Did GTA 6 cost $1.5 billion? Rockstar rejected the viral figure but gave no total

GTA 6 may be extraordinarily expensive, but the widely repeated $1–2 billion budget is not confirmed and Rockstar pushed back on the $1.5 billion claim.

The claim that GTA 6 cost $1 billion, $1.5 billion or even $2 billion appears so often that it is frequently treated as an official budget. Rockstar and Take-Two have not published a total.

Recent reporting says Rockstar's head of publishing pushed back specifically on the suggestion that the game exceeded roughly $1.5 billion. That narrows one dramatic claim, but it still does not reveal the actual development and marketing cost.

Why game-budget numbers are slippery

Estimates may combine years of salaries, technology, office costs, marketing, online infrastructure and future content. Other estimates count only direct development. Two people can discuss “the budget” while measuring different things.

GTA 6 has been in production for years across multiple studios, so it is reasonable to expect an unusually high cost. Reasonable expectation is not permission to manufacture a precise figure.

Most expensive game ever?

It may ultimately deserve that title, but comparisons are difficult because publishers rarely disclose complete, consistently defined budgets. Inflation and long-term online support make the ranking even less tidy.

The verdict

The viral $1.5 billion number is not confirmed and has been rejected by a senior Rockstar executive, while the true figure remains undisclosed. Claims of $1–2 billion should be labeled estimates or rumors, not facts.
