Guns & Gulaabs, Starring Dulquer Salmaan and Rajkummar Rao, Out Today on Netflix

Guns & Gulaabs, the new retro-style crime drama from Raj & DK, is dropping today on Netflix. Serving as an ode to Bollywood in the mid-90s, the black comedy series blends romance and pulp comedy into a fine paste, where a wrench turning into an instrument of death sets off a chain reaction of wild events in the unpredictable town of Gulaabganj. Marking the duo’s first Netflix project, it’s worth mentioning that Guns & Gulaab’s spent an egregiously long time in production — having dropped a teaser in September, only to go radio silent until earlier this month. It can be assumed that the creators were busy with Amazon Prime Video’s Farzi, but this show wasn’t mentioned in Netflix’s release 2023 release slate either, casting doubt among fans.

“This time we went back to our favourite territory… embracing the storytelling style of our earlier films (99, Shor In The City). And somewhere along this process, we found ourselves creating a genre mash in a pulpy, retro style,” Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK said in a prepared statement. The pair describe Guns & Gulaabs as a ‘quirky story,’ one that’s filled to the brim with nostalgic music and references, conveyed through its ensemble cast of misfits who try to make a name in a cartel-run town rampant with gang riots. First up, we’ve got Rajkummar Rao (Monica, O My Darling) as Paana Tipu, a lovesick mechanic, who gets roped into a life of crime when he lets his inner demon out — killing intruders by stabbing a wrench down their throats.

The show reunites Rao with his The White Tiger co-star Adarsh Gourav, who plays Chhota Ganchi, the reluctant heir to a drug empire, hell-bent on making his father proud. And since no crime drama is complete without a cop, we’ve got Dulquer Salmaan (Sita Ramam) stepping into the boots of Officer Arjun Varma. Bored by his mundane lifestyle, the honest cop turns to a life of chaos, looking to make a quick buck or even better — earn a promotion. The easiest way to achieve that is by toppling the drug kingpin, and so he teams up with Chhota Ganchi to make a five percent bonus from an unorganised heist the latter has planned. Amidst all this, an overly goofy gangster named ‘4 Cut Aatmaram’ (Gulshan Devaiah) is running loose in the town, known for killing — or rather, cleansing — souls, with merely four stabs of a switchblade.

Mimicking motorcycle chase sequences from old Bollywood and over-exaggerated action, Guns & Gulaabs also unfolds a revenge story, heartbreak, and a taste of sweet innocence through the eyes of three schoolmates. The series also stars the late Satish Kaushik (Mr. India) as the drug lord father Ganchi, frequent Raj & DK collaborator Ashmith Kunder (The Family Man), and Pooja Gor (The Verdict – State vs Nanavati).

Guns & Gulaabs is out today on Netflix.

Kohrra to The Witcher Season 3: Top Movies and TV Series to Watch on Netflix Right Now

Despite the public outcry, the changes to Netflix’s password-sharing system have simply helped the streamer grow in power, with nearly 6 million new members joining the platform recently. With the ongoing Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strikes in full effect, I don’t really blame them for it, given the streamer is one of the few studios that’s best prepared for the oncoming content drought with a robust, long-running slate. Coming to this weekend, the slate is led by renowned favourites such as The Witcher season 3 and Bird Box Barcelona, as well as new Indian originals such as Kohrra, a procedural investigation thriller helmed by Paatal Lok creator Sudip Sharma.

Every week, Netflix compiles a list of its most trending content, from compelling dramas to more action-oriented affairs such as Hidden Strike, the new pair-up between Jackie Chan and John Cena. Of course, content such as Lust Stories 2 is going to rank high up on the list for expected reasons, though I was surprised to see the Randeep Hooda-led crime-thriller series CAT up on there, apparently having spent six weeks among India’s Top 10 list. You can check out the entire hierarchy by visiting the official website, but for now, let’s focus on some of the best films and TV series you could binge-watch on Netflix right now.

One Piece to Ahsoka, The Biggest Web Series Releasing in July

Maamannan

It’s always interesting to see comic actors like Vadivelu take on intense roles, with Maamannan putting him in the shoes of the titular veteran statesman and his son Veera (Udhayanidhi Stalin), who are pulled into a violent power struggle when a cold-blooded politician charts his rise to power. Fahadh Faasil plays the vengeful and entitled Rathnavelu, Salem’s district secretary, who discriminates against people based on caste, often at loggerheads over political shifts with his rival, insisting how even progressive ideals would fall prey to casteism in time. The film also stars Keerthy Suresh (Dasara) as an educator for the less privileged, and Lal (2018) as the fictional Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The Witcher Season 3: Vol. 2

Over the years, The Witcher series took a nosedive from being a highly-praised fantasy epic, to gradually veering from the source material to focus on its world-building and politics. In what serves as the last hurrah for Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, it was revealed that the mysterious mage Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) had been sowing discord across the Continent. Our trio of heroes Geralt, Sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan) must now face hordes of monsters and mages to thwart evil, as the stone-cold witcher slowly comes to terms with his feelings.

Hidden Strike

Hidden Strike puts iconic death-defying actor Jackie Chan and WWE legend John Cena on the same team, to escort a group of civilians across the Iraqi roads after an oil refinery gets attacked by mercenaries. Tonally, it’s something along the lines of the Rush Hour films, a buddy-comedy filled with endless banter and over-the-top action sequences, as our heroes dodge RPGs, blast rooftops during old-fashioned standoffs, and fail to understand the simple mechanics of a hand-grenade. Scott Waugh — best known for Need for Speed — directs the film, which also stars Game of Thrones veteran Pilou Asbæk as the mercenaries’ leader Owen Paddock.

Bird Box Barcelona

The events of Bird Box Barcelona run parallel to the ones in the US, which you might have already seen in the original Sandra Bullock-led version. Threatened by a mysterious force that has begun annihilating the human population by forcing them to kill themselves, a father and daughter — Sebastián (Mario Casas) and Anna (Alejandra Howard) — venture through the desolate streets of the titular Spanish city, in hopes of finding a safe haven. But when they run into a group of other blindfolded strangers, they learn of another imminent threat that seems more formidable than the unseen creatures. Helmed by returning directors Àlex and David Pastor, the movie also enlists Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) and Diego Calva (Babylon) in the cast lineup.

Kohrra

When an NRI Punjabi named Paul is found murdered just before his arranged marriage in the countryside of Jagrana, Punjab, two police officers — Amarpal Jasjit Garundi (Barun Sobti) and Balbir Singh (Suvinder Vicky) — must work together to unravel the mystery, which opens a pandora’s box of a dysfunctional family’s secrets, deceit, and infidelity. To make matters worse, the victim’s close friend Liam (Ivantiy Novak), a British national, goes missing, prompting an investigation process more serious than regular routine checks. Kohrra explores the customs of the NRI community which makes up a sizeable population in greater Punjab, in addition to themes of masculine ego.

Choona Trailer: Jimmy Shergill Is an Aspiring CM in Netflix Heist Series Featuring an Astrological Twist

Choona, the Lucknow-set heist comedy series, just got a trailer. Netflix dropped some new footage for its Jimmy Shergill-led (A Wednesday) series, which traces a revenge drama targeting a corrupt and highly-superstitious politician Shukla, as an unlikely group of six bands together to take his empire down. Much of the narrative’s direction pivots around astrology — the alignment of planets and stars — as that’s how Shukla determines his day-to-day activities, including the right time to commit some form of violence. Pushpendra Nath Misra — best known for Taj Mahal 1989 — serves as the writer-director for the satirical series, which is slated to drop August 3 on Netflix.

The Choona trailer opens with a voiceover from the corrupt Shukla (Shergill) as he arrives in Lucknow, looking to overthrow the government and become the next Chief Minister. “Your stars decide your luck in politics,” he says while flaunting his fingers adorned with all kinds of gems. “And on the strength of these stars, Shukla is flying high.” He likes comparing himself to a ‘Calculator,’ having planned every minute detail beforehand, ensuring the planets are always aligned in his favour. As you would imagine, Shukla loves taking advantage of the needy, even asking one of them to self-immolate before him to show their devotion. “We want to emotionally torture Shukla,” a voiceover says, while we’re treated to visuals of him harming the people who dared utter a word against him.

When word gets out that Shukla is to receive Rs. 300 crore in cash — presumably by illegal means — the unlikely group unite on a mission to steal it and destroy his political position. The heist team includes an astrologer (Atul Srivastava), a love interest (Monika Panwar), a mute man (Chandan Roy), a shape-shifting informer (Namit Das), a small-time criminal and student leader (Aashim Gulati), a drunkard (Vikram Kochhar), and a demoted police officer (Gyanendra Tripathi).

With a common enemy and the prized amount climbing to Rs. 600 crore, all that remains is finding a way to infiltrate Shukla’s party office. “Have you ever seen the party office?” the unnamed drunkard — once a successful contractor — asks the group. “They have 10 armed police officers. There are 100 goon-ish party workers, there are CCTV cameras everywhere, and on the top floor sits Shukla.” While it does seem like an impossible task, the politician can be fooled or applied choona through astrology, essentially clearing the path for our heroes — or rather, robbers.

“There’s no way we’ll get away with stealing 800 crore rupees,” the student leader says, as the Choona trailer blends into a montage of action sequences involving local goons, cash money floating around, some cheap-looking VFX of planetary bodies moving around, and thrilling chase sequences. As for the getaway plan, one of them suggests that the drunkard jump off a window and descend down a zipline, to which he gives a quick-witted response saying, “Hey bhai, I’m not Tom Cruise.”

All episodes of Choona are out August 3 on Netflix.

Netflix Plans to Cut Spending by $300 Million; No Layoffs Expected: Report

Netflix plans to cut its spending by $300 million (nearly Rs. 2,465 crore) this year, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Company leaders urged staffers to be judicious with their spending, including in relation to hiring, but said there would be no hiring freeze or additional layoffs, according to the report.

Netflix declined to comment. Shares of the company were down nearly 2 percent in early trading.

Last month, Netflix beat estimates for first quarter but offered a lighter-than-expected forecast, demonstrating the challenges it faces in pursuit of growth.

The company said it shifted a wider launch of a plan to crack down on unsanctioned password sharing into the second quarter to make improvements.

As the streaming video pioneer faces signs of market saturation, it is exploring new ways to make money, such as password crackdown and a new ad-supported service.

Netflix in June also laid off 300 employees, or about 4 percent of its workforce, in the second round of job cuts aimed at lowering costs.

The company is also facing some trouble in India as the government here is seeking to tax the OTT platform for income earned from streaming services in the country, the Economic Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

In a draft order, income tax authorities attributed an income of about Rs. 550 million rupees to Netflix’s Indian permanent establishment (PE) in the assessment year 2021-22, the report added.

Tax officials reasoned that the US firm had some employees and infrastructure from the parent entity on secondment in India to support its streaming services, leading to a PE and tax liability, the publication reported.

Netflix Plans in India Are Among the Cheapest Anywhere in 2023, Switzerland Most Expensive: Report

Netflix plans in India are among the most affordable in 2023, compared to other countries around the world where the global streaming service is available. As per a new report, Netflix pricing in India is considerably cheaper than most other countries, where plan pricing starts at considerably higher prices based on direct currency conversion rates. This is because Netflix sets its pricing according to purchasing power, based on average income levels of the platform’s typical user base and how much a customer might be willing to pay to subscribe to the premium streaming service.

As per a report and analysis of Netflix plan pricing in 245 countries by VPNWiki, India is among the most affordable countries to watch Netflix in 2023. Netflix plans in India start at Rs. 149 per month for the Mobile-only plan, going up to Rs. 649 per month for the Premium plan which offers access to content on up to four devices simultaneously and Ultra-HD HDR resolution for all supported content.

Where is Netflix cheaper?

Notably, only a handful of countries have lower starting prices for Netflix than India. Pakistan and Kenya have lower starting prices, while Turkey, Argentina, and Colombia have lower average pricing across plans. Mobile-only plans are not offered everywhere, and were introduced for price-sensitive markets such as India, in order to offer a lower starting point for potential subscribers to sign up for Netflix. These are far lower than the global average pricing of $6.43 (approximately Rs. 530) to $13.03 (approximately Rs. 1,070) per month.

As the name suggests, with the Mobile plan, Netflix can only be accessed from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Some countries also offer access to an ad-supported basic plan for Netflix which is a bit more affordable than the ad-free basic plan, although this option is not available in India. Importantly, all Netflix content is available to all paid subscribers, regardless of which plan they are on.

Where is Netflix more expensive?

On the other end, Netflix is the most expensive in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, based on the higher purchasing power in those countries and the willingness to pay more for Netflix. In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Netflix prices range from 11.90CHF (approximately Rs. 1,036) to 24.90CHF (approximately Rs. 2,168) per month – considerably higher than pricing for the same plans in India (Rs. 199 for Basic to Rs. 649 for Premium, per month).

Other countries where Netflix is among the most expensive globally are Israel, the US, and Denmark. Netflix prices are generally higher in Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Oceania, although many of these countries now have ad-supported plans to bring down the starting price of Netflix plans.

Netflix recently announced more stringent measures to curb password sharing, where multiple individuals use a single Netflix account to save costs. This has not rolled out in India yet, but users can expect some form of control to be put in place in 2023, since Netflix likely sees this as considerable lost revenue. The service also recently cut prices in some countries, in an effort to retain subscribers amid strong competition.

Netflix’s Class Pits Poor Scholarship Students Against the Elite in an Exclusive High School: Trailer and Release Date Announced

Class, a Hindi-language adaptation of the Spanish series Elite, just got a trailer and release date. Netflix has confirmed that the young-adult drama, which raises questions about class differences and wealth, will releaseon the platform on February 3. Much like the original, the Ashim Ahluwalia (Daddy) directed adaptation pits three working-class children against the powerful elites of a prestigious international school, with the ensuing drama exposing the darker underbelly of the wealthy. Currently, there is no word on an episode count for Class.

The trailer for Class opens with a voiceover, presumably from the local cops, as we’re treated to blurry visuals of police inspecting what appears to be a dead body. “Has something like this ever happened in Hampton before?”, the voice says, suspecting the three new kids who joined the elite school recently thanks to a scholarship — Dheeraj (Piyush Khati), Balli (Cwaayal Singh), and Saba (Madhyama Segal). The Class trailer then jumps back in time to show the glamorous school — one adorned with state-of-the-art facilities and regular parties, which aren’t a common sight for these new students who hail from the grittier side of Delhi. Dheeraj describes the school as the “best and most expensive,” littered with “spoilt kids from weird families.”

“You’ll only ever get into trouble here. Be careful here, okay?”, Suhani (Anjali Siwaraman), who has taken a liking to the new students, warns Dheeraj in confidence. Throughout the Class trailer, our heroes are represented as targets of bullying, be it for their lack of knowledge of English, the way they act, or for simply existing amongst the elites. “Why do you have to give alms to every beggar,” a classmate asks Suhani, after telling Dheeraj off, to go elsewhere and not talk to her. We’re then introduced to Balram Patwal aka Balli, a passionate bodybuilder, who has no shame in taking his shirt off to impress girls in the class. “I come from Hindi medium, but my English is like Bullet Train,” he says, while the trailer gives off the impression that he eventually makes it among the modelling team for the school. Understandably, the other kids grow jealous.

The Class trailer then veers into a darker side, bringing in the rowdy Neeraj (Gurfateh Pirzada), Dheeraj’s friend, who tries encouraging him into stealing from the rich. “Black money is earned illegally. We should loot them, anyway,” he tells a reluctant Dheeraj, who is eventually roped into the plan. Unfortunately, things go awry, and the three new students end up becoming the prime suspects in a murder, with no one to believe in their innocence, simply because they’re from a lower class. “I wish there was someone who could beat them at their own game, and show them that we exist too,” Dheeraj says in a voiceover. “We’re of the same class.”

Earlier this month, Netflix also revealed the cast lineup for Class, which includes Ayesha Kanga as Yashika, Chayan Chopra as Dhruv, Chintan Rachchh as Faruq, Moses Koul as Sharan, Naina Bhan as Koel, and Zeyn Shaw as Veer. The series is written by a team of five — Rajesh Devraj (Gold), Kersi Khambatta (Being Cyrus), Raghav Kakkar (Faraaz), Bhaskar Hazarika (Ravening), and Kashyap Kapoor.

All episodes of Class drop February 3 on Netflix.

The Archies Movie by Zoya Akhtar Has Wrapped Up Filming, Netflix Confirms

The Archies, Netflix’s upcoming musical drama from director Zoya Akhtar (Gully Boy), has wrapped up filming. Set in the swinging 1960s, the adaptation of the globally-beloved Archie Comics adds a uniquely Indian spin to it, creating a musical experience, bubbling with “youth, rebellion, friendships, first loves and everything young adult.” Akhtar co-wrote the script with Ayesha Devitre (Gehraiyaan) and Reema Kagti — the latter also co-wrote Gully boy with Akhtar. Filming on The Archies began in April this year, and it currently does not have a release window. The film is co-produced under Akhtar’s own Tiger Baby banner and Sharad Devarajan’s Graphics India.

The initial announcement for The Archies from Netflix was met with a polarising reaction, as the characters presented in the cast showcase appeared too western, for what it’s trying to present — 1960s India. In a later interview, which featured Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater, Akhtar addressed those sentiments, stating that the adaptation is set in the Anglo-Indian community. “It’s in a magical, fictional hill station town in our country, and I mean, the town is called Riverdale, it’s fictional,” she said. For Goldwater, this would be his third Archie universe set project being turned into a Netflix adaptation, following Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Netflix’s The Archies stars Agastya Nanda as the titular redhead Archie Andrews, Suhana Khan as the pompous Veronica Lodge, Khushi Kapoor as the kind-hearted Betty, Mihir Ahuja as the huge appetite-driven Jughead (he’s wearing a flat cap instead of the character’s trademark whoopee cap), Dot, Yuvraj Menda, and Vedang Raina. Frequent Akhtar collaborator Ankur Tiwari is the music supervisor for The Archies.

Earlier this year, Zoya and her sibling, actor Farhan Akhtar (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), came together to produce Eternally Confused and Eager to Love, a comedy-drama starring Vihaan Samrat, which followed a young adult navigating through adulthood, under the guidance of his inner voice “Wiz.” Created, written, and directed by debutant Rahul Nair, all eight episodes of the show are now streaming on Netflix.

As of now, there is no release window for Netflix’s The Archies.

Vir Das Landing: New Stand-Up Special Sets December 26 Release Date on Netflix

Vir Das’ latest comedy special is headed to Netflix on December 26. First discovered on the platform’s international listings and confirmed by Gadgets 360 via the Netflix website, his upcoming stand-up special, “Vir Das: Landing,” sees the titular comedian delving deep into his childhood in India, “the perils of outrage, and finding his feet in the world.” This marks his fourth Netflix stand-up special, excluding 2020’s Outside In, where he performed online shows to a homebound audience, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. His new Netflix collaboration comes after an almost two-year break, during which he starred in Judd Apatow’s The Bubble.

Das began his partnership with Netflix in 2017, with his special Abroad Understanding, which tackled themes of nationalism, globalism, and politics in two cross-cut performances in New York and New Delhi.

The stand-up marked the first time an Indian comedian was featured on the platform’s specials list, continuing the trend of comparing cultures with the West. His other two mainline specials, Losing it and Vir Das for India, were released in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

Earlier this month, Das’s Bengaluru show had to be cancelled reportedly owing to protests accusing him of portraying India in “a bad light”. “Hey, folks. Due to unavoidable circumstances, we are pushing the Bengaluru show. New details and dates soon. Sorry for the inconvenience,” he said in an Instagram post. The live show was scheduled for November 20, but hasn’t been rescheduled since.

Vir Das: Landing drops December 26 on Netflix. It will be only the second Indian stand-up special on Netflix in 2022, following Kapil Sharma: I’m Not Done Yet back in January.

The Elephant Whisperers Release Date: Guneet Monga’s Heartfelt Documentary Out December 8 on Netflix

The Elephant Whisperers, an upcoming India-set short documentary from Netflix, just got a release date. Screened last week at the DOC NYC 2022 Film Festival in the US, the short portrays the heartwarming tale of a South Indian couple, who fall in love with an orphaned elephant Raghu, given into their care. The Tamil-language documentary releases December 8 on Netflix and marks Kartiki Gonsalves’ directorial debut. Guneet Monga and Achin Jain, best known for The Lunchbox, produce The Elephant Whisperers under the Sikhya Entertainment banner.

Set in the rural backdrops of a South Indian village, The Elephant Whisperers follows an old couple Bomman and Bellie, who devote their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, helping with its recovery and survival. What begins as a simple one-off job, soon alters their daily routine, as the gentle, but majestic creature forms a familial bond, tagging along in all activities. The 41-minute-long documentary will be available on Netflix with English subtitles and highlights the beauty of exotic wildlife and people living in the area. As evidenced by the documentary’s splash screen on the platform, caring for elephants is a generation-spanning family business, which raises the question of whether the couple’s love for Raghu is an exclusive case — since he’s orphaned.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of the making of The Elephant Whisperers and working with Kartiki Gonsalves. At Sikhya Entertainment we aim to create distinct stories and The Elephant Whisperers is one such short documentary,” producer Monga said in a prepared statement. “It is heartwarming and highlights the beautiful connection we share with not just nature but also other living beings on this planet alongside the beauty of wildlife and wild spaces in Southern India. I am elated that this story will be watched across the globe through a service like Netflix.”

Another film from the international circuit, Ariyippu, starring Kunchacko Boban and Divya Prabha, was acquired by Netflix last month. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the Malayalam movie is known as Declaration in English, and follows a struggling couple with hopes to migrate out of the country. It premiered at Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival and broke India’s 17-year-long drought in the international competition section.

The Elephant Whisperers is out December 8 on Netflix.
