Opera ‘Carmen’ will be remade as a film — inside the dance-fueled changes

Bizet’s “Carmen.” The 19th century’s political unrest, social class, power struggle, murder, scandal, gender, race, now fits our 2lst century. Result? Rejiggering the opera as a film.

Director’s Benjamin Millepied — choreographer, plus husband of Oscar winner Natalie Portman who played a ballerina in “Black Swan.”

Tall, handsome, French, his sneakers were spotless.

“My film’s set in Mexico, a country in chaos. I began this career as a child. My mother, a dancer, had some link. A love of music and expression, dance is no financially rewarding career — only fulfilling.

“Took me six years to write this. Drama told through music — like ‘West Side Story.’ I reinvented her. More freedom. She’s not just an object of desire.”

She’s independent. Mother’s murdered. Illegal border guard kills others in her group. Standoff. Escape to LA. Police close in. For the rest see the movie.

“Onstage, dance, music, lights, costumes come together. A single experience. I approached this same way I approach dance, the language of dreams, the mystical and the earthly. My conscious and subconscious.”

Oddity No. 1. The screening drew Mikhail Baryshnikov who kindly introduced himself to me. Not sure why since last we met he was sitting at my kitchen table.

Telling royal tales

Oddity No. 2: 2,000 years late Cleopatra’s ready for her close-up. Jada Pinkett Smith narrates the series.

Jada: “Don’t often get stories about black queens. That was important for me, my daughter, my community. Cleopatra’s displayed as sexual, excessive, corrupt, yet she was a strategist, intellect, fought to protect her kingdom.

“Her heritage is debated. We’ll dive into her history.”

“Queen Cleopatra” premieres in Queens May 10. Netflix. Grab a barge. Watch it.

Aided and a’booked

Long back I reported: “Melissa DeRosa, Gov. Cuomo’s former aide, has inked a tell-all book.”

Immediate denials. No-no-no. Madam Adams knows not what she burbles about.

Well . . . HARK! Comes now news that truth-misser Melissa’s written a dump-all.

The Sanitation Department has been placed on alert.

Learning history

Oddity No. 3: Roger Smith was a “77 Sunset Strip” actor married to Ann-Margret. Now gone. I’ve just had news from some outlet which has invoked the phrase “Who the F - - k Is Roger Smith?!”

It alleges knowing Time Warner’s Steve Ross, Schwarzenegger, Spielberg, hit on by Grace Kelly, Menendez trial testifier, opera subtitles creator and dishes on now gone Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Gerald Ford.

Just letting everyone know if in case should they hear from him.

Morning regalia

Comes an invite from Emma Wade-Smith OBE, His Majesty’s Consul General here, to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III on May 6. It says: “We will livestream it at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall. Doors open 5:45 a.m. The Coronation starts 6:00 a.m.” Great. Hope Roger Smith knows.

I’m off Monday and Tuesday. So Hail Britannia, plus only in New York, kids, only in New York.

Opera Browser for iOS Gets Free Inbuilt VPN, Allows Users to Browse Web Privately

Opera added a free inbuilt VPN (virtual private network) in its mobile browser for Android back in 2019. Years later, the company is now rolling out the free VPN feature on Opera browser for iOS as well. This would allow iPhone and iPad users to browse the Web privately without any additional extensions. With the latest addition, Opera claims that it became the first Web browser to offer a free inbuilt VPN across Android, Mac, Linux, Windows, and iOS platforms. Opera for iOS is also getting other upgrades including the Bookmarks feature with Speed Dial and a new Live Score.

Opera on Wednesday announced the addition of free VPN to the Opera browser for iOS via a blogpost. This service debuted in its mobile browser for Android back in 2019. The latest update allows iPhone and iPad users to access the Web while ensuring online security and anonymity by creating a private network from a public Internet connection.

iOS users can turn on the VPN from the hamburger menu on the homepage. This is claimed to encrypt VPN traffic and keep the IP address private. The new native VPN service is free to use and does not come with any attached log management condition. Also, there are no additional extensions required to avail the service.

Opera claims that it keeps the anonymity of the user and ensures that the browser does not collect any personal data or information related to browsing history or originating network address of users.

The free VPN is already available on different platforms including Opera for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android. With the latest addition, Opera states that it has become the first Web browser to provide VPN across all major platforms free of charge.

The new feature is currently available to some users for early access, and the company is expected to complete the full rollout in the coming weeks.

Besides the free VPN service, the Opera browser for iOS is also getting multiple new features. A Bookmarks feature for organising online activities is also rolling out. It comes with a Speed Dial facility that allows users to instantly access pages or sites. Also, there is a new Live Score feature that would display scoreboards of the day’s matches on the browser’s homepage.

Opera for iOS also offers a Fast Action Button that helps to organise all navigation tools within a thumb’s reach. My Flow enables file sharing between phones, tablets, and computers and the browser’s Crypto Wallet allows users to keep track of their digital assets at all times.

Brave Web 3 Browser Adds Solana Support, Improves BAT Utility With Latest Update

Privacy-first browser, Brave has unveiled its desktop browser version 1.39, which comes with Solana integration in a bid to improve Web 3 access for users. Before the announcement, Brave Browser had a linked wallet and a robust suite of tools for both novices and experts. Adding support for Solana means that users will now be able to enjoy lower fees and faster transactions. Brave joins Opera, which made a similar move when it integrated with Solana, Polygon, StarkEx, and other blockchain ecosystems in March.

The plans for the integration were first shared in November 2021. Using desktop version 1.39, Brave Wallet users can transact SOL and SPL tokens directly from their Brave Wallet. Also, they will be able to purchase other cryptocurrencies with fiat through its integration with Ramp. To crown it all, the platform’s native token, Basic Attention Token (BAT) has also been transmuted into an SPL token.

Confirming the development, CEO and co-founder of Brave, Brendan Eich said, “As the leading Web 3 browser, Brave is now providing integration with Solana’s blockchain so that users and developers can seamlessly transact on their fast, low-fee network.”

According to the announcement, the Solana integration is but one move among many others to improve web 3 ecosystem access.

The firm also announced its integration with Ramp. The Ramp integration allows users to directly buy crypto within the Brave Wallet. According to Greg McEwan, Head of Marketing at Ramp, the integration will shorten the “painful process of converting fiat currencies to crypto.”

Likewise, Brave announced its partnership with the leading Solana NFT marketplace, Magic Eden. Using BAT tokens, Brave wallet users will soon be able to purchase NFTs directly from their wallets. Founder of Magic Eden, Sidney Zhang, stated, “The integration of Brave Wallet in our marketplace will further drive the ecosystem forward.”

Asides from this, Brendan Eich of Brave noted the firm will provide decentralised app (dApp) support in a future release.

Opera’s Web3-Focussed Crypto Browser Now Supports BNB Chain to Enable Asset Trading, dApps

Opera web browser has added support for the BNB blockchain on its ‘crypto-friendly’ platform. The integration will allow Opera users to buy and sell the Binance token and store their assets in its in-built crypto wallet. The integration will also open access to decentralised apps (dApps) such as PancakeSwap, 1inch, and BiSwap among others. As per Opera, this partnership with Binance blockchain will escalate the Web3 adoption among more people. The web browser team has also released an official update on the Opera blog.

Opera boasts 350 million monthly active users globally, making this a partnership that has the potential to take Web3 adoption to the next level,” the blog post said. “Onboarding to crypto and interacting with dApps, gaming, cryptocurrency, and metaverse platforms on Opera’s browser is customised for new adopters and experienced Web3 users alike.”

Web3 is the next leg of Internet as we know today. Largely based on the blockchain network, Web3 will support 3D experiences such as the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) among others.

The Norwegian platform, last month, released the beta version of its Web3 browser for iOS devices. It first announced its crypto browser in January.

In March, Opera announced its plans of incorporating more blockchain networks in its in-built crypto wallet. These include Solana, Polygon, StarkEx, Ronin, Celo, Nervos DAO, IXO, and Bitcoin.

Presently, Ether is already supported by the crypto-focused browser’s crypto wallet.

“Opera continues to streamline mainstream access to Web3 and beyond. With the Opera Crypto Browser, existing users of BNB Chain dApps and token holders alike can now join the hundreds of millions of Windows, Android, and Mac users worldwide in having unique Web3 access functionality at their fingertips,” the platform noted.

Opera’s crypto browser also displays a special ‘crypto corner’ that shows related information on the home page including crypto updates, crypto asset price reporting, crypto events as well as token airdrops.
