WhatsApp Testing Link Privacy Feature; Working on Picture-in-Picture Support on iOS: Reports

WhatsApp has reportedly started rolling out a new privacy feature. This helps users choose the privacy level of the links that are shared in their chats. The feature has not yet been publicly announced, but it has been spotted on some beta testing accounts. WhatsApp is also said to be developing a new video-viewing feature within the app. Recently a report claimed that the company is working on a locked chats feature for linked devices, and it is expected to be available in a later update. WhatsApp initially rolled out the Chat Lock feature for smartphones in May 2023.

According to an Android Police report, WhatsApp has started rolling out a link privacy feature to some beta testers. Users can choose to turn off link previews with this feature which means there will be no thumbnail preview or any other data related to the article alongside the link. This will not reveal any overt information regarding the link to anyone attempting to pry over the chats.

This feature is also expected to help declutter the chats and make them easier to navigate. More importantly, it is also expected to prevent data leaks. WhatsApp beta testers can access this feature under the Disable link previews option by tapping on Privacy > Advanced in WhatsApp’s settings menu. Gadgets 360 was able to confirm the feature is enabled on the latest beta version of WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, a report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo claimed that the company is developing a new video viewing feature. This would allow users to view videos shared amongst contacts on the app in a picture-in-picture segment within the app. This is similar to the picture-in-picture feature that is available when watching YouTube and Instagram videos shared on WhatsApp.

The report noted that this picture-in-picture viewing for WhatsApp media videos is only available within the WhatsApp application, not over any other apps. This means that with this feature, you can watch a video that one of your contacts sent, come out of the chat and interact in other chats or groups within WhatsApp, while the concerned video continues playing in a smaller window. It also added that this feature is currently being worked on and is not ready to even roll out to beta testers. So, it may not see a public release in the near future.

YouTube’s Picture-in-Picture Mode Could Be Available for Non-Premium Users Outside the US Soon

YouTube started rolling out its PiP (Picture-in-Picture) feature for a wider audience back in 2021. This popular feature of the video streaming app allows users to watch videos while accessing other apps on their device. YouTube users in markets outside the US require a Premium subscription to access the PiP functionality. But this could change in the future as multiple posts on social media platforms indicate that non-premium users in Europe are currently getting access to YouTube’s PiP functionality.

Multiple threads on Reddit suggest that YouTube is rolling out PiP mode for non-subscribers outside the US. The posts include videos of the feature to add credibility to the claims, showing a mini-player in a floating window for music videos while using other apps on their devices. Users largely from the Europe region seem to have spotted the PiP feature on their devices.

YouTube is yet to reveal plans to expand PiP to non-subscribers outside the US. So, this information should be considered with a pinch of salt. Google is speculated to be testing PiP with a select group of non-Premium European users. The accidental rollout could be attributed to unknown bugs as well.

However, a recent comment from YouTube’s X account contradicts this claim. It states that PiP outside the US is currently limited to Premium subscriptions. As per YouTube’s support page for PiP, users outside the US will have to subscribe to Premium to access it.

Google announced Picture-in-Picture support for all YouTube Premium subscribers on iOS worldwide including India back in 2021. On Android, the multitasking feature was available for quite some time.

YouTube Premium in India costs Rs. 129 per month. Google is offering a one-month free membership plan for new users and a Rs. 79 monthly plan for students. The family plan that allows addition of up to five members in the household costs Rs. 189. Google is charging Rs. 1,290 for a yearly plan, while a three-month plan comes for Rs. 399. Besides PiP, YouTube Premium offer benefits like ad-free content, offline watching, downloads, and access to YouTube Music Premium.

Google Meet Picture-in-Picture Feature Gets Several New Improvements: All Details

Google has announced several improvements to Meet’s picture-in-picture mode bringing in more engaging features. The new update will offer easy interaction as well as navigation on the platform. The development has been shared via a Google blog post. The improvements are available to all Google Workspace customers as well as users with personal Google Accounts. Earlier, users were allowed to turn on or off the camera or microphone or exit the meeting in PiP mode. However, the latest update adds new functionalities.

Google in its blog post shared that they are improving the Google Meet picture-in-picture mode to make it more engaging and feature-rich. It has added the ability to raise a hand directly from the picture-in-picture window if users want to say something or ask a question during the meeting. It has also introduced the in-meeting chat within the picture-in-picture mode. Google has also enabled users to turn on or off the captions directly from the picture-in-picture window. This will help users to enable or disable captions without disrupting the meeting.

Additionally, the new improvements also include the ability to resize the picture-in-picture view letting participants adjust the size of the window according to their preferences. That’s not all, it also includes flexible layouts.

Notably, the Google Meet PiP improvements will start rolling out to users from June 7 and will be available to all in a phased manner within the next 15 days. The improvements are available to all Google Workspace customers as well as users with personal Google Accounts.

Earlier in April, Google Meet received a 1080p video option allowing users to set their Google Meet video resolution to 1080p. The feature is available to all eligible Workspace users as well as Google One subscribers with 2TB or more storage space on their devices. Interestingly, the new full-HD resolution option is only for Google Meet on the Web when using a computer with a 1080p camera.

WhatsApp Picture-in-Picture Feature for Video Calls Rolling Out to iOS Users: All Details

WhatsApp for iOS is receiving an update that will allow iPhone owners to multitask on their phone while on a video call. Unlike the Android version of the app, which has supported multi-tasking while on video calls for ages, WhatsApp for iOS would pause a user’s video stream when the app was minimised or the user switched to another app. Now, iPhone users will see a floating picture-in-picture (PiP) window with a minimised version of the window, allowing them to access other apps on a video call.

The popular messaging service announced that it was adding support for the PiP feature on iOS via the release notes for the latest stable version on the App Store. “With support for iOS Picture in Picture (PiP), you can now multitask during a WhatsApp call without your video being paused,” the changelog reads. Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that the feature was enabled on two iPhone models after updating to WhatsApp for iOS 23.3.77.

It is worth noting that Apple added support for PiP mode in 2020 with the release of iOS 14, while Google added support back in 2017, when it rolled out Android 8, popularly known as Android Oreo. Third-party Android apps have received support for PiP mode faster than their iOS counterparts — YouTube users on iOS were finally able to minimise video playback to a floating window in the second half of 2022.

Meanwhile, the update also adds support for captions while sending documents on WhatsApp for iOS. The app previously allowed users to add captions to images and video, and users can now add context to documents while sharing them.

Users on iOS will also be able to enter longer subjects and descriptions for group chats, after updating to the latest version of WhatsApp. The company rolled out these improvements to the Android version of the app earlier this week — along with the ability to share 100 images or videos at a time, which doesn’t appear to be included as part of the latest update or iOS.

WhatsApp also states that users can create avatars as stickers and their profile photo, but it is worth noting that the company first announced the rollout of this feature, along with support for 36 customisable stickers based on user-generated avatars, in December.

Google Meet Gets Picture-in-Picture, Multi-Pin Video Options on Chrome Browser

Google Meet gets Picture-in-Picture mode on Chrome. Meet has been one of the most preferable online platforms for official meetings and educational classes. Now the search giant has added a nifty picture-in-picture mode to Meet, which will allow users to see up to four video tiles of meeting attendees in a floating window on top of other applications. Additionally, Google Meet also gets a new multi-pinning feature on Chrome.

Google Meet is getting new features on Chrome. Google took it to its official blog to announce the availability of picture-in-picture mode on Meet for Chrome browsers. Users will now be able to see up to four tiles of meeting attendees while taking a Google Meet call on the web.

The Picture-in-Picture option is accessible by tapping the three-dot menu icon next to the hang-up button on the Google Meet app on Chrome.

In addition to this, the online meeting platform also brings multiple pinning video features. Users can now pin multiple videos feeds instead of one. This feature will give access to adjust the view on the app, according to the company.

“We hope these features make it easier for presenters and meeting attendees to stay engaged with their meeting,” Google commented on the occasion.

The picture-in-picture and the multi-pinning options for Google Meet users have started rolling out on June 16, and are available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers. It can also be availed by the users who use personal Google Accounts.

Google Meet has recently received an automatic transcription feature for educators signed up to Google’s Workspace for Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade plans. The company also brought polls and Q&A sessions to teachers who use Google Meet to live stream their lessons, potentially opening up more opportunities for interactivity.

Google I/O 2022: Improved Picture-in-Picture Mode, New Features Coming to Android TV as Users Cross 110 Million

Android TV now has over 110 million monthly active users (MAU), Google revealed at its annual developer conference on Thursday. The company has announced several new features and tools coming to the next versions of Google TV and Android TV that are aimed at improving performance and quality, while improving accessibility and enabling multitasking. While Google is yet to reveal the release date for Android TV 13, the company recently provided access to the second Android 13 beta for Android TV ahead of Google I/O 2022.

According to a post on the Android Developers blog, Android TV and Google TV are currently available on devices of more than 300 partners globally — accounting for 7 out of 10 smart TV OEMs and over 170 ‘pay TV’ (or subscription television) operators. Android TV OS now has over 110 million MAU and offers over 10,000 apps, according to the company. Google is also encouraging developers to integrate platform features like the WatchNext API (application programming interface) into their apps.

As part of the Android 13 update for Android TV, developers can use the AudioManager to ‘anticipate’ audio routes to better understand which playback modes are available. The company is also bringing improvements to multitasking in the form of an updated picture-in-picture (PiP) API, which uses the same API as Android smartphones. Google first introduced official support for PiP mode with Android 8. With the new, updated PiP mode, users will be able to access an expanded mode that shows more videos from a group call.

Android TV will also gain support for a docked mode to prevent PiP windows covering content in other apps by seating them separately on the edge of the display. Meanwhile, a ‘keep-clear’ API will let developers specify important parts of full-screen apps that should not be covered by PiP windows. On the accessibility front, the OS will add support for different keyboard layouts including QWERTZ and AZERTY, and users will be able to enable audio descriptions across apps.

With the upcoming Android 13 update, users can expect to see user and children profiles, allowing for personalised recommendations for each viewer. The update is also expected to bring support for using a smartphone as a Google TV remote to move around and control volume, type using the phone’s keyboard or activate the Google Assistant. Users will also be able to seamlessly cast content to Google TV, a feature that has been supported on Android TV via Chromecast.
