Reliance Jio to Sign $1.7 Billion Deal With Nokia for Purchase of 5G Network Equipment: Report

India’s Reliance Jio Infocomm is likely to sign a contract worth $1.7 billion (roughly Rs. 14,016 crore) with Nokia this week to purchase 5G network equipment, the Economic Times reported on Thursday, citing people aware of the matter.

The contract could be signed as early as Thursday in Helsinki, Finland, where Nokia is headquartered, the report added. Jio and Nokia did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for a comment.

The telecom of arm of Reliance Industries snapped up airwaves worth $11 billion (roughly Rs. 90,600 crore) in a 5G spectrum auction last August and had launched 5G services in several cities. It is also working with Alphabet’s Google to launch a budget 5G smartphone.

The Economic Times said that HSBC, JP Morgan and Citigroup are among those backing Jio’s 5G-related purchases, while European export credit agency Finnvera will be issuing guarantees to the lenders to extend offshore loans to Jio.

Swedish telecommunication company Ericsson had in October last year, announced a partnership with Jio to build a 5G standalone network in India.

Earlier this week, Jio announced the launch of a 4G-feature phone in an attempt to reach those who have not yet migrated to smartphones, although analysts said the move was unlikely to disrupt the Indian telecom market. Back in August last year, Jio emerged as the biggest spender in India’s $19 billion (roughly Rs. 1.5 lakh crore) 5G spectrum auction, with the top telco player winning airwaves worth $11 billion (roughly Rs. Rs. 87,000 crore).

In December 2022, Counterpoint Research said that India’s 5G smartphone shipments will exceed that of 4G shipments by the end of 2023, driven by the mass adoption of the high-speed network and the rise in the sale of handsets in the lower-price bands.

5G data speed in India is expected to be about 10 times faster than that of 4G, with the network seen as vital for emerging technologies like self-driving cars and artificial intelligence.

Nokia Pure UI Introduced, Will Not Be Available on Nokia Smartphones

Nokia, earlier this year, changed its logo to a more modern minimalistic design, after many years of sporting a familiar logo. The brand has recently launched several smartphones, including Nokia C32, Nokia C22, Nokia G22, Nokia C12 and Nokia C12 Pro. Now, Nokia has announced Pure UI, a new user interface for its forthcoming B2B and enterprise products. Notably, the Pure UI will not be available on Nokia smartphones manufactured by HMD Global. The brand claims that the style is meant to be consistent, versatile, and future-proof, and it has a clean, minimalistic appearance. There are several elements, beginning with layouts and recommendations, that define the whole appearance. The Nokia Pure typeface, which will be utilised throughout the UI, is a key component of the new look.

The Pure UI introduced new icons based on different strokes, the width of which can be adjusted to meet the display specifications and functionality of a particular device. Smooth animations are also used when an element must draw the attention of the user.

In addition, Nokia has created basic features that developers can use to quickly create consistent-looking screens. A dark mode is also supported in the UI, with components and symbols adapting their styles accordingly.

Nokia Pure UI claims to offer robust elements that can be used to develop complex web-based dashboards. The interface is intended to be scaled from small wrist-worn screens to large wall-mounted display panels.

Nokia C99 Specifications and Price Surface Online, Tipped to Debut in Q3 2023

Nokia C99 is rumoured to be in the works, according to details leaked online. The company is said to be working on a flagship smartphone dubbed the Nokia “Magic Box”, that could sport a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED screen and use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm’s latest high-end SoC. This smartphone is also said to feature a 144-megapixel triple camera setup and support for 180W fast charging. However, the company is yet to announce any plans to launch such a handset.

Nokia C99 price in India (rumoured)

According to details shared by Twitter user Chandragupta Saurabh (@ParasmeSaurabh), the Finnish smartphone manufacturer could launch the Nokia C99 in India in Q3 2023 priced at around Rs. 45,000.

However, keeping in mind the leaked specifications, it appears very unlikely that the purported handset would be sold at such a low price point. This smartphone is likely to compete with flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and the Xiaomi 13 Pro in India.

Nokia C99 specifications (rumoured)

The yet-to-be-announced Nokia C99 may be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, paired with up to 16GB of RAM, according to details shared by the user. The handset may sport a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 7 protection.

For optics, the purported Nokia C99 might be equipped with a Zeiss-optimised triple rear camera setup comprising a 144-megapixel primary camera, a 64-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera, and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera.

This rumoured handset could also be equipped with support for 180W fast charging, as per details shared by the Twitter user. However, as previously mentioned, there is currently no word from Nokia on any plans to launch a new C-series smartphone with flagship specifications in India or in global markets, so it is advisable to take these claims — especially the rumoured price — with a pinch of salt.
