Xiaomi Reportedly Planning to Introduce New Series or Sub-Brand Aimed at Technology Enthusiasts

Xiaomi is reportedly working on a number of new devices that are likely to be aimed at technology enthusiasts. The Chinese tech giant could launch a new series of handsets or even unveil an entirely new sub-brand, according to a report, which claims that the lineup could include new smartphones and tablets. These devices are believed to offer a stock Android experience. The tech enthusiast segment has been largely dominated by smartphones from Google and OnePlus in India. However, Pixel handsets have been relatively absent from the country and OnePlus has seemingly moved to more mainstream offerings.

According to a report by The Mobile Indian citing unnamed industry sources, Xiaomi could be planning to target tech enthusiasts, a segment that the company has largely overlooked ever since moving away from its Android One smartphone lineup. The company previously launched Poco in 2018 for hardcore tech enthusiasts, which has since become a mainstream brand.

The report claims that the smartphones in this series will be powered by Qualcomm 700 series chips and run on stock Android. Xiaomi apps and other bloatware will reportedly be absent from these smartphones. Xiaomi is said to provide up to three OS updates for these devices and up to four years of security patches.

These smartphones are expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000. The cheaper models of this rumoured series are believed to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line models may pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 chipset. It is worth noting that Xiaomi is yet to officially announce any plans to launch a new smartphone series that is aimed at tech enthusiasts

As per the report, opinions appear to be divided on whether Xiaomi should revive the A series or come with an all-new series, or a sub-brand. The Chinese tech giant is said to be interested in this segment as OnePlus has seemingly not been focusing on the tech enthusiast segment. Additionally, Google‘s Pixel smartphones have been relatively absent from the Indian market — the company only recently launched the Pixel 6a smartphone, the first Pixel handset to launch in India since the Pixel 4a made its debut in 2020.

Since the Poco M5s is said to be a rebranded Redmi Note 10S, it could also feature a 6.43-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with 1,110 nits of peak brightness. Under the hood, the Redmi handset packs a MediaTek Helio G95 SoC paired with a Mali-G76 MC4 GPU. It includes up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

Poco F4 5G will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 SoC, the brand confirmed on Thursday. The new Poco phone is teased to get its global debut in India soon. Although the name of the phone indicates that it would come as the successor to last year’s Poco F3, the rumour mill suggests that it could just be a rebranded version of the Redmi K40S. The Redmi phone came with the same Snapdragon 870 SoC and features including a triple rear camera setup as well as a 120Hz AMOLED display.

The official Poco India account on Twitter released a teaser to confirm the presence of the an octa-core Snapdragon 870 SoC on the upcoming Poco F4 5G. The confirmation comes just a day after the brand announced the global debut of the new smartphone in the country.

Pricing of the Poco F4 5G is yet to be announced. However, the Redmi K40S came with a starting price of CNY 1,799 (roughly Rs. 21,000) for the base 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant.

Specifications of the Redmi K40S include a 6.67-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels) Samsung E4 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, triple rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 primary sensor, up to 256GB storage, and a 4,500mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. Poco C40 Tipped to Launch With Non-Qualcomm, Non-MediaTek SoC; Could Run on MIUI Go: Report

Poco is reportedly working on a new smartphone that could be launched as part of the company’s affordable C-series lineup. The purported smartphone is tipped to ship with an entry level JR510 SoC, instead of chipsets from well-known brands like Qualcomm, MediaTek, or Unisoc. The handset may also run MIUI Go, which could be a special version of the MIUI operating system that is shipped with the company’s phones. Poco is yet to officially announce any plans to launch the Poco C40 smartphone or its specifications.

According to a report by XDA developers citing its senior member and developer Kacper Skrzypek (@kacskrz), the Poco C40 will not use the same Snapdragon or MediaTek chipset. The Redmi 10C (C3Q), which shares a similar model number as the purported Poco C40 (C3QP), is equipped with a Snapdragon 680 SoC. However, the purported Poco C40 will use a JR510 chipset from a company called Treswave, according to the developer.

Meanwhile, the report also cites a previous Geekbench listing for a device codenamed “frost” that also comes mentions the same model number C3QP. According to a recent report by Xiaomiui, a smartphone with the model number 220333QPG was spotted on the FCC website. Gadgets 360 was independently able to verify the listing for the handset.

A new software flag spotted in the MIUI firmware by Skrzypek called IS_MIUI_GO_VERSION also suggests that the Poco C40 may run a special version of MIUI, unlike other handsets from the company. While neither Poco nor Xiaomi have announced any details of a MIUI Go skin, the developer notes that the flag appears with the IS_MIUI_LITE_VERSION, which is used to restrict some features on entry level devices — MIUI Go could also be a similar resource saving mode for less powerful handsets, or a modified version of Android (Go edition), according to the report.
