Asus ROG Ally X Set to Launch in H2 2024 With Larger Battery, Higher Price Tag: Report

Asus ROG Ally X is set to arrive next month as an incremental upgrade to the 2023 ROG Ally from the Taiwanese firm. It will arrive with noteworthy upgrades to some components on Asus’ original handheld gaming console that made its debut last year, according to a report. The upcoming ROG Ally X will reportedly be equipped with the same 7-inch display and AMD processor found on the first-generation device, while offering more RAM and battery life, as well as support for larger storage upgrades.

The company teased the arrival of the Asus ROG Ally X in a YouTube video, where it suggested that the upcoming device would be equipped with notable hardware upgrades. In an interview with The Verge, Asus SVP Shawn Yen confirmed that the new handheld gaming console will arrive on June 2, packing a significantly larger battery — the most requested hardware upgrade — that could offer at least three hours of battery life.

The upcoming Asus ROG Ally X will also be equipped with more than 16GB of RAM, which is an upgrade over the first-generation console. Meanwhile, Yen also told the publication that customers will be able to upgrade the ROG Ally X with larger SSD storage, thanks to a longer M.2 2280 SSD slot — the 2023 model has a M.2 2230 slot.

Meanwhile, there’s no word on whether customer-reported issues with the SD card reader have been resolved, but The Verge states that the device will be equipped with a redesigned motherboard. As a result, the component could be located further away from the vents on the ROG Ally X.

The company will also equip the device with better grips, and optimisations to the joysticks, triggers, and the D-Pad, according to the publication. Other specifications such as the AMD Z1 Extreme chip that powers the first-generation ROG Ally and the 7-inch display are expected to be retained on the improved ROG Ally X model that is scheduled to arrive next month.

This periscope telephoto sensor comes with Zeiss APO certification.

Further, the Vivo X100 Ultra’s camera unit will also include Sony’s 1-inch LYT900 50-megapixel sensor with CIPA 4.5 level gimbal image stabilisation. Vivo has officially shared camera samples on Weibo, providing a glimpse of the upcoming Vivo X100 Ultra’s camera capabilities. The handset was developed internally by Vivo under the codename “Thanos.”

FCD100 was reportedly previously used in Sony’s professional cameras. The handset is believed to feature a third 50-megapixel LYT600 ultra-wide-angle rear camera. WhatsApp Gets Darker Dark Mode, Redesigned Navigation, New Icons and More Design Changes

WhatsApp has introduced a host of design changes to its mobile interface for both iOS and Android. Some new changes are quite subtle, while others are more discernable. There are also some additions to the layout like chat filters, which are said to help improve navigation. The company says these changes increase the functionality of the application while maintaining its simple and approachable elements. With the new changes, the iOS and Android layouts of the app appear more similar than before.

The company claimed in a blog post that after considering over 35 colour palettes, the new, consistent green WhatsApp interface was chosen. WhatsApp for Android has also received a darker dark mode, with higher contrast and deeper tones to help reduce eye strain in low-light conditions and increase legibility.

WhatsApp icons have also been updated with a rounded, outlined look and to match these, there are new animations and redesigned illustrations. The original default doodle background has also been subtly refreshed.

As part of the design overhaul, Android users also get the bottom navigation bar on WhatsApp. This feature was rolled out in March this year. iOS users get a new attachment layout with an expandable tray instead of a full-screen menu. The recently introduced chat filters with separate tabs for unread messages and groups are also included in the redesign.

An earlier report suggested that WhatsApp was testing a new zoom control feature which will allow users to switch between different zoom options when clicking images or recording videos directly in the application.

OpenAI Shares Model Spec, a Document Highlighting Its Approach to Building an Ethical AI

OpenAI shared its Model Spec on Wednesday, the first draft of a document that highlights the company’s approach towards building a responsible and ethical artificial intelligence (AI) model. The document mentions a long list of things that an AI should focus on while answering a user query. The items on the list range from benefitting humanity, and complying with laws to respecting a creator and their rights. The AI firm specified that all of its AI models including GPT, Dall-E, and soon-to-be-launched Sora will follow these codes of conduct in the future.

In the Model Spec document, OpenAI stated, “Our intention is to use the Model Spec as guidelines for researchers and data labelers to create data as part of a technique called reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). We have not yet used the Model Spec in its current form, though parts of it are based on documentation that we have used for RLHF at OpenAI. We are also working on techniques that enable our models to directly learn from the Model Spec.”

Some of the major rules include following the chain of command where the developer’s instructions cannot be overridden, complying with applicable laws, respecting creators and their rights, protecting people’s privacy, and more. One particular rule also focused on not providing information hazards. These relate to the information that can create chemical, biological, radiological, and/or nuclear (CBRN) threats.

Apart from these, there are several defaults which have been placed as permanent codes of conduct for any AI model. These include assuming the best intentions from the user or developer, asking clarifying questions, being helpful without overstepping, assuming an objective point of view, not trying to change anyone’s mind, expressing uncertainty, and more.

However, the document is not the only point of reference for the AI firm. It highlighted that the Model Spec will be accompanied by the company’s usage policies which regulate how it expects people to use the API and its ChatGPT product. “The Spec, like our models themselves, will be continuously updated based on what we learn by sharing it and listening to feedback from stakeholders,” OpenAI added.

WhatsApp Begins Testing Camera Zoom Control Feature, Sticker Creation Shortcuts

WhatsApp is rolling out two new features to beta testers on iOS that add new capabilities to the popular messaging platform. The first feature makes it much easier to zoom when using the in-app camera on WhatsApp, while the second feature allows users to quickly create new stickers from their Camera Roll, or use Meta AI to generate stickers, via new shortcuts. Both of these features are expected to make their way to all users on iOS and Android smartphones.

Feature tracker WABetaInfo spotted a new zoom control feature on WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.9.10.75. Users who have signed up to receive beta versions of WhatsApp for iOS via TestFlight can now update to the latest version to access a new camera zoom control button that will let them switch between different zoom options when clicking images or recording videos on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp currently allows users to pinch in and out on the viewfinder while using the in-app camera or, swipe up while holding down the capture button. Both of these options aren’t as straightforward or intuitive as using a dedicated zoom button, which is expected to roll out to all users in the future.

Earlier this week, the Meta-owned messaging service rolled out another feature to beta testers with the WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.9.10.74 update, according to details shared by WABetaInfo. Users who have installed this version will see Create and Use AI shortcuts when the sticker selection panel is open on WhatsApp.

The first shortcut will allow users to use an image from their Camera Roll to generate a new WhatsApp sticker using the application’s built-in sticker editor. Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that this option is also available to some users on the stable version of WhatsApp. The Use AI shortcut, on the other hand, allows users to generate stickers with Meta AI, the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) service.

Other features recently spotted in testing on beta versions of WhatsApp include a new ‘Recently Online’ list that — as the name suggests — lists contacts who were previously active on the app. Meanwhile, the service recently updated its colour palette on iOS, displaying green buttons and text throughout the app. It could eventually add support for alternative colour accents on the app, which were first spotted in development in January.

Samsung Galaxy F55 5G India Launch Set for May 17, Price Range Revealed

Samsung finally announced the India launch date and price range of Galaxy F55 5G on Thursday (May 9). The South Korean smartphone brand has been teasing the new phone for some time now. It will be available for purchase through Flipkart in two colour options. The Galaxy F55 5G is believed to be a rebranded Galaxy C55, that was unveiled in China last month. It is expected to run on Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC and could pack a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired fast charging support.

The Samsung Galaxy F55 5G is scheduled to go official in India on May 17 at 12:00pm IST. It is confirmed to be priced under Rs. 30,000 in the country. The handset will go on sale via Flipkart, Samsung.com and across select retail stores.

Flipkart has created a dedicated landing page on its website to tease the arrival of the new Galaxy F series smartphone. It is confirmed to be available in Apricot Crush and Raisin Black colourways with a vegan leather finish.

A recent leak revealed that the Galaxy F55 will be priced at Rs. 26,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage version. The 8GB RAM + 256GB storage model is said to be priced at Rs. 29,999, while the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant is tipped to cost Rs. 32,999.

As mentioned, the Galaxy F55 5G could debut as a rebranded version of Galaxy C55. The latter was launched in China in April with a starting price of CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 23,000).

The Galaxy F55 5G could have similar specifications to that of the Galaxy C55 if the former is indeed a rebranded model. The Galaxy C55 features a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels) Super AMOLED Plus display with a 120Hz refresh rate and runs on Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC. It has a triple rear camera unit, led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 50-megapixel selfie shooter, and packs a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired fast charging.

Google Chrome Could Add New AI Features to Assist With Webpage Reading and Search

Google Chrome added three new artificial intelligence (AI) features earlier this year. These features were powered by Google’s Gemini AI model and offered specific tools for customisation, tab organisation, and assistance in writing. These features are currently only available in the US. Now, Google has hinted at what some of the upcoming AI features might be. Based on an interview published by the tech giant, it appears that search and webpage reading might get AI powers soon.

On Wednesday, Google published an interview with Google Chrome’s Director of Engineering Adriana Porter Felt, who described the process of coming up with helpful AI features that could make using Chrome an easier experience. Felt said, “We’d been thinking about how to bring AI technology to the browser to make the typical actions you do every day — using tabs, using Search, writing in forms, reading webpages — a little easier.’ The director added that the entire Chrome team brainstormed ideas together.

Now, a closer inspection of the quote highlights that two areas, using Search and reading webpages, have not seen any new features so far. The last update added AI features for using tabs and writing in forms. It could be that the next features that the Chrome team builds could be based on these two areas of the browser. Search should be relatively easier considering Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) already exists and it could be integrated directly at the browser level.

But if the team does not want to take that route, another feature could be AI-powered filters that further organise the results based on the topic of the query. For example, a query for the best ice cream flavour could sort the results into groups of ice cream stores, YouTube videos, opinion-based blog posts, and miscellaneous.

Reading webpages is another area where the company might add a new feature. We have already seen AI-powered webpage summarisation tools within Microsoft’s Copilot and Samsung’s Galaxy AI. A similar feature could help users quickly understand what a long article on a website is all about.

However, it should be noted that these features are just speculations based on the comments by the Chrome Director of Engineering. The developers behind the Google browser might be working on an entirely different set of features. We will have to wait till Google officially announces them.
