Oppo Reno 11 Series to Get Generative AI Features Soon, AI Center Launched

Oppo Reno 11 series will soon be equipped with generative artificial intelligence (AI)-based features, the company stated on Wednesday. Alongside, the Chinese smartphone maker also revealed that it has established an AI Center for innovation in the emerging technology. The institution will focus on bringing new features to its existing smartphones and building AI-ready phones in the future. Earlier this week, Oppo added multiple AI features to its ColorOS New Year Edition update in China.

Making the announcement, the company highlighted that the Oppo AI Center will be its dedicated research and development wing that will focus on AI and its application. It will also bring a broader range of user-centric AI products and features for users globally. This hints that Oppo might launch dedicated AI hardware similar to Humane’s AI Pin and Rabbit R1.

While this will be a long-term development by the company, in the short term, Oppo is bringing new AI features to its Reno 11 series, which include the vanilla Reno 11 and the Reno 11 Pro. Not mentioning the list of features that could come to the smartphone, it revealed that the AI Eraser tool, which can remove unwanted objects and people from an image’s background, will be added to the series. The Chinese brand also highlighted that the AI features will arrive globally within the second quarter of 2024, which ends in June.

“Following feature phones and smartphones, next-gen AI Smartphones will represent the third major transformative stage in the mobile phone industry. In the era of AI Smartphones, both the mobile phone industry and user experience will witness revolutionary changes,” said Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer of Oppo.

Additionally, Oppo also outlined the four important pillars of an ideal AI-ready smartphone. It highlighted efficiency in using computational resources to meet the needs of generative AI, self-learning capabilities, and multimodal content generation abilities. The company stated that AI smartphones should also be aware of the physical world in real time through various sensors to understand users as well as their environment.

Finally, the company also delved deeper into its own AI stack. In January, the Oppo Find X7 series was launched, where it added AI features for the first time. Explaining the language model behind the AI, the smartphone maker revealed that it used its in-house AndesGPT which comprises 180 billion parameters. The AI model was built keeping dialogue enhancement, personalisation, and cloud-device collaboration in mind.

Oppo Reno 12, Oppo Reno 12 Pro Key Specifications Leaked; Could Get 50-Megapixel Telephoto Camera: Report

Oppo launched the Oppo Reno 11 and the Oppo Reno 11 Pro less than a month ago. Now, a new report claims to reveal the key specifications of its successor, the Oppo Reno 12 series. The details reportedly come from an internal document leak, which claims that the smartphone series could sport a 50-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. The document also mentions that the handsets could be launched in June 2024. The report, however, does not mention the price of the devices.

The alleged leaked document was obtained by MSPowerUser, which reported the key specifications of both the phones. Interestingly, the Oppo Reno 12 Pro is said to be equipped with a chipset named ‘MediaTek Dimension 9200′, with the technical name MTK DX2. However, that code refers to the MediaTek Dimensity 9200. In contrast, the vanilla Oppo Reno 12 could run on a chipset named MKT 24M, which does not match any existing processor by the company. We, at Gadgets 360, were not able to access the alleged document or verify any of its claims.

As per the report, the Oppo Reno 12 Pro could feature a 6.7-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and curved edges on the rear glass back. The smartphone might sport a triple rear camera unit, led by a 50-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). Other cameras include an 8-megapixel sensor and a 50-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.

On the front, it could get a 50-megapixel selfie camera with autofocus. The alleged document claims that the handset will get 12GB of RAM and two inbuilt storage variants of 256GB and 512GB. It could be backed by a 5,000mAh battery, with 67W charging support. The document also mentions an IP65 rating.

In contrast, the vanilla Oppo Reno 12 might get a 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Just like the display specifications, the smartphone reportedly gets the same camera unit as the Pro variant. However, one difference is that the front camera will not have autofocus, as per the report. The handset could feature 12GB RAM along with 256GB inbuilt storage. A 5,000mAh battery, with 67W charging support, could back the device.

Based on the leak, the only two differences between the Oppo Reno 12 and the Oppo Reno 12 Pro appear to be the chipset and autofocus feature in the front camera. Another piece of information that reportedly came from the document was that the smartphones could be launched in June 2024. However, it must be said that it is very early into the development cycle of the Oppo Renno 11 series successor, and a lot might change by the time the handsets are launched.

Oppo, Nokia Resolve All Pending Patent Disputes via Cross Licencing Deal

Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia said on Wednesday it had signed a 5G patent cross-licencing deal with Chinese device maker Oppo that resolves patent litigation between the companies.

Nokia has been involved in legal disputes with several Chinese tech firms, including Oppo and Vivo, over patent payments. The Finnish group recently signed an agreement with Chinese smartphone maker Honor.

“Under the agreement Oppo will make royalty payments, along with catch-up payments to cover the periods of non-payment,” Nokia said in a statement. “The agreement resolves all pending patent litigation between the parties, in all jurisdictions.”

OP Corporate Bank analyst Kimmo Stenvall said investors had expected the parties to reach an agreement “sooner or later”.

Nokia’ shares were roughly flat at 1049 GMT (4:19pm IST).

Inderes analyst Atte Riikola said it was good uncertainty was now lifted about the timing of the deal, after the process had taken longer than expected.

Nokia in December warned it would not meet its financial outlook for 2023, saying talks over unspecified licence renewals would continue into this year.

Riikola said he expected Nokia to soon reach an agreement also with Vivo.

Apple Tops Samsung in Global Smartphone Shipments for First Time Since 2010: IDC

Apple surpassed Samsung to ship the most smartphones in 2023, shows a new report by market research firm IDC. It’s the first time the Cupertino-based tech giant has overtaken Samsung in worldwide smartphone shipments since 2010. Apple’s rise comes on the heels of the increasing popularity of premium iPhone models and aggressive trade-in offers. Global smartphone shipments dropped 3.2 percent year-on-year (YoY) in 2023. However, the last quarter of 2023 saw 8.5 percent year-on-year growth, indicating an expected recovery in 2024. Xiaomi is in a close third spot and other Chinese smartphone brands including Oppo and Transsion Holdings round up the top five slots.

According to analyst firm IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, global smartphone shipments dropped 3.2 percent YoY to 1.17 billion units in 2023 due to a difficult macroeconomic environment and elevated inventory. The fourth quarter of 2023 saw 8.5 percent year-over-year growth and 326.1 million shipments.

For the first time, Apple topped global smartphone sales outpacing Samsung and other Android phone makers. The iPhone maker enjoyed a 20.1 percent market share last year by shipping 234.6 million units. The South Korean smartphone brand shipped 226.6 million units and grabbed 19.4 percent market share. Xiaomi took the third spot by shipping 145.9 million units with a 12.5 percent market share.

Oppo and Transsion came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Oppo shipped 103.1 million units and got an 8.8 percent market share, while Transsion shipped 94.9 million smartphones and received an 8.1 percent market share.

In the last quarter of 2023, Apple led the market with a 24.7 percent market share, followed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Transsion, and Vivo in the top five places. IDC notes that the last time Samsung was not on top of the smartphone market was 13 years ago in 2010. Apple’s performance is attributed to the increasing trend of premium devices and interest-free financing plans.

“While we saw some strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team research director Nabila Popal. “Not only is Apple the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, but also bags the number 1 spot annually for the first time ever. All this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China, its largest market” he added.

Despite the decline in global smartphone shipments in 2023, the market is expected to recover in 2024, fueled by new launches and diversification of Android players. IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers Vice President Ryan Reith opined that the overall Android space is diversifying within itself. Huawei is making inroads quickly within China, and brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and others are launching competitive devices in the higher mid-range segment. Foldables and increased discussions around AI capabilities are gaining momentum indicating competitive market trends ahead.
