iOS 18 ‘VendorUI’ Internal Builds Issued to Factories for Quality Control Testing: Report

iOS 18 is expected to be released in the second half of this year and Apple is expected to take the wraps off its next iPhone operating system update in the coming months at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. The iPhone maker is reportedly issuing an early version of the iOS 18 update to factories and other partners for quality control testing. This is said to be a limited version of Apple’s iOS operating system, with irrelevant applications and features removed from the user interface (UI) before it is distributed by the company.

According to a MacRumors report that cites a private X (formerly Twitter) account that is said to have a good track record of leaking details related to Apple, the iPhone maker has begun sharing a version of iOS 18 called “VendorUI” in a controlled manner with “factories and relevant vendors”.  This version contains some elements of iOS that are expected to be unveiled by the company in the coming months at WWDC 2024.

Apple develops five different versions of iOS every year, according to the report. Two of these — LLDiags (a low-level diagnostics version) and NonUI (a version for hardware engineers and calibration machines) are prepared without the iOS user interface. Meanwhile, the VendorUI (used in factories for testing) and InternalUI (used by Apple’s engineers) contain pre-production versions of iOS. Apple’s “Release” version is the one that is finally rolled out to users with all iOS visual elements, apps and features.

As most apps and features not relevant to factories and relevant vendors aren’t included in the VendorUI image, we can expect to learn more about some parts of the iOS 18 UI in the future, ahead of WWDC 2024. Previous reports suggest that Apple is working on overhauling the mobile OS interface with the upcoming iOS 18 update, including some visual elements from visionOS, Apple’s operating system for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset.

As per previous reports, Apple is expected to focus on bringing a lot of new AI features and functionality to eligible iPhone models with the iOS 18 update. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously stated that the company hopes the AI-infused iOS 18 update — expected to arrive later this year — will convince more customers to upgrade to the iPhone 16 series of smartphones. The next generation iPhone lineup and iOS 18 software update could be released in the third quarter of 2024, based on the company’s launch schedule in recent years.

Apple Vision Pro Could Soon Be Available in More Countries, Report Suggests

Apple Vision Pro could soon be launched in multiple countries, according to a report. The Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled its first mixed reality (supporting both augmented reality and virtual reality) headset at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2023. It later went on sale in the US in 2024. While there have been reports suggesting the headset’s expansion to other regions, the company has not shared any such plans yet. But now, a report has found clues about which countries could be the first to get the Vision Pro hidden within the device’s operating system’s codes.

The strings of codes in VisionOS, where the hints for the expansion of the Apple Vision Pro were first spotted by MacRumors. The virtual keyboard for the device currently only supports the English (US) language. However, the report mentions that the codes suggest that support for 12 more languages will be added.

These 12 languages include Cantonese – Traditional, Chinese – Simplified, English (Australia), English (Canada), English (Japan), English (Singapore), English (UK), French (Canada), French (France), German (Germany), Japanese, and Korean. Since the inclusion of the language also mentions the region, the report claims that China, Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, the UK, France, and Germany may become the first to see the headset being sold in their countries. Notably, India is not mentioned in the list.

Last month, tipster Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed that the Apple Vision Pro could be introduced to more regions sooner than expected. The primary reason for this was cited as a drop in demand for the mixed reality headset. “Due to the limited demand growth in the U.S. market, advancing the global release schedule is favourable when the supply improves,” the tipster said, adding that the headset could be introduced in other countries before the WWDC 2024, which is likely to be held in June.

The Apple Vision Pro features dual Micro OLED displays, totalling 23 million pixels. It includes a custom 3D lens for augmented reality content across the wearer’s field of view. Equipped with a comprehensive sensor array, including main cameras, downward cameras for hand tracking, IR illuminators, and LiDAR scanner, it offers detailed spatial recognition. The device also integrates two individually amplified drivers for personalised spatial audio. Powered by Apple’s M2 chip and a new R1 chip, it supports 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones.

Mark Zuckerberg Criticises Apple Vision Pro Again, Says Meta Quest 3 Is ‘Better’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hit out at Apple’s Vision Pro headset over the weekend, stating that the social networking firm’s Quest 3 was the superior product. The Meta Co-Founder and CEO was responding to a post on Threads by an analyst claiming the Vision Pro was up to five years ahead of Meta’s offering. This is the second time that Zuckerberg has criticised Apple’s first mixed reality headset, which is priced at $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.89 lakh) — the Quest 3 costs $499 (roughly Rs. 41,300).

Analyst Benedict Evans stated in a Threads post that Apple’s Vision Pro was “pretty much the device Meta wants to reach in 3-5 years,” adding that he was “genuinely baffled” by Meta’s VR engineers claiming the headset was “basically just the same thing” as the Quest 3. Evans also said that the Apple Vision Pro was the device Meta would want to sell in 3-5 years, while Apple would want to sell its devices at the same price as the Quest 3 in the same time period.

Zuckerberg responded to the analyst’s post, stating that the Quest 3 was better than the Vision Pro. “If our devices weigh as much as theirs in 3-5 years, or have the motion blur theirs has, or the lack of precision inputs, etc, then that means we’ll have regressed significantly,” the Meta CEO said, adding that Apple had to make many compromises in order to provide a higher resolution than the Quest 3.

Evans later suggested that the higher resolution on the Vision Pro could help the company offer more than just a gaming device, while Zuckerberg responded stating that three out of the top seven apps for the Quest 3 — Horizon, VR Chat, and Rec Room — were all social apps. He also said that the Quest’s resolution was “also quite good”, adding that a higher resolution should not come at the cost of ergonomics and motion blur.

Both the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro are equipped with pancake lenses — the Quest 3 has LCD displays with a resolution of 2,064×2,208 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Vision Pro has a resolution of 2,160×3,840 pixels with a total of 23 million pixels, according to Apple. The latter also offers both hand and eye tracking, while Meta’s headset offers hand tracking and the company’s Touch Plus controllers. The Quest 3 and Vision Pro weigh 513g and up to 650g, respectively.

Apple Begins Formal Development of MacBook Pro With M4 Chip: Gurman

Apple has reportedly started work on a new MacBook Pro model that is powered by a fourth generation Apple Silicon processor. The Cupertino company launched Mac computers with its M3 chip last year — its first processors built on the firm’s 3nm technology that was also used to produce the A17 Pro chip that powers the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This year’s Mac models, including the purported MacBook Pro, are expected to run on the next-generation M4 chip.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (via 9to5Mac) states that Apple has started work on its next MacBook Pro model that is expected to arrive as the successor to the M3-powered 2023 MacBook Pro. In the Q&A section of his Power On newsletter, Gurman responded to a user stating “[…] maybe I will snap up an M4 MacBook Pro, which by the way, just started formal development.”

Details of Apple’s M4 chip are scarce, but the processor is expected to be similar to the purported A18 Pro chip that is expected to power the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The company’s flagship iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with a 3nm A17 Pro chip, while its latest iMac, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models are available with M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips.

It’s worth noting that it could be a while before Apple launches its next MacBook Pro model — it is yet to release M3-powered versions of its desktop Mac computers, unlike the aforementioned models. The company is yet to share any details of the next-generation processor, and it could be launched after the arrival of macOS 15, or even in 2025.

Last year, benchmark scores for Apple’s top-of-the-line M3 Max chip revealed that performance was much higher than its predecessor (the M2 Max) and on par with the M2 Ultra chip that was launched in 2022. During its ‘Scary fast’ launch event in October 2023, Apple claimed that the flagship M3 Max chip offered “up to 50 percent” better performance than the M2 Max. The M4 chip series is also expected to offer improved AI performance — macOS 15 (alongside iOS 18) is expected to bring several new AI features when it is released later this year.

iPhone 16 Pro Leaked Renders Suggest New Design With Capture Button

iPhone 16 Pro is expected to be unveiled later this year in September. Previous leaks and reports about the handset have suggested several key specifications and some design changes. A new report has now surfaced that shares leaked CAD renders of the iPhone 16 Pro. The renders suggest the possible design of the handset. The upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is likely to include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. They are said to succeed the iPhone 15 series of smartphones that Apple introduced in September 2023.

Leaked CAD renders of the iPhone 16 Pro shared by 91Mobiles show a new button on the right edge of the handset, placed below the power button. It is said to be the Capture Button that will have capacitive touch and act as a photo or video capture trigger. The button may also help users adjust focus and zoom levels.

The report also claims that the Action Button on the iPhone 16 Pro could be larger than the one on the preceding iPhone 15 Pro. The report adds that the handset is likely to measure 149.6mm x 71.4mm x 8.4mm in size, which is larger than the older model. It is also tipped to get a 6.3-inch display with thinner bezels.

Moreover, the rear camera module of the iPhone 16 Pro is said to share a similar design as the iPhone 15 Pro. In the leaked renders, the module is seen housing three camera sensors, a LiDAR module, a microphone, and a flash unit. It is also expected to feature a 5x tetraprism telephoto camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The phone is also tipped to carry a larger 3,355mAh battery.

Recently, the iPhone 16 Pro has also been tipped to launch in Desert Titanium and Titanium Grey colours. The former shade is said to be similar to the gold colour option in the iPhone 14 Pro models, while the latter is likely to resemble the Space Grey option that was available with iPhone 6.

Apple Warns Eligibility for Alternative App Marketplaces Could Be Revoked If User Travels Outside EU

Apple added support for alternative app marketplaces on iPhone devices with the iOS 17.4 update, after much anticipation. However, it has now released a support document explaining the nuances around the eligibility of the feature. Surprisingly, the Cupertino-based tech giant said that it might stop access to marketplaces if a user travels outside of the countries and regions belonging to the European Union (EU) for a long period of time. The pre-installed apps will also not be updated for as long as the user has not returned to the EU.

EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) came into force on March 6, and as per the guidelines, Apple now allows users to download third-party marketplaces on iPhone and install apps through them. These apps will not have to pay any listing fee or use the tech giant’s payment processing system and pay an additional charge on that. However, it has also published a long post highlighting the eligibility criteria for users to avail of this feature, and factors that can lead to it not working.

As per the guidelines issued by the iPhone maker, the country or region of a user’s Apple ID must be set to one of the countries or regions of the EU. Additionally, the user must also be physically located in the region. The company will monitor that both criteria are fulfilled via on-device processing and claims it will not collect the device’s location. In case a user leaves the EU for a long period, they will lose access to some of the features including the ability to install new alternative marketplaces and updating the pre-installed third-party apps. However, the apps will continue to function. The tech giant also added that it will give a grace period for users who travel outside Europe for a short duration, although it did not define what constitutes short-term and long-term travel.

The post also underlined the list of countries and regions eligible for alternative app marketplaces. These are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.

Further, Apple has also stated that it will not provide customer support in case users face issues with alternative app marketplaces. Issues around privacy and security including scams, fraud and abuse will also not be addressed by the company. Notably, no third-party app marketplaces are available for iOS at the time of writing this.

Apple Pencil 3 With New Features Could Be Launched Later This Month: Report

Apple Pencil (3rd generation), or Apple Pencil 3 could be launched as soon as this month by the tech giant, as per a new report. An earlier report highlighted that Apple was gearing up to launch multiple devices in the next two months, out of which the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chipset have already been unveiled. Now, the Cupertino-based company could be gearing up to bring the next generation of Apple Pencil along with new features such as magnetically interchangeable tips and support for Find My app.

The information comes from a tipster who goes by the moniker Instant Digital on Weibo (via MacRumors). As per the report, Apple will introduce the 3rd generation Apple Pencil in March 2024. This also corroborates with an earlier report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who said multiple new devices could be introduced via press release between March and April. If true, this launch will finally succeed the 2nd generation Apple Pencil, which debuted in 2018. The tech giant did unveil a cheaper Pencil last year, but it was not an update to the 2nd generation model.

Not much is known about the design and the features of the Apple Pencil 3, however the report pointed out a number of upgrades it may receive. It could get a shorter body and a glossier finish, and might get multiple magnetically interchangeable tips that could be used to sketch in different styles. It may also get support for the Find My app that will enable users to find it in case it gets lost or misplaced, as per a report by 9to5Mac. However, it is not known whether it will support Precise Location feature. It is also expected to get the USB Type-C port.

Gurman’s report highlighted that two new iPad Pro models with an OLED display could also be launched soon. It is believed that the Apple Pencil 3 might arrive as its accessory. Additionally, there are rumours that a new Magic Keyboard might also be introduced alongside. The rumoured Apple tablets could be powered by the M3 chipset, a redesigned rear camera module, landscape-oriented front camera, a slimmer body, and more.
