Microsoft Wants OEMs Making AI PCs to Include a Dedicated Copilot Key in the Keyboard: Report

Microsoft has a stricter definition of what constitutes an artificial intelligence (AI) PC compared to Intel, as per a report. For the Windows maker, an AI PC requires a powerful processor such as the Intel Core Ultra for enabling AI capabilities, software-based Copilot capabilities, and a dedicated Copilot key in the keyboard, as revealed by an Intel executive. The last requirement is considered a strange one, as this disqualifies PCs that come with a dedicated AI processor, GPU, and a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), but not the Copilot key from the AI PC category.

Todd Lewellen, Head of the PC ecosystem at Intel spoke with The Verge in a press briefing and elaborated upon the matter. He said, “Our joint aligned definition, Intel and Microsoft, we’ve aligned on Core Ultra, Copilot, and Copilot key. From an Intel perspective, our AI PC has Core Ultra and it has an integrated NPU because it is unlocking all kinds of new capabilities and functions in the AI space. We have great alignment with Microsoft, but there are going to be some systems out there that may not have the physical key on it but it does have our integrated NPU.”

The difference in opinion between Microsoft and OEM manufacturers can give rise to a tricky situation as the Windows maker is one of the biggest players in the AI space, and with a hold on the operating system, it can be one of the definitive voices of which PCs may or may not get the on-device AI features it develops.

An easy solution is for OEMs to simply include the Copilot key, like most Windows-powered PCs already have a dedicated Windows key. However, this would exclude some in-between devices that have already launched with required hardware capabilities but no Copilot key.

For instance, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 which is available in the market and features Intel’s Core Ultra processor and its AI Boost NPU would not be considered an AI PC in Microsoft’s eyes. But, based on a newsroom post by Intel which says an AI PC “has a CPU, a GPU and an NPU, each with specific AI acceleration capabilities”, as well as Lewellen’s words, it fulfils all requirements of an AI PC. What becomes of such PCs is not known. Notably, Microsoft unveiled its Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 for businesses recently, and as the tech giant labels it the company’s first AI PCs, they feature Intel Core Ultra as well as a dedicated Copilot key.

Microsoft to Reportedly Introduce Arm-Powered Surface Pro 10, Surface Laptop 6 on May 20

Microsoft could introduce its Arm-based Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 during its May event, as per reports. The company recently confirmed that it will be hosting an event on May 20 via media invites. The event is focused on the tech giant’s artificial intelligence (AI) vision and it is said that during the event the company may introduce Surface devices powered by Qualcomm X series chipsets. Notably, Microsoft is also hosting an event on March 21, where it is expected that the Intel-powered Surface PCs could be launched.

According to a report by XDA Developers, the Arm-based Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 is expected to be introduced, alongside new user-centric AI features for the Microsoft Surface devices. The report also added that the new Surface products could be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chipset, making the PCs one of the first to feature the new SoC. Microsoft Surface Pro 10, Surface Laptop 6 to Reportedly Launch in March

Microsoft Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could debut later this month, as per a new report. The tech giant was rumoured to be working on its first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered PCs that could be integrated with the AI features expected to be rolled out to Windows 11 later this year. The Microsoft PCs are said to be launched with both Intel’s latest 14th-generation and Qualcomm X series chipsets. They are also expected to feature next-gen neural processing unit (NPU).

Citing unnamed sources in a report, Windows Central claimed that both Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could be launched on March 21. The first AI PCs by Microsoft are also reported to be equipped with both new Intel Core Ultra and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite-based chips. If true, this will be the first time that Microsoft ships its Surface Laptop with both Intel and Arm processor options.

While not a lot is known about the upcoming laptops, the report mentions some of its key specifications. The Microsoft Surface Pro 10 could feature an anti-reflective and brighter OLED panel with support for HDR content. It is also said to come with a new webcam with an ultrawide sensor. Surface Laptop 6, on the other hand, could get some design upgrades. It is reported to feature thinner bezels with rounded corners for the display and a new haptic touchpad. Additionally, Microsoft announced a dedicated Copilot key to feature in Windows laptops last year, and the laptop is expected to get it. The Laptop 6 is also said to bring a new set of ports including two USB Type-C ports and one USB Type-A port on the left side, and the magnetic Surface Connect charger could be placed on the right.

Apart from this, both devices could get improved battery life and performance. The report claims that the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could be made available in the market in two separate tranches. The first could be in April which will only include the Intel chip-powered models and the Arm models could arrive later in June.
