New York Giants’ Tyrod Taylor thankful for another opportunity to start

The Tommy DeVito Era in East Rutherford is over. For now, anyway.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll named Tyrod Taylor the team’s starting quarterback for the final two games of the regular season, starting this Sunday afternoon against the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.

“I thought Ty did some good things in the second half of Philly so he earned the right to start this game,” Daboll said. “Let’s get ready for the Rams, really have nothing else to add to it. That’s where we’re at.”

Taylor relieved the struggling DeVito after falling behind, 20-3, at halftime against the Eagles in Philadelphia last week. Taylor led a comeback that had the Giants down by one score and the ball with a chance to win in the final minute but fell short.

Still, Daboll was asked his reasoning behind the decision.

“I just thought he did some good things, so he’s earned the opportunity this week,” he said.

Both DeVito and Taylor have handled the changing quarterback assignments with professionalism and understanding all season.

“It’s part of the business,” Taylor said on Wednesday. “Thankful for the opportunity. Looking forward to getting out on the field with the guys this weekend and competing.”

The 34-year-old Taylor is used to being flip-flopped around. He’s been a starter and a backup during his 13-year NFL career in several cities.

“Stay engaged, stay ready,” was his advice to all seeking to play quarterback in this league. “I mean as a quarterback you are literally one play away. Your preparation shouldn’t change, your attitude shouldn’t change. The quarterback is the leader, whether they want to be or not, so a lot of people look towards us during downtimes to see how we respond.

“Obviously, when everything’s up, everyone’s happy, but in down times, you look towards your leaders to see how you respond. So, that would be my message to any young player dealing with it, I’ve been through enough — not enough, I’ve been through a lot. I’ve had a chance to learn from each situation.”

Taylor now enters the final two weeks of the season once again aiming to prove to a QB-needy team out there that he can still assume the role of starter and help carry a franchise.

Dexter Lawrence, 4 others miss practice

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.

Because the Giants played on Christmas Day and are on a short week, head coach Brian Daboll limited the team to a walkthrough. They will conduct full practices on both Thursday and Friday.

Coming out of Monday’s game, the Giants were relatively healthy despite a few players (Darren Waller, Justin Pugh) getting banged up. Daboll said everyone would participate on at least a limited basis.

“We’re doing a walkthrough today so everybody will be participating in the walkthrough,” Daboll said.

The lie detector test determined that was a lie.

Several players sat out on Wednesday and several more were limited, including punter Jamie Gillan, who suffered a groin injury two weeks ago and a knee injury in the Giants’ loss to Philadelphia.

“We’ll see tomorrow but trending in the right direction,” Daboll said of Gillan.

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), TE Lawrence Cager (groin), NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (elbow), OL Ben Bredeson (quad), P Jamie Gillan (groin/knee), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle), OL Justin Pugh (elbow), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (quad), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), TE Darren Waller (knee)

Full participant: N/A

One player New York Giants would steal from Los Angeles Rams

The New York Giants (5-10) will host the Los Angeles Rams (8-7) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this coming Sunday afternoon.

That, of course, provides those of us here at Giants Wire the opportunity to hypothetically steal from the Rams’ roster in search of depth and/or talent upgrades for Big Blue for the second time this year.

In looking over Los Angeles’ roster, there’s a lot to choose from. Quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Puka Nacua, guard Kevin Dotson, tackle
Rob Havenstein, linebacker Ernest Jones, and defensive lineman Kobie Turner are all very tempting. Dotson is particularly tempting.

However, we all know where this is going…

Enter game-changing superstar Aaron Donald.

Donald, a nine-time Pro Bowler, seven-time All-Pro and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, is still one of the most dominant defenders in the NFL today and one of the most consistently dominant since the days of Lawrence Taylor.

Since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2014, Donald has not had a single season with a Pro Football Focus grade lower than 90.2 (2014, his rookie year) and he’s every bit as dominant against the run as he is against the pass. He does struggle when dropped into coverage but why even bother with that?

What more even needs to be said? Donald is one of the best players on the field each and every week and pairing him with Dexter Lawrence, who is arguably the only defensive player better than him, would create a completely game-wrecking duo.

What are your thoughts, Giants fans? Would you pick Aaron Donald or would you steal an entirely different player from the Los Angeles Rams?

Giants losing director of strength and performance to Florida

The New York Giants are likely to see some coaching staff turnover this offseason and the first domino has already fallen.

Jacob Rudner of CBS Sports reports that director of strength and performance, Craig Fitzgerald, is departing East Rutherford to join Florida, where he’ll lead the Gators’ strength and conditioning department.

Florida is expected to hire New York Giants director of strength and performance Craig Fitzgerald to lead its strength and conditioning department, sources informed Swamp247 on Sunday afternoon.

Fitzgerald’s hiring comes after Gators director of football strength and conditioning Mark Hocke was reassigned to focus on a “transition into the coaching element,” according to head coach Billy Napier.

With more than 25 years of coaching experience, Fitzgerald’s various tenures across the collegiate and professional levels have largely been associated with great success.

Fitzgerald joined the Giants in 2020 under then-head coach Joe Judge and survived the transition to the new regime of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

Throughout his career, both at the NFL level and in college, Fitzgerald has had great success in his various roles. However, he was unable to help the Giants buck their long-standing trend of injuries. They were still among the league leaders in each of his four seasons in control and will again be near the top of the NFL in man games lost this year.

Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Christmas Day, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 33-25, in a game that came down to the wire.

The big story coming out of Week 16 is the benching of rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito. He was relieved of his duties at halftime and replaced by veteran Tyrod Taylor.

DeVito was the star of the show leading up to the game and even received the FOX pregame treatment. However, head coach Brian Daboll decided he was on a short leash despite the already lost season, and you have to imagine they can not reverse course now.

Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ most recent defeat.

Offensive snaps: 63
Defensive snaps: 75
Special teams snaps: 29

In what are likely his final days in a Giants uniform, wide receiver Sterling Shepard saw just a single snap.

Defensively, linebacker Bobby Okereke and safety Xavier McKinney, despite their injuries, kept their respective iron man streaks going. With two weeks remaining in the regular season, they have taken all 100 percent of the team’s snaps this year.
