O.J. Simpson offers his take on the Giants-Saquon Barkley situation

Almost everyone has an opinion on the Saquon Barkley situation these days. Both current and former players have chimed in on the ‘mistreatment’ of star running backs by NFL teams, claiming they are being minimized both on the field and off.

Barkley nor either of his fellow franchise-tagged running backs this offseason — Dallas’ Tony Pollard and the Raiders’ Josh Jacobs — were signed to long-term deals, which means they’ll likely end up playing the season for the $10.1 million franchise tender salary.

The latest former running back to voice their opinion on the matter is Hall of Famer O.J. Simpson. Yes, that O.J. Simpson.

Very few take Simpson seriously any longer but that hasn’t stopped him from dishing on current events. Simpson believes all three players deserve better.

“They (the Giants) will not win without Saquon having a good, healthy season,” said Simpson, in a Twitter post from poolside somewhere.

Simpson could be right. But then he veers off saying that Barkley and the others deserve ‘$15-16 million at the minimum’ which leads us to believe he hasn’t been following the running back market and its deflation this offseason.

Simpson also admits that he doesn’t know what the three backs were offered by their teams. Barkley, as we know, was offered upward of $12-14 million last fall by the Giants. His reps rejected the offer and the running back market has cratered since.

New York Giants sign RB James Robinson: 5 things to know

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

If Barkley plays and stays healthy all year, the Giants should have enough depth to get through the season. With journeyman Matt Breida, rookie Eric Gray and veteran Gary Brightwell, the Giants are fairly set.

If Barkley sits out the year, Robinson could factor in. He is an experienced and versatile back whose career could be on the rebound and he will challenge the group for playing time. He could do that as a backup as well.

New York Giants sign RB James Robinson

With Saquon Barkley’s future uncertain, the New York Giants added a little bit of insurance on Friday, signing running back James Robinson.

The 24-year-old Robinson was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Illinois State in 2020. He spent three seasons with the Jags before joining the New York Jets last season.

Robinson signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the New England Patriots during free agency but he was released on June 12.

In 39 career games (32 starts), Robinson has rushed for 2,262 yards and scored 18 touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. He’s also caught 91 passes for an additional 617 yards and five touchdowns.

The 5-foot-9, 219-pound Robinson had his best season as a rookie, gaining 1,414 yards from scrimmage and scoring 10 total touchdowns. He was named to the PWFA All-Rookie Team.

Robinson earned a 59.7 Pro Football Focus grade in 2022. His best season came as a rookie, earning a PFF grade of 72.9.

With the Giants, Robinson joins a stable of running backs that includes Matt Breida, rookie Eric Gray, Gary Brightwell and Jashaun Corbin.

New York Giants sign WR Cole Beasley

The New York Giants held a series of workouts on Friday and among those in East Rutherford was veteran wide receiver Cole Beasley. And as it turns out, he won’t be leaving town.

The Giants announced they have signed Beasley ahead of training camp, adding them to their horde of receivers.

With the Giants, Beasley will reunite with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. This comes after the duo attempted to sign Beasley last season.

The 34-year-old Beasley was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent out of SMU in 2012. After seven seasons in Arlington, he joined the Bills in 2019 and spent three seasons there before splitting time between Buffalo and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.

In 153 career games (51 starts), Beasley has hauled in 556 receptions for 5,744 yards and 34 touchdowns, adding seven yards on the ground, 19 yards on kick returns, and 220 yards as a punt returner. He earned a 62.2 Pro Football Focus grade in 2022 with his career-best coming in 2016 (87.2).

Beasley did earn a PFF grade of 84.9 just two years ago.

With the Giants, Beasley joins a deep slot group that also consists of Parris Campbell, Sterling Shepard, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Jamison Crowder. However, it’s possible that both Shepard (ACL) and Robinson (ACL) start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

In addition to Beasley, the Giants also hosted linebackers Nick Vigil and Sam Eguavoen, defensive linemen Brandin Bryant and R.J. McIntosh, cornerback Nevelle Clarke, quarterback Jake Luton, and wide receivers Justin Marshall and Milton Wright for workouts.

Could Giants rookie John Michael Schmitz help ‘shape 2023 season?’

New York Giants rookie John Michael Schmitz was recently named an under-the-radar player who could shape the 2023 season by CBS Sports.

Surprise! Another second-round center with key responsibilities immediately. Schmitz and Daniel Jones will have to mesh quickly after the Giants lost both of their main center options — Jon Feliciano and Nick Gates — in free agency.

Many had the second-round center as a top interior offensive lineman and the No. 1 overall center in the 2023 NFL draft class. The Minnesota product was a steal for Big Blue late in the second. He was an anchor for an amazing Gophers offensive line that helped lead one of the best rushing offenses in college football in 2022.

It feels like a broken record at this point but the Giants enter every offseason with the offensive line as one of the biggest needs on the team. Now in 2023, the offensive line not only has the potential to improve but also be one of the better units on this team.

With the emergence of Andrew Thomas last season, New York has one of the best left tackles in football. If Evan Neal sees a similar leap this season, Daniel Jones will no longer have to worry as much about rushers off the edge.

Now, if Schmitz plays like the Day 1 center he is panned to be, the Giants will have a solid young core to protect their $160 million quarterback. With simply average guard play and a proper RPO scheme (similar to the one Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka ran last year), this offensive line has the ability to cause some problems for defenses in 2023.

New York Giants aren’t doing right by Saquon Barkley

Tiki Barber, the New York Giants all-time leading rusher, says the team isn’t doing right by their current star running back, Saquon Barkley.

“He has a lot of choices, and none of them are good for him,” Tiki said on his daily radio program on WFAN in New York.

“Choice No. 1, like Josh Jacobs, sit out. That makes the Giants worse. That sucks for the Giants, it sucks for Saquon Barkley, it’s a bad option, but it’s the only one that he can make a solid point about with the situation. He could sit out training camp, make a statement, but what does that really do? The Giants would be fine because he’s available, and he doesn’t get anything.”

Barkley was assigned the franchise tag in March, which is worth a guaranteed $10.1 million for this season should he sign the tender.

The two-time Pro Bowler has refused to do that in hopes of landing a longer-term deal. But that plan went up in smoke as no such deal was reached at by Monday afternoon’s deadline.

“I think he’s contemplating what he should do and what would be most impactful,” continued Barber. “He has one choice that’s meaningful, and that is to report on time, be the best teammate you can be, crush it, help the Giants go to the postseason, maybe push into the playoffs, and prove it, but not get paid by the Giants.

“There is nothing you can do other than show up and ball.”

Barkley will not be fined for sitting out training camp and/or the Giants’ three preseason games (which he probably wouldn’t have played in anyway), but will not get paid for any regular season games he sits out of.

Tiki sees this stance by the Giants — which on the surface doesn’t seem fair, but from a 2023 NFL business standpoint is the right move — as the ‘beginning of the end’ for Saquon as a Giant.

The Giants have the option of ‘franchising’ Barkley again next year at an estimated salary of $13 million but many experts are saying that doesn’t seem likely.

“The Giants aren’t doing right by him now. Why would they do right by him a year from now when he’s a year older? The Giants aren’t going to pay him,” Barber said.

A healthy, dominant season could change that. Maybe.

John Mara commiserates with New York Giants fans over night games

Late New York Giants owner Wellington Mara used to sit in his office and read letters sent in by fans, both on how to improve the team and the total fan experience.

Wellington called them his ‘customers’ and he always felt he owed them the same loyalty they had shown him and his business.

John Mara, the current CEO of the team, is taking a page out of his father’s book and answering as many letters from the Giants’ massive fan base as he can.

In a recent letter from a fan complaining about the Giants’ 2023 schedule, which contains three night games at home, Mara offered a simple response in letter form, via New York Post Giants reporter Paul Schwartz.

“I have your letter and I certainly understand your disdain for night games,” wrote Mara.

“I don’t like them, either! On the other hand, if your team is playing most of its games at 1:00 p.m. it usually means you are not doing very well. In any event, I hope we give you enough of a reason to want to attend our games in person regardless of what time they are scheduled.”

The Giants play three of their eight home games at night this season. In Week 1, they host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. That is followed by Monday games in Week 4 and Week 14 against Seattle and Green Bay, respectively.

The Giants also host the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 18, a game that is eligible to be flexed to Sunday night.

PFF lists Giants’ Dexter Lawrence among 50 best players of 2023

When the New York Giants selected Dexter Lawrence 17th overall in the 2019 NFL draft, it didn’t take long to see the value provided by the athletic nose tackle.

Lawrence took his game to a whole new level last season, which landed him a lucrative extension this offseason. He was one of the league’s best pass rushers, which is notable for a 350-pound interior defensive lineman.

This week, Pro Football Focus has been revealing its list of the 50 best players in the NFL ahead of the 2023 regular season and ranked Lawrence 29th overall.

29. DI DEXTER LAWRENCE, NEW YORK GIANTS

Lawrence became one of the most unstoppable defensive linemen in the game last season. His 92.0 overall grade tied with Chris Jones for the best among interior linemen in the regular season, and he finished with 63 total pressures. Unlike most pass-rushing interior linemen, Lawrence still spent over 500 snaps lined up in the A-gaps as a true nose tackle at over 340 pounds.

Lawrence landed two spots behind New York Jets’ Quinnen Williams and three spots ahead of his teammate, Andrew Thomas, making it very likely Lawrence will be the highest-ranked Giant on PFF’s list.

PFF named Lawrence the Giants’ most improved player in a season where he earned his first Pro Bowl appearance and Second-Team All-Pro honors. Sexy Dexy was also named to both PFF’s All-Pro Team and the Players’ All-Pro Team.

The more dominant Lawrence gets, the clearer it is to see the Giants won the infamous Odell Beckham Jr. trade.
