OnePlus Open Foldable Phone Tipped to Feature Same Form Factor as Oppo Find N2; Colours Options Surface Online

OnePlus Open — the Shezhen-based phone maker’s first foldable smartphone — is expected to make its debut next month, and specifications of the upcoming folding handset have now surfaced online. Various reports and leaks over the past few weeks have hinted at the specifications and features of the upcoming phone. It was previously been tipped to carry the moniker OnePlus Fold and the company reportedly considered several other names for the handset. It has now been tipped to feature a design similar to that of the Oppo Find N2 which was released in December last year.

Tipster Max Jambor (@MaxJmb) claims that the OnePlus Open will launch with a periscope lens with 3x optical zoom and that the Hasselblad-branded camera units will occupy a lot of space on the handset. He added that the phone is likely to resemble the Oppo Find N2, the book-style foldable, that was released last year. The OnePlus Open will launch in Black and Green colour options, Jambor claims.

The first foldable from OnePlus is tipped to be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC paired with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of inbuilt storage. It is also said to sport a 7.8-inch 2K AMOLED primary display and a 6.3-inch AMOLED cover screen, both with a refresh rate of 120Hz.

For optics, the OnePlus Open is expected to include a 50-megapixel sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 48-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens, and a 32-megapixel sensor with a periscope lens at the back. It is also likely to sport two 32-megapixel front camera sensors.

The Oppo Find N2 was launched in China last year, priced at CNY 7,999 (roughly Rs. 95,000) for the base 12GB + 256GB variant. It is offered in Cloud White, Pine Green, and Plain Black (translated) colour options. It comes with a 7.6-inch WUSXGA (1,792 x 1,920 pixels) AMOLED main display and a 5.54-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,120 pixels) AMOLED cover panel.

The foldable phone from Oppo is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC paired with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 inbuilt storage. It comes with a 50-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 48-megapixel wide-angle shooter, a telephoto lens at the back and a 32-megapixel sensor in the front.

Global Foldable Smartphone Shipment Projected to Hit 18.5 Million Units in 2023: Report

Annual global shipment of foldable smartphones will jump to 18.5 million units in 2023 compared to 12.8 million units in 2022, as per a recent report by market research firm Trendforce. With this trend, the market for hinges in foldable OLED smartphones is also increasing and it will reach $500 million (roughly Rs. 4,085 crore) this year. Foldable smartphones currently consist of teardrop-shaped hinges and U-shaped hinges and KH Vatech and S-connect are the key players in the sector. The foldable smartphone market includes flip and fold devices and the space is currently dominated by Samsung. The South Korean company last year introduced Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 as its latest models in its foldable lineup.

The report by TrendForce said that the worldwide annual foldable smartphone shipments that include both flip and fold form factors will touch 18.5 million units in 2023. In the last year, 12.8 million units were shipped globally. As per the data shared by the firm, Samsung enjoyed the lion’s share of the foldable smartphone space, with a market share of 82 percent last year. Increasing foldable handset sales are also elevating the market for hinges and value of the global market for hinges used in foldable OLED smartphones will rise by 14.6 percent year on year to reach above the level of $500 million for 2023.

Teardrop-shaped and U-shaped hinges are popularly used in foldable smartphones and Samsung uses the latter. Currently, KH Vatech and S-connect are providing hinges for the South Korean brand. But going forward, TrendForce predicts that Samsung will diversify its hinge suppliers to reduce expenses. Amphenol and Asia Vital Components (AVC) are the suppliers of teardrop-shaped hinges. Other smartphone brands using these hinges grabbed a total market share of 20 percent in 2022.

With the increasing demand for foldable handsets, brands are looking for light and strong composite materials for hinges to lower the device’s weight. TrendForce mentioned that Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 2 features carbon fibre composite and has a thickness of 11.2mm when folded. The Honor Magic Vs and Oppo Find N2 also use the same materials.

The firm also noted that panel makers are also involved in the development of foldable smartphone hinges. The CSOT has unveiled a “semi-set” production flow that integrates an OLED display module with the required hinges, bringing a one-piece component. These types of solutions will accelerate the product development cycle and ensure the optimisation of the product.

According to TrendForce, fold crease is the issue that is most brought up by users of foldable devices. The report points out that the display of a foldable smartphone does not completely fold flat when closed. Based on the hinge design, the foldable display will either turn into a “U” or a water-drop style design. The latter has a larger allowable screen perimeter than a U-shaped hinge, and the corresponding crease is less visible.

OnePlus 11, Oppo Find N2 Tipped to Feature Same 50-Megapixel Triple Rear Camera Setup

OnePlus 11 is believed to be in the works and may arrive as the successor to the OnePlus 10 Pro in China by the end of this year. Meanwhile, Oppo is supposedly working on its next foldable flagship smartphone — the Oppo Find N2 — which could also debut around the same time in China. A reliable tipster has now hinted that these two smartphones may boast the same camera configuration. They are expected to feature a 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup.

According to a post by tipster Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus 11 and Oppo Find N2 may sport a triple rear camera setup, including a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary sensor, a 48-megapixel Sony IMX581 ultra-wide lens, and a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom.

The tipster further claims that the Oppo‘s foldable Find N2 handset may come with optical image stabilisation (OIS), whereas it is uncertain whether OnePlus will offer the same on the OnePlus 11. Both companies are yet to delve into the details regarding these smartphones.

Alleged specifications of the Oppo Find N2 surfaced recently via leaked screenshots of a testing unit. This foldable smartphone is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. The Oppo foldable may feature a MariSilicon X imaging neural processing unit (NPU). Its display is likely to offer a refresh rate of 120Hz.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 11 has been tipped to feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, which is supposed to offer a 2K resolution. Under the hood, this smartphone could pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Rumours suggest that it might arrive in two configurations — 8GB RAM + 128GB storage and 16GB RAM + 256GB storage. This OnePlus handset is also likely to get a 5,000mAh battery supporting 100W fast charging.
