Google, Meta, Qualcomm Form Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems in Light of New EU Tech Rules

Alphabet’s Google, Meta Platforms, Qualcomm and seven other tech companies on Wednesday teamed up to push for open digital ecosystems in response to new EU tech rules in a move that may also take the edge of possible future legislation.

Calling itself the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE), the group said it wants to promote more open platforms and systems to boost growth and innovation in Europe.

The group said it will work with academics, policymakers and companies on digital openness and how this can be achieved in Europe “through the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and in future EU regulatory framework developments”.

The DMA requires gatekeepers — tech giants that control access to their platforms — to allow third parties to inter-operate with the gatekeeper’s own services and allow their business users to promote their offer and conclude contracts with their customers outside the gatekeeper’s platform.

“We have had a number of conversations in the past few months about what ‘good’ looks like when it comes to digital ecosystems in Europe, what fosters innovation, and what will positively impact competitiveness. We think openness is the crucial element,” Lynx founder Stan Larroque said in a statement.

Other members of the group are Chinese smart devices maker Honor, China’s Lenovo, French augmented reality start-up Lynx, US telecoms equipment maker Motorola, UK electronics maker Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera and German messaging services provider Wire.

The Coalition said it aims to open up digital ecosystems through cross-industry collaboration and promote seamless connectivity and interoperable systems, among others.

Huawei Virtual Reality Headset Tipped to Debut Next Year, May Compete With Apple Vision Pro

Huawei is tipped to be working on a virtual reality (VR) headset that will compete with the Apple Vision Pro. The purported high-end headset will be launched by the company at the end of 2024, according to details shared by a tipster. Apple’s high-end spatial computer supports both augmented reality (AR) and VR content and runs on a dedicated operating system called visionOS, while allowing users to interact with the device using their eyes, finger-based gestures, and via a virtual keyboard.

X (formerly known as Twitter) user Mochamad Farido Fanani shared details of Huawei’s rumoured VR headset in a post that states the Chinese tech conglomerate’s device will be powered by a “flagship processor”. However, it is worth viewing these claims with some scepticism, as the user does not have a proven track record of reliably leaking information.

While there’s no word on which chip will power Huawei’s headset, Apple’s first mixed reality headset is powered by two processors — Apple’s M2 chip for standard operations and a new dedicated R1 chip to process spatial input from the camera, microphones, and sensors.

According to Fanani, the purported VR glasses from Huawei will be equipped with an internal fan-driven heat dissipation system for thermal management, while the device would run on external batteries. This sounds similar to Apple’s approach with the first-generation Vision Pro headset, which also runs on external batteries.

Huawei isn’t alone in its efforts to develop a VR headset, Fanani says — former Huawei sub brand Honor is also working on a system for a virtual reality headset. However, the tipster has not shared any details related to the device’s hardware. Samsung is also reportedly working on its ‘Infinite’ extended reality (XR) headset that could arrive in the second half of 2024.

Months before Apple unveiled the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset at WWDC 2023, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi unveiled its Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition at MWC 2023, a headset powered by the Snapdragon XR 2 Gen 1 chip from Qualcomm. The smart glasses support both AR and VR content. The headset sports advanced “retina-level” displays and supports Xiaomi’s AR gesture controls.

Last year, Oppo launched its second “assisted reality” headset called the Oppo Air Glass 2 at the company’s annual Oppo Inno Day in China. The device supports voice to text features and can translate conversations in real time, place phone calls, and display location-based navigation instructions. The wearable device weighs 38g, according to the company.

Honor Magic 6 Series Tipped to Get 160-Megapixel Periscope Sensor, OV50K OmniVision Primary Camera

Honor Magic 6 series is expected to debut in the first quarter of next year. It is expected to include two models — Honor Magic 6 and Honor Magic 6 Pro. They are already confirmed to run on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The Honor Magic 6 smartphones were widely speculated to include a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. Now, a tipster hints at a notable shift in the camera specifications, saying Honor might opt for a lower resolution periscope telephoto lens instead. The Honor Magic 6 series is said to use a primary camera from OmniVision.

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) on Weibo claimed that the Honor Magic 6 series will feature a 160-megapixel periscope zoom camera, instead of a 200-megapixel sensor. The sensor might boast a 1/1.3-inch size. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200-megapixel sensor also boasts the same size.

Meanwhile, the Magic 6 lineup is said to include OmniVision’s OV50K main sensor. This sensor could debut with the new LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology.

Honor’s Magic 6 lineup is expected to go official in the first quarter of 2024. They will pack the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC under the hood and come equipped with a deeper AI integration as well as upgraded satellite communication. The handsets will have a Magic Capsule feature resembling Apple’s Dynamic Island.

The Magic 6 series is said to come with upgrades over the Magic 5 series. The Honor Magic 5 and Honor Magic 5 Pro were unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona in February. The Honor Magic 5 series is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and pack triple rear cameras. The phones are backed by 5,100mAh batteries with 66W fast charging support. The Pro model has a 50-megapixel primary camera, while the vanilla variant has a 54-megapixel main sensor.

Honor Magic 6 Series to Support Upgraded Satellite Communication, Deeper AI Integration

Honor Magic 6 series is expected to launch soon. The lineup is likely to include a base and a Pro model. It is said to succeed the Honor Magic 5 series that was unveiled at the MWC 2023 event in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this year in February. The company has already confirmed a few key details of the models. Now, in an event in China, a company official has confirmed that the purported smartphones are likely to sport some upgraded features.

The announcement was made at the 2023 Digital Ecosystem Satellite Mobile Communications Industry Development Forum in China.

Kun explains that Honor’s new work solves major technical issues involving the antenna size, call duration, and overall communication experience and allows users to have a seamless experience with “the smallest antenna size, the most stable signal, and the most power-efficient operation” (translated from Chinese).

Tipster Digital Chat Station claimed that the Honor Magic 6 lineup models are likely to carry miniaturised satellite chips with “low-power call and heat dissipation technology” (translated from Chinese). The leak added that the Oppo Find X7 series models are also likely to carry these chips.
