Apple Vision Pro Low-Cost Version Might Be Cancelled, Second Headset Won’t Arrive for Few Years: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple Vision Pro — the iPhone maker’s first wearable spatial computer — is slated to go on sale in early 2024, but the rumoured cheaper version that was said to be in the works might have been cancelled. According to details shared by TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, shipments of the Cupertino company’s first mixed reality headset will remain below market expectations during the first year and that the company might not release a successor to the headset for a few more years.

In a new Medium post citing maximum production capacity of some component suppliers, Kuo claims that while the market expects Apple to ship 1 million units within the first year, he estimates that the company will ship “at most 400,000–600,000 units”. This is in line with an earlier report that projected similar production estimates for the wearable device.

Kuo also states that the rumoured low-cost version of the Apple Vision Pro headset that was said to arrive a year after the debut of the first model, may have been cancelled at the company. Back in June, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated that the successor to the Apple Vision Pro was already in development and a cheaper model would be released by the end of 2025.

The purported Apple Vision Pro 2 is unlikely to arrive until the first half of 2027, according to the analyst. This implies that Apple is unlikely to introduce newer spatial computers — at a cheaper or more expensive price point — aside from the Vision Pro for the next few years.

Back in July, a report stated that the Cupertino company was forced to make major cuts to its forecasts for the production of the Apple Vision Pro. At the time, it was reported that Luxshare — Apple’s contract manufacturer based in China — was working towards production of “fewer than 400,000 units” of the first-generation Apple Vision Pro in the first year.

Earlier this year, Apple announced at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event that its first spatial computer would go on sale in early 2024. Since then, details of the prescription optical inserts for the headset have been revealed by Zeiss. Apple also released its visionOS developer tools that would allow app makers to develop software for the device, ahead of its debut next year.

iPhone ‘Ultra’ Model With Spatial Video and Image Recording Support for Apple Vision Pro in Development: Report

Apple is working on an iPhone “Ultra” model that could debut with support for recording specialised videos and images that can be used on the Apple Vision Pro, its first spatial computer, according to a report. The Cupertino company is said to be developing a handset that could arrive after the Vision Pro goes on sale next year. When its first wearable mixed reality headset was announced earlier this year, Apple stated that it would offer “incredible depth” and the device uses cameras located on the outer body to record a user’s surroundings.

A MacRumors report, citing an unnamed Weibo user, claims that an iPhone “Ultra” model is in the works and that it will “lead the market to rethink what kind of photos and videos a mobile phone should take”. While the report does not mention any details of the purported handset’s camera configuration, it suggests that the phone could be used to capture detailed, immersive videos and photos that could be used on Apple’s first spatial computer — the Apple Vision Pro.

Back in February, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed in his weekly Power On newsletter that Apple was planning on launching a new iPhone model in 2024 that would be an even more advanced version of the company’s flagship iPhone lineup expected to debut later in the year. Since then, Apple has confirmed it will hold a launch event on September 12, but in true Apple fashion, there’s no word from the company on how many models will debut next week.

Apple unveiled the Vision Pro headset in June at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event, but stated that the device won’t be available to customers until early 2024. Developers can currently test their apps in simulators and in development labs set up by the company in select regions.

The company’s first mixed reality headset is equipped with high resolution displays with Apple’s proprietary EyeSight that allows a wearer to remain aware of their surroundings. It supports both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies and features an array of sensors and cameras located on the chassis. The headset will be able to use these sensors to map the wearer’s surroundings and finger-based gesture input, according to the company. Apple is yet to announce whether the Vision Pro headset will be available in multiple markets including India.

Apple Releases visionOS Developer Tools to Create Apple Vision Pro Applications: Details

Apple on Wednesday released the visionOS SDK, a set of tools that will enable developers to build apps for the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The Cupertino company’s first spatial computer will go on sale in the US next year and Apple is providing app developers with the tools required to build apps for the device. Unlike other Apple products, the company’s upcoming mixed reality headset will use a combination of three different modes of interaction using a person’s eyes, hands, and voice. The visionOS SDK will allow developers to tailor their apps around this functionality while making use of the specialised hardware on the device.

The company announced on the Apple Developer website that the visionOS SDK is now available to developers. In order to create spatial computing apps for the Apple Vision Pro, developers will have to download Xcode 15 Beta 2 that includes the latest visionOS SDK along with a tool to visualise and preview 3D content for the headset called Reality Composer Pro.

Developers will be able to use a simulator for visionOS, which will let them interact with their apps as they are built, while also testing how they will appear in different lighting conditions or in a variety of room layouts, according to Apple. The SDK will let users port an existing app project for the headset, or allow them to create a new application from the ground up.

Apple also stated that it will open labs where developers can test their apps on the Apple Vision Pro, starting in July. These developer labs will be set up in Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. The company’s engineers will also be available to provide support to developers looking to create applications for the Vision Pro headset.

Meanwhile, the company will also open up applications for Apple Vision Pro developer kits. Instead of testing at the company’s developer labs, these kits will allow app creators to build their apps and test them at a faster rate on the mixed reality headset. However, there’s no word from Apple on whether these developer kits will only be available to developers in the US, or the criteria for applying to receive these kits.

Announced by Apple at WWDC 2023 earlier this month, the Apple Vision Pro is the firm’s first mixed reality headset that supports both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. It is controlled with a user’s hands, voice, and eyes. The device also features Apple’s EyeSight technology allowing a user to be aware of their surroundings. Apple’s Vision Pro will also feature support for optical inserts for users who require vision correction, and the prescription lenses will be available when the headset goes on sale in the US next year.

Apple Vision Pro Display Refresh Rate Revealed: All Details

Apple Vision Pro was unveiled by Apple at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference as the first mixed reality headset from the company. During the keynote event, Apple announced that the new headset sports two high-resolution micro-OLED displays housed in a curved aluminium and glass body. While the company hadn’t revealed detailed specifications, new details about the displays on the Apple Vision Pro emerged during one of Apple’s WWDC 2023 sessions. The headset will be available in the US in early 2024, according to the company.

During a developer session on optimising app power and performance for visionOS, the company revealed that the Apple Vision Pro display refreshes at 90 frames a second. This means that the new headset has a refresh rate of 90Hz, similar to competitors such as the Meta Quest 2 and HP Reverb G2 — although some VR headsets like the HTC Vive Pro 2 and Valve Index offer much higher 120Hz and 144Hz refresh rates, respectively.

However, it is worth noting that the Apple Vision Pro is equipped with displays that offer a higher resolution than any other VR or mixed reality headset. The company announced during the WWDC 2023 developer session that the headset’s refresh rate can be ramped up when it is performing certain tasks, such as watching a movie at 24fps — as part of Apple’s attempts to reduce jitter.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman estimated that the Zeiss prescription lenses for the Apple Vision Pro would cost “at least” $300 (roughly Rs. 24,700) to $600 (roughly Rs. 49,500) a pair, hinting at a higher price tag for the company’s headset for customers who wear spectacles. Pricing for the Apple Vision Pro is set at $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,88,600).

The recently unveiled Apple Vision Pro is equipped with two high-resolution micro-OLED displays that are part of an aluminium and glass body with a fabric headband and strap. These displays are callable of visualising a large 100-foot “virtual” display, according to Apple. The headset is powered by an external battery pack that can be slipped into a wearer’s pocket, according to Apple.

According to the company, the Apple Vision Pro will allow users to see their surroundings with a feature called EyeSight that uses camera sensors all around the device, while showing neighbours a wearer’s eyes while in AR mode. A dial on the right edge will switch between AR and VR modes. It will allow users to access specific apps.

Apple Vision Pro price, availability

Apple Vision Pro price is set at $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,88,700) and the mixed reality headset will go on sale early next year via Apple.com and Apple retail stores in the US. There is no word from Apple on when the headset will be available in other markets, including India.

Apple Vision Pro specifications

The new Apple Vision Pro is equipped with dual Micro OLED displays with 23 million pixels across both panels. The headset is equipped with a custom 3D lens that allows a wearer to see AR content across their field of view. It features foveated rendering to show the highest resolution image in the area the viewer is looking.

The device is also equipped with a full sensor array including high-speed main cameras, downward cameras for hand tracking, IR illuminators, and side cameras. It also has a LiDAR scanner and TrueDepth cameras for hand tracking and understanding the space under the device. It is equipped with two individually amplified drivers that deliver personalised Spatial Audio, according to Apple.

Apple Vision Pro is powered by Apple’s powerful M2 chip, as well as a new chip called R1 that is also based on M2. It supports 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, according to the company. Apple claims that the headset can display images within 12ms. The company says that Zeiss optical inserts will be available for wearers who have spectacles, allowing them to use the headset.

The headset can authenticate users with a new Optic ID feature that can scan a user’s iris. Verification is done on device on the headset processor’s Secure Enclave, just like on an iPhone and other Apple devices. Apple also says that the device will use its various sensors to create a “Persona” of a user, a life-size tile of their face, minus the headset, that shows up during FaceTime calls.

The headset runs on a new operating system called visionOS that features a real-time subsystem, a spatial audio engine, a multi-app 3D engine, as well as a foveated renderer to optimise performance. The operating system is also compatible with iOS and spatial frameworks, according to Apple.

The company has partnered with Disney to bring support for AR-enhanced content on day one when the headset is available next year. It has also announced support for several apps including Zoom, Cisco WebEx, Adobe Lightroom, Microsoft, Word, Excel, and Microsoft Teams. Apple has also partnered with Unity to allow native support for these apps on the headset.

Apple to Unveil xrOS Along With First Headset; Several Senior Executives Involved in Development: Mark Gurman

Apple is expected to unveil its first mixed reality headset, dubbed Reality Pro or Reality One, at its upcoming annual developer conference. The company will also reportedly unveil xrOS, the operating system that is expected to run on the new wearable device at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 that is scheduled to begin on June 5. Several senior Apple executives have been reportedly been working on the headset, which is expected to debut as Apple’s most significant hardware launch since the arrival of the Apple Watch in 2015.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has detailed the roles of several senior executives at Apple in the development of the upcoming mixed reality headset. These include Mike Rockwell, who is said to be in charge of the headset, Apple COO Jeff Williams, Dan Riccio, Paul Meade, marketing chief Greg Joswiak, Phil Schiller, Frank Casanova, Kim Vorrath, Jeff Norris, Shannon Gans, and Geoff Stahl.

Other notable names include Johny Srouji, the iPhone maker’s top chip executive, and former Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, who has already departed the firm and stopped working on the headset a year ago. Gurman previously reported that Apple’s executives envision the mixed reality headset will eventually be worn all day, and ultimately replace the iPhone as the company’s most popular product.

Apple’s Reality Pro headset is said to be equipped with powerful M2 chips, and sport dual 4K OLED displays that support both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology. The headset could be powered by an external battery pack, likely to be worn by the wearer. It is also said to feature over 12 cameras to track the movement of the wearer’s body and eyes, and capture their surroundings in order to support mixed reality experiences.

According to a Reuters report, production of Apple’s upcoming wearable headset will be handled by Luxshare, the firm’s Chinese partner. The components for the headset will be produced by Sony, TSMC, Everwin Precision, and Cowell.

Apple’s mixed reality headset is reportedly on track to be revealed at WWDC 2023, but the Cupertino firm was anticipating issues with producing the device. In line with previous leaks, the report claims that the wearable headset will be priced at $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2.50 lakh), but even users who can afford the device may not receive it until the end of the year, as production is reportedly expected to begin in December.

Apple’s Mixed Reality Headset to Feature External Battery Pack With Two-Hour Backup: Mark Gurman

Apple Reality Pro — or Reality One — could make its debut in just a couple of months, according to several leaks and rumours surrounding the company’s first wearable mixed reality headset. Expected to be unveiled in June at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the wearable device will reportedly feature a proprietary connector for charging and a USB Type-C port for data transmission. Meanwhile, details of the battery pack that will power the wearable headset have also been leaked, ahead of its debut.

In his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reveals that the company’s purported $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2,46,300) wearable mixed reality headset will be equipped with two ports. The first will be a proprietary magnetic port that is used to connect an external battery pack that powers the device. This battery pack is said to offer two hours of battery life, which suggests that wearers will have to carry additional batteries for extended usage. The headset will also feature a USB Type-C port for data transmission, Gurman says.

Users will not be able to separate the charging cable from the external battery pack and can turn the connector to lock it once it is in the device, which will resemble the MagSafe battery charging pack, according to Gurman, who adds that the decision to use an external pack was to lower the weight of the headset. The low two-hour battery life could be due to the utilisation of Apple’s powerful M2 chip and two 4K panels to display AR/VR content.

In terms of software features, Apple will pitch support for several features with the purported Reality Pro headset when it is launched, Gurman says, a “scattershot” strategy the iPhone maker adopted when it first launched the Apple Watch several years ago.

Gurman points out that the company eventually dropped support for features that were not popular among customers, while focussing on and developing widely used features like health tracking, payments, and mirroring notifications — these features are also commonly found on rival wearable devices.

While Apple doesn’t reveal details of products before they are officially unveiled, Gurman has previously revealed that the company’s upcoming Reality Pro headset will feature several Apple apps from its iPadOS operating system including the Safari browser, as well as apps for Apple MusicFaceTime, Apple Maps, iMessage, Apple Photos, and other Apple services. Gamers can also expect to see top-tier titles from popular developers, as well as third-party apps that can be ported to xrOS, the company’s operating system for the wearable headset, according to the report.

From smartphones with rollable displays or liquid cooling, to compact AR glasses and handsets that can be repaired easily by their owners, we discuss the best devices we’ve seen at MWC 2023 on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.

Apple Mixed Reality Headset to Be Announced During Media Event in Jan 2023: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple has been developing a mixed reality headset for a while now. It is believed to offer a combination of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences. Reportedly, Apple has teamed up with famous Hollywood directors to develop mixed reality content. Now, it is being reported that Apple could unveil this device at a special event, which could be held at the start of the next year. It is highly unlikely that the Cupertino company would reveal this upcoming mixed reality handset during the ongoing Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 keynote event.

According to a post shared on Twitter by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could start EVT testing of the mixed reality headset around Q3 2022. This is expected to be followed by a special media event that could be held in January 2023. Apple might then take two to four weeks to deliver the development toolkit. Kuo suspects that due to the interruptions caused by the lockdowns in Shanghai, the mixed reality headset’s shipments might postpone to Q2 2023. The Cupertino company is expected to make these headsets available for pre-ordering around the same time. Finally, Apple’s mixed reality headset is expected to hit the shelves before WWDC 2023.

Past reports suggest that Apple could be developing new VR and AR-powered Apple apps and services. It could be working on creating a new platform for third-party developers. Apple could even release a new version of SwiftUI for developers to build AR and VR apps. Its operating system is expected to be named realityOS. As previously mentioned, Apple could be teaming up with Hollywood directors such as Jon Favreau for creating mixed reality content for the Prehistoric Planet series on Apple TV+. This headset is supposed to cost around $2,000 (roughly Rs. 1,55,500). Apple is believed to have ambitions of replacing iPhones with mixed reality headsets in a decade.
