iPhone 17 Series Said to Get Smaller Dynamic Island; Apple Could Unveil iPhone 17 Slim in 2025

iPhone 16 series is expected to go official in the second half of this year but we are now hearing rumours concerning the next generation of Apple’s iPhone lineup. The purported iPhone 17 family is tipped to come with a refreshed design, front-facing camera upgrades, and a smaller Dynamic Island among other improvements. Apple could also introduce a ‘Slim’ variant with the iPhone 17 series replacing the Plus version. The iPhone 17 Pro models are said to be powered by Apple’s A19 Pro chip.

As reported by 9to5Mac, Jeff Pu of Haitong International Tech Research revealed details about the iPhone 17 series in his research note. According to the analyst, the 2025 iPhone family will include four models — iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone Slim model could replace the “Plus” model and offer a “slim design”.

The vanilla iPhone 17 is said to get a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 17 Slim could sport a 6.6-inch display. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to feature 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screens, respectively.

The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, and iPhone 17 Pro will all have an aluminium design that is “more complex”, adds the report. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is said to get a titanium build and a “narrowed Dynamic Island”. To reduce the size of the Face ID sensor, Apple could use “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor in this top-end variant. The other models in the iPhone 17 lineup are said to retain the current design.

Apple’s regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim could run on an A18 or A19 chip with support for 8GB RAM. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to be powered by an A19 Pro chip alongside 12GB RAM. This would be a significant upgrade over the current iPhone models. The ongoing iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have 8GB of RAM.

Pu reportedly opines that all four iPhone 17 models will feature 24-megapixel front-facing cameras. Currently, Apple packs 12-megapixel front-facing cameras in the iPhone 15 lineup.

Apple is very consistent with its iPhone release dates. Given that, we can expect the iPhone 17 series to be released in September 2025.

iPhone 17 Pro Models to Arrive in 2025 With 2nm Chipset Built by TSMC: Report

Apple is planning to launch the first iPhone equipped with a processor built on a 2nm process in 2025, according to a report. The Cupertino company will reportedly launch the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with a next generation chipset from TSMC. The iPhone 15 Pro models were the first phones from Apple to be equipped with a 3nm A17 Pro chip, while the standard iPhone models still run on the 4nm A16 Bionic chipset that previously powered the Pro models launched in 2022.

According to a DigiTimes report (via Apple Insider) citing supply chain sources, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is preparing a new chip manufactured on its 2nm process for the iPhone 17 Pro models that are expected to launch in the second half of 2024. Apple is also expected to introduce Mac models with 2nm chips in the future, but the report does not specify a timeline for these processors.

With TSMC on track to produce the 2nm chips that will be built on its “N2” process technology, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are likely to be the first smartphones to feature the next generation chips, while the standard iPhone 17 models could be equipped with a previous generation chipset, a process Apple has followed since the iPhone 14, which featured the same chip as the iPhone 13 Pro.

While the Taiwanese chip firm will start production of 2nm chip designs next year, it is also working on a more advanced version of the “N2” process technology for even better 2nm chips that will be ready by 2026-end, according to the report. This suggests that the first iPhone models with chips built on the “N2P” process technology could be from the iPhone 19 series that could debut a year later in 2027.

TSMC is also working on its more advanced “A14” process technology, which will allow it to produce 1.4nm chipsets, according to the report. However, there’s currently no word on a timeline for production of chips on the advanced process technology, which means it could be years before an iPhone model is launched with a 1.4nm processor.

Leaked: Apple’s Plans for 2nm iPhone Processor, Qualcomm Working on 3nm, 4nm Nodes for XR/VR Headset

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are the only widely available smartphones which offer processors designed using the 3nm fabrication process. Going smaller brings several advantages and allows manufacturers to package more components, adding more features while also making these processors more power efficient. The iPhone 15 Pro models, launched late last year, are capable of running AAA gaming titles with high-end graphics, which is currently not possible with the same level of efficiency on an Android smartphone with a 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC inside. Turns out, Apple isn’t resting on its laurels yet, as a new report indicates that it’s already begun work on 2nm processor designs.

A report by gamma0burst shows a rather confidential document with tons of redacted information, revealing that Apple has begun work on designing its next 2nm SoCs. There’s no information about when these will arrive in a device or even which devices these are being designed for, but given that the current-day iPhones have the most power efficient mobile chipsets available, there’s a good chance these could show up in future iPhone models.

As per the latest report, Apple will go with a 3nm processor (possibly called the A18 and A18 Pro) for the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models, keeping in mind last year’s release strategy. We have already seen leaked benchmarks revealing higher scores than the currently available model. The Apple iPhone 16 series and 16 Pro series aren’t expected until Q3, this year. According to a previous report by Phone Arena, TSMC is expected to start 2nm chip production by 2025, so there is a good chance we could see these new processors arrive with the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The leaked documents also shed light on Qualcomm’s current efforts. It reveals that Qualcomm is working on 3nm and 4nm platforms for its extended reality (XR) and virtual reality (VR) SoCs, which should give them an edge keeping in mind Apple’s Vision Pro and its M2 chips (5nm).

However, this does not entirely mean that Qualcomm will fall another generation behind when Apple readies its 2nm silicon. An older report by Wccftech, did mention that Qualcomm is actively looking at samples from Samsung and TSMC to figure out a strategy for its Snapdragon Gen 5 platform. The currently available Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor found in devices like the OnePlus 12 uses a 4nm process, while Qualcomm is expected to push for a 3nm process with the next Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 generation.
