Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Shahid Kapoor-Led Farzi Lead IMDb’s Most Popular Indian Movies and Web Series Rankings

Halfway into the year, IMDb has revealed a list of the 10 most popular Indian movies and TV series — so far — both of which are led by the biggest stars in Bollywood. On the film side, we’ve got the Shah Rukh Khan-led espionage thriller Pathaan, which marked the actor’s return to mainstream filming after four years. Bear in mind, this list is created using page views on IMDb as a metric and is, therefore, not an indicator of its quality. IMDb does, of course, also maintain a crowd-sourced rating system which puts a score on the quality of films, but this can quite easily be gamed by audiences.

Raj and DK’s Farzi, which leads the pack among the most popular TV series of 2023 in India, is a good example of this. Earlier this week, its lead Shahid Kapoor tweeted out an infographic, where [Farzi(https://www.gadgets360.com/tags/farzi) ranked second among the ‘Top-rated TV Series of 2023′ (worldwide) — right below HBO’s The Last of Us — adding that such a high ranking indicates a demand for a second season. What he didn’t take into consideration is the number of voters, which Farzi significantly lacks. The show earned an 8.4-star rating from a mere 35,000 voters/ viewers, while The Last of Us emerged on top with a score of 8.8/10, collected from 434,000 voters. It can, therefore, be assumed that titles with more votes have more reliable ratings.

Still, it does make sense for Farzi to be ranked as the most popular show in India (based on page views as a metric), which followed a rags-to-riches story of a small-time con artist who learns to make counterfeit money. What follows next is a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase between him and a fiery, unorthodox task force officer Michael Vedanayagam (Vijay Sethupathi), as the story veers into bigger threats involving a local gangster and some greedy accomplices who are willing to bend over at the sight of money. Its creators Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. responded to Kapoor’s tweet, expressing their desire for a second chapter as well.

“It’s extremely heartening to learn that Pathaan is first on the list by IMDb. To see the amount of love that Pathaan has received is amazing, and whenever any work gets placed first, then the thing to do is to work twice as hard on the next one to thank everyone for this recognition,” Pathaan’s lead Khan said in a prepared statement. “Most importantly, I would like to thank the team of Pathaan and the audiences across the globe for making this happen!” The film was followed closely by Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and The Kerala Story, which was bound to get some attention due to the political sentiment surrounding it. What’s interesting is that there wasn’t much distinction in IMDb traffic, regardless of whether a film was released in theatres or digitally.

Streaming originals such as Bloody Daddy (JioCinema) and Netflix’s Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga and Mission Majnu managed to secure spots among the top 10. Not all of them are from Bollywood, however; two Tamil films Varisu and Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two complete the list in positions 9 and 10, respectively.

IMDb’s press release notes that Indian audiences gravitated toward crime drama series during the first half of the year, with the sub-genre taking up eight spots out of the total 10. Standouts include Rana Naidu, Asur 2: Rise of the Dark Side, and Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo. The exceptions are the period drama Taj: Divided by Blood and Rocket Boys, the latter of which saw two visionaries Dr. Vikram Sarabhai (Ishwak Singh) and Dr. Homi J. Bhabha (Jim Sarbh) competing to launch their projects during India’s formative years in the field of science.

Pathaan Starring Shah Rukh Khan to Release in Bangladesh on May 12

If you are a Shah Rukh Khan fan living in Bangladesh and wanting to see his movie on the big screen, then there’s good news for you. After breaking all box office records in India, Pathaan is now all set to release in the neighbouring country.

As per Variety, in February this year, a consortium of 19 Bangladesh film associations decided to allow Hindi-language films to release in the country and with 10 films releasing each year. Pathaan is one of them, and it will hit the theatres in Bangladesh on May 12.

Nelson D’Souza, VP, international distribution, Yash Raj Films, said in a prepared statement, “Cinema has always been a unifying force between nations, races, and cultures. It transcends borders, galvanizes people, and plays a significant hand in bringing people together. We are incredibly thrilled that Pathaan, which has done historic business worldwide, will now get a chance to entertain audiences in Bangladesh.”

With its release in Bangladesh, Pathaan will definitely create history. Films produced by Bollywood have been banned from cinemas in Bangladesh since the country’s independence in 1972, in a bid to protect the local movie industry.

However, in 2009, the decision was relaxed to allow Wanted, starring Salman Khan, to open in the region. The release was met with protests led by a local film industry organisation, with the film getting pulled from the 50 cinemas it was running in after a week, as per Variety.

In February 2023, during an Ask Me Anything session on Twitter, SRK responded to a fan’s question about Pathaan’s Bangladesh release.

“I have been told #Pathaan will release there soon,” SRK replied to a query from a Bangladeshi fan.

Helmed by Siddharth Anand, Pathaan also starred Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in the lead roles. It is the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.

On receiving abundant love for Pathaan, SRK tweeted, “ITS NOT THE BUSINESS….ITS STRICTLY PERSONAL”. Making ppl smile & entertaining them is our business & if we don’t take it personally….it will never fly. Thanks to all who gave Pathaan love & all who worked on the film & proved ki mehnat lagan aur bharosa abhi Zinda Hai.Jai Hind.”

Pathaan also saw superstar Salman Khan in a special cameo.

Saas Bahu aur Flamingo Web Series Starring Dimple Kapadia Releases May 5 on Disney+ Hotstar

Actress Dimple Kapadia is leaving no stone unturned to impress the audience with her acting skills. After her stellar performance in ‘Pathaan‘, she is now all set to come up with a new web series titled ‘Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo’. Helmed by Homi Adajania, the project will also feature Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar, and Isha Talwar in lead roles. Produced by Maddock Films (Dinesh Vijan), ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’ will be out on May 5 on Disney+ Hotstar.

The series is billed as a new spin on the ‘saas-bahu’ drama sub-genre that generally explores the power dynamics between tough, ruthless mothers-in-law and meeker daughters-in-law. ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo’ will instead feature an ‘unapologetically hardcore’ mother-in-law and ‘steadfast and formidable’ younger women.

Excited about the project, Dimple Kapadia said, “Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo is a story of what makes ordinary people extraordinary in a world full of passion and chaos. It’s a bunch of bad-ass women telling a narrative which is often played only by male characters and believe me, it’s got some of the most colorful characters you’ll ever see. The show is as wild as my crazy director Homi Adajania’s mind. He has flipped a family drama on it’s head giving us such a captivating binge-watch that’ll be coming on Disney+ Hotstar.”

The makers also unveiled Dimple Kapadia’s first look wherein she is seen holding a gun and shooting someone. The series will also star Ashish Verma, Varun Mitra, Udit Arora, Deepak Dobriyal and Monica Dogra in pivotal roles.

Homi Adajania also shared a few details about the project, “You remember the line ‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’? When the world has scorned these women and turned its back on them, they learn to thrive by creating their own system of morality in a bold and lawless place that they inhabit. Women are the evolved half of our messed up species and Saas Bahu aur Flamingo is to date the maddest world that I have created. Its characters are so beautifully complex and conflicting, navigating their way through a world of passion, manipulation and chaos,” he shared.

Ayan Mukerji to Reportedly Direct War 2, With Hrithik Roshan as Lead

Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji is on board to direct the sequel to Hrithik Roshan starrer War, part of Yash Raj Films’ ambitious Spy Universe, say industry insiders.

Though there is no official announcement, the 39-year-old Brahmāstra director also hinted as much in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“The Universe has presented me with a very special opportunity recently a very special movie to step into and direct! What the movie is… More on that when the time is right.

“An opportunity that challenges me and terribly excites me… one where I will learn, be inspired and where I will grow! So, I have decided to take it up,” Mukerji said. Conceptualised by YRF boss Aditya Chopra, the ‘YRF Spy Universe‘ brings three franchises headlined by leading stars — Salman Khan‘s Tiger movies, Shah Rukh Khan‘s Pathaan, and Roshan’s War — under one umbrella.

The studio’s recent blockbuster Pathaan marked the beginning with a cameo by Salman as Avinash Singh Rathore aka Tiger. It also had plenty of references to Roshan’s War character, Kabir Dhaliwal.

Aditya Chopra is choosing the captain of the ship for each YRF Spy Universe film strategically. Ayan has delivered big hits which appeals to all audience segments and have the pulse of Indian audiences. He has shown that he knows how to mount a film with a huge scale, which is essential for someone to direct War 2,” said an industry insider.

“Plus, he is a young filmmaker who can bring a different kind of newness to the Spy Universe. Ayan will have his unique take on how to make an epic action spectacle with War 2. Aditya Chopra trusts him to take the franchise forward,” they added.

Besides War 2, Mukerji is also working on the two-part follow-up to his 2022 hit Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

His earlier films include Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
