Nothing Phone 2 Price, Storage Options Leaked; May Cost More Than the Nothing Phone 1 in the UK

Nothing, the Carl Pei-led UK startup is all set to unveil the Nothing Phone 2 on July 11 through a virtual event. As the UK brand gears up for the release of the successor to the Nothing Phone 1, speculation surrounding its features and specifications continue to surface online. Most recently, a French media report has suggested the European pricing details of the Nothing Phone 1 alongside the RAM and storage configurations as well as colour options. It seems like the Nothing Phone 2 would be costlier than its  predecessor due to the chipset upgrade. The flagship will run on Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and is said to pack up to 12GB of RAM and a maximum of 512GB of onboard storage.

According to a Dealabs report, the Nothing Phone 2 will have a price tag of EUR 729 (roughly Rs. 65,600) for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant and EUR 849 (roughly Rs. 76,500) for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage model. The handset will reportedly be available in black and white shades.

The report points to a significant price hike for the successor to the Nothing Phone 1. The smartphone costs EUR 469 in the European markets for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The higher cost can be attributed to the chipset upgrade on the Nothing Phone 2, which is confirmed to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Meanwhile, the Nothing Phone 1 is powered by a Snapdragon 778G+ SoC.

The Nothing Phone 1 was unveiled in July last year with an initial price tag of Rs. 32,999 in India. The company later increased the price of the smartphone by Rs. 1,000.

The launch date of the Nothing Phone 2 is set for July 11. The phone will be launched at a virtual event and it will be live streamed via the company’s official channels. The upcoming handset will go on sale in India via Flipkart, according to the company.

Amazon Duped Millions of Customers Into Signing Up for Prime, Says US Regulator in a Lawsuit

The US Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday accused Amazon.com of enrolling millions of consumers into its paid subscription Amazon Prime service without their consent and making it hard for them to cancel, the agency’s latest action against the ecommerce giant in recent weeks.

The FTC sued Amazon in federal court in Seattle, alleging that the company has “knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling in Amazon Prime.” In a statement, Amazon called the FTC’s claims “false on the facts and the law.”

Amazon has used “manipulative, coercive or deceptive user-interface designs known as ‘dark patterns’ to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically renewing Prime subscriptions,” the FTC said as it seeks civil penalties and a permanent injunction to prevent future violations.

The lawsuit is one of several actions taken by President Joe Biden’s administration intended to rein in the outsized market power of Big Tech firms as it tries to increase competition to protect consumers.

The FTC said Amazon Prime is the world’s largest subscription program, generating $25 billion (roughly Rs. 2,05,135 crore) in revenue annually. It offers fast, free shipping on millions of items, various discounts and access to movies, music and television series, as well as other benefits.

Prime members in the United States pay $139 (roughly Rs. 11,500) per year and drive much of Amazon’s sales volume. Prime, which has more than 200 million members worldwide, is crucial to Amazon’s other businesses including its streaming service Prime Video and its grocery delivery service.

In its statement, Amazon said, “The truth is that customers love Prime, and by design we make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up for or cancel their Prime membership.”

Amazon added it finds “it concerning that the FTC announced this lawsuit without notice to us, in the midst of our discussions with FTC staff members to ensure they understand the facts, context, and legal issues, and before we were able to have a dialog with the commissioners themselves.”

Wednesday’s lawsuit came on the day Amazon announced the July dates of its major sales event Prime Day.

The lawsuit said that under substantial pressure from the FTC, Amazon changed its cancellation process in April but that “violations are ongoing” and that it still “requires five clicks on desktop and six on mobile for consumers to cancel from Amazon.com.”

Amazon’s shares were up 0.2 percent in afternoon trading.

The FTC has been investigating sign-up and cancellation processes for the Prime program since March 2021.

Consumers who attempted to cancel Prime were faced with multiple labyrinthine steps to accomplish the task of cancelling, according to the complaint. The FTC complaint said Amazon used the term “Iliad Flow” to describe the process it began in 2016, referencing Homer’s epic poem about the lengthy Trojan war.

Amazon also committed “intentional misconduct” meant to delay the FTC’s investigation by providing “bad faith” responses to requests for documents, the agency said.

Insider Intelligence senior analyst Evelyn Mitchell-Wolf said that the “FTC is making an example of Amazon, but it’s quite common for companies to make it more difficult to cancel an account than it is to create one.”

“Amazon’s market power might work against it in this instance, as the FTC won’t have a hard time proving that consumers are, indeed, harmed if Amazon impedes their ability to exercise their choice to cancel their Prime membership,” Mitchell-Wolf added.

The FTC on May 31 announced a $5.8 million (roughly Rs. 47 crore) settlement with Amazon’s Ring doorbell camera unit after the agency said cameras had been used for spying on some customers. On the same day, the FTC said Amazon agreed to pay $25 million to settle allegations that it violated children’s privacy rights by failing to delete Alexa virtual assistant technology recordings at the request of parents and keeping them longer than necessary.

The new lawsuit is “emblematic of efforts by governments across the globe to rein in the excess influence of big tech,” including Amazon, Apple and Meta, according to Tom Forte, managing director at D.A. Davidson Companies.

But Forte also pointed to other retailers and subscription services that make it difficult to end memberships.

5G in India Seen Accounting for About 57 Percent of Mobile Subscriptions by 2028: Ericsson Mobility Report

The 5G subscription in India is estimated to have reached about 10 million by 2022 end, and is seen accounting for about 57 percent of mobile subscriptions in the country by the end of 2028, making it “the fastest growing” 5G region globally, according to Ericsson Mobility Report.

With the launch of 5G services in October 2022, the major 5G Indian market is witnessing huge network deployments under its Digital India initiative, it observed.

The geopolitical challenges and macroeconomic slowdown in some markets notwithstanding, communications service providers globally are continuing to invest in 5G, the June 2023 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report revealed.

“5G subscriptions in India reached about 10 million by end of 2022 and are estimated to account for about 57 percent of mobile subscriptions in the country by the end of 2028, making it the fastest growing 5G region globally,” it said.

The fifth generation mobile subscriptions are growing in every region and forecast to top 1.5 billion globally by the end of 2023.

The uptake of 5G subscriptions in North America has been stronger than expected in previous forecasts. The region had the highest 5G global subscription penetration at 41 percent at the end of 2022.

Global mobile network data traffic continues to rise with the monthly global average usage per smartphone expected to exceed 20GB by the end of 2023.

The report also highlighted the continued revenue growth in leading 5G markets.

“The global adoption of 5G technology has surpassed one billion subscriptions, bringing positive revenue growth for communications service providers in leading 5G markets,” Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, said.

In the past two years, the 5G introduction in the top twenty markets has resulted in a seven per cent revenue boost, Jejdling said, underlining a strong link between the increase in 5G subscriptions and service revenue.

Globally, around 240 communications service providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services and about 35 have deployed or launched 5G standalone (SA). The most common 5G services launched by service providers for consumers are enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), gaming and some (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality) AR/VR-based services, such as training and education.

The report also reveals that 5G continues to drive innovation in mobile service packaging.

Among communications service providers, it is increasingly common to offer bundles with various popular entertainment services such as television, music streaming or cloud gaming platforms.

About 58 percent of 5G service providers currently do so in various forms.

As per Ericsson, by 2028, 5G is estimated to account for almost 80 per cent of all FWA connections.

Ola Begins Construction Work of 100GWh Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu

Electric vehicle company Ola on Wednesday said it has commenced construction of its 100GWh gigafactory at its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu.

The company has installed the first pillar of its cell factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu today.

A gigafactory is a facility where equipment and components related to electrification and decarbonisation technologies are manufactured.

In February, Ola signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government committing investments of Rs. 7,614 crore for manufacturing electric cars, two wheelers and lithium cell gigafactories in the state.

Spread across 115 acre, the Ola Gigafactory is expected to commence operations by early next year with an initial capacity of 5GWh (Giga Watt hours). It would be scaled up to 100GWh in phases, a company statement said.

On commencement of operations at full capacity, it is claimed that the factory would be one of the world’s largest cell manufacturing facilities.

“This is a proud moment for us as we installed the first pillar of our gigafactory today. Our gigafactory will be a major milestone in India’s electrification journey, bringing us closer to making India a global EV hub,” said company founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal.

Ola has also invested in cell and battery research and development and has set up one of the advanced cell R&D facilities in Bengaluru.

As per the MoU signed with state government, the company would set up an electric behicle Hub which would house advanced cell and electric vehicle manufacturing facilities, vendor and supplier parks and the larger ancillary ecosystem for electric vehicles, at a single location.

Microsoft Launches New Computing Service, Aims to Help Speed Up R&D

Microsoft on Wednesday introduced a new computing service aimed at helping chemical companies speed up the research and development of new materials.

Azure Quantum Elements, as the service is called, relies on computing power to help chemical companies simulate huge numbers of possible combinations of atoms. The point is to use computers to explore possible new materials virtually and then simulate how those materials would interact with the real world.

The new offering uses a combination of existing quantum computers, artificial intelligence and conventional high-performance computing systems.

In a press release, Microsoft said that the system has helped some early customers speed up their development processes by as much as six months. Microsoft said that BASF, AkzoNobel, AspenTech, Johnson Matthey, SCGC and 1910 Genetics have been testing the system.

“Our goal is to compress the next 250 years of chemistry and materials science progress into the next 25,” Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said in a press announcement.

Microsoft also said it will offer a version of Copilot — its artificial intelligence system that helps software developers write code — that is specifically tailored for scientists looking to use its services.

The company also said that it had hit a milestone in developing its own quantum computer, saying it now has the ability to create and control a quantum particle called a Majorana fermion. Microsoft said it was also publishing a scientific paper on the milestone but gave few other details ahead of its announcement.

Google Filed Complaint Against Microsoft for Dominant Cloud Services Position: Report

Alphabet‘s Google formally filed a complaint to the US Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday saying Microsoft used its dominant position in enterprise software to push customers towards its cloud services, The Information reported on Wednesday.

Microsoft used the licensing terms in its Office 365 productivity software to lock customers into separate contracts with its Azure cloud server business, Google’s complaint said, according to the report.

There is intense rivalry between the two US tech giants in the fast-growing, multi-billion-dollar cloud computing business, where Google trails market leaders Amazon.com and Microsoft.

The sector has recently drawn greater regulatory scrutiny, including in the United States and in Britain, because of the dominance of a few players and its increasingly critical role as more and more companies shift their services to the cloud.

In March, Google Cloud had accused Microsoft of anti-competitive cloud computing practices and criticized imminent deals with several European cloud vendors, saying these do not solve broader concerns about its licensing terms.

Earlier this year, the FTC had said it is seeking information from the public on the business practices of cloud computing companies, including details on their market power, competition and potential security issues.

Google and Microsoft did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment, while the FTC declined to comment.
