The ColorOS 14 update brings a new Trinity Engine to improve RAM and storage management. The new UI layer also includes several AI-powered features and new privacy functionalities. Oppo has revealed the names of the devices that will receive global beta versions of ColorOS 14 in the coming days. Models including the Oppo Find X5 series, Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G, and Oppo A77 had already started receiving public beta for the new version back in October.

Oppo announced Thursday the official rollout of the ColorOS 14 global version based on Android 14. The new UI layer has a water-inspired Aquamorphic design and offers AI-powered smart features and a new tool for safety and privacy protection.

ColorOS 14 features, changes

ColorOS 14 brings aquamorphic-themed ringtones for calls, alarms and notifications, as well as seven global UI sound designs. The new Aqua Dynamics design integrates common forms of interaction into bubbles, capsules, and panels that expand from the status bar to present information flawlessly. ColorOS 14 offers a Go Green Always-On Display to raise awareness about climate change and environmental protection. This includes three sets of Environment Vision pages, with five environment-related animations on each page that can change based on the user’s daily step count.

Further, ColorOS 14 has AI-powered Smart Touch that lets users select text, images, and videos from the system and third-party apps and collect them on the File Dock, or even consolidate them into a single note by selecting and dragging gestures. The new File Dock on the Smart Sidebar can be used to share content across apps quickly through split-screen, floating windows, or the Dock itself. The update brings a Smart Image Matting feature for cropping multiple subjects like persons and animals out from a single image or paused video.

The new ROM Vitalization feature of Trinity Engine can free up memory space by compressing app and file data through App Compression and File Compression within the Phone Manager setting. It is claimed to save up to 20GB of storage space. The RAM Vitalization functionality can accelerate memory performance to boost multi-app efficiency and keep more applications alive in the background, while the CPU Vitalization feature can manage power consumption without compromising on performance.

Furthermore, ColorOS 14 features an AI algorithm known as Smart Charging that can automatically adjust the charging current based on the smartphone’s usage status to help prevent unnecessary battery wear. Picture Keeper is a new privacy feature that prevents apps from misusing permissions for photos or video

Oppo’s New ODialer App Allows Stealth Call Recording on OnePlus, Realme, Oppo Smartphones

OnePlus, Realme, and Oppo devices running on Android 12 or higher will now be able to record calls without an on-call voice disclaimer through a downloadable dialer app called ODialer. The app, developed by Oppo’s ColorOS and released on January 16, is currently available on Google Play Store only to users of the aforementioned smartphone brands’ eligible devices. Call recording feature on stock dialer apps triggers a voice disclaimer when switched on during a call, which can be avoided with the latest app.

Android phones have generally been seen shipping their smartphones with a version of their own default dialer applications or with the Google Phone app loaded as the default dialer. However, Oppo seems to be looking to change this, with the brand’s ColorOS team listed as the developer of the ODialer app on Google Play Store.

ODialer also includes a speed dial feature, that allows users to contact their top contacts easily. Oppo ColorOS’s ODialer app requires Android 12 and above and bears version number 13.1.5. The dialer also features a dark mode.

According to the app’s ‘About’ section on Google Play Store, it comes with a call management feature that allows users to organise recent calls in groups. However, the main feature of the app remains the support for call recording without an on-call disclaimer announcement.

Voice recording feature on stock Android dialer apps generally has a disclaimer announcement that notes “this call is now being recorded”, which could put off some call receivers. ODialer seems to solve this problem by removing the disclaimer altogether and allowing for stealth call recording. The app could, thus, also spark privacy concerns.

The app is currently rated 3.8 out of 5 on Google Play Store, with reviews suggesting that there are plenty of bugs in the current version of the app.

However, a Gadgets360 staff member was also able to verify the functionality of the app’s stealth call recording feature on a OnePlus device.

The update brings a redesigned user interface. It offers a new theme palette and a new font that is said to improve readability of text in any language, Oppo added. The ColorOS 13 features card-style layout for notifications and widgets, and the app icons have curved edges. It also brings the Quantum Animation Engine that enables Aquamorphic effects.

The new OS version from Oppo offers a new series of always-on display (AOD) images called Homeland. The AOD images show different animals in their natural habitats. The AOD also gets animations that are said to reveal changes in the habitats the animals live in. The company has also released the Dynamic Computing Engine with ColorOS 13. It also “simplifies” banner notifications to reduce distractions. With ColorOS 13 update, the multi-screen connect feature now supports sharing between Oppo handsets, Oppo Pad Air, and Oppo desktops. ColorOS 13 also brings the new encrypted Private Safe feature with Advanced Encryption Standard, which is said to provide “high levels” of safety, according to the company.
