Joyce Edwards, Sarah Strong + MORE

The future has arrived. The 2024 SLAM HS Girls All-Americans features an elite, versatile, top-ranked group of high school seniors that are already growing the game, emerging as stars, and set to take over college hoops next season.

Sarah Strong’s a dawg in the paint with the lightest touch around the three-point line. She helped lead the USA basketball women’s 3×3 team to the gold in the 2022 and 2023 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup, won 2024 Naismith High School Player of the Year and led her high school team to a perfect 30-0 record this past season.

Joyce Edwards’ insane versatility on both ends of the court led to her being named 2023-24 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She also led the Bulldogs to the Class AAA state championship and was named a 2024 McDonald’s All-American. Not only is Edwards a menace on the court, she has maintained a 5.08 weighted GPA in the classroom.

With crazy court vision, Jaloni Cambridge plays with passion and a quickness that doesn’t go unnoticed. She’s a McDonald’s All-American and played in the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup All-Star Five. But will never forget her run at the SLAM Summer Classic Vol. 5 in 2023.

Kateryna Koval’s competitiveness and dominance helped her claim 2022-23 Gatorade New York Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She has represented her home country of Ukraine for almost six years, and at the FIBA U16 Women’s European Challengers in 2021, she averaged a smooth double-double of 26 points and 14.2 rebounds per game.

Kiyomi McMiller is making waves both on and off the court. The McDonald’s All-American nominee and Jordan Brand Classic All-American can drop buckets with her flashy, smooth-style of play. McMiller made history as the first high school athlete to sign an NIL deal with Jordan Brand.

Byron Scott: Make LeBron James Lakers head coach

As the Los Angeles Lakers launch the search of a new head coach following dismissal of Darvin Ham and the whole coaching staff, three-time NBA champion Byron Scott proposes LeBron James for the vacancy.

The Lakers legend remarked how James does not trust his coaches, suggesting that the solution to that would if the superstar became a player/coach himself.

“My recommendation the next Laker coach and not out of the eight or nine names that I’ve heard, his name wasn’t on there, is make LeBron the coach,” Scott said on Undisputed.

Rory McIlroy won’t rejoin PGA Tour board after pushback

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rory McIlroy will not return to the PGA Tour’s policy board as expected because of other player directors’ concerns about bringing him back, McIlroy said Wednesday.

McIlroy, who resigned from the policy board on Nov. 14, was expected to replace Webb Simpson on the PGA Tour policy board and the board of directors of PGA Tour Enterprises.

“There’s been a lot of conversations,” McIlroy said ahead of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. “Sort of reminded me partly why I didn’t [stay on the board]. So yeah, I think it got pretty complicated and pretty messy.

“I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before. I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”

Simpson, 38, will finish out his term, which expires in 2025. Simpson said he had planned to step down from both boards to spend time with his family.

“I think the best course of action is if, you know, there’s some people on there that aren’t comfortable with me coming back on, then I think Webb just stays on and sees out his term,” McIlroy said. “I think he’s gotten to a place where he’s comfortable with doing that, and I just sort of keep doing what I’m doing.”

Along with Simpson, the other player directors on the tour’s policy board are Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods. Former tour member Joe Ogilvie is a board liaison.

McIlroy, the No. 2 golfer in the world, had joined the policy board in 2022 and was expected to serve through 2024. The 35-year-old cited personal and professional commitments in making his decision to leave the board late last year.

McIlroy’s surprising reversal comes at a time when the PGA Tour is attempting to negotiate a final agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which finances the rival LIV Golf League. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and policy board player directors met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas on March 18.

McIlroy has previously met with Al-Rumayyan to discuss the future of men’s professional golf. McIlroy said Al-Rumayyan wanted to do the “right thing” with PIF’s investment in golf.

He said some PGA Tour members have voiced concerns about potentially playing a global schedule outside the U.S. and whether to allow golfers who left for LIV Golf to come back to the tour.

With Simpson staying on the policy board, McIlroy said he is “still optimistic” that a deal with the PIF can get done.

“I think Webb staying on is a really good thing,” McIlroy said. “I think he’s got a really balanced voice in all of this, and I think he sees the bigger picture, which is great. My fear was if Webb stepped off and it wasn’t me that was going in his place, what could potentially happen? Yeah, I’m really happy that Webb has made that decision to stay on and serve out the rest of his term.”

McIlroy, who grew up in Northern Ireland, said both sides will have to compromise in good faith to get a deal done. He is frustrated that a deal hasn’t been finalized because “we’ve got this window of opportunity to get it done.”

While discussing what would have to happen to bring the fractured sport together, McIlroy invoked the Good Friday Agreement of April 10, 1998, which ended political unrest in Ireland and Northern Ireland that had occurred since the 1960s.

“Catholics weren’t happy, Protestants weren’t happy, but it brought peace, and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right?” McIlroy said. “That was in 1998 or whatever it was, and 20, 25, 30 years ahead, my generation doesn’t know any different. It’s just this is what it’s always been like, and we’ve never known anything but peace.

“That’s sort of my little, I guess, way of trying to think about it and trying to make both sides see that there could be a compromise here. Yeah, it’s probably not going to feel great for either side, but if it’s a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and we can all get back together, then I think that’s ultimately a really good thing.”

Giants’ Ronnie Barnes preaches resiliency in commencement speech

Ronnie Barnes, the New York Giants’ long-time senior vice president of medical services and head athletic trainer, recently delivered the keynote address at the spring commencement ceremony at his alma mater, East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina.

Barnes, who has worked for the Giants for nearly 15 years in various capacities, imparted some of the wisdom he gathered from his years with Big Blue.

“One lesson I’ve learned throughout my own journey is this: Resilience is not merely the ability to endure hardships, but it’s the power to transform those hardships into opportunities for growth,” Barnes told ECU’s graduating class of 2024 of approximately 3,800 students. “I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most resilient individuals in professional sports. From players overcoming career-threatening injuries to coaches strategizing in the face of adversity, I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformative power of resilience.

“But resilience is not reserved solely for the gridiron or the playing field, as you well know. It’s a quality that transcends boundaries and empowers us to confront the challenges of everyday life with courage and determination. It’s what enables us to pick ourselves up when we stumble, to push through the pain when it seems insurmountable, and to emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side. As you embark on this next chapter of your lives, I urge you to embrace the challenges that lie ahead with the same resilience and the same determination that has brought you to this very moment.”

Barnes graduated from ECU in 1975 and began working for the Giants shortly after. He has been around for all four of the franchise’s Super Bowl triumphs, including Super Bowl XLII when “resiliency” was their mantra.

Rodgers warns Rangers that Celtic are peaking at perfect time

Brendan Rodgers says Celtic are peaking at the perfect time as they prepare for a make-or-break Old Firm derby this weekend.

Rangers head to Parkhead on Saturday lunchtime trailing Rodgers’ men by three points at the summit of the Scottish Premiership and with an inferior goal difference.

A Celtic win would make it four straight for the Hoops and give them a six-point cushion over Philippe Clement’s out-of-form men with only two games remaining.

Rodgers told Celtic TV: “When I look at the injuries and disruptions we’ve had this season, last weekend was about there in terms of availability, fitness and where the team is at.

“It’s as good a place as we’ve been all season. When we arrive into this weekend’s game, this will be the best version of the team since I’ve been here.”

Skipper Callum McGregor looked back to his best after injury in the win over Hearts last weekend and shone in the last game between the sides at Celtic Park, while Japan international Daizen Maeda made the bench after a hamstring problem.

Referee Willie Collum will take charge of Saturday’s game, having been in the VAR role for the last derby at Celtic, which the home side won 2-1 in December.

Rangers claimed they should have been awarded a penalty for handball against Alistair Johnston and reports suggested Rangers requested Collum should not be in the middle for their games in future, a request which the Scottish FA “immediately rejected.”

Township of Cedar Grove awards Giants’ Tommy DeVito keys to the city

In a special ceremony held on Monday night in the Township of Cedar Grove, New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito was honored with the keys to the city.

“I’ll continue to be the ambassador and everything (I) need to be for this town,” DeVito said. “Anything you guys will ever need, let me know and I’ll be here for you.”

Born in Livingston, New Jersey, DeVito grew up in Cedar Grove and attended Don Bosco Preparatory High School before heading off to Syracuse for college. He transferred to Illinois in 2022 and signed with the Giants after going undrafted in 2023.

With both Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor injured last season, DeVito unexpectedly stepped in and a legend was born.

Tommy Cutlets, as he came to be known, appeared in eight games with six starts, compiling a 3-3 record while completing 64 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He added an additional 195 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

DeVito led the Giants to three consecutive wins against the Washington Commanders, New England Patriots, and Green Bay Packers from Week 11 through Week 14, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive at the time.

During that streak, DeVito’s Italian-themed celebration became a hit across the country and he grew in fame, even being talked about on various late-night shows.
