Adobe, Microsoft Join Hands to Bring a Suite of Generative AI Features for Marketers in Microsoft 365

Adobe and Microsoft joined hands to announce a suite of new artificial intelligence (AI) features for marketers at the Adobe Summit on Tuesday. In this collaboration, Adobe will offer its Adobe Experience Cloud workflows and insights to Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 applications. The new capabilities are aimed at reducing data silos and the inconvenience of using multiple different applications to complete complex tasks and build strategies. The collaboration was announced shortly after Adobe unveiled the addition of new AI capabilities and an AI assistant in its Experience Cloud suite of products.

In a press release, the companies noted the complexities in the marketing discipline that have given rise to specialised tools and applications for specific tasks. Highlighting the problem of data silos and back-and-forth navigation between apps that can lead to productivity loss and slowing of impact speed, Adobe and Microsoft announced the collaboration to tackle these challenges with the help of a unified interface and AI.

“Microsoft and Adobe share a common goal of empowering marketers to focus on the work that’s most important – creating impactful campaigns and enhancing customer experiences,” said Jared Spataro, corporate vice president, AI at Work, Microsoft. “By integrating contextual marketing insights from Adobe Experience Cloud applications and Dynamics 365 within the flow of work through Copilot for Microsoft 365, we deliver on our shared goal while helping marketers streamline their efforts, break down barriers, and deliver exceptional results.”

Through the partnership, Adobe will lend relevant marketing insights and workflows from Adobe Experience Cloud applications to Microsoft, which will integrate it into its Copilot for Microsoft 365. As a result, users who use both Adobe products and Microsoft apps such as Outlook, Word, or PowerPoint, can now easily share the data across platforms to create and build marketing campaigns and strategies.

As per the announcement, one of the capabilities Copilot will gain after this tie-up includes getting data from Adobe tools such as Customer Journey Analytics and Adobe Workfront to Microsoft apps such as Outlook, Teams, and Word. Users can ask Copilot questions regarding the status of the marketing project, outstanding approvals, actionable insights, and more.

Users will also be able to draw insights from both platforms to create briefs, presentations, reports, and even imagery using Adobe Firefly generative AI. Adobe Workfront will also compile notifications from multiple applications, emails, and chats to inform the user about the project status. This collaboration has not been released yet and as per the press release, users can sign up on the platform to receive updates.

Microsoft, Meta and X Join Fortnite Maker Epic Games’ Battle Against Apple

Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Elon Musk’s X and Match Group on Wednesday joined “Fortnite” video game maker Epic Games’ protest that Apple has failed to honor a court-ordered injunction governing payments in its lucrative App Store.

The technology companies, which developed some of the most popular apps in the App Store, said Apple was in “clear violation” of the Sept. 2021 injunction by making it difficult to steer consumers to cheaper means to pay for digital content.

Apple declined to comment specifically on the accusation, which was contained in a filing with the Oakland, California federal court.

It referred to its Jan. 16 statement that it had fully complied with the injunction, which it said would protect consumers and “the integrity of Apple’s ecosystem” while ensuring that developers do not get a free ride.

Epic had sued Apple in 2020, saying it violated antitrust law by requiring consumers to obtain apps through the App Store and charging developers up to 30% commissions on purchases.

The injunction required Apple to let developers provide links and buttons to direct consumers to alternative payment options.

Last week, Epic demanded that Apple be held in contempt, saying new rules and a new 27% fee on developers made the links effectively useless.

In Wednesday’s filing, the technology companies said Apple’s conduct “for all practical purposes” entrenches anti-steering rules that the court found illegal, propping up Apple’s “excessive” commissions and harming consumers and developers.

“Apple’s restrictions on where and how developers can communicate with their users about their options for purchasing in-app content create significant barriers to competition and artificially inflate prices,” the filing said.

In January, the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to hear Apple’s appeal from the injunction. It also decided against hearing Epic’s appeal of lower court findings that Apple’s policies did not violate federal antitrust law.

Apple has until April 3 to formally respond to Epic’s filing. The company is based in Cupertino, California, while Epic is based in Cary, North Carolina.

The case is Epic Games Inc v Apple Inc, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 20-05640.

LinkedIn to Add Games to Its Platform That Will Rank Firms Based on Employees Scores: Report

LinkedIn, the Microsoft-owned professional social media platform, is working on diversifying its offerings beyond job searches and business networking. The company is reportedly going to add games to the platform to increase user engagement. LinkedIn would be the latest in the line of several social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube that have experimented with adding in-app games.

According to a TechCrunch report, LinkedIn is working on bringing several puzzle-based games on the app, three of which are called “Queens”, “Inference” and “Crossclimb.” The social media platform confirmed its gaming plans to the publication, but did not reveal a launch window for the upcoming games.

“We’re playing with adding puzzle-based games within the LinkedIn experience to unlock a bit of fun, deepen relationships, and hopefully spark the opportunity for conversations,” the report quoted a LinkedIn spokesperson as saying.

Nima Owji, an app researcher, also found evidence of in-app LinkedIn games, posting screenshots on X (formerly Twitter) that suggest that companies on the platform will be ranked in the games based on the scores of their employees. The screenshots showcase three games — “Blueprint”, “Queens” and “Crossclimb,” all of which seem puzzle-based games.

While LinkedIn confirmed its plans to offer games to its users, there are no details yet about the number and genre of games that will be available on the platform. The games could likely be offered as part of LinkedIn Premium subscription.

Earlier this month, LinkedIn disclosed sales figures for its premium subscription for the first time, confirming that the service reached $1.7 billion (roughly Rs. 14,091 crore) in revenue in 2023 after the company added AI tools to the platform.

In November last year, YouTube introduced “Playables” game arcade, collection of over 30 arcade games that can be played on the YouTube app on iOS, Android and Web, for its premium subscribers.

Microsoft Copilot Pro Rolled Out Globally; Know Its Price in India, Features

Microsoft Copilot Pro, the premium tier of the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform, is now available in 222 countries, including India. The tech giant announced on Thursday that the chatbot-based AI suite is available to individuals as well as small and medium-sized organisations. Copilot Pro was first introduced in January 2024 in select markets as a higher tier of Microsoft’s AI offerings and it bundled the access of AI in Microsoft 365 web apps along with it. Notably, the Windows OS maker recently upgraded the free version of Copilot with the GPT-4 Turbo model.

Microsoft Copilot Pro price in India

The Microsoft Copilot Pro, the premium tier of the AI platform has been set at the price of Rs. 2,000 per user per month. Individual users will have to pay the base price whereas businesses will have to pay the cumulative amount for all the users they want to make the AI tool available to. The platform will be available on the web, as well as on iOS and Android. The company is also offering a one-month free trial on the Copilot mobile apps.

Microsoft Copilot Pro features

Copilot Pro’s main attraction is the access to Copilot on the Microsoft 365 web apps. These include Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and other web platforms, eliminating the need to separately purchase a subscription for the same. However, to access the AI tool in dedicated desktop apps for PC and Mac, a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription will still be required. The tech giant also said that the feature will be extended to free mobile apps such as the Microsoft 365 app and Outlook for iOS and Android in the coming months.

Coming to its core offerings, the Microsoft Copilot Pro will offer its subscribers priority access to its latest AI models. Currently, only Pro users have the option to toggle between GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo. The premium platform also comes with improved AI image creation capabilities and will provide users with 100 boosts per day.

Further, users can also create and share customised Copilot GPTs. These are similar to GPTs in ChatGPT Plus which allows you to create a mini chatbot with limited data and a specific purpose. These can be created using natural language prompts.

Microsoft Copilot AI Chatbot’s Free Version Has Been Upgraded to GPT-4 Turbo

Microsoft Copilot has been silently upgraded to a more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) model, revealed a company executive on Tuesday. With the upgrade, Copilot, the AI-powered chatbot, is now powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo model. Both the free tier and the Pro version can now access the latest model, however, only Copilot Pro users will have the option to revert to older GPT-4 model. Notably, the tech giant also recently revealed the launch date for its Copilot for Security platform, confirming that it will become available globally starting April 1.

Mikhail Parakhin, CEO of Advertising and Web Services at Microsoft, shared a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on March 12, and said, “After quite some work, GPT4-Turbo replaced GPT-4 in the Copilot free tier. Pro users can still choose the older model, if prefer (there is a toggle).” The announcement comes without any fanfare, however, it is a significant upgrade that will impact regular users. Notably, Copilot Pro users could already access GPT-4 Turbo.

For starters, the knowledge cut-off of GPT-4-based Copilot was September 2021 but GPT-4 Turbo has a knowledge base up to April 2023. This will not be noticeable when searching for online topics as the AI chatbot is connected to the internet, however, for topics which cannot be readily found on the internet, the increased knowledge output is expected to result in more updated responses. Apart from the Balanced mode, the updated AI model’s support has also been added to the Creative and Precise modes.

GPT-4 Turbo was introduced by OpenAI in November 2023. It comes with an increased context window of 128,000 tokens, as opposed to GPT-4’s 8,000 tokens. The AI firm said that it can fit the equivalent of more than 300 pages of text in a single prompt. This means that the latest AI model can look through a larger set of data to find contextual information about a prompt. Interestingly, the free tier of OpenAI’s native chatbot ChatGPT is still running on GPT 3.5 AI model.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has also revealed the launch date for its Copilot for Security platform which will be available to enterprise customers starting April 1. Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Microsoft’s security models, it comes with multilingual capabilities, offering support for 25 different languages.

OpenAI’s Video-Making Service Under Data Privacy Scrutiny in EU

OpenAI faces further scrutiny from Italy’s data protection watchdog over concerns that the firm’s new artificial intelligence video creation system would process people’s personal data.

It’s the second time OpenAI has come to the attention of the Italian regulator, which is already investigating possible data violations by the tech company’s ChatGPT tool.

OpenAI is now facing new pressure from the Italian regulator, which said in a statement on Friday that it’s given the firm 20 days to provide information about its new AI service, called Sora, which can quickly create videos up to a minute in length.

This is necessary “given the possible implications that the Sora service could have on the processing of users’ personal data in the European Union and in Italy in particular,” the Italian regulator said, adding that it’s also asked whether “the new AI model is already available to the public and whether it is or will be offered to users in the European Union, particularly in Italy.”

San Francisco-based OpenAI is backed by Microsoft, which along with Alphabet’s Google has been using artificial intelligence to enhance their products.

Last month OpenAI launched an online store where people can share customized versions of the company’s popular ChatGPT chatbot, after initially delaying the rollout because of leadership upheaval last year. The new store, which rolled out Wednesday to paid ChatGPT users, will corral the chatbots that users create for a variety of tasks, for example, a version of ChatGPT that can teach math to a child or come up with colourful cocktail recipes. The product, called the GPT Store, will include chatbots that users have chosen to share publicly. It will eventually introduce ways for people to make money from their creations — much as they might through the app stores of Apple or Alphabet’s Google.

Similar to those app stores, OpenAI’s GPT Store will let users see the most popular and trending chatbots on a leaderboard and search for them by category. In a blog post announcing the rollout, OpenAI said that people have made 3 million custom chatbots thus far, though it was not clear how many were available through its store at launch.

The store’s launch comes as OpenAI works to build out its ecosystem of services and find new sources of revenue. On Wednesday, OpenAI also announced a new paid ChatGPT tier for companies with smaller teams that starts at $25 (roughly Rs. 2,100) a month per user. OpenAI first launched a corporate version of ChatGPT with added features and privacy safeguards in August.

Microsoft Surface Pro 10, Surface Laptop 6 to Reportedly Launch in March

Microsoft Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could debut later this month, as per a new report. The tech giant was rumoured to be working on its first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered PCs that could be integrated with the AI features expected to be rolled out to Windows 11 later this year. The Microsoft PCs are said to be launched with both Intel’s latest 14th-generation and Qualcomm X series chipsets. They are also expected to feature next-gen neural processing unit (NPU).

Citing unnamed sources in a report, Windows Central claimed that both Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could be launched on March 21. The first AI PCs by Microsoft are also reported to be equipped with both new Intel Core Ultra and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite-based chips. If true, this will be the first time that Microsoft ships its Surface Laptop with both Intel and Arm processor options.

While not a lot is known about the upcoming laptops, the report mentions some of its key specifications. The Microsoft Surface Pro 10 could feature an anti-reflective and brighter OLED panel with support for HDR content. It is also said to come with a new webcam with an ultrawide sensor. The webcam could be boosted with AI Studio Effects that will arrive later this year, and an inbuilt NFC reader. Its design is likely to remain the same as its predecessor.

Surface Laptop 6, on the other hand, could get some design upgrades. It is reported to feature thinner bezels with rounded corners for the display and a new haptic touchpad. Additionally, Microsoft announced a dedicated Copilot key to feature in Windows laptops last year, and the laptop is expected to get it. The Laptop 6 is also said to bring a new set of ports including two USB Type-C ports and one USB Type-A port on the left side, and the magnetic Surface Connect charger could be placed on the right.

Apart from this, both devices could get improved battery life and performance. The report claims that the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could be made available in the market in two separate tranches. The first could be in April which will only include the Intel chip-powered models and the Arm models could arrive later in June.

Microsoft Announces End of Support for Android apps on Windows 11 in 2025

Microsoft has made the surprising decision to end support for Windows Subsytem for Android (WSA), a virtual machine that allowed it to bring Android apps to Windows 11 through the Amazon Appstore marketplace. The tech giant first gained the official support for the mobile apps through a deal with Amazon in 2021, and ever since then it has regularly updated the platform. As per the announcement, Windows 11 users will not be able to use Android apps after March 5, 2025.

The announcement was made by Microsoft via a note labeled as “Important” on the Windows Subsystem for Android web page on March 5, 2024. The company highlighted that after the given date next year, Amazon Appstore on Windows and all applications and games dependent on WSA will no longer be supported. “Until then, technical support will remain available to customers. Customers that have installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps prior to March 5, 2024, will continue to have access to those apps through the deprecation date of March 5, 2025,” it added.

Additionally, Amazon also posted an update for developers explaining how the development will impact them and important dates for them to note. According to the ecommerce giant, developers will not be able to submit new apps any more. This was put into effect on Tuesday. However, those developers who already have an app can continue to provide updates and support till the discontinuation date in 2025.

Users can continue to use any pre-installed apps for the next year till March 5, 2025. However, downloading and installing new apps is not possible. The Amazon Appstore and any associated Android apps on Microsoft Store will not be searchable on Windows 11 either. The surprise move comes just three years after Microsoft first introduced WSA. While the company did not mention any reason for the decision, a report by Ars Technica has highlighted that Android app users on Windows 11 were quite low.

The report mentions that this was because Microsoft could not make a deal with Google and instead onboarded Amazon Appstore, which has a much smaller selection of apps compared to Play Store. Further, most major app developers already provide either a web-based interface or a Windows app separately. These reasons could have resulted in WSA and native Android apps never catching on in popularity.
