Google Officially Reveals Pixel Fold in a Short Video Teaser Ahead of Google I/O 2023 Launch

After plenty of rumours and leaks, Google finally made official the existence of its upcoming foldable device — the Pixel Fold. Google released a short teaser video on its social media channels on the occasion of Star Wars Day, showcasing the device’s design, hinge mechanism, inner display, and the underlying software. In each post across social media, Google also hinted at a 10 May announcement, which happens to be the first day of Google’s annual I/O 2023 developer conference. Apart from the Pixel Fold, Google will also be announcing its successor to the Pixel 6a, called the Pixel 7a, and the Pixel Tablet at the upcoming event.

The video teaser is quite short, but unlike most teasers, it showcases the Pixel Fold in its entirety, giving us a good idea about its design, hinge, display, and software. The video starts off by showing what appears to be a chunky camera module at the back sporting three cameras and an LED flash unit, alongside a “mysterious” grille, as its purpose is yet to be confirmed. We are then treated to a view of the hinge, which for now, appears to fold the two halves shut without a visible gap.

Next up is a view of the inner display and software layout. What’s evident is the rather thick bezel, which is a detail the Galaxy Z Fold dealt with in its earlier models. Our best guess is that with a phone to tablet form factor, Google may have thought of thicker bezels as it generally makes a tablet easier to hold. Then there’s also space needed for the inner selfie camera — shown off in recent leaks —placed near the top right corner.

Software-wise, the layout looks very familiar to a regular Android 13 homescreen. So, we will have to wait and watch to know what sort of optimisations Google has made for its first foldable Pixel device.

And lastly, we get a glimpse of the outer display which has its Always on Display feature enabled, so we don’t have an idea of its bezel. What is clearly evident is that the Pixel Fold’s form factor is closer to Oppo’s Find N2, which is shorter and wider when folded compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4‘s narrow and taller design.

As per a recent report, the device will be powered by Google’s current generation Tensor G2 SoC, which already powers its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. It is expected to have a 120Hz, 5.8-inch OLED outer display (1,080×2,092 pixels) with a 17.4:9 aspect ratio and a 120Hz, 7.6-inch inner display (1,840 x 2,208 pixels) with a 6:5 aspect ratio. The foldable is said to have a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. For selfies, it is likely to sport a 9.5-megapixel selfie camera in the outer display and an 8-megapixel camera above the inner display.

Pixel Tablet Leaked Screenshots Show User Interface, Wallpapers Days After Pixel Fold UI Surfaces Online

Google Pixel Tablet is expected to make its debut sometime in 2023, according to the timeline specified by the company last year. The first Pixel branded tablet could be launched by the company in the coming months and was recently tipped to ship with an included charging dock. Days after details of the company’s rumoured Pixel Fold handset surfaced online alongside with leaked renders showing the design of the foldable phone, screenshots of the user interface and wallpapers for a device that is expected to debut as the Pixel Tablet have surfaced online.

Tipster Evan Blass (Twitter: @evleaks) has leaked images of what appear to be screenshots of the home screen of the Pixel Tablet. The eight images — four in dark mode and four in light mode — show wallpapers of birds’ wings in the background, as Google’s Material You theming engine for Android 13 affects the colours and accents of the icons and widgets on the tablet.

The Pixel Tablet is expected to ship with an optimised version of Android 13 for larger displays, as the interface shows the device’s home screen with its icons and widgets arranged according to the “landscape” layout. Last year, Google announced Android 12L as an optimised version of Android that was optimised for larger displays such as tablets — or even foldable phones.

While it is possible that these leaked screenshots were captured from a Pixel Fold smartphone or the inner display of a Pixel Tablet, one of the responses to Blass’ tweet points out that its likely to be a tablet as there is no phone icon on the home screen. Recently leaked images for the Pixel Fold hint at a slightly taller interface for Google’s foldable phone compared to these screenshots.

Last week, Blass leaked images of the Pixel Fold that showed the handset sporting a fairly large cover display with large bezels, especially on the inner display. That image showed a different layout compared to these new images, which show the search bar to the left of the dock. Meanwhile, the images of the Pixel Fold that were previously spotted online show a thicker search bar above the dock.

In April, it was reported that Google will launch its first Pixel-branded tablet in four colourways and it would be housed in an aluminium body with a nano-ceramic finish. The tablet is speculated to run on Android 13 out-of-the-box and be powered by a Tensor G2 chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM. The tablet could also ship with a Charging Speaker Dock, according to the report.

Google Pixel Fold Leaked Renders Suggest Thinner Hinge: All Details

Google Pixel Fold is expected to launch soon in the market. It is being speculated that the company may unveil the Pixel Fold at the upcoming Google I/O, scheduled for May 2023. However, Google is yet to confirm any detail officially. However, despite no official announcement, there has been a number of rumours about the purported smartphone. A recent leak by a popular tipster, displaying the design renders of the Pixel Fold, has provided new insights into the smartphone’s cover design.

The images shared by tipster Evan Blass (Twitter @evleaks) on a personal Twitter account, via 9to5Google, appear to be taken from a press render that the company could use for marketing. The leaked image shows the Pixel Fold’s outer display with a centrally aligned punch hole, the Pixel Launcher home screen with themed icons, Google’s stock apps, and a blurred At a Glance widget.

Additionally, the smartphone appears to have a wider aspect ratio and a thinner hinge. In the shared images, the Pixel Fold seems to be a lighter black colour variant.

Previously, the US pricing and full specifications of the Google Pixel Fold were leaked via a YouTube video. The phone is tipped to cost $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,47,000) for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant and $1,919 (roughly Rs. 1,57,500) for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage option. The handset is said to be available for pre-orders from May 10 via Google Store.

Google Pixel Fold specifications (expected)

The Pixel Fold will reportedly sport a 7.6-inch inner display with a 1,840 x 2,208 pixels resolution, a 6:5 aspect ratio, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The outer display is expected to be a 5.8-inch OLED panel with a 1,080×2,092 pixels resolution. The handset is tipped to be powered by Google’s Tensor G2 SoC, coupled with a Titan M2 security chip and 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

Other leaked details suggest a triple rear camera unit on the smartphone, led by a 48-megapixel primary wide-angle lens. The other two lenses on the Pixel Fold rear could include a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10.8-megapixel dual PD telephoto lens.
