ESPN names Giants’ Dexter Lawrence the NFL’s most physical D-lineman

With just three weeks left in the 2023 season, ESPN recently ranked the best NFL players at 101 different skills.

New York Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence was named the NFL’s most physical defensive lineman.

With a massive 6-foot-4, 342-pound frame, Lawrence uses his physicality and play strength to create havoc on the defensive front. He’s a disruptive force who has 46 tackles and 4.5 sacks this season.

Lawrence isn’t just a dominant force on the field, he is a leader along the defensive line. His athleticism and strength allow him to blow through opposing offensive lines and reach the quarterback to disrupt whatever he’s trying to do.

He doesn’t even have to make contact to have an impact, he just needs to be on the field. Lawrence’s mere presence is enough to make other teams focus on him and maybe spare some resources for Kayvon Thibodeaux, but that’s all they can do. If they focus too many resources on those two, opposing teams leave themselves vulnerable in other areas.

Drafted by the Giants in 2019, Lawrence has remained a fixture since. He rarely misses time on the field and has racked up 259 tackles (142 solo), 21 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 10 passes defensed in his career with Big Blue.

Dexter Lawrence continues to miss practice

The New York Giants enjoyed an off day on Friday with their final practice scheduled for Saturday ahead of a Christmas Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With most players away from team facilities, that meant little change in terms of injury status. However, the Giants still moved forward with a projected injury report.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was a projected non-participant due to a hamstring issue that has plagued him for several weeks.

“He’s still working through his hamstring,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters this week.

Even with an extra day off this week, Sexy Dexy seems unlikely to suit up on Monday afternoon against the Eagles.

The Giants’ full (projected) Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee), OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Lawrence Cager (groin)

Limited participant: DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), RB Matt Breida (hamstring), LB Carter Coughlin (neck), P Jamie Gillan (groin), S Xavier McKinney (illness)

Full participant: OL Justin Pugh (calf/neck), TE Darren Waller (hamstring), RB Gary Brightwell (hamstring), OL Matt Peart (shoulder)

New York Giants work out several punters, long snapper

The New York Giants reportedly worked out four players on Wednesday in hopes of fortifying their injury-riddled roster.

Cam Lyons is a long snapper who spent all summer with the Giants but was released during the team’s final cuts before the regular season.

Pat O’Donnell, Michael Palardy and Corliss Waitman are all punters with NFL experience the Giants brought in just in case Jamie Gillan (groin) can’t go this week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

None of the four were immediately signed by multiple transactions are expected in the coming day.

New York Giants preparing for new-look Philadelphia Eagles defense

The New York Giants will be the first team to test out the new-look Philadelphia Eagles defense when the two teams meet on Christmas Day down in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Eagles made a change in leadership on the defensive side of the ball by demoting coordinator Sean Desai and placing him with Matt Patricia as the defensive playcaller.

Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka — whose unit has averaged a paltry 15 points per game in their three meetings with Philly — draws the short straw in Week 16.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll knows Patricia well from their time in New England and Kafka spoke about the internal conversations regarding the Eagles’ switch in defensive play calling.

“I think Dabs touched on it a little bit yesterday but with Patricia now calling it and Sean (Desai) over the first half of the season, there’s some similarities, a lot of similarities,” Kafka said.

“Obviously, the personnel there, it stays consistent. Coach Patricia — I think there was a couple things that might have felt a little bit different, now into the second week, probably could anticipate a little bit more of things kind of being changed up. We’ve got to be ready for everything. Going to prep through — go through our schemes, go through our personnel groupings, and make sure we’re tied up there.”

The Giants are approaching it like they would any other situation they would encounter with any other opponent.

“You try to gather as much data as you can from this last week and see if there’s any tendencies there and then look at kind of the scope of the season and see where things have kind of been played through as well,” Kafka said,

“Again, when you have a new play caller, there’s a little bit of unknown and that’s okay, but we prepare our guys the best we can and get them ready for Monday.”

Meanwhile, all eyes were on the Giants’ trio of defensive tackles — Dexter Lawrence, A’Shawn Robinson, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, all of whom are banged up.

Lawrence and Nunez-Roches continued to sit out while Robinson was limited.

NFL experts make Week 16 picks

The New York Giants (5-9) will visit the Philadelphia Eagles (10-4) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Christmas Day.

Opening the week, the Giants were listed as 10.5-point road underdogs and it’s only gotten worse since then. As of this writing, the Giants are +12.

Let’s take a look at who some of the experts and insiders around the league are taking in the Week 16 matchup.

Expert Pick Score (if applicable)
Jeremy Fowler (ESPN) Eagles N/A
Mike Clay (ESPN) Eagles N/A
Jeremy Fowler (ESPN) Eagles N/A
Pete Prisco (CBS) Eagles 30-14
John Breech (CBS) Eagles 24-13
Jordan Dajani (CBS) Eagles 27-14
Nate Davis (USA TODAY) Eagles 30-20
Jarrett Bell (USA TODAY) Eagles 26-20
Bill Bender (Sporting News) Eagles  31-17
Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News) Eagles  33-13

The Eagles may be riding a three-game losing streak but there was no way anyone would pick them to lose to the Giants. Needless to say, the unanimous choice of Philly winning on Christmas Day comes as absolutely no surprise whatsoever.

All other experts and analysts agree with 100 percent — literally every single insided league-wide — picking the Eagles to drop the Giants on Monday afternoon, according to NFL Pickwatch.

Fans do give the Giants a sliver of hope with “only” 98 percent predicting a Philly victory in Week 16.

3 causes for concern in Week 16

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

With the Giants fresh off a game where they reverted back to the issues they faced at the beginning of the season, the Eagles will pose one of the bigger threats the Giants have faced all season.

The Giants have not faired well in recent memory against the Eagles and the last time the two teams met, the Giants were knocked out of the playoffs by the Eagles in a lopsided game on Philadelphia’s path to the Super Bowl last season.

After the Giants gave up seven sacks in Week 15, the Eagles will likely look to take advantage of that and it may be a long day for the Giants’ offensive line.

Regardless of the Eagles’ losing streak or the fact that the game is on Christmas Day, Philly fans will be out in full force.

Between the talent level of the Eagles and the hostile environment playing in Philadelphia presents, it may be a rude awakening for quarterback Tommy DeVito.
