YouTube Reportedly Rolling Out Support for 8K Resolution Videos on the Meta Quest

YouTube has rolled out a new update for its app for the Meta Quest, as per a report. The users of the mixed reality headset can now reportedly view YouTube videos in 8K resolution. However, it is said that HDR videos do not support 8K and instead will be available to watch in a maximum of 4K resolution. The feature was reportedly rolled out recently with a new update to YouTube’s app for the Meta Quest interface. Notably, the video-streaming giant recently stated that it will begin taking appropriate action against third-party apps that block ads.

According to a report by Android Central, the YouTube for Meta Quest app’s latest version 1.54 now supports 8K resolution or 7680 × 4320p. The feature was spotted on the Meta Quest 3, which was launched in October 2023. Interestingly, the Meta Quest 3 display features 4K LCD panels with 2064 x 220p resolution per eye. It is unclear if viewers will be able to tell the difference between 4K and 8K video quality on the mixed reality headset.

Based on the report, users just need to be on the updated app to get the functionality. Once they enter the app, they can search for 8K videos within the VR app. Once it begins playing, tapping the settings icon located at the bottom of the player will show an option to change quality, as per the report. Selecting 4320p is said to play the video in 8K resolution.

However, HDR videos on the Quest 3 reportedly do not support 8K quality yet, so those would only go as high as 4K resolution. Interestingly, as long the video is in SDR quality, users can also watch 360-degree content in 8K as well.

YouTube has also been actively cracking down on third-party apps that block ads. In a recent announcement, the company said that it will begin taking appropriate action against such apps which use its API and offer such services as it violates the company’s terms of service. It further cautioned viewers who are using these third-party apps that they may experience buffering issues or see the error “The following content is not available on this app” when trying to watch a video.”

Meta Quest 3 Is ‘The Better Product, Period’: Mark Zuckerberg Reviews Apple Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro has been available for purchase in the US for nearly two weeks now, and many users have shared opinions about the company’s first mixed-reality headset. Some have been impressed while others say they are apprehensive about the technology. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has his own mixed-reality headset Meta Quest 3 competing with it, has now posted his video review after testing the Vision Pro. Sharing his opinions, he said, “Quest is the better product, period.”

The review was posted on the Meta CEO’s Instagram profile. In the 3-minute long video, he goes over the features he liked in Apple Vision Pro and highlights where the Meta Quest 3 has the advantage. He started the review by saying, “Before this, I expected that Quest would be a better value for most people since it’s really good and it is seven times less expensive.” He goes on to say that after experiencing the headset, he now believes that Quest 3 is the overall better product.

The opinion is not surprising given Zuckerberg had reservations about the Apple Vision Pro ever since it was first unveiled at the iPhone maker’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2023. At the time, he said that Meta’s vision for the metaverse was fundamentally social and he was not a fan of how every demo by Apple showed a person “sitting on a couch by themself”.

Reviewing the mixed-reality headset, Zuckerberg praised the high-resolution display on Vision Pro, and pointed out that the eye tracking was “really nice”. However, he was quick to highlight that he was surprised by the number of trade-offs Apple made with the quality, comfort, and ergonomics of the headset and its other aspects in order to get to that.

Zuckerberg also did not miss out on the opportunity to compare the Apple headset with the Meta Quest 3 and explained that the mixed-reality headset was made 120g lighter compared to the predecessor in order to be more comfortable. He also pointed out that there are no wires in the Quest 3 that get in the way when a user moves around, unlike Vision Pro. Additionally, he said the field of vision and screen brightness was better on Meta’s wearable.

“When I look around, I see a lot of people who assumed that Vision Pro would be higher quality because it’s Apple and it costs $3000 more. But honestly, I’m pretty surprised that Quest is so much better for a vast majority of things that people use these headsets for with that price differential,” he added.

The Meta CEO also compared the content libraries of both headsets and highlighted that Quest had a larger immersive content library. While this is true, Apple is also working with studios such as Disney and gaming publisher, in addition to its Apple TV+ streaming service to create its own content library.

“The reality is every generation of computing has an open and closed model. In mobile, Apple’s closed model won but it’s not always that way. If you go back to the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner. In the next generation, Meta is going to be the open model and I really want to make sure that the open model wins out again,” Zuckerberg concluded.

Samsung XR Headset ‘Infinite’ to Arrive in Second Half of 2024, Months After Apple Vision Pro: Report

Samsung is believed to be working on an extended reality (XR) headset to compete with the likes of Apple and Meta in the segment. The South Korean technology conglomerate had said earlier this year that it was collaborating with Google and Qualcomm to develop the wearable. Now, a new report says that Samsung’s XR headset could arrive in late 2024. Bear in mind that Apple’s mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, is slated to go on sale sometime early next year. The Samsung XR headset could thus arrive a few months after its competitor.

According to a report from 9to5Google (via JoongAng), Samsung is planning to unveil its XR headset, codenamed “Infinite” in the second half of 2024. The original report states that Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience (MX) division is aiming headset production for December next year.

The product announcement will reportedly take place at an Unpacked event in the second half of 2024. This could align with the timeline for the 2024 Unpacked event where Samsung will launch its next generation of foldable phones. The Galaxy S24 series, on the other hand, is likely to arrive at a Galaxy Unpacked event in January 2024. According to the report, the company plans to ship 30,000 units of the XR headset initially. Samsung Display will reportedly develop the OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) display for the headset.

Back in February, Samsung revealed that it was collaborating with Google and Qualcomm to develop a new extended reality (XR) headset. The company said its headset will run on a custom Qualcomm chipset and Google’s latest Wear OS. Samsung has not yet revealed any other details about its upcoming headset.

At the time, a report from The Washington Post had claimed that Samsung’s XR headset project would also include a service partnership with Meta and Microsoft — a sort of technological alliance against Apple.

The iPhone maker took the covers off the Vision Pro at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The mixed reality headset packs impressive technology and features, which include dual Micro OLED displays, eye tracking, infrared cameras, and a sophisticated sensor array, including LiDAR scanner and TrueDepth cameras. The headset will run on Apple’s M2 chip, as well as a new chip called R1. Apple’s premium headset has also set a high price of $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,88,700). To compare, Meta’s latest Quest 3 headset starts at $499.99 (roughly Rs. 41,500).

The Meta Quest 3 was announced earlier this year in June. Meta, an early entrant in the headset market, revealed more details about the Quest 3 at its Meta Connect 2023 annual conference in September, with pre-orders going live at the event. The Meta Quest 3 runs on the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform and comes with a 4K+ (2,064 x 2,208 pixels per eye) Infinite Display.

WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger to Get AI Assistants; Meta Shows Off Image Generation Tool Emu

Meta showcased a host of new products and services, including the Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headset and a pair of smart glasses made in collaboration with Ray-Ban, at its Meta Connect annual conference on Wednesday. Alongside the hardware, the company also announced its own AI assistant, Meta AI, and a variety of AI experiences across Meta’s suite of apps and devices, including AI stickers in Meta apps and AI editing tools for Instagram. Meta AI, a conversational generative AI assistant much like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Bing, will be available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

Meta AI will be powered by the company’s custom model that borrows from Meta’s large language model, Llama 2. The AI assistant, Meta said, will provide real-time information in response to text-based queries, trawling the internet via Bing search. Meta AI will also generate images based on text prompts. The AI assistant can help plan hiking trips with your friends in a group chat, prepare recipes, or help with your shopping list. Users can type in “@MetaAI /imagine” inside their chat box and follow it up with descriptive text prompts for what they want the AI assistant to do. Meta AI is also coming to the company’s latest devices, the Meta Quest 3 and the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

In addition to its default AI assistant, the company also showed off AI avatars with distinct personalities. Meta is bringing 28 AI characters, each with a unique backstory and behaviour. These AI characters can be conversed with in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, and will also include some public figures and influencers that Meta has partnered up with for their likenesses. Famous people coming as AI characters include Dwayne Wade, Kendall Jenner, Mr. Beast, Snoop Dogg and more.

Meta is calling its image generation tool ‘expressive media universe’, or Emu. The tool can also quickly generate AI stickers based on a user’s text prompts inside apps like WhatsApp or Instagram to share with friends. “It’s high-quality, photorealistic,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the presentation. “But, one of the coolest things is the Emu generates that fast. It’s not a minute. It takes five seconds to generate one of these,” he added. This custom sticker generation feature will roll out to select English-language users over the next month in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook Stories.

The Facebook parent is also bringing new AI-powered image editing tools, specifically two new features — Restyle and Backdrop — that utilise technology from the Emu tool. Restyle acts as a kind of custom filter that works based on user prompts. Based on single descriptor or a more detail prompt, Restyle will edit your images to reflect a particular mood. And as the name suggests, Backdrop will let users change the background of their images based on custom prompts. Images created using both tools will carry markers that indicate the image is AI-generated. Meta said that Restyle and Backdrop were coming soon to Instagram but did not provide a concrete release date for the same.
