Even if New York Giants wanted Justin Fields, they had no shot

Many pundits, fans, and interested parties were lobbying for the New York Giants to take a shot at acquiring Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers this past weekend for a conditional sixth-round draft pick, prompting a social media onslaught of people questioning their team’s effort to acquire the former first-round pick.

The answer was revealed in an article by Jaclyn Hendricks of the New York Post on Monday morning.

Former Bears quarterback Justin Fields wanted Pittsburgh alone as his next NFL home.

Before the Bears traded Fields to the Steelers on Saturday, four NFL teams inquired about the 25-year-old quarterback, whose camp “asked for him not to be traded there” as he “wanted the Steelers,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.

The four suitors were not specified.

Again, no one is sure if the Giants made an inquiry, which is a moot point since Fields appeared to want to play in Pittsburgh no matter what.

The Giants signed Drew Lock on March 14 to a one-year, $5 million free agent deal. One has to wonder if they rebuffed on an attempt to trade for Fields before they made that decision.

Fields will earn $1.6 million with the Steelers this year and will play behind Russell Wilson in training camp barring anything unforeseen.

Russell Wilson to sign with Steelers after visit with New York Giants

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson revealed late on Sunday night that he intends to sign a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That deal will become official later this week when Wilson is released by the Denver Broncos.

Wilson’s decision to sign with the Steelers comes just days after an “exploratory meeting” with the New York Giants.

Wilson and the Steelers were long deemed a potential fit and the 35-year-old likely saw a clearer path to the starting role in Pittsburgh than he did in New York.

The Giants, for better or worse, remain publicly committed to Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback after he was signed to a four-year, $160 million deal last offseason. He is currently recovering from a neck injury and torn ACL, but general manager Joe Schoen is optimistic he can return in time for training camp.

That won’t preclude the Giants from adding a quarterback or two this offseason — they have been transparent about their need to do so.

Tyrod Taylor is an impending free agent and although the door remains open for him to return, there’s no guarantee that happens.

The Giants also hold the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Steelers perform CPR celebration days after Damar Hamlin collapse

Not the best timing.

During the Steelers’ 28-14 win over the Browns at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, Pittsburgh linebacker Alex Highsmith received a questionable CPR celebration after sacking Deshaun Watson in the game’s fourth quarter.

The celebration comes less than a week since Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field while playing against the Bengals. The safety received life-saving CPR after he went into cardiac arrest.

Immediately after the celebration, social media users began giving their takes. One football fan mocked Pittsburgh by calling the action “real classy” after Hamlin’s incident.

Radio host Isaac Wenzel questioned what he just saw and asked: “Did a Steelers player just do CPR in a big play celebration?”

“The Gunz Show” host Mike Gunz chimed in as well, saying “Of all weeks… not a great look. Yikes.” He later added Highsmith “obviously didn’t have any ill intention towards Hamlin. Just saying it happened and the timing wasn’t the greatest.”

Despite the celebration, Highsmith has been supportive of Hamlin’s recovery with the linebacker posting that he is “praying” for the 24-year-old safety on Twitter.

Many NFL teams, including the Bills’ division rival Jets, honored Hamlin on Sunday.

According to the Bills, Hamlin recently had his breathing tube removed and was cheering on Buffalo during its regular-season finale win against the Patriots.
