Las Vegas dad of seven killed by carjacker who gunned down his own mom and fired at cops

A Las Vegas father of seven was killed on his way to work when he was carjacked by a heavily armed man who was being chased by cops for gunning down his own mother.

Gerardo “Jerry” Lopez-Martinez, 39, had just left home at about 3:45 a.m. Wednesday when he was stopped by gunman Justin Davidson, 36, who’d already killed his mom and swiped a squad car after firing at responding cops, according to authorities.

“The guy just walked up shot my husband and threw him out of the vehicle,” Lopez-Martinez’s wife of 13 years, Karen Lopez, told KVVU.

The killer then “ran him over and took our vehicle,” she said.

Four officers saw Davidson shoot the dad and push him out of the vehicle, running him over as he fled despite being hit multiple times, police said.

The gunman — who’d also carjacked another vehicle in the terrifying spree — was later found dead in Lopez-Martinez’s stolen vehicle, police said.

He was wearing camouflage clothing and a tactical vest and investigators found a notebook “with a diagram of a potential ambush situation indicating he was prepared for an armed confrontation with law enforcement,” police said.

“At two residences associated with Davidson, investigators found tactical equipment, prepper supplies, numerous military manuals, and documents regarding police responses to mass casualty incidents.”

Lopez said her husband was excited to get to work as a driver for a medical linen supply company as he had recently been promoted. He likely pulled over because he saw police pursuing the killer.

She collapsed when told what had happened to the man who “always made me feel loved.”

“My stepdad had to catch me because I just collapsed in the middle of the road kind of passed out because I couldn’t handle it, it didn’t seem real,” she said.

The loss is also too much for their seven adopted kids, especially their eldest, an 11-year-old son.

“Last night he kept texting my husband’s phone and he said, ‘I know daddy isn’t going to answer but I hope daddy can still read the messages and know I love him,’” the widow told KVVU.

“We were supposed to grow old together and raise them together.”

The deadly rampage began after Davidson fired a rifle behind his parents’ home, police said.

“As his parents approached the wash area, Davidson began shooting toward them, killing his mother,” cops said. “His father retreated to his vehicle and Davidson shot at the fleeing truck.”

When police arrived, the gunman began firing at them from a hidden location, shot out the windows of a patrol car and took off in it, according to investigators.

Davidson soon bailed from the police car and carjacked a truck full of people at gunpoint without harming them, police said.

He drove the truck to a gas station and tried to carjack a motorist who was pumping gas, fleeing when cops caught up and opened fire.

He then cornered Lopez-Martinez and shot him dead with a long rifle, police said.

Among the weapons used by Davidson was an assault rifle with an erased serial number stolen from a Las Vegas gun show, authorities said.

Clark County Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi provided photos of evidence collected by investigators that suggests he could have been planning for a large-scale attack.

The evidence included a notebook with a hand-drawn diagram “of a potential ambush situation,” a stockpile of items that could be used to build firearm silencers and explosive devices, and documents outlining how police respond “to mass casualty incidents.”

“We do not know if the suspect was attempting to build an improvised explosive device,” Yatomi told reporters. “With the materials we found in his homes, we do not know why the suspect started shooting.”

Davidson, who was wearing camouflage clothing and a tactical vest during the rampage, had a lengthy criminal history dating to 2009, including arrests on drug and weapons charges, she said.

Yatomi said investigators searched the desert area where Davidson started firing off shots.

They found loaded magazines of various calibers in multiple locations, but authorities don’t yet know if the ammo was left behind when the police chase began or if he had been hiding them there for some time.

Police have more locations to search as part of the probe, but for now, Yatomi said: “We’ve painted a picture and I’ve showed you evidence of a story that should be very disturbing.”

A GoFundMe page for the family has raised more than $388,000 as of Tuesday morning.

Kourtney Kardashian shares puke photos after drunken wedding

Here comes the puke.

Kourtney Kardashian shared throwback photos of herself “about to throw up” one year after drunkenly marrying Travis Barker in Las Vegas.

The snaps, which she posted to Instagram Tuesday, show the “Kardashians” star hunched over the back seat of a blacked-out SUV while sitting on the floor and holding her hair back.

The Blink-182 drummer is seen buckled in next to his bride as he comforted her by patting the top of her head and kissing her hand.

“One year ago today, an Elvis impersonator married me and @travisbarker after the Grammys and way too much tequila in a chapel in Las Vegas!” Kardashian captioned the carousel post, which also included PDA-filled pictures.

“It was one of the best nights of our lives, dreaming of a lifetime filled with fun adventures together. And yes, that’s me about to throw up on the floor in the car. 🥂.”

The reality star also shared that she “ended up losing” the black leather jacket that she wore to her booze-fueled nuptials and offered “a reward if anyone finds it.”

Despite having too much tequila, Kardashian called it “one of the best nights” of her life.

In the comments section, Barker wrote, “Kourtney you’re my hunk a hunk burning love ❤️‍🔥,” quoting Elvis Presley.

Page Six exclusively reported at the time that Kardashian, 43, and the musician, 47, did not obtain a marriage license prior to heading to the chapel in April 2022, but the couple legally wed the following month at a courthouse in Santa Barbara, Calif.

They had a third ceremony in Portofino, Italy, in late May 2022, which their loved ones attended.

The couple also had weddings in Santa Barbara, Calif., and Portofino, Italy.

Kardashian previously admitted to being “blacked out” and “slurring” her words when she and Barker first said “I do” in Sin City.

“I was a hot slob kebab,” she said on her family’s Hulu reality series in October.

Kidnapped girl recalls how she carried brother to safety

A 9-year-old Las Vegas girl who carried her baby brother to safety after the siblings were abducted by a carjacker has recounted how she pleaded with the man to let them go.

Nyla Prentiss and her 11-month-old brother King were in the backseat of the Dodge SUV when their mom, Karen Quinn, stopped to use an ATM about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 25.

The suspect, 38-year-old Mario Estrada, jumped inside the vehicle and drove off as Quinn desperately tried to stop him – begging him to let her kids out.

As he bolted away, Nyla also pleaded for him to stop, Fox 5 Vegas reported.

“I was like, ‘Please sir, please let us out the car,’” the plucky fourth-grader told the news outlet.

“‘I ain’t got nothing to do with this, please just take the car and let us go,’” Nyla said she told the man.

“I was like, ‘Please sir, please let us out the car,’” Nyla Prentiss 9, said she told the carjacker.

Nyla’s ordeal was made worse due to a rare disease that caused her kidney to painfully swell during the terrifying incident, her mom said.

Recounting the harrowing experience, Nyla said the suspect had looked at her mother “in a strange way, and then he, he ran outside, and then he tried to open my mom’s door.

“And then my mom came outside and she was like, ‘What are you doing next to my car?’” the girl said.

Quinn said she had locked the door before stepping inside the store briefly, but that it unlocked when the car’s technology sensed that her key was nearby as she rushed to confront the suspect.

“So her car unlocked and then he got in the car and he zoomed,” Nyla told Fox 5 Vegas. “And I didn’t want to put my hands on him because he was driving fast and I didn’t want to die, so… and then he turned and he went the other way.”

Nyla managed to make her way back with King to the 7-Eleven a few blocks away while running barefoot.
Fox5

After a few terrifying moments, the man pulled over and uttered, “Get out,” she said.

“The only thing I was worried about was my little brother. And so I tried to grab my shoes, and he didn’t let me. He was like, ‘Here, get out.’ So I grabbed his binky and me and him ran,” Nyla said.

Nyla suffers from a rare disease that caused her kidney to painfully swell during the terrifying incident, her mom said.

But despite the pain and terror, the girl found her way back to the 7-Eleven about five blocks away – running barefoot while clutching her brother.

“I was looking for some lights, and then I saw the 7-Eleven that we was at, and then I went in there and I was shaking and crying,” Nyla recounted.

Police who were working at the scene located both the children and called Quinn to tell her the good news.

An officer soon spotted the stolen SUV on I-15, leading to a high-speed pursuit that ended when Estrada crashed into another vehicle.

He allegedly climbed out of the wrecked Dodge and tried to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended.

Estrada faces 10 charges, including child abuse or neglect, second-degree kidnapping and grand larceny of a motor vehicle.

Athletics likely to leave Oakland for Las Vegas: MLB commissioner Rob Manfred

Oakland may be out of professional sports teams sooner rather than later.

The future of the Athletics in Oakland has been in limbo for several years, but MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred thinks a new destination is on the horizon.

Manfred told Sirius XM that he’s no longer optimistic they will remain in Oakland, and a move to Las Vegas is likely.

The A’s and Oakland officials had been in discussions regarding a new stadium as part of the Howard Terminal project, but deadlines passed without progress. Because of this, negotiations for the project have been pushed to next year, which A’s president Dave Kaval said would “all but doom our efforts” to stay in Oakland.

Manfred echoed those sentiments, saying there is now “uncertainty” if the A’s will stay put. The team’s lease at the Coliseum ends after the 2024 season.

In May of last year, the team announced it was exploring relocation possibilities while preferring to stay in the Bay Area in a new stadium.

At the time, the A’s “worked very hard to advance a new ballpark in downtown Oakland for the last four years, investing significant resources while facing multiple roadblocks,” MLB said.

The Golden State Warriors moved to San Francisco last year, while the Raiders moved to Vegas before the start of the 2020 season.

Rob Manfred has been working with the A’s since last year attempting to help find the team a suitable new home stadium.

The A’s ranked last in all of MLB for attendance numbers during the 2022 season.

The A’s ranked dead last in attendance this past season, averaging just 9,849 people per game, according to Baseball Reference. It was the lowest average in baseball since the 2004 Montreal Expos, who moved to Washington, D.C., for the start of the next season. Combined with the lockout, the A’s traded away Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, Sean Manaea and Chris Bassitt.

On May 2, only 2,488 people came to see the A’s take on the Tampa Bay Rays, whom Manfred says thinks will remain in St. Petersburg.
