Instagram Stories Adds New Stickers, Including Frames, Reveal, and More

Instagram has released a bunch of new interactive sticker options for users to use on their Stories. Instagram Stories is a popular way for sharing content on the platform, next to posting an image, video or Reel. Users can upload text, images, or video stories and may even combine elements from all these options. The new stickers are claimed to help users express themselves more creatively. One of the many features includes users being able to make stickers to use on their Instagram stories from existing photos in their albums.

Meta confirmed the new series of interactive stickers for Instagram Stories in a blog post. One of the most innovative additions is the Reveal sticker, which essentially ‘hides’ the content of the Story by blurring it. To view the full story, viewers will have to DM the poster. There is no approval from the poster needed. Once the DM is delivered to the person who posted the Story with the Reveal sticker, the viewer will be able to see all the contents of the Story.

The company is also introducing a new Add Yours Music sticker which Instagram followers of the poster can add their music of choice too. It works similarly to the Add Yours images or Reel sticker. People viewing the story can click on the sticker to post a Story with the same sticker alongside images and music of their choice.

Instagram Stories will also now have a Frames sticker option, which turns any photo into an instant Polaroid-like print. The Cutouts sticker option, true to its name, allows users to create stickers with cutouts from different images to use on Instagram Stories.

Meanwhile, Instagram also recently added a new feature to its iOS app which helps clicking and posting Stories more accessible. iOS users can now add a new lock screen widget which directly opens the Story Camera, allowing users to click a picture or shoot a video and post it as a Story, without opening the main Instagram application.

Meta recently confirmed that Instagram will test features that blur messages with nudity content to protect teenage users and “prevent potential scammers from reaching them.” This announcement came on the heels of growing allegations that the Meta-owned apps were addictive and have contributed to mental health issues among young people.

Meta Records 16 Percent Uptick in 2023 Annual Revenue, Metaverse Unit Still Under Loss

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief of Meta (previously Facebook) recently disclosed revenue details about the company’s last quarter. Meta clocked a revenue of $40.1 billion (roughly Rs. 3,34,416 crore) between September and December. In total, the social media and Web3 mammoth managed to reel-in $134.9 billion (roughly Rs. 11,25,119 crore) in the year of 2023. On a yearly basis, Meta’s revenue has spiked by 16 percent. It is, however, interesting that Meta’s Reality Labs unit has only seen losses since 2021.

In an earnings report posted on March 4, Zuckerberg acknowledged having seen a good period revenue-wise. Despite his Reality Labs unit seeing losses, the tech mogul lauded the advancements this initiative has ushered in emerging advanced technologies.

“We had a good quarter as our community and business continue to grow. We’ve made a lot of progress on our vision for advancing AI and the metaverse,” the 39-year-old multi-billionaire said in his statement.

Zuckerberg solidified his commitment to explore the metaverse when he rebranded Facebook to Meta in 2021. At the time, a new unit was set up within the company called the Reality Labs. This special body was tasked with conducting research and development around metaverse and its use cases.

In the last three years, Reality Labs released metaverse and augmented reality (AR) hardware products like the Quest VR headset lineup to further the adoption of these technologies. As of March 2023, Meta has reportedly sold 20 million Quest headsets.

Despite its ongoing efforts however, Meta’s Reality Labs unit only met with losses when it comes to its revenues. Meta reportedly revealed in February that Reality Labs suffered a loss of $46.5 billion while generating nearly $11 billion (roughly Rs. 91,744 crore) in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Prior to that, Reality Labs had lost $13.7 billion (roughly Rs. 1,12,200 crore) in 2022.

Despite these financial consequences, Zuckerberg has kept his estimation about the upcoming metaverse boom intact. In May 2023, Meta had commissioned a study that claimed that the metaverse could contribute as much as $760 billion (roughly Rs. 62,36,088 crore) or about 2.4 percent to the US annual gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035.

WhatsApp Now Lets Users Pin Multiple Messages in Chats: How to Use Feature

WhatsApp rolled out the feature to pin messages in individual as well as group chats in December 2023. The pinned messages would appear at the top of the chat, right below the name and image of the person or the group. Users could only, however, pin a single message within one chat. Earlier this month, it was reported that WhatsApp was testing a feature that allowed users to pin multiple messages within a chat. Now, the Meta-owned social messaging platform has officially announced this feature.

WhatsApp now allows users to pin up to three messages within a chat, the company confirmed via its official WhatsApp channels and other social media handles. The pinned messages stay at the top of the personal or group chat, as a banner. Tapping on the said banner will take users to the pinned message in the chat.

When more than one messages are pinned within a chat, the banner shows the number of messages pinned and a preview of the latest pin. In this case, clicking on the banner shows all the pinned messages. From there, users can navigate to the pinned message of their choice. Users can also choose the duration for which to pin a message. They have three options – 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.

WhatsApp has also detailed how users can pin a message. Android users can tap and hold a particular message, choose the three dots on the top right corner and then Pin > select the pin duration > Pin. On iOS, users can tap and hold a message and then click on More options > Pin > select the pin duration. Web and Desktop app users should select the downward arrow button next to a message, which appears when the cursor hovers near it, and select Pin message > select the pin duration > Pin.

The Meta-owned instant messaging platform has been recently reported to have been working on a feature to transcribe voice notes. It is also reportedly working on an AI-backed image editor within the application.

Mark Zuckerberg Criticises Apple Vision Pro Again, Says Meta Quest 3 Is ‘Better’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hit out at Apple’s Vision Pro headset over the weekend, stating that the social networking firm’s Quest 3 was the superior product. The Meta Co-Founder and CEO was responding to a post on Threads by an analyst claiming the Vision Pro was up to five years ahead of Meta’s offering. This is the second time that Zuckerberg has criticised Apple’s first mixed reality headset, which is priced at $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.89 lakh) — the Quest 3 costs $499 (roughly Rs. 41,300).

Analyst Benedict Evans stated in a Threads post that Apple’s Vision Pro was “pretty much the device Meta wants to reach in 3-5 years,” adding that he was “genuinely baffled” by Meta’s VR engineers claiming the headset was “basically just the same thing” as the Quest 3. Evans also said that the Apple Vision Pro was the device Meta would want to sell in 3-5 years, while Apple would want to sell its devices at the same price as the Quest 3 in the same time period.

Zuckerberg responded to the analyst’s post, stating that the Quest 3 was better than the Vision Pro. “If our devices weigh as much as theirs in 3-5 years, or have the motion blur theirs has, or the lack of precision inputs, etc, then that means we’ll have regressed significantly,” the Meta CEO said, adding that Apple had to make many compromises in order to provide a higher resolution than the Quest 3.

Evans later suggested that the higher resolution on the Vision Pro could help the company offer more than just a gaming device, while Zuckerberg responded stating that three out of the top seven apps for the Quest 3 — Horizon, VR Chat, and Rec Room — were all social apps. He also said that the Quest’s resolution was “also quite good”, adding that a higher resolution should not come at the cost of ergonomics and motion blur.

Both the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro are equipped with pancake lenses — the Quest 3 has LCD displays with a resolution of 2,064×2,208 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Vision Pro has a resolution of 2,160×3,840 pixels with a total of 23 million pixels, according to Apple. The latter also offers both hand and eye tracking, while Meta’s headset offers hand tracking and the company’s Touch Plus controllers. The Quest 3 and Vision Pro weigh 513g and up to 650g, respectively.

WhatsApp Introduces New Search by Date Feature for Messages: How to Use

WhatsApp, Meta’s popular messaging platform, has unveiled a new feature that enhances the app’s search capabilities. This latest addition allows users to search for messages based on specific dates, in an attempt to offer users a more efficient way to navigate through extensive chat histories. The new ‘Search by Date’ feature allows users to choose a specific date to find the messages exchanged on those particular days. It is likely to help users retrieve specific information from past conversations more smoothly as opposed to endless scrolling.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the feature on his WhatsApp channel. The ‘Search by Date’ feature is said to be available for all users globally across Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Web. It was reportedly spotted in beta testing back in November 2023.

To use the ‘Search by Date’ feature on WhatsApp, users need to open the desired individual or group chat that they wish to search. They have to then click on the three dots in the top right corner on Android phones or tap the contact or group name on iOS devices. If the app is updated to the latest available version, they can find a small calendar with a search symbol after they click the regular Search option. A pop-up calendar will then allow users to select the desired date.

For instance, if they want to go back to a message from October 20, 2023, they can select the same on the pop-up calendar by date, month, and year. Once the date is selected, the chat or group will open directly to messages from that day, allowing users to also scroll up or down the chat as well. Without this feature, users would have been forced to scroll past months’ worth of messages to get to the desired texts. With this feature, it just takes a few clicks.

WhatsApp recently also rolled out four new text formatting options globally – bulleted points, numbered lists, block quotes and inline quotes. These joined the existing bold, italic, strikethrough, and monospace formatting options.

Mark Zuckerberg Seeks to Avoid Personal Liability in Lawsuits Blaming Him for Kids’ Instagram Addiction

Mark Zuckerberg is seeking to avoid being held personally liable in two dozen lawsuits accusing Meta Platforms Inc. and other social media companies of addicting children to their products. The Meta chief executive officer made his case at a hearing Friday in California federal court, but the judge didn’t immediately make a decision. A ruling in Zuckerberg’s favor would dismiss him as a personal defendant in the litigation with no impact on the allegations against Meta.

Holding him personally responsible may be a challenge because of a corporate law tradition of shielding executives from liability, especially at larger companies where decision-making is often layered. A loss for the billionaire who launched Facebook with friends as a Harvard undergraduate two decades ago could encourage claims against other CEOs in mass personal injury litigation.

Zuckerberg faces allegations from young people and parents that he was repeatedly warned that Instagram and Facebook weren’t safe for children, but ignored the findings and chose not to share them publicly.

The cases naming Zuckerberg are a small subset of a collection of more than 1,000 suits in state and federal courts by families and public school districts against Meta along with Alphabet Inc.’s Google, ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok and Snap Inc. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, who is overseeing the federal cases, recently allowed some claims to proceed against the companies while dismissing others.

Plaintiffs contend that as the face of Meta, Zuckerberg has a responsibility to “speak fully and truthfully on the risks Meta’s platforms pose to children’s health.”

“With great power comes great responsibility,” plaintiffs’ lawyers said in a court filing, quoting the Spider Man comics in a footnote. “Unfortunately, Mr. Zuckerberg has not lived up to that maxim.”

Zuckerberg, the world’s fourth-richest person, has argued that he can’t be held personally responsible for actions at Meta just because he’s the CEO. His lawyers also claim that Zuckerberg didn’t have a duty to disclose the safety findings that were allegedly reported to him.

“There is ample legal precedent establishing that being an executive does not confer liability for alleged conduct of a corporation,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the claims against Zuckerberg should be dismissed in their entirety.

At the hearing, Rogers pressed the plaintiffs about whether Zuckerberg was required to disclose safety information absent a “special relationship” with the users of his products. Plaintiffs had argued that the Meta CEO had a responsibility to Facebook and Instagram users given his “outsize role in the company,” but Rogers challenged them to point to a specific law that would support their argument.

Rogers appeared more sympathetic to plaintiffs’ arguments that Zuckerberg could be held liable for personally concealing information as a corporate officer at Meta, asking Zuckerberg’s lawyers how he avoids potential personal liability if there’s an understanding that Meta itself had a duty to disclose the safety information.

The judge also discussed with lawyers how laws covering corporate officer responsibility, which vary among states, apply to Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg, who is Meta’s most significant shareholder and maintains sole voting control at the company, is also at risk of being held personally liable in a separate 2022 lawsuit over the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal brought by the attorney general of the District of Columbia in Washington.

Pinning blame on an executive for unlawful conduct typically hinges on showing their involvement in relevant day-to-day decisions or their knowledge of the practices at issue. It’s generally easier to assign executive liability at smaller companies, where an individual’s direct participation in decision-making can be clearer. At large companies, liability comes down to proving control over decision-making.

Social media companies have come under increased scrutiny for their impact on young people’s mental health and role in spreading sexually explicit content. At a Senate hearing last month, US Senator Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, pressed Zuckerberg on whether he should personally compensate victims of sexual exploitation online. Zuckerberg then offered a rare apology to the victims’ families.

The case is In Re Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation, 22-md-03047, US District Court, Northern District of California (Oakland).

Meta Quest 3 Is ‘The Better Product, Period’: Mark Zuckerberg Reviews Apple Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro has been available for purchase in the US for nearly two weeks now, and many users have shared opinions about the company’s first mixed-reality headset. Some have been impressed while others say they are apprehensive about the technology. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has his own mixed-reality headset Meta Quest 3 competing with it, has now posted his video review after testing the Vision Pro. Sharing his opinions, he said, “Quest is the better product, period.”

The review was posted on the Meta CEO’s Instagram profile. In the 3-minute long video, he goes over the features he liked in Apple Vision Pro and highlights where the Meta Quest 3 has the advantage. He started the review by saying, “Before this, I expected that Quest would be a better value for most people since it’s really good and it is seven times less expensive.” He goes on to say that after experiencing the headset, he now believes that Quest 3 is the overall better product.

The opinion is not surprising given Zuckerberg had reservations about the Apple Vision Pro ever since it was first unveiled at the iPhone maker’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2023. At the time, he said that Meta’s vision for the metaverse was fundamentally social and he was not a fan of how every demo by Apple showed a person “sitting on a couch by themself”.

Reviewing the mixed-reality headset, Zuckerberg praised the high-resolution display on Vision Pro, and pointed out that the eye tracking was “really nice”. However, he was quick to highlight that he was surprised by the number of trade-offs Apple made with the quality, comfort, and ergonomics of the headset and its other aspects in order to get to that.

Zuckerberg also did not miss out on the opportunity to compare the Apple headset with the Meta Quest 3 and explained that the mixed-reality headset was made 120g lighter compared to the predecessor in order to be more comfortable. He also pointed out that there are no wires in the Quest 3 that get in the way when a user moves around, unlike Vision Pro. Additionally, he said the field of vision and screen brightness was better on Meta’s wearable.

“When I look around, I see a lot of people who assumed that Vision Pro would be higher quality because it’s Apple and it costs $3000 more. But honestly, I’m pretty surprised that Quest is so much better for a vast majority of things that people use these headsets for with that price differential,” he added.

The Meta CEO also compared the content libraries of both headsets and highlighted that Quest had a larger immersive content library. While this is true, Apple is also working with studios such as Disney and gaming publisher, in addition to its Apple TV+ streaming service to create its own content library.

“The reality is every generation of computing has an open and closed model. In mobile, Apple’s closed model won but it’s not always that way. If you go back to the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner. In the next generation, Meta is going to be the open model and I really want to make sure that the open model wins out again,” Zuckerberg concluded.

WhatsApp Channels Gets Polls, Voice Notes, and Ability to Share Updates on Status

WhatsApp Channels, the broadcasting feature that lets organisations and public personalities send updates to their followers on the messaging platform, is getting a host of new tools. Channels will soon receive a polling feature, voice notes and the ability to share Channel updates to Status. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new Channel features Wednesday on his own WhatsApp Channel, showcasing the new polling function to his followers. WhatsApp rolled out the Channels feature, which works as a one-way broadcasting tool, last year. With regular updates from sports teams, organisations and public figures, Channels is aimed at increasing engagement on the Meta-owned messaging platform.

The new updates aim to bring more engagement to Channels, with Channel admins getting the ability to send out polls to members. Polls have existed for a while now on regular and group chats on WhatsApp. Channel admins will now also be able to send out updates in the form of voice notes, thus engaging the audience in a more direct and personal manner.

Additionally, WhatsApp Channel updates can now also be shared on Status. This can be done by long pressing the Channel update that a user wants to share, selecting ‘Forward,’ and then selecting ‘My Status.’ And finally, the new updates also include the ability to add multiple admins for a particular Channel.

Channels, which primarily serve as a one-way communication tool, has received updates since launch that aim to bring more engagement and interactivity. WhatsApp Channels reportedly rolled out a beta update in November 2023 that allows Channel admins to share Stickers with their followers. The same month, the platform was first seen working on the ability to share polls in Channels.

WhatsApp rolled out the Channels feature initially in June last year, with Meta describing it as “a simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates from people and organisations, right within WhatsApp” at launch. The broadcasting tool was later rolled out in 150 countries, including India, with support for directory search and reactions in September. Meta also partnered with popular sports teams like the Indian Cricket team and public figures like Diljit Dosanjh and Katrina Kaif to create dedicated Channels providing regular updates on the app.

Channels has grown to become a popular feature in a short time. According to WhatsApp, more than 2 billion people use the messaging service globally. WhatsApp Channels, on the other hand, crossed 500 million monthly active users within the first seven weeks of its launch, Zuckerberg had claimed in a Channels message last year.

Instagram Now Allows Users to Share Short, Looping Video Notes; Said to Be Testing New Privacy Feature

Instagram is introducing a feature for users to share video Notes. Notes was unveiled by Instagram a year back, as a feature similar to statuses on WhatsApp. Previously, users could only upload text or emojis to their status update. Now they can share a two-second looping video Note, which the users will be able to share with mutual followers or with their Close Friends list. Another leak suggests that the social media platform is testing a new privacy feature that will let users decide who can view their Likes on posts and reels.

In an Instagram support page, the platform noted that users can now share small, looping video Notes. This was first spotted by TechCrunch. The feature currently supports video captured only from the front-facing camera. Although different from Instagram Stories, the video Notes will also be visible for 24 hours, just like Stories. You cannot use existing videos in your camera gallery, therefore, the only option is to record a video in real time. Gadgets 360 was able to verify this update.

Before sharing the video Note, you can choose to add a text caption and music. You can also customise who sees your Notes, by choosing between your Mutual Followers or the Close Friends list. Notably, since the Notes are visible in Direct Messages, any video Note you share will change the thumbnail of your profile on the viewer’s page from your profile picture to that of the video shared, the report claims.

Users can now also reply to a Note using not just text, but also audio, photos, video, gifs, and stickers, according to the report. When someone reacts to a person’s Notes, the text, sticker, audio, etc. will be sent to the user as a DM.

Meanwhile, Instagram may also introduce a new privacy feature soon that may allow users to choose who can view their Likes on posts and Reels on the platform. Screenshots shared by X user Hammod Oh (@ihammod_oh) show the feature that is likely being tested. Users are presented with the options for – “allow everyone to see likes,” “allow people that you follow to see likes,” “allow close friends to see likes,” and “don’t allow anyone to see likes.” Nothing about this feature has been announced officially yet.

Will the Nothing Phone 2 serve as the successor to the Phone 1, or will the two co-exist? Meta Rolls Out ‘Look and Ask With Meta AI’ Feature on Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, Announces Early Access Programme

Meta is now allowing select customers to put on its pair of Ray-Ban smart glasses and try out new bespectacled AI-powered experiences as part of an early access programme. The Facebook parent has announced initial user tests for the smart glasses and intends to gather feedback on new features ahead of wider release. Meta is also introducing updates to improve the Ray-Ban smart glasses experience, which is powered by the Meta AI assistant, bringing smarter and more helpful responses.

Earlier this month, Meta announced a host of new features to its AI services across platforms. In an update to the same blog post on Tuesday, the company introduced a few new Meta Ray-Ban smart glass features. Those who sign up for early access can try out multimodal AI-powered capabilities, which allow the smart glasses to perceive visual information by looking and answering related queries.

According to Meta, its AI assistant on the glasses can take a picture of what you’re seeing, either via voice command or the dedicated capture button. It can also come up with a witty caption for the photo. Users could pick up an object while wearing the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and ask for information on the same, or look at a sign in a different language and ask the AI-powered glasses to translate it to English. The company, however, has warned users that its multimodal AI might make mistakes and will be improved over time with the help of feedback.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the look and ask feature on the AI smart glasses in an Instagram post. In the video, taken from the first-person perspective from the glasses, Zuckerberg picks out a striped, dark shirt and asks Meta AI to suggest pants to go with it.

Additionally, Meta says it is rolling out Bing-powered real time information capabilities on Meta AI-powered smart glasses. “You can ask Meta AI about sports scores or information on local landmarks, restaurants, stocks and more,” the company said in its update.

The look and ask with Meta AI feature on the glasses takes a picture when prompted to “look” and delivers an audio-based response to the related query. Do note that all pictures taken and processed by AI are stored and used to train Meta AI and other Meta products, which would likely spark a privacy concern. Meta says that the information collected, used and retained will comply with Meta’s Privacy Policy.

The early access programme is now live for Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses owners in the US and interested users can enroll for the same on the Meta View app on iOS and Android. To sign up, tap the settings button in the bottom right of the Meta View app, swipe down and tap Early Access. You’d also have to make sure that the smart glasses and the Meta View app have received the latest update.

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses were launched in September, alongside the Meta Quest 3 and other Meta products. The glasses are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 Platform SoC and come with a 12-megapixel sensor, an LED light, and 32GB of inbuilt storage.

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses with standard lenses are priced at $299 (roughly Rs. 24,999), while the pair with Polarized lenses and transition lenses cost $329 (roughly Rs. 27,400) and $379 (roughly Rs. 31,500), respectively. The glasses are available to buy in 15 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and European markets. Meta has not announced a launch date for the Indian market yet.
