Odell Beckham Jr. may find his next team now that the 2022 NFL Draft is officially over.

With the 2022 NFL Draft firmly in the rearview mirror, marquee players like Odell Beckham Jr. will look to find a place to play in the next wave of NFL free agency.

The former New York Giants megastar saw his fading career be revived during the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl run last season. Though he tore his ACL right before halftime in a game he had a great shot of winning Super Bowl MVP, Beckham is on the mend and potentially on the move in free agency. While a return to the Cleveland Browns is not happening, where will Beckham end up?

Here are the best spots for Beckham to land in his long-drawn-out free agency this offseason.

New England Patriots

AFC East

Odell Beckham Jr. could be a shockingly good fit for the New England Patriots

Though the New England Patriots used their second-round pick on former Baylor Bears wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, what part of this sentence 100 percent convinces you it is going to work out in the end? An NFL Combine star from Baylor playing wide receiver for the Patriots. It does not matter if it is a triple or quadruple negative, just sign Odell Beckham Jr. pretty please.

In a weird way, Beckham might actually be a fantastic fit in New England. The dude loves ball and thrives playing in winning cultures. His personality may have to take a back seat, but if Cam Newton can do it, so can OBJ. Not only would he get to play for the greatest football coach to ever walk this earth, but he can look to build on his hall of fame case by catching balls from Mac Jones.

New England is snakebitten to hell when it comes to drafting wide receivers. While they used to have The GOAT quarterbacking them, Tom Brady ain’t walking through that door anytime soon. For now, it would serve the Patriots to bring in a savvy veteran who can take slants to the house to help bring Jones along. To keep up with The Joneses, look for the Patriots to consider Beckham.

The dollars may not make sense, but OBJ playing for the Evil Empire will be must-watch television.

3 best moves Kevin Colbert made in his final NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers got plenty of attention during the 2022 NFL Draft because of when they took a quarterback, but what were their best moves in the draft?

While it may not have been perfect for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2022 NFL Draft did yield plenty of interesting pieces from which they can start to rebuild their offense.

The Steelers may have received plenty of attention after drafting Pitt Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first round, but there were two other draft picks that could potentially have similarly important

Without further ado, here are the best moves made by the Steelers during the draft.

2022 NFL Draft: 3 best moves made by the Pittsburgh Steelers

No. 3: Drafting Kenny Pickett

Pickett is probably a bit of a project at quarterback. It seems like he may not be ready right in this exact moment, but that doesn’t mean that he was a bad choice for the Steelers, who are looking to replace Ben Roethlisberger. Critics will point to how much of Pickett’s college career is a bit underwhelming, but he proved to be a star during his final season with Pitt as he threw for 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns against just seven picks. If he can continue to develop going forward, the Steelers could have a pretty solid quarterback leading them.

No. 2: Drafting Calvin Austin III

Pickett is probably the most notable pick Pittsburgh made, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t the only noteworthy player drafted. Calvin Austin III might fly under the radar for some fans, but he’s fast and showed that he can be a dangerous receiver once he’s able to get some space. Picked up in the fourth round, Austin is bringing some impressive speed to Pittsburgh. Austin can clear a 40-yard dash in 4.32 seconds and had back-to-back 1,000+ yard receiving seasons in 2020 and 2021. He’s quick and will be someone for fans to keep an eye on.

No. 1: Drafting George Pickens

Arguably the best 2022 NFL Draft choice made by the Steelers was when they ended up selecting George Pickens. Now, there’s a pretty big caveat with Pickens in that he’s recovering from an injury that sidelined him for much of his 2021 season with the Georgia Bulldogs, but Pickens has proven to be pretty talented. At 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Pickens has a pretty solid frame and that helped him when he was able to play for UGA. The Bulldogs don’t really throw the ball around much, but Pickens caught 90 passes for 1,347 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career at Georgia. Assuming he’s healthy, he can help the Steelers rebuild their offense going forward.

10 teams that crushed it

The 87th edition of the NFL draft is a wrap. A total of 262 players were selected. So which 10 franchises nailed the three-day event?

It’s over. It’s all over.

Yes, the 2022 NFL Draft has concluded and all 32 teams have wrapped up months of work. Now comes the process of grabbing those college prospects that weren’t among the 262 selections in Las Vegas.

Hence, here’s a subjective look at who excelled over the past three days when it came to bolstering its roster.

10. Houston Texans

In the previous four drafts combined, the Houston Texans had selected one player. But that changed in a big way this year. Cornerback Derek Stangley Jr. (LSU) was chosen with the third overall selection. General manager Nick Caserio swung a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and moved from 13th to 15th, picked up additional picks and grabbed Texas A&M guard Kenyon Green.

The second round netted safety Jalen Petrie (Baylor) and highly-regarded wideout John Metchie III (Alabama). And any concerns about the latter’s torn ACL suffered late in the season are being put to rest by Metchie himself (via Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle).

9. Green Bay Packers

There has been plenty of angst surrounding this team the past two offseasons and for various reasons. Armed with 11 picks entering the draft, the Green Bay Packers would certainly look to fill the void left by the trade of wide receiver to the Las Vegas Raiders.

But general manager Brian Gutekunst addressed the club’s suspect defense in the first round by adding former University of Georgia standouts Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt. The Packers sent a pair of second-round picks to the rival Vikings and took wideout Christian Watson (North Dakota State) 34th overall. And the defending NFC North champions added depth to the defense and offensive line in the final five rounds.

Why Ben White is missing for Arsenal vs West Ham

An explanation for Ben White missing Arsenal’s clash with West Ham on Sunday has been provided.

The Gunners are set to face off with city rivals West Ham at the London Stadium shortly.

Arsenal will kick off in east London having been knocked off 4th spot by Tottenham, who smashed Leicester in one of the day’s early Premier League games.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side will once again go two points clear of their bitter rivals if they pick up a win vs the Hammers.

And West Ham have handed Arsenal a decent chance to do so, resting a number of key players in preparation for the Europa League semi-final second leg vs Eintracht Frankfurt next week:

Kent Bazemore on potentially returning to the Lakers

LeBron James is getting a ton of blame for the Los Angeles Lakers’ failures this season, but forward Kent Bazemore is coming to his teammate’s defense … telling TMZ Sports LeBron did everything he could to help the Lakers win.

Bazemore was also asked if there’s still some appeal for him to return to the team, and he said there “for sure” is.

“What I’ll say is nothing ain’t much better than being a Laker, right?” Bazemore said. “So, getting to see Kob numbers on the wall every day I went to practice was good inspiration for me. … There’s nothing like it, man.”

This season, Bazemore played in 39 games and averaged merely 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest while shooting 32.4 percent from the floor.

Could New England Patriots’ top draft picks be a referendum on relative athletic score? – NFL Nation

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Quick-hit thoughts and notes around the New England Patriots and NFL:

1. Relative athletic scores: The Patriots’ 2022 draft class spoke volumes about how Bill Belichick & Co. view the team’s deficiencies — specifically with a focus on speed in a game that continues to be played more in space.

Director of player personnel Matt Groh also pointed out how the Patriots have always placed a high value on toughness.

Whether the Patriots identified the right players to inject those traits into their roster will be determined in time, but how they came to the conclusion that guard Cole Strange (first round, 29th), receiver Tyquan Thornton (second round, 50th), and cornerback Marcus Jones (third round, 85th) were ideal targets was notable.

In short, the Patriots’ Class of ’22 — criticized in some circles because of the perception the team reached on players — might turn out to be the litmus test for how much stock teams should place in analytics and testing numbers when valuing players.

Relative athletic score, which grades a player’s measurements on a 0-to-10 scale compared to their peer group, is becoming more mainstream in football reporting, and the picks of Strange and Thornton provide a springboard to highlight them.

Strange, in particular, is off the charts.

When his measurements and testing numbers are compared to others at guard since 1987, he ranks seventh out of 1,298 prospects.

“He’s almost 6-[foot]-5, 300 pounds and runs sub-5 seconds in the 40 [-yard dash]. Benched 225 [pounds] 31 times. There’s not a lot of humans out there that are doing that,” Groh said Friday night.

Meanwhile, Thornton’s 4.28 time in the 40-yard dash is the fourth fastest by a receiver at the NFL combine since 2006.

Thornton’s relative athletic score is also promising, ranking 405th out of 2,785 receivers from 1987 to 2022. The speed is elite.

The trend continued on Saturday in the fourth round when the Patriots selected South Dakota State running back Pierre Strong Jr., whose 4.37 time in the 40-yard dash at the combine was tied for the fastest among running backs. Strong also had a high relative athletic score, with elite speed.

Of course, projecting traits has long been a part of scouting. Relative athletic scores don’t play football on Sundays, and Strange, Thornton & Co., wouldn’t be Patriots if they hadn’t already transferred some of their unique athletic gifts to the field as football players.

But their elite testing numbers, and how the Patriots now project those to the NFL relative to the other 31 teams when assessing value, was an obvious storyline of note.

2. Why not McDuffie? It is often said that a team’s draft is best assessed after at least three years have passed, and with the Patriots’ 2022 class, a top player to watch will be cornerback Trent McDuffie. Had the Patriots stayed at the 21st pick overall and taken McDuffie instead of trading down to 29, they’d likely be getting a lot of “attaboys” for their work in filling a top need with a player who wasn’t expected to be available.

So why didn’t they?

One NFL scout pointed to McDuffie’s shorter-than-ideal arm length (29 3/4) as a possible reason the Patriots didn’t race to turn in their card — especially since they have traditionally preferred to play press-man coverage on the outside (where some view arm length as critical). Weighing that against the value the Patriots received to trade down (getting a solid haul of third- and fourth-round picks), they took the trade, knowing there was a small handful of players (including Strange) they were comfortable selecting at 29.

3. Thornton’s speed: In selecting Thornton, the fastest wide receiver in the 2022 draft, the Patriots might have had this statistic on the mind — New England receivers ranked 25th in the NFL in separation on deep balls last year. They had only 1.6 yards of separation on throws 20-plus yards downfield, per ESPN metrics powered by NFL Next Gen Stats.

At the same time, one point Groh made is that the team views Thornton as more than just a burner running down the field. “This isn’t just a linear guy. You see him really be able to get off the line,” he said. “And for as fast as he is, to be able to see him get in the red zone and do some things, it’s not just speed, it’s 6-2, ability to get up and really pluck the ball out of the air.”

Longtime NFL tape analyst Greg Cosell, of ESPN’s NFL Matchup Show, had highlighted Thornton as a receiver worthy of more attention before the draft.

4. Early returns: The Patriots naturally hope Thornton and Jones develop into front-line options at receiver and cornerback, respectively, but not to be overlooked is their more immediate opportunity of helping the team in the return game. Thornton’s blazing speed could be a factor as a kickoff returner (he only returned eight kickoffs in college), and Jones is a top candidate to fill the void left by top punt returner Gunner Olszewski‘s departure. Over the past two seasons, Jones had 711 punt return yards and 12 punt returns of 12-plus yards — both the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision. In 2021, the Patriots ranked No. 18 in the NFL in kickoff return average (21.8 yards) and No. 6 in punt return average (11.3 yards).

5. Picks in 2023: A Friday night trade in which the Patriots gave up their late third-round pick (94) in exchange for Carolina’s late fourth-rounder (137) and a 2023 third-rounder showed how Belichick — with rock-solid job security — is often thinking ahead. The 2023 third-rounder essentially replaces what the Patriots previously traded for veteran receiver DeVante Parker. So when accounting for compensatory draft picks, and prior picks acquired from the Rams (Sony Michel) and Panthers (Stephon Gilmore), the Patriots have 2023 picks in the following rounds: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 7.

6. Don’t forget McGrone: In what was viewed by many as a deep inside linebacker class, the Patriots stayed away from it entirely in the draft. While it’s always dangerous to say that’s a direct correlation to how the Patriots view the linebackers already on the roster, Groh highlighted second-year player Cameron McGrone (2021 fifth round) as “kind of an additional draft pick” after not playing his rookie 2021 season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered at Michigan. Add in trade acquisition Mack Wilson and the re-signing of Ja’Whaun Bentley, and Groh said there’s a level of internal excitement with the linebackers. Also, safety Jabrill Peppers projects to play more in the box in certain packages, and fellow safeties Adrian Phillips and Kyle Dugger can as well.

7. Mac elevating: Strange said he received a welcome text message from quarterback Mac Jones, who invited him to dinner at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse on Friday. A native of Tennessee who was making his first trip to New England, Strange said the gesture made him feel like he was home.

Jones’ invitation reflects what some teammates relay has been evolving behind the scenes, with Jones showing increasing comfort stepping into a leadership role while also letting his own personality come out.

“He’s a great guy and just as funny,” center David Andrews told season-ticket members at the team’s annual draft party Thursday. “He also loves playing this game. He loves the grind of this game. The preparation. He’s such a smart guy. Being an undrafted guy, there’s not a lot of pressure on you. Being a first-round quarterback, I can’t imagine the pressure. And I can’t say enough about how he handled it.”

8. White not cleared: When the Patriots take the field for voluntary offseason workouts this month, veteran running back James White (hip) likely won’t be participating. White said at the draft party: “I still have a little while to go [after] a pretty rough injury.” If third-year running back J.J. Taylor wants to make a decisive move to show he’s ready for the role, he has a golden opportunity this spring.

9. Brooks covers Texas: Groh, the Patriots’ director of player personnel whose fire and passion percolated late Friday night in his media Q&A, classily highlighted the work of area scout Alex Brooks after the Patriots selected players from Texas-based schools in Thornton (Baylor) and Marcus Jones (Houston). Brooks, entering his fifth season with the Patriots, covers Texas as part of his broader Southwest responsibilities. He played football himself at West Virginia (2013-16), and spent the spring of 2018 coaching at John Carroll University before joining the Patriots’ personnel department.

10. Did you know? Strange, whose full name is Devin Cole Strange, is the first player from UT-Chattanooga to be drafted since offensive lineman Corey Levin went in the sixth round in 2017. Strange tops Terrell Owens (89th in 1996) as the highest-ever Moc drafted into the NFL, and is the second UT-Chattanooga player drafted by the Patriots. Running back Marrio Grier (sixth round 1996) was the other.

Game-worn Kobe Bryant rookie jersey to be auctioned online, $3M-$5M expected price range

Photo: Andrew Scholer / Los Angeles Times

A piece of history that is associated with the legendary Black Mamba will be up for a much-anticipated bidding.

A game-worn rookie year jersey of the late great Kobe Bryant is set to hit an online auction from May 8 to June 4.

The said No. 8 Los Angeles Lakers apparel was suited up by Bryant in back-to-back home occasions from the 1996-1997 regular season  – a game against the Utah Jazz way back April 13, 1997, and on April 17, 1997 versus the Sacramento Kings.

The basketball icon also donned the jersey in two postseason series games against the Jazz.

According to David Kohler of SCP Auctions, the gold gear of the hall of famer can range between $3 million and $5 million in the bidding war.

“We feel this could bring a record for any basketball jersey,” Kohler said, via Associated Press.

Kohler also noted that the anonymous seller of the jersey has kept the precious memorabilia for 25 years. He was approached by the said person after seeing an autographed rookie jersey of Bryant being sold for $3.69 million last year – the highest price that was ever recorded for a basketball jersey.

Kohler further provided that the item’s authenticity was verified by independent authenticators through photo-matching and comparing it to a 1997 trading card featuring Bryant wearing the jersey.

Bryant and eight other people including his daughter, Gianna, was announced dead in a tragic helicopter crash in Calabasas, California last Jan. 26, 2020. The five-time champion was recently named as a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team.
