack its recently announced 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Said to Feature Same Rear Camera Setup as Galaxy S22 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has been part of several leaks and rumours for the past few months. The upcoming flagship phone is said to feature a rear camera module with a look and feel similar to that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The latter has a quad-camera setup on the back, with individual camera lenses protruding out of the body. The Galaxy S23 Ultra could be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It is expected to feature the unannounced 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor and could pack a 5,000mAh battery.

Known tipster Ice universe (@UniverseIce) on Twitter claims that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will sport the same camera design as the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (review) has a different quad rear camera setup compared to the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The rear camera panel has a minimalist look with individual camera lenses standing out of the body with sensors circled by rings. Another ring houses the laser autofocus sensor.

The quad-camera setup of the Galaxy S22 Ultra consists of a 108-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view, and two 10-megapixel sensors.

Recent leaks have indicated that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It is said to include 5,000mAh battery. Samsung is expected to pack the unannounced 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor on the upcoming device.

The anticipated Galaxy S23 Ultra is likely to come with upgrades over the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S22 Ultra was launched in India in February with a starting price tag of Rs. 1,09,999.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with quad-HD+ resolution and a 120Hz peak refresh rate. It packs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and offers up to 12GB of RAM. The handset offers up to 512GB of onboard storage, a 40-megapixel selfie camera sensor, and a 5,000mAh battery with support for 45W wired and 15W wireless charging.
